The program, taped on November 16 in Washington DC, brought together ice skaters, singers, and cancer survivors to raise awareness of the fight against cancer.

David performed “Silent Night” while Olympic hopeful, Ashley Wagner ice skated. Nancy Kerrigan, Charlie White and Meryl Davis ice skate while Katharine McPhee sings “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”

  1. They both did very well. David looked quite handsome and Katharine was gorgeous. I’m so proud of them both. Below is a YouTube with better quality audio and video of David’s performance. Plus, it includes his Thanksgiving greeting to everyone…

  2. Love em both. especially david. his voice is magic. brings back memories of the magic he created on idol…

  3. WOW…thanks so much for posting these. Two very talented people.Neither has had instant fame…but it sure appears that they will have lasting careers.

  4. Lovely performances!

My husband says David has the perfect voice for Christmas songs!

  5. Beautiful program and tribute to cancer survivors. Proud of David and Kat for their contribution. Inspired by Scott Hamilton and Dorothy Hamil for their recovery and skating. Scott hadn’t skated for 5 years and came out on the ice using a walker ha! ha! and within a few minutes skated beautifully plus doing a famous backward flip. David’s Silent Night was beautiful!! Love these positive people!!!

  6. I absolutely loved David’s Silent Night, though I was disappointed to only hear him sing the one song instead of the 3 they taped. Beautiful job though, as always! Kat also did a great job, but what’s with her new look? She really had such beautiful long dark hair on Idol! All in all, the whole show was really inspirational!

  7. Those who attended said that Ashley fell on the ice while skating. David fans were a bit excited with anticipation that they would hear him again for the retake of the scene. But it turned out that she skated alone without music after everything was done for the show. LOL. On TV, you can’t tell the difference. Oh, the power of editing. The live show actually took 3 hours long.

  8. When I think of Christmas singers from the Idol group I think of two people. David Archuleta and Clay.

Kat has a beautiful voice also.l

  9. What I like about Kat and Archie is they never had to put on cheap antics and tricks like Adam has been doing. They let their voices speak for themselves without cheapen their performances. They are class acts. Once I looked toward Idol to save the deteriorating music industry. Not deteriorating in the form of sales, but bringing back CLASS, and respectability, but they went the other route. They have been like the other record companies who put out crass, low brow, and horrid behavior back into the music scene. Thank goodness there is still people like Archie and Kat.

  10. Thanks sooo much for the vids.

Loved the one of Archie posted by ozarka. :)

Every time I see Archie perform I think this is his best. Then he gives another outstanding performance like this one and I am blown away.

    That. Totally agree with you…..

  12. True. Remember what the music industry was churning out before Idol?

Britney, 50 cent, people like Katy Perry and their clones.

Idol came out the blue and started putting out quality, not flash and trash…until this season.

  13. Idol came out the blue and started putting out quality, not flash and trash

They started putting out vanilla. And I like my vanilla, but vanilla is vanilla.

  14. The music industry believed that NO ONE was going to buy music from Idol winners…no one, because they believed the public wanted trash instead. But Idol proved them wrong.

Idol came out the blue and started putting out quality, not flash and trash’ ¦until this season.

They started putting out vanilla. And I like my vanilla, but vanilla is vanilla. But I guess it’s not overtly sexual, which is what we should judge the quality of music by…

But seriously, IDOL as the one purveyor of true musical quality in the industry? Well, I suppose mileages vary. I mostly just saw it as a purveyor of mostly bland music, with some rare standouts.

*reposted b/c I couldn’t edit my first comment

  16. “They started putting out vanilla. And I like my vanilla, but vanilla is vanilla.”

as opposed to trash? give me vanilla anyday.

You mean vanilla like Carrie, Kelly, Daughtry, Archie, Cook, and the likes of them?

    lol

That is what the music industry thought of Idol…remember?

  17. as opposed to trash? give me vanilla anyday.

    lol

That is what the music industry thought of Idol’ ¦remember?

“as opposed to trash? give me vanilla anyday”

    Well that’s where we differ.

But most vanilla IS musical trash, which I’m fine with, because even if it’s not particularly innovative or interesting, it can still be nice to listen to. And er…yes, vanilla like Carrie, Daughtry, Archie, Cook, although I do like Carrie’s music quite a bit. As for Kelly, I look at her differently after My December. Look, I’m not saying Idol can’t produce good music, but I wouldn’t call it the jewel of the recording industry, that’s all.

And I have no idea what the music industry thought of Idol, or about Idol’s heroic ascension story, lol. This is my first year following Idol so closely.

  18. Simply beautiful. The voices and the skating. I didn’t get a chance to see this on TV due to being busy with Thanksgiving dinner and with family. Further, I forgot to record it, so thank you so much for posting MJ. I’m going to go buy David’s CD tomorrow while out shopping. Have listened to it online, and it is quite good. Getting in the Christmas spirit now! :)

  19. But most vanilla IS musical trash

As compared to Adam’s FYE and his performance on the AMAs? The whole look-at-me-I-wannabee-edgy schtick like Britney.

That is pure trash. Plus Adam’s previous music, which is PURE POP trash….just like the majority of Britney’s music.

Now THAT is not vanilla, it is over produced, over processed CHEESE.

I don’t want to continue if this is going to become a my-Idol-is-less-trashy-musically-than-your-Idol contest, sorry. I just disagreed with your initial assessment of Idol as the bastion of musical quality in the industry and stated that, and I’ll end it there.

  21. I was commenting on Archie and Kat’s singing and music…and I appreciate their staying true to MUSIC and SINGING.

People don’t have to comment on my opinion…that is my opinion of them.

  22. I don’t remember seeing Adam or Britney (?!) on the “Kaleidoscope” show today, so I can only comment on the performances I saw today. Beautiful performance, David.

  23. I always loved Archie’s voice. His voice was made for the holidays…no matter which holiday it was.

  24. Waitwait…is that Kristi Yamaguchi, presenting Archie??? Or am I just very confused. But if it is her then ♥ And I agree that Archie’s rendition of that song is very beautiful.

  25. ozarka! Thanks for the exra video. Such richness of voice, wow.

Oh, and “….American Idol SUPER STAR, David Archuleta!”

    Nice intro!, lol.

  26. Yes, Sherena, it is Kristi Yamaguchi. She did some awesome skating on the show too.

  27. ozarka! Thanks for the exra video. Such richness of voice, wow.

Yes, I know. It’s rich and smooth… like buttah.

  28. another stellar performance by david and a fantastic program to bring spotlight on these brave cancer survivors. i still get amazed by the way david’s voice still resonates so warmly and richly throughout the arena, filling every corner clearly and beautifully. small venue or large, he is compelling to watch and hear. great job by him and kat.

  29. That was lovely and both sounded great. AI’s stable of singers who can be counted on to perform well at these types of venues is impressive.

The skaters with the candles looked very awkward to me, but once they sat down it was better.

I’m sorry I missed Scott Hamilton. That would have been something to see. I LOVE Kristi Yamaguchi. I miss Kat’s rich brown hair, though I do like the cut. Well, except for it always being in her eyes.

  30. David’s “Silent Night” is one of my favorites on the album and I thought the skaters’ choreographies worked quite well with the music. Kristi Yamaguchi is another person who just really caught a piece of my heart, long ago, and I’m still always happy to see her. (She skated too and was COMPLETELY charming.) Loved the rest of the show too.

  31. Archie is a crooner….his voice and his song styling is really a throwback to another age of music. Yes, his voice is beautiful and yes he should stay in this type of genre, that is where HE fits.

  32. nice to see you’ve come out of your self imposed moritorium on david commenting to chime in with your observations tess  david, regardless whatever style of music some project and speculate best suits him, does compel one to take notice. that’s the mark of a true star, and one who has a organic and unaffected charismatic gift that will continue to make people, across a wide demographic of age, style and musical taste, take notice for years to come.

  33. For those who missed the show, immediately before David’s segment came on, there was a commercial for the upcoming Season 9 of American Idol. It tied in well with Yamaguchi’s and Foster’s little banter about Idol and the Olympics. This actually made Yamaguchi sound less silly than she actually was. LOL! Can you believe it? They’re already advertising for next year’s American Idol!

  34. David Foster is certainly smitten with Kat. Lucky for her, it keeps her out there in people’s minds. And I agree, any kind of live tv programming can certainly rely on those Idols to sing live. You can’t say that for a lot of other performers out there.

    I love both these performances!

  35. Archie is a crooner’ ¦.his voice and his song styling is really a throwback to another age of music. Yes, his voice is beautiful and yes he should stay in this type of genre, that is where HE fits.

I absolutely agree that David has a voice supremely suited for this type of music. However, the almost 2M fans who bought his Crush single and the 100’s of thousands who have seen him in concert over the last 18 months would disagree that this is where he fits. He fits in the pop world also, this is a proven fact. His voice is very versatile. His Christmas concerts feature the pop songs Crush and Zero Gravity (pop rock) to the same successful reception as the songs Ave Maria and O Holy Night. He simply cannot and will not be boxed in.

  36. i am so happy that david got the chance to sing in this kind of show. when i listen to him i can’t belive i am hearing the song from an 18 year old. he is an amazing talent. those who don’t have a copy of his CFTH album should get it now. it is as amazing as david is.

  37. regardless whatever style of music some project and speculate best suits him, does compel one to take notice

My moms a BC survivor. So my family tuned in for the show.

The thing about Archie is I think he has something for everyone. Not just one style. All my friends luv Crush and it is still mark as one of our fav love songs today.

Archie on this show was for my mom.

    Thank u Archie

  38. He simply cannot and will not be boxed in.

this needs to be bronzed, lolol… try as many might, david has the gift, the genuine gift of being truly vocally versatile, and trying to pigeonhole or categorize him as best suited for this or that doesn’t cut it – ”crush” showed the danger in doing that, and coupled w/his dynamic concert appearances throughout this year has further exploded the myth coming off idol that his ability to really deliver ballads would make him not viable in the mainstream… whatever floats the boats of those still clinging to this discarded notion, lolol… david just keeps on doing what he do – and people take notice.

  39. They both did a great job in their performances, and that’s the type of music that’s well fitted for both of them. I still do not like Kat’s straw looking hair – it makes her looked washed out, and it’s always in her eyes. Isn’t David Foster a friend of the family to begin with?

  40. did anyone see the show yesterday? was Silent Night the only song by David that got aired? I was hoping that Pat-a-Pan would be aired too.

  41. I think that releasing a Christmas album was a stroke of genius by David and his management. After a summer touring with Demi Lovato and singing to a largely teen/tween audience, I think there was a real risk of him being seen as another disposible teen pop star. I think that his Christmas album — especially Silent Night — shows that he is so much more and that his potential at 18 years old is unlimited.

  42. Hear, hear, to all of you responding that David’s abilities, while suited for crooning, also go far beyond that style. I concur. My older teen daughter enjoyed Zero Gravity and Works for Me! most when we heard David in concert. And we all love Crush. His voice in that chorus was just … wow.

  43. Suzanne, I’d hoped to see and hear him singing Pat-A-Pan too, but it wasn’t aired. I’ve heard that no one skated to David’s two other performances, so perhaps they were only intended for the audience in attendance.

  44. I think that releasing a Christmas album was a stroke of genius by David and his management. After a summer touring with Demi Lovato and singing to a largely teen/tween audience, I think there was a real risk of him being seen as another disposible teen pop star. I think that his Christmas album ‘” especially Silent Night ‘” shows that he is so much more and that his potential at 18 years old is unlimited.

very astute observation, and i agree. his fanbase from idol and its expansion beyond has always been comprised of young teens and adults. having the type of musical chops, appeal and sensibilities to produce a pop album and a christmas cd gives insight into his burgeoning ability to draw in fans across diverse demographics most artists and labels dream of capturing… there are some artists who go after certain niches / styles of music and audiences that can be limiting to their mass appeal, where david’s appeal is broad and seemingly unlimited.

  45. Was able to attend the taping of the show and David was well represented at the show as well as on TV! There were even performers who never made the TV portion of the show at all! Oh live his Pat a Pan and First Noel…..
    well we were speechless
    Pat a Pan was outstanding!
hopefully he gets a chance to perform that somewhere for the TV viewing audience as well as in his concerts…
wait there is Billboard.com Live in December at Foxwoods!!!

  46. I can’t get over his singing “The Riddle” with his playing the piano. I showed the video to my nephew who is 19 years old and he liked it at the first listen. He said it was stuck in his head all night. David’s singing without many oooos, ohhhhs, and gymnastic but with the gorgeous timbre of voice is amazing. I wish he has more songs like that on his 2nd pop album.

Look at the list of songs for this winter concerts; Crush, Zero Gravity, Waiting for Yesterday, The Riddle, Fields of Gold, Prayer of the Children, Ave Maria, O Holy Night, etc. From dancing & sweeping around the floor, jumping up and down, sitting on a stool quietly, playing the piano, and belting out for solemn songs with reverance. He is becoming one dynamic and versitile musician. Can’t wait for Dec, 11 at Waukegan!!

  47. Beautiful performance by David…too bad his other songs got cut. I was hoping to see “Pat-a-Pan”. Guess I’ll have to wait to see it live in Ann Arbor tonight. :)

  48. those who don’t have a copy of his CFTH album should get it now. it is as amazing as david is.

Bought 2 copies, one for me and one for my mom. We both love it! Listened to over and over on our road trip to my brother’s for Thanksgiving yesterday.

BTW, is it true that Archie’s Christmas shows are not selling well? I heard that ticketmaster is now selling the tickets buy 1, get 1 free. That would sadden me if this concert didn’t sell very well. I’m going and so looking forwad to it.

  49. I saw Archie on TV last nite. He sang beautifully as always. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole show. Thanks Ozarka for the extra video.

  50. Tess, when I have to admit at one time I agreed with you until I heard him sing live – Zero Gravity and I thought no pop, then I heard Desperate, then Bubbly, the Contigo en La Distancia and I realized this young man can sing anything!!!! Wow, it is very rare to find an artist that can sing any genre! Listen to him sing The Riddle, Ave Maria, Fields of Gold and you’ll see what we’re talking about! :)

  51. David gave a fabulous performance! You have to see him live on his winter tour to truly feel his emotion and be STUNNED by his vocal talent!!

  52. Katherine sounds great. I really like her recent song “had it all”, if only she had received better material off of AI I think she could have been a huge success. I think she was the most mismanaged contestant off the show ever.

  53. ddlovato (Demi Lovato): Listening to “Apologize”… Always makes me think of @DavidArchie haha.. Miss you david!
about 1 hour ago from web

    Awwww!

  54. i haven’t heard that one sunshinegirl… slc i think sold out the two shows, there are several others to my knowledge almost the same way… dunno what it’s looking like across the board, but i think this tour is going to sell pretty well overall… the anticipation to see david is sky high, and he’s been getting press in the upcoming tour cities… no worries about mr archuleta on this one…

  55. ”christmas from the heart” has muscled its way up to number 39 on the itunes top album chart [overall] :) it’s now moved ahead of sting, kris allen, leona lewis, bon jovi and lady antebellum… fantastic… go little christmas album go!

  56. great article… excerpts below… read more at the link…. his ”crush” numbers are off though, lolol….

‘Idol’ Archuleta’s career a lovely blur
Runner-up from Season 7 of Fox show coming Sunday to Wells Fargo Center in Santa Rosa

    By BILL PINELLA
    THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

At age 10, he won a children’s division of the Utah Talent Competition.

At 11, he was performing an impromptu song in a Los Angeles hotel lobby for “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson.

At 12, he became the Junior Vocal Champion on the TV show “Star Search.” At 17, he received 97 million votes and was the runner-up on season No. 7 of Fox’s “American Idol.” At 18, he released his first single, “Crush,” from his debut self-titled album. As of June, it had sold 900,000 copies worldwide.

And on Sunday, exactly 28 days before his 19th birthday, Archuleta will visit Santa Rosa for the first time and perform at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts on the fifth stop of his holiday Christmas From The Heart Tour.

“The ‘American Idol’ thing seems like a lot longer ago than just a little over two years,” Archuleta said last week from Los Angeles, where he was working on his new record.

“But my advice to anyone who doesn’t win and wants to continue in music is to be true to yourself. Don’t try to impress people by being something else. Be who you are and show people that.

I think where I have changed in the past two years is learning how to speak up for myself,” he said. “Of course, management helps a lot. I wouldn’t know the first thing about how to set up a tour. It is amazing how many people you have working for you.

“But I’ve learned how to ask for things. To tell people I want this or that. You have to or you would get walked on. You realize that it is a business.”

  57. the writer of that Press Democrat article is the Assistant Sports Editor. Now that is a small paper.

  58. Thanks for the iTunes update and the article, ggdoorsfan!

“Yes, I’ll do a few of those pop songs that I do,” he said. “I’m kind of known for ‘Crush,’ so you have to put that one in there.

Hahaha. I found that very amusing, for some reason.

Here is the set list for tonight’s concert at the Ann Arbor with the 76-piece symphony orchestra…

Word is that the use of cameras and cell phones are not allowed. So we may not get any footage or it will be minimal. Bummer!

  59. there is a cellcast from ann arbor tonight… there are some stealthy ninja’s inside :)

  60. outside of the crush numbers, that asst. sports editor did a much better job writing and formatting this piece than most so called music journalists :)

  61. Cellcast is over. “O Holy Night” was added to the set as the encore. “A Merry Christmas to Me” was a song we’ve never heard him sing before. I thought it was going to be just an orchestral piece. Here is 50 second video of “Crush” sung with the orchestral accompaniment…

  62. I have never seen the DA ninjas not get some video, even when it was prohibited. I hope they can get some.

  63. sounds like david slayed them in ann arbor tonight… these tweets from a reporter [jillorose] writing a review of the concert – cannot wait to read it, and see david in baltimore :)

@DavidArchie your voice is so well suited to that music. 43 minutes ago from txt

@DavidArchie there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when you sang Ave Maria. I had never cried during a concert until tonight. 38 minutes ago from txt

@DavidArchie I’m writing a review for your concert now. It will be in the Grand Rapids Press tomorrow. I have a lot of GOOD things to say! 33 minutes ago from txt

  64. Thx for that link. I’m on an iPod touch and it’s like he’s singing in my ear. What a magnificient vocal. And I’m no gusher. Incredible.

  65. some more quotes from concertgoers at tonight’s ann arbor performance with the symphony… wish i could have been there…

    From EmilyFOD
Overheard one woman say, ‘I didnt expect it to be so good’ and a man say ‘Kid’s got a voice’ . :)

    From PriErikaKothari
David cried during silent night, so beautiful!

    From Kristin_514
David wiped away tears while singing Ave Maria

    From PriErikaKothari
Oh by the way this concert totally disproved the theory that David only has teens and women as fans. So many men there!

    From EmilyFOD
WOW. SIMPLY INCREDIBLE. O Holy Night as an encore’ ¦got roses at the end.

  66. There are several challenging songs on the album, so I figured he might include one or maybe two of them in concert because of the difficulty level. Lo and behold, he’s singing all of them. That Ave Maria last night was glorious. I followed Kurt Bestor’s and Richard Parkinson’s tweets when they were recording the album and knew David spent a lot of hours perfecting Ave Maria. And here he is, singing it with those same soaring vocals in concert. I’m just amazed.

Haven’t heard anything else from last night. Better go listen.

  67. Okay — the “Merry Christmas to Me” is a different sound for him — very light in the way some Christmas songs can be light, but I like it. Would love to know the lyrics. Has anyone learned anything about that song?

And he was great on O Holy Night too.

    Back in for more.

(Going to see Wicked today and I don’t have time for this, but last night seems to have been a great night for him overall.)

  68. Katharine sounds great on this song. Where’s Tonya Harding when you need her?

  69. David’s performance in Ann Arbor was just magnificent! His voice just soared through the auditorium. I was worried the full orchestra would drown him out but it didn’t. Had great seats….second row, but to the right of the stage. David stood more toward the left and because of the orchestra set up, there was no way for him to move around the stage. He looked adorable in his black suit, tie and white shirt. And his smile just beams like a ray of sun. It amazes me that this young man, just a month shy of 19 years of age, has so much maturity, depth and talent. You could tell that the orchestra members were just as much in awe of him as the rest of us. What an incredible night….one I won’t forget and I’m sure one that David won’t either.
