  1. Just listened to the clip – Danny’s vocals sound great. Can’t wait to hear the entire song – will definately be putting this one on my Ipod along with my other holiday tunes.

  2. Danny’s version has be the cheesiest cheesy rendition of all cheesy songs!

  3. I loved Amy Grant’s version of this song..so heartfelt and sincere.
    Danny…not so much.

  4. I take it springboard likes cheese, and I like Danny’s version of the song. So, I will definitely be downloading it when it becomes available.

  5. I don’t think that this song is very cheesy. However when I heard Amy’s version I thought that the song would sound better with more of a “kick” to it. Because the original version just sounded kind of monotone, IMO.

And I think that Danny’s version needed to have more of a “kick” to it. I hope that his version does have this. This clip of him sounds nice, IMO. I wonder when it will be available for sale on Itunes?

  6. OK not in the mood for Christmas songs yet.

Always loved Amy’s Tennessee Christmas. (one of my favorite newer Christmas songs).

My wife will love Danny’s. oh well.

  7. I can’t wait to hear the whole Danny version of this song.

ETA: Listening to 30 seconds of Danny’s version has me wanting to hear more. Listening to 30 seconds of Amy’s version leaves me wanting to fall asleep. In those 30 seconds of Danny’s we get to hear I feel the “kick” needed in this song. Come on Nov 19!!

  8. I’m getting a very ‘Ladies Man’ from SNL vibe from the cover art. Pass the Courvoisier.

  9. Gorgeous. Danny’s beautiful voice plus a Christmas classic equals magic. Danny can make any song special….I bet Amy Grant is thrilled he chose one of hers.

meyers77….a happy wife is a good thing;)

  10. LOL at the SNL ladies man reference! I see it now! :) Anyway, I don’t particularly like cheesy Christmas songs, but who knows, this may sell more for Danny than anything else he has done yet?

  11. I agree Bethlyn, the label getting a Christmas song out for Danny means they are finding ways to keep him on radio until the new music is ready. I’m sure happy about that!

Smart choice on the cover art…it is the photo he signs at his concert autograph line after his show, with some Christmas trimmings added. It is quite possible that those happy fans (new and old) that line up by the hundreds, and sometimes thousands, to get his autograph after being blown away by his live show will see that familiar picture on Amazon, etc. and click “buy”!

  12. Nothing new with the rendition, it’s still boring. There are a lot of better christmas songs that he could’ve covered. Just like his run at AI he chooses old, boring songs.

ITA. Nothing against Amy Grant, but there are just songs that suit some voices/artists better than others. And this is a great example of where I think Danny’s version is an improvement. I also think it was smart to chose a song that that is not necessarily a Christmas standard that has been recorded and played over and over again.

  14. I like it!

Danny’s version has be the cheesiest cheesy rendition of all cheesy songs!

Christmas songs are cheesy by definition; always sentimental if not downright cloying, lol. Unless you have the songs that are humorous.

Although Amy’s version is a snoozer, I nodded off in the first 5 seconds. I can already tell Danny sped it up in this short clip, and I suspect the whole song will have his handprint on it. And his vocals and harmony sound great.

Christmas songs aren’t my fave, but I think this will be a nice addition to Country radio. Can always use more Danny.

Nothing new with the rendition, it’s still boring. There are a lot of better christmas songs that he could’ve covered. Just like his run at AI he chooses old, boring songs.

Christmas songs are done to death on Country radio. And 99% of them are old, boring songs, lol. People like tradition at Christmas. And it is a wise move to pick one that hasn’t been done to death.

    Smart move, RCA.

  15. The fact that his label has reduced a Christmas song tells me that Danny has made it.

I wouldn’t go that far. If Danny had a significant radio presence, the label would not have to resort to a seasonal offering as opposed to his music.

  16. I feel like Danny’s label is trying to force feed him to the public until they either make him the star they want him to be or people get fed up with the hype and move on.

  17. I wouldn’t go that far. If Danny had a significant radio presence, the label would not have to resort to a seasonal offering as opposed to his music.

Yes, not sure if Danny has “made it”, although what is the definition of that anyway, lol!

The label isn’t “resorting” to anything. If you listen to Country radio you will realize it is chock full of Christmas music. And I doubt Rascall Flatts, Sugarland, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, George Strait, etc, etc are resorting to anything- I just took a holiday rate the music and every song on there was a big name :)
Pretty standard for big country names to put a Christmas song out (not saying Danny is a big country name, just disagreeing with your premise that the label is “resorting” to anything).

Considering the only Idols right now with a big radio presence are Carrie and Daughtry; Danny could be one of the few with any radio presence the next 8 weeks ;)

I feel like Danny’s label is trying to force feed him to the public until they either make him the star they want him to be or people get fed up with the hype and move on.

Interesting statement, lol. Why do you say that? Just because Danny has buzz lately? He’s had no PR the past six months and he just happens to be visible right now because of all the award shows coming up. I don’t see how that his “forcing” him on anyone; in fact RCA is pretty cheap at times- they’ve been quite frugal with Danny’s PR.

  18. Seems to me that many Idols have produced Christmas albums…or put out singles at Christmas. I would not gage that *Danny has made it* by this…I would go by how his sales are going and if he tours to great crowds. …Merry Christmas to his fans ….they will love this!

  19. Okay, I have to admit that ever since I heard Danny was going to sing about a tender Tennessee Christmas being the best Christmas to him, I’ve had a hard time wrapping my head around it since he’s from Milwaukee?

Anyway, I’ve always loved Amy Grant’s version. :D

  20. I’ve never heard this song before. Danny sounds fine but I didn’t like either version of this. Cheesy. But I’m not a big fan of Christmas music in general, aside from a few carols and one or two more modern songs.

  21. Merry Christmas to his fans ….they will love this!

Thank you Pixie; that is sweet of you. I think one advantage of being such a fan in Idolworld is that we are always thrilled to get any new music from our fave.

a hard time wrapping my head around it since he’s from Milwaukee?

Ah, he lives there now, for the past two years and will continue to live there. And he’s been there a lot in the past since his brother in law lives there.
I haven’t heard a Christmas song from Milwaukee- I suppose it would involve Beer, Cheese and the Packers?

I’m getting a very ‘Ladies Man’ from SNL vibe from the cover art. Pass the Courvoisier.

LMAO! I think Danny is very hot (esp. in person), but I gotta agree with you that this photo gives off that vibe.
    Funny.

  22. The label isn’t “resorting” to anything. If you listen to Country radio you will realize it is chock full of Christmas music. I agree. Country radio plays several Christmas songs during the Holiday season. I don’t think that Danny’s label is “resorting” to anything either, by having Danny release this song. I think it’s a good idea and I hope that this song does well for Danny.

I also agree that Danny has barely had any PR the last six months. I am glad that he will finally get some with the upcoming awards shows. Like the ACA’s. I hope he wins the award for Best New/Breakthrough Artist.

  23. I love Christmas music – it is all I listen to between Thanksgiving and Christmas and I know that I am not alone. Can’t wait to hear Danny’s Christmas song on my country radio stations – it will fit right in. I like Amy’s version but like Danny’s better. I think his song will have more soul and won’t be as low-key – it does have a country vibe. Anyone else think Danny sounds a little like Kenny Rogers? Hope I get to hear the Gokey growl in the song.

  24. I don’t partically like the song but I do think Danny sounds better on it than Amy – she sounds quite bland.

  25. That’s just a 30 sec snippet so I would prefer to listen to the whole song before making my opinion on the song – what I can say is I cannot finish Amy Grant’s version, but I want to listen to the whole song sang by Danny – he mentioned that he would make the song sound more soulful so I look forward to listening to his version.

I feel like Danny’s label is force feed him to the public

That’s a very interesting perspective to say the least – I am sure that must be “a glass half full or a glass half empty” way of looking at things cos I don’t get that at all, in fact, I would not say the label is force feeding the artist to the public if anyone from S8 managed to record a Christmas song for the season, it’s just so happened Danny is the first from S8 to do so – so congrats Danny, I am so happy for his label’s supports and the opportunities he has got so far.

  26. Somethings never change. Blah, blah, blah. It does test my nerves.

    Digging Danny though!

So much is going well for him these days. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  27. Well, I like what I’ve heard so far of Danny’s version of “Tennessee Christmas.” His voice sounds so smooth and mellow, which fits the season. With apologies to fans of Amy Grant, I’ve never cared for her voice, although I don’t know why. So I didn’t make it through the whole song. But Danny’s version left me wanting more. No surprise there, since I’m a fan of Danny’s music. I guess at the end of the day, we like what we like, and there may be no rhyme or reason to it.

  28. I feel like Danny’s label is force feed him to the public

But if it was anyone other than Danny who was getting so much buzz, it would be merited and due to their talents rather than force feeding, am I right? Why is it so hard to understand that people have minds of their own and have decided they love Danny and his music? Danny has come so far, and I couldn’t be happier that he seems to be building up so much momentum and is beginning to have a fanbase outside the Idol bubble. If he wins an ACA, be prepared–the buzz he’ll get after that will make what’s happening now look like nothing. Danny fans have always had to wait for everything, and his (and our) patience is finally starting to pay off. Danny is doing everything right, and so is RCA. I don’t see that as force feeding.

I love what I heard of “Tennessee Christmas.” I’m not a big fan of Christmas music in general, but this song seems perfect for Danny’s voice and style, and of course he lives in Tennessee now too so it fits. I like this better than Amy Grant’s. Danny’s soulful voice shows a tender and soft side but is still powerful.

I also like the choice of photo. It may not be a new photo, but I always thought it looked very Christmas-sy, with the best gift of all sitting in that comfy chair.

  29. I love Christmas songs a lot (cheesy or not). I’m just so glad Danny came out with one, it would sure make my holiday so much special. From the sound of that sample, I can hear the tenderness in his voice and can feel the Christmas vibe, can’t wait to hear the whole song!!!

  30. Is that the album cover? thats like the same as his other album!!

Yes, that is one of his standard PR shots; I think it may have been the first single cover?

I think that is a smart decision for RCA to use the same cover with Christmas decoration around it- the red theme already looks like Christmas- so clever and financially smart too, especially for a song
that will only be out for 6 weeks, since it is a Christmas song.

I also like the choice of photo. It may not be a new photo, but I always thought it looked very Christmas-sy, with the best gift of all sitting in that comfy chair.

    Say it sister!

  31. Sorry, Danny singing about a Tennessee Christmas still just doesn’t resonate with me. I’m sure it’s just me and I’m fine with that. It’s just always represented to me a song about a place someone grew up and knows the love comes from the place they grew up. Silly sentimental me. Oh well. :D

Danny does live in Nashville now, and has relatives he was staying with who live just outside of Nashville, so in a way it does fit.

Should “White Christmas” only be sung by those who live in snowy climates?

  33. This small taste of “Tennessee Christmas” from Danny Gokey just makes me want more!

The last couple of weeks must be a blur for Danny. In an interview Sunday he was asked what he did for Halloween. He said it was good but he couldn’t remember–he said he thought he had a show…. (He had a solo show in Vancouver on the 30th and was making his way back to Nashville.)

He’s living out his dreams (and more so, I suspect) in Nashville, TN!

  34. I’ve always liked Amy Grant, but Danny’s version sounds very promising from this short segment. Look forward to hearing the whole song when it’s released, and possibly seeing him do it live sometime before the holidays :)

Danny’s O Holy Night last year was just gorgeous and a great vehicle to show off the range and power of his voice, but Tennessee Christmas is very warm with those raspy touches that keep Danny’s vocals always interesting. It seems very suitable to me for radio, I hope they will give it some good play.

I don’t think the location really matters, though Danny has lived in Nashville over the past year plus and had visited it a number of times before–maybe even at Christmas ;)

These kinds of songs are about the feeling of the song and the holiday in an emotional sense. It’s not literally about Tennessee :)

I’m getting a very ‘Ladies Man’ from SNL vibe from the cover art. Pass the Courvoisier.

Lol. Although have to agree with those above who noted that there were a variety of these “chair pics” from Danny’s original album photo shoot, and his fans have not been complainin’ about them ;)

I feel like Danny’s label is trying to force feed him to the public until they either make him the star they want him to be or people get fed up with the hype and move on.

    Awesome, hope so :)

  35. These kinds of songs are about the feeling of the song and the holiday in an emotional sense. It’s not literally about Tennessee :)

Yeah, I agree with the “White Christmas” comparison; who cares where the singer grew up or currently lives- if they sing beautifully and make me feel something it is win win for me.

  36. who cares where the singer grew up or currently lives- if they sing beautifully and make me feel something it is win win for me.

You hit the nail on the head.

  37. Danny sounds great, as always. I had my heart set on O Holy Night; it was awesome and the best rendition I have EVER heard. However, this song is probably a wiser move, and I look forward to hearing the whole song.

For what it’s worth, I think Danny has been living in TN since before he went on AI, not that it really matters.

  38. I feel like Danny’s label is trying to force feed him to the public until they either make him the star they want him to be

Every artist, especially those just starting out, should be so lucky to have that kind of support from their record label. Danny is now in the studio, collaborating with some of the top songwriters in Nashville, looking ahead to his sophmore album. That not only validates the confidence RCA Nashville has in Danny, but it also means that he probably did well enough with his debut that they green light the 2nd album. Not too bad for someone who finished in 3rd place. Not too bad when naysayers insisted he would not last 6 mos in Country music and would most definitely be the first from Season 8 to be dropped from his contract. We all now know that neither is the case.

  39. Danny is now in the studio, collaborating with some of the top songwriters in Nashville, looking ahead to his sophomore album.

And his fans (like me) are ecstatic– It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!

  40. I’m glad MJ posted Amy Grant’s version so I could hear the difference between the two. I like Danny’s clip better than the snippet I listed to from Amy. I also love Christmas songs, like some of you. :)

  41. Just to keep it real, White Christmas was written by a jewish man sitting in Palm Springs. So Christmas is where the heart is :)

I think it was a smart choice to go a song that doesn’t have 57 versions competing with each other, there are just so many version of Jingle Bell Rock one can stand.

  42. I get the feeling for Danny also, it may be a little bit of a celebration / commemoration of his coming to Nashville and the incredible year he’s had since then. Recording an album, touring with a major country act, hearing his music on the radio, and starting basically a completely new phase of his life though with support from people he’s close to in the area.

  43. I am so excited to see this preview of the Christmas song out so early. I cannot wait to buy this…Danny sounds great!

  44. Just to keep it real, White Christmas was written by a jewish man sitting in Palm Springs. So Christmas is where the heart is :)

Seriously?! I learn something new everyday being an Idol fantard, lol.

You took the words right out of my mouth. And all this couldn’t be happening to a more deserving person.

  46. The White Christmas story reminds me of Elliott Yamin’s Christmas album. He is not a Christian, but rather Jewish. He did a Christmas album a couple of years back. It was pretty good, too. :)

  47. Just to keep it real, White Christmas was written by a jewish man sitting in Palm Springs. So Christmas is where the heart is

Who I’m sure was longing for a snow. Something he had experienced. :D

I’m not trying to dis Danny, (though I’ve never been a fan of his phrasing and this snippet is no different) I’ve just always felt this way about this song. My husband told me Alabama covered it and I even have trouble w/ that. ;) Even though I’m sure their harmonies were pretty awesome.

  48. I like it! Danny brings a warmth to the song – perfect for a chilly winter’s day.

Smart move by Danny’s people once again.

  49. I love Christmas songs and I love Danny so I am a happy camper!

I am suspecting more and more that Steph and I are twins separated at birth – she said what I was thinking when I listened to the preview of Danny. That huskiness/raspiness/texture of his voice turns a simple and sweet melody into something interesting and special, for me it does anyway. Can’t wait to hear the whole thing!
