Danny Gokey Performs ‘Back at One’, Phoenix AZ – VIDEO

Danny Gokey performs a Brian McNight cover, “Back at One” at the KNIX “Country Throwdown” event in Phoenix AZ, on Friday (Feb 19).

Wonder why the country crowd knows all the words to an R&B song? “Back at One” was covered by Mark Wills, climbing to #2 on the country charts in March 2000

Danny’s debut album, My Best Days drops on March 2.

  1. Danny looks like he is having ball!! He seems to be right at home and the audience loves him. Seeing how well all of the S8 contestants are doing in live performances I wonder if they will strike GOLD again this season.

  2. Danny looks like he is having ball!! He seems to be right at home and the audience loves him.

He does seem really relaxed and happy up there on stage. Good for him. I think I almost have hubby convinced that we need to see Sugarland this summer when they come to the DC area, so would get to check out Danny, too, which is cool. We shall see. I fear I may spend way too much $$ on concerts this summer :)

  3. Can’t wait for the Sugarland tour to begin. Danny needs bigger venues to perform in!

Seems like Danny’s talent is almost wasted on the tour he’s on now.

  4. Seems like Danny’s talent is almost wasted on the tour he’s on now.

The appearances he’s doing now vary in size, mostly at the call of the sponsoring radio station, I believe. This one was on the larger side — pic of the big crowd for this concert, as tweeted by Brandon Fraley, the keyboard player/backing vocalist for Danny’s band.

Club dates like that can be fun also. For Danny, fans may be getting to see a longer set now than he’ll have as an opener for Sugarland, plus a closer-up experience of course than in a bigger venue. Hoping to attend at least one of each type this spring/summer ;)

  5. Danny sounds good, and I am glad that he performed in front of a good sized crowd last night. He has been doing a wonderful job with all of these various performances in places like clubs and bars, as well as the performances he’s done on his radio tour. I think that he will do a good job of opening for Sugarland this spring/summer. :)

  6. That was so sweet how he tried to touch everyone’s hands reaching up on stage! He really seemed to be having a great time, and you can tell he loves this song. I guess the fact that a country artist sang it is a good “excuse” for Danny to get some more R&B in. But, as good as he is at getting the audience involved; I would rather just hear Danny!

Tierbee; I scored tickets for the Colorado Springs Sugarland concert with Danny and Julianne Hough and they were only $55. But we did the presale and the tickets were going very fast. We have floor tickets but they are back a ways. So I would recommend trying to hit a presale (I think you can register at some sites to do that) if you want tickets!

  7. Canuck

Danny isn’t going to draw huge crowds on his own, so unless he goes out with an established act that can play big venues, he’s going to do gigs mainly in small and medium sized places — at least until he becomes established enough to suggests he can play bigger venues. Same thing with all the AI8 Idols — none of them are going to be playing big venues on their own yet.

  8. Jake Owen who will also be appearing for parts of the Sugarland tour, has a whole string of club dates and similar appearances on his own that overlap the Sugarland tour. Seems he can do both, wonder if that may be the case for Danny as well — especially given how much Danny loves to work charity fundraisers into his schedule.

Danny has more and more club dates popping up in March/early April. I’ve been thinking they’re serving in part as warm-ups with his larger, non-acoustic band before going out with Sugarland. So far Danny’s only shown acoustic versions of these songs, so it should be pretty interesting to hear them with a full-up, plugged-in band.

  9. Can’t wait for the Sugarland tour to begin. Danny needs bigger venues to perform in!

Seems like Danny’s talent is almost wasted on the tour he’s on now.

Canuck, I know what you mean. Danny’s big voice and vocal power is made for arenas.

I think the tour he’s on now is just a grassroots effort to intro him to the country crowd as a new artist country singer and not an AI alum.

I can’t wait for him to start his first bigger tour also! Its gonna be good for him.

  10. That was weird. I almost cried watching that.

pinkpanda, I think I know how you feel, sometimes when I see him and he’s happy and having fun, I find it touching because it’s nice to see him becoming happy again after everything he has been through.

He looks cute in this, although I kind of miss the scruff! But some fans like the clean shaven look the best, so I guess fair is fair. ;)

  11. This is kinda (actually more than “kinda”) off topic, but I’ve always wanted to see David Cook do a cover of this song ever since I saw his cover of ABMB. Actually, I’d pay to see that.

I like this version, it’s very stripped down and pretty.

  12. I love Danny’s voice. This is a great song and he sounded awesome on it.

  13. So I would recommend trying to hit a presale (I think you can register at some sites to do that) if you want tickets!

Thanks – I’ll keep an eye out for that!

  14. Not a bad crowd for a free concert. Guess the venue made plenty on alcohol…and Mesa Arizona is haven to a bunch of real “country western fanatics”.

  15. I think I almost have hubby convinced that we need to see Sugarland this summer when they come to the DC area, so would get to check out Danny, too, which is cool.

tierbee, the public sale starts Friday 2/26 at ticketfly.com for Sugarland’s May 16th show in Columbia MD. Danny should be there and Jake Owen. I’ve seen a couple of presales for discounted lawn tickets (through WPOC in Baltimore, for one). The official Sugarland fan site has a presale underway for regular seating, you have to join their club though.

Danny will also be at the Winterblast event March 21st in Hampton VA. And Sugarland has one of the “megaticket” concerts September in Bristow VA, outside DC. Haven’t heard if Danny will be there for that.

  16. One of Danny’s strengths is definitely performing live and he seems to please the crowds he’s encountered. Even when he sings songs like this-I really hear no country in his version of this-the country crowd seems to love him and sing along, which is great.

Looking forward to seeing what the huge crowd of Sugarland concertgoers will think of him!

  17. Danny always seems so sincerely happy to meet all of his fans. He’s really good at smiling for all the pictures, no matter how tired he may be after performing and traveling. I couldn’t do that, freak out just having my picture taken once usually :(

I read a comment from a girl on twitter yesterday. She uses a wheelchair, but was able to go to the Phoenix concert. She was sooooooo thrilled that Danny took a moment to make a personal connection with her. It was sweet.

  18. Thanks for posting this video, mj. I love watching Danny perform. He looks so happy and always manages to get the crowd involved. He does a really good job with this song, and I understand that the crowd loves to get involved and sing it, too. But I once saw him sing this at a radio station (without the fans singing), and it was gorgeous…and I’m not even a fan of the song, itself. :)

  19. Even when he sings songs like this-I really hear no country in his version of this-the country crowd seems to love him and sing along, which is great.

This is true. The last time I saw Danny perform live was at one of these country clubs, and the crowd really seemed to love him, eventhough a good many of the songs he sang didn’t sound particularly country. He has a very engaging personality that really shines through from the stage, but also I think that most people appreaciate some awesome singing. And this boy can SANG! :)

  20. As far as Danny and his fans go; I think it is so sweet and an admirable moral character that Danny loves all his fans no matter their appearance, race, sexual preference, age etc, and is not afraid to get up close and personal with them! He walks the talk that way.

I would get sick of touching all those strangers; but he truly at least makes them think he enjoys it lol!

  21. Wow, and they call Adam’s fans cows!?!

Hmmm, if Danny’s fans are all cows, I guess it’s a good thing that there are only 10 or 20 of us. We will all be able to fit into the room when he launches his headline tour at Skeeter’s Bar and Bait. ;)

I think that Danny is definitely a people person. He’s a down to earth regular type of guy who is very personable and interacts with people well. That’s why the vast majority of people that meet him really like/love him including Kix Brooks of the Country duo Brooks and Dunn who said that Danny is a “really good guy”.

I remember him saying before the AI tour started last summer that he was very excited to meet, and interact with fans. He just loves people in general, so it’s definitely not surprising that he’s as warm as he is with his fans.

  23. Hmmm, if Danny’s fans are all cows, I guess it’s a good thing that there are only 10 or 20 of us. We will all be able to fit into the room when he launches his headline tour at Skeeter’s Bar and Bait. ;)

    Lol. Yeah.

That’s why the vast majority of people that meet him really like/love him including Kix Brooks of the Country duo “Brooks and Dunn” who said that Danny is a “really good guy”.

I also heard Kix Brooks saying that this morning on his radio countdown show :) After introducing Danny’s debut on the chart and talking about his album coming out soon, Kix said he met Danny recently and he was a “really good guy.” Haven’t heard it come on yet but he was teasing that he would be playing part of an interview with Danny later in his top 40 countdown show. He said the audience would be impressed by him.

  24. I am anxious to hear the studio version of “Crazy Not To”. I think this will be Danny’s “Back To One”. This was one of the songs Brian Mansfield singled out when he interviewed Danny during the recording of his album. It is suppose to be a romantic ballad.

  25. You can hear a piece of Crazy Not To here, at a streaming preview site for Danny’s CD. I like it.

    http://www.hearsomethingcountry.com/rca/dannygokey/mybestdays/

Of the songs we haven’t heard as much on his promo tour, I also really love Get Away :) I heard he did that one Friday night in front of that packed crowd in Phoenix. Seems like a good high-energy song to include in concerts.

  26. Danny loves all his fans no matter their appearance, race, sexual preference

Not everyone is shallow. I think that some of us are less interested in a person’s appearance, and more interested in the content of their character.

And Jx223, I agree, I really think that Danny is a “people person,” who enjoys meeting and interacting with people. He definately displayed this characteristic this past summer at the AI concerts, as he seemed to come out to meet the fans pretty much every single day, and he was very engaging and all smiles while he did it, too.

He definately displayed this characteristic this past summer at the AI concerts, as he seemed to come out to meet the fans pretty much every single day, and he was very engaging and all smiles while he did it, too.

I have heard a whole lot of people mention how sweet and friendly he is to his fans, and how he’s always giving out hugs, and that he remembers people’s names if he has met them before. I think that’s pretty cool of him, especially since he’s probably met a ton of people.

Danny seems like a sweet regular guy, and a lot of people are regular people and can relate to him. I think that’s why the people like the radio DJ’s and also some of the Country artists, Kix Brooks, Carrie, Dave and Charles of Lady Antebellum have mentioned that’s he’s a good person.

  28. Playing to live crowds is definitely one of Danny’s strengths – as he well proved during the AI summer tour. He was consistently acknowledged by fans, new fans, and critics for connecting and engaging with audiences. That’s why I could not more pleased with the support he has gotten from 19E and RCA Nashville. Danny is still a newbie in the business and I think it’s a huge validation they are having him tour. His album has not even been released yet.

    3-2-1-0 BLASTOFF!!!

  29. Danny has been amazing with his fans, I think. I don’t even know how many videos I’ve watched of him engaging with fans, countless. He is unfailingly warm and engaged. Considering his schedule there must have been many times when he is exhausted and I know there have been times he has not felt well. But he puts the fans first. You can tell he really appreciates them whatever size they happen to come in or whatever they look like, and it is very endearing.

  30. Wow, and they call Adam’s fans cows!?! Sorry, couldn’t resist D:

At least Danny meets and greets his fans – just saying!

If Danny had a stalker during the AI tour, he may not have come out to the barricades either. But having said that, Danny is a people person.

As far as Danny’s fans, all of the idols have fans of every shape, size and age. He sounds great here. He really does have a terrific voice. I am looking forward to him performing on AI this season.

  32. why oh why isnt he singing THIS type of music?
    sooo frustrating!

  33. He is singing it ;) Both here, and in many of his new songs which have a definite soulful/R&B vibe to them, along with the inspirational / emotional ballads we’ve always had from Danny.

He’s recording songs by country songwriters backed by country instrumentals but they are building around Danny’s vocals — not changing them to force a fit into a traditional country sound that wouldn’t make any sense for him. In the acoustic performances, he hasn’t even had distinctively “country” instrumentals but I expect they may add at least some of those elements for the Sugarland tour and warm-up dates.

If Danny had a stalker during the AI tour, he may not have come out to the barricades either. But having said that, Danny is a people person.

I remember that stalker story from the tour. I bet a lot of them have had their share of creepy people to varying degrees. Apart from the things said to him by some online, Danny mentioned recently in a radio interview that there was a married female fan who kept following him around to different AI tour dates and finding a way to get close (too close, evidently) to him in the M&G’s. He said it was making him extremely uncomfortable until he finally told her off.

  34. I remember that stalker story from the tour. I bet a lot of them have had their share of creepy people to varying degrees.

ITA- And there is just no way to weed out the mentally unstable from the normal fans.

Now, book idea here (which is probably not new). Someone should compile interviews from the idols (S1-S8)about fan behavior. I bet it would be fascinating reading.

  35. Now, book idea here (which is probably not new). Someone should compile interviews from the idols (S1-S8)about fan behavior. I bet it would be fascinating reading.

That could be interesting ;) With photos of the gifts, as well — Danny also mentioned in that interview being a bit taken aback by the ueber-sized purple granny panties some fans gave him with his name marked on them :o And didn’t Adam get a ginormous sized stuffed animal one time (on top of other more R-rated gifts, I think)?

It’s all in good fun and love for the most part, I’m sure, even if I’m not the M&G / gift-giving type personally when I go to events like that.

I assume somewhere in the AI bootcamp process, they get some mentoring on how to deal with over-eager to possibly nutso fans and what to expect? Hope so anyway, and of course from their teams for those who are now signed and out more in public.

  36. steph, I remember him talking about that. I think he said she kept getting backstage, and he didn’t know how she was doing that. That must have been tough for him, you can tell that he likes to be friendly and affectionate, but unfortunately there is the occasional delusional person who doesn’t have a firm grip on reality and thinks their imaginary relationship is real. I don’t think he has a problem with letting people know when they have stepped over the line but I am sure he would rather not have to. But it probably comes with the territory to some extent.

  37. undercooked, I love your book idea! I would buy that. (mj are you listening???? I think you should write a book, and undercooked’s idea could be part of it. I am serious!!).

  38. It appears that some are not familiar with the fact that Mark Willis performed this song many years ago on his Second Time Around album.

I’m not confused at all about why Danny would be singing this song at all. While on AI, he stated how much he admired McNight’s music.

His performance is awesome. Can’t wait for his album to be released on March 2nd, and to see him on his first major tour.

  39. why oh why isnt he singing THIS type of music?
    sooo frustrating!

You will be pleasantly surprised if you listen to some full versions of the songs on his album. They are Danny, very soulful and rockish or R&B very frequently. Brian Mansfield told someone on Twitter Danny’s album at times was more “Steve Windwood-ish”. Now, I know some traditionalists will not like that; but I think we see enough trend toward country fusion that I really hope enough people like his soul country blend. Count me in! (confessed former non country fan ,lol)

Now, book idea here (which is probably not new). Someone should compile interviews from the idols (S1-S8)about fan behavior. I bet it would be fascinating reading.

Great idea Undercooked! That would be such funny reading. I remember being a little shocked when I heard Danny saying in an interview that he had to tell that woman (who kept sneaking backstage) to her face that he “had no interest in breaking up her marriage and had no interest in her”. I just thought wow; she must have been really out there for Danny to be so blunt with her. I can only imagine some of the other Idol’s fan behavior also!

  40. Someone on twitter sent the link to this previous Back at One performance, it was another really good one by Danny early in his radio tour. Forgot how fun it was to watch the radio station peep in the corner bopping away to it :)

Just watched @dannygokey sing back at one YouTube. Seriously what an amazing talent! Dzzzzzamn

  41. Every time I watch/listen to Danny sing live it reminds me how special he really is. I truely believe he will be successful because he has one heck of a voice and he has a genuine relationship with his fans. Looked like he and his fans were really enjoying this performance.

Danny seems to be doing a number of club dates like this in March and April :) He’s got another at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, also clubs in Knoxville TN, Jacksonville FL and some others.

  44. Hey! I just saw this on my Ticketmaster page. Do Danny fans know about this? This looks like it is a solo concert!

    Thanks Tiger92!

Danny does appear to have a number of club shows interspersed with or before he starts the big tour with Sugarland.

Lucky for fans in those areas! That is a better way to see him up close, personal and cheap before the big tour starts.

  45. This song was a #1 hit by Wills, safe choice for Danny.Danny was always ‘on’ when greeting people in line. That turned me off, but I don’t have to like someone to like their singing and there were some great songs he sang on AI. Other than his bigotry, he does like people.

  46. Saw that another radio station has an appearance by Danny next week for his CD release, this time on March 3rd in San Jose.

Danny’s so very busy, I’ve been really impressed despite that how much effort he’s putting into performing at each stop. Rarely does fewer than 4 songs, often several more than that.

    http://krty.com/Danny-Gokey-CD-Release-Party-/6418598

Wonder if Sony will let him borrow the corporate jet again for his album release week schedule. He’s literally going coast to coast and then various stops in between before arriving home in Milwaukee for his concert at Turner Hall.

  47. Danny’s so very busy, I’ve been really impressed despite that how much effort he’s putting into performing at each stop

Danny Gokey is a machine! I am also impressed how day after day he does these live performances (acoustically, no less; no room for errors there), does them well, then has enough energy to be as welcoming, patient and kind to all fans. I still can’t get over how at the Grafton event at Thanksgiving, he rode in the parade (in the cold), sang the mini concert in a gym sounding great, then after he did the meet and greet for 100 VIP fans, went down the line (there were probably at least 30 lingerers) and hugged every one of us. And it was no token hug, lol- there was a lot of strength and sincerity in that hug.

I hope Sony lets them borrow the jet again because he does appear to be in a different state from CA to FLA to WI almost every day.

  48. It is really interesting to see the judgments people feel they are entitled to make with little to no information. I don’t think it is worth getting into detail here, as to why Danny is so fond of Brian McKnight’s BA 1.

Let’s just suffice it to say, his song choice had nothing to do with Wills, and that the song has very special meaning to him, and that it is highly personal.

You fellow Danny fans know what I am talking about. It isn’t worth rehashing here.

Danny does one heck of a job on that song. You can tell it is special to him.
