Danny mentions in the first part of the T-R-O-U-B-L-E video from Vermont that he will have his own 36-city tour coming up this fall.  Specifics on the tour have not yet been announced, but dates that have come to light on Danny’s schedule through October include fairs and festivals in Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, and Kansas; charity benefit concerts in Tennessee and Virginia; a radio station acoustic concert in Buffalo NY; and other dates at club and theater venues including Philadelphia area and Vancouver B.C.

CMT Minute with Danny Gokey

Danny tries to answer as many questions as possible in a minute for CMT. Seems to have been taped earlier in the year, but just recently posted at CMT.com.

  1. Great compilation post. Looks like Danny has yet another new pair of glasses. Me likey the shade look, lol. I am really curious to know more about the 36 city Fall tour, as details unfold. Curious to find out if he will have opening acts. But performing live is the kind of thing Danny thrives in. And I would love to see Danny perform outside of the U.S, since he has a lot of fans abroad.

  2. I hope that Danny’s 36 city tour goes well for him. I think it’s a good idea to include the festivals/fairs as apart of his tour. He can probably draw nice sized crowd at events like those. I also wonder who will open for him as well.

Any Danny fans have any suggestion about who you want or think should open for him?

Jennette Mccurdy (a young country singer, who also plays on
I-Carly) is his opening act on October 9 at a concert in Salina, KS. And there are other people that have opened for him at different places.

I am interested in seeing who he gets to open for him on his tour.

  3. This man just exudes charisma on stage, he brings such joy and energy when performing.

If you are not following Danny and just want to casually watch one or 2 of the above videos to see how he’s doing, I highly recommend TROUBLE/MBAAOM. He appeared very confident and comfortable on stage, had a total command of audience attention feeding off the crowd’s energy, a truly stella performance.

Who would have thought a bi-spectacle guy whose only performance experience before AI was singing in church, without theatrical make up or OTT costume or elaborate stage deco, could sing & move a crowd like a “Rock Star”?

  4. Wow, 36 cities? If you count 3 months as Fall that is almost 3 concerts weekly; I guess that is the pace he has been at (or more) for singing appearances.

Jx, I will be interested to see what kind of an opener Jeanette will make. She certainly could bring in some younger fans. That event sounds like it could hold about 6000 people; between the Boy Scouts, their families and the tickets on sale to the general public. I wonder who will the the 3rd initial opener? Perhaps someone local?

I think Danny needs an opener who is pop/rock country like he is and appeals to younger fans. Love n Theft, Steel Magnolia, Band Perry? I know Steel Magnolia and The Band Perry usually have lower billing than Danny does at multiple artist events, but may have better chart success so far, so may not want to be an “opener”.

Seems like a difficult thing to find a good opener who will help put butts in seats but won’t mind opening when you are such a new artist like Danny is.

I wonder if pairing him with Jeanette at the Orange carpet interviews for ACM and having her open for him in Kansas are a hint of continued appearances.

    Indigo,

I do think that Jennette could bring in some younger fans for Danny. Plus they seem to like each other, and have a good rapport together.

Maybe she might end up opening for him for some more shows.

As far as groups, like Love n Theft, The Band Perry and Steel Magnolia go, I can’t see any of them being Danny’s opening act for a lot of shows on his tour either.

Even though least some of those groups have had lower billing at Danny at events with mulitple artists, I can’t see them opening for him throughout all/most of his tour. Especially since they have had/do have higher charting songs on the radio right now than he does.

I agree that it might be hard for Danny to find someone to open for him, who can attract fans, but not mind being second billing to him.

And I think it would be interesting if there does end up being three acts and Danny has another opening act.

  6. Where was there discussion of two opening acts for Danny? I doubt that would be the plan for the nice-sized but not huge venues I’ve seen so far.
ETA: Oh, was that for the Salina KS event? That one may be large enough that they could have someone else, agree it might be a local talent.

Chris Janson opened twice for Danny. Also Hunter something, apologies to him for forgetting his last name Hayes, a young country artist. But I’d rather it be someone with a little more name recognition if they have a regular opener on Danny’s tour. Jennette does strike me as an interesting option. Or there are a lot of other new female artists who don’t seem to be touring a lot this year, perhaps one of them.

There haven’t been any recent hints but Danny did say in a July interview that the plan was for another newer country act to be opening. I doubt it would be anyone like TBP or Steel Magnolia, that would be more of a co-tour I think though Danny generally does pull higher billing. And SM has been touring with Brad Paisley, don’t know when that ends.

I had the impression from Danny’s comment that the opener they were thinking of in July was more a solo artist. But I don’t think LNT would find anything awkward about touring with Danny, especially as they are without a label and need to keep their name out there. (Though they were tweeting yesterday about going into the studio, not sure in what capacity.)

  7. Any Danny fans have any suggestion about who you want or think should open for him?

Oh, that’s a good question. I do agree that the opening act should be someone more in the modern country field like Danny. Possibly female, to attract more diverse fans (especially with Jamie Fraley leaving Danny’s band to go back and sing back-up for Carrie Underwood).

Now, I don’t think the opening act should be another Idol. I know Matt Bjorke, who is a huge fan of Danny’s, at one point suggested Michael Sarver. MS probably wouldn’t have problem doing it, since he and Danny are friends. But each is also trying to work on their individual careers. And MS is way more traditional Country.

  8. AIaddict, did you see that Danny will be in Jacksonville this fall?

Just recently announced for November 12th at the 2010 Greater Jacksonville Fair.

I think you’ll see Danny in Florida pretty often, he seems to be pretty popular there and has commented more than once how much he enjoys visiting there. His cruise leaves from Tampa in February also :)

One of the best shows I’ve seen for Danny was when he performed to near capacity crowd at the House of Blues in Orlando, awesome show :)

  9. But I’d rather it be someone with a little more name recognition if they have a regular opener on Danny’s tour. Jennette does strike me as an interesting option. Or there are a lot of other new female artists who don’t seem to be touring a lot this year, perhaps one of them.

I think it would have been interesting and cool if Danny had did something like a co-headlining tour and hooked up with like The Band Perry or Steel Magnolia. I could have seen something like that working out.

There are some up and coming country girl groups, like Stealing Angels and JaneDear Girls, who are moving up on radio right now.

Maybe one of those girl groups might be considered for an opening act for him. (If they have time and might want to do it). Maybe like one of those groups could at least open some shows for him?

  10. Oh my gosh I love that clip of You Are So Beautiful. It is so sweet how he gives Brandon the spotlight sometimes in his shows, and when Danny takes it his voice is just so beautiful. And he is so cute. *fangirl sigh*, lol! I think all these videos are good. Aladdict, I just love this guy too – hope he makes it back to Florida during his fall tour for you!

I think it would be nice to see Danny with a few more dates with Jennette M. I remember he was really sweet to her on that Orange Carpet thing, bringing her into the conversation. Hope he gets a good mix of people to open for him that will help give him visibility to more and more new fans.

  11. Oh, that’s a good question. I do agree that the opening act should be someone more in the modern country field like Danny. Possibly female, to attract more diverse fans (especially with Jamie Fraley leaving Danny’s band to go back and sing back-up for Carrie Underwood).

I remember when Matt suggested that too. I could see Michael agreeing to do that if he were asked, but I think it might better if Danny got someone else to open for him instead. (Even though I do like Michael Sarver.) Unless Mike opened for him for like a few shows instead of most of the tour. Even though I like Mike I don’t really think that he would bring in that many new fans for Danny. Though I could see Michael picking up new fans out of the Danny fanbase.

  12. I know Matt Bjorke, [..] suggested Michael Sarver. MS probably wouldn’t have problem doing it, since he and Danny are friends. But each is also trying to work on their individual careers. And MS is way more traditional Country.

I read that, thought it was a bad idea for both Danny and Michael, lol–though as things have developed with Michael’s album, on reconsideration it would be good for him.

But Danny so far has done a great job getting himself out in concert events that have nothing to do with piggybacking on other AI artsts. And no offense to Michael, but I’m not sure he would bring in more than a handful of fans to Danny’s events who wouldn’t already be going to see Danny.

I didn’t think the couple of songs I saw from Michael were that traditional country. But I’m not sure he’s really even seriously trying for country anymore, really confused me that they never announced any date attempting to get his single added for country radio and then he went immediately to talking about recording a Christmas album. He had an interesting description recently on his twitter about his Christmas album project. “michaelsarver1: This album has a huge mix of country, soul, jazz, a little country rock, and all kinds of stuff!”

I think Danny should get someone who is from the regular country scene, just as he’s been doing so far.

I enjoyed that clip of “You Are So Beautiful as well, Josie. :) I think that both Brandon and Jamie have nice voices.

  14. Yes, re 3rd act-I was referring to the Salina, KS event- they mentioned they have a second opener not yet billed.

Oh, I know, SM and TBP are too big to open for Danny; just trying to think of similar young new groups in the modern country vein, realizing they are too big and seeing how difficult the “perfect” opener will be!

Michael Sarver- just no. Bad idea on all fronts. Both need to get away from AI association. Michael would not bring in new fans for Danny, and he would not want to be an opener for Danny either, IMO, even though they are friends.

I like the girl group idea Jx223! Nice thought! And isn’t Eric Church doing more of a co-headlining tour with someone (is it Josh Thompson?), could be a similar idea. The addition of some estrogen in the band has been great; I will miss Jamie when she goes back to Carrie.

Speaking of Estrogen, I just can’t get over how freakin adorable it is when those tweens/teens hand Danny all those silly bands (Trouble/MBDAAOM vid) and he goes through the trouble (while singing and moving, lol) of taking them all and carefully putting them on his wrists. The guy is a sweetheart through and through.

I think it would be interesting if Danny did get someone like Stealing Angels or JaneDear Girls opening for him. They might could help expand his fanbase.

I remember that Josh and Eric were touring together earlier this year. I think that Josh might have been opening for Eric. I think it would be cool if Danny could co-headline with another country act sometime in the future.

  16. I just hope it’s not Trailer Choir, lol, even though they and Danny did perform at an event recently.

You were at the HOB show? me too! that’s where I saw just how great Danny is. I really was not a big fan until I went along with a friend to see Danny and wow! he is great live.

No! I have not seen a tour schedule where is it? thanks for the info because Jacksonville is not that far away from me. I’ll have to pass on the cruise though. Can’t handle cruises just not my thing.

  18. Aladdict, yes, that was just a great show for Danny in Orlando :) I’ve heard that for months after, he described that as possibly the best crowd he’d had for that type of club show.

He’s gotten even better on stage since then though… ;)

There is a calendar with listings and details for Danny’s events here, it is the most complete and up-to-date I know of. You can find the Jacksonsville event on the November entries.

dannygokey.com also posts Danny’s events, but not usually quite as comprehensive.

  19. Great post, Steph! The second photo is amazing.

Oh my gosh I love that clip of You Are So Beautiful. It is so sweet how he gives Brandon the spotlight sometimes in his shows, and when Danny takes it his voice is just so beautiful.

I just loved hearing Danny’s voice on the clip of You Are so Beautiful with Brandon Fraley. Wow. Such control and power.

Its fun watching his interaction with his band mates. And his sense of humor never seems to leave him–as he jokes after the last note on Raining on Sunday.(Which is my favorite cover song that Danny performs in his full shows.)

On Danny’s CD, I think I Will Not Say Goodbye is the most beautifully written song. I heard that the record company was going to put it out as an extra (not on the actual CD) until they heard Danny sing it. Then they knew they had it to add it. I think it deserves to be a hit.

  20. Lucy’s Fave:

Raining on Sunday is my favorite cover too. It just weakens my knees, lol.

I do agree that I Will Not Say Goodbye is the best song on his album according to critics and many others.

He definitely needs a slow, seductive love song on his next album. My favorite on this CD is the only love song “Crazy Not To”; but that is a fun, upbeat poppy love song and he excels at songs like Raining on Sunday and Come Rain or Come Shine.

I know he is not at that place in his life to record that type of song, but please- next time around!

  21. Raining on Sunday is just mmmmmm ;) Lol!

Though I also lately have really been loving Hard to Handle among the newer covers.

I like Tiny Life and IWNSG about equally well for the ballads on Danny’s current album.

I just loved hearing Danny’s voice on the clip of You Are so Beautiful with Brandon Fraley. Wow. Such control and power.

That was fun to watch. Brandon’s voice is somewhat higher than Danny’s, & seemed to me they were more in Brandon’s natural key than Danny’s. But Danny kept up with it even despite the higher key than I remember him singing it in before.

  22. He (Danny) definitely needs a slow, seductive love song on his next album.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Until then, I’ll just keep watching Raining On Sunday. The video from a Kentucky show was spellbinding….

  23. Stop it Steph!

I need to get something accomplished today, lol!

  24. Thanks for the write-up and great videos. I feel Danny is doing a super job of entertaining us. I’m so impressed how much he and his band have progressed in this area. Going to a Danny Gokey is pure fun!!!! =)

  25. I totally agree with everyone’s opinion on Danny’s stunning version of “Raining On Sunday”! After hearing how incredible he sounds on that big romantic ballad, I am really hoping he has a song like that on his next album…absolutely beautiful!

Loved the video of “You Are So Beautiful” too…his range and versatility on that song are amazing. It seems to me that he changes this song up on each video I have watched of him performing it. Such fun to see his ease and playfulness with his bandmates…he and Brandon are adorable together!

Thanks again Steph for another great Danny thread…keep them coming!

  26. Danny does seem to interact well with the band members, and enjoy the back and forth with Brandon. I remember when they used to do that with both Brandon and Greg Hagan when he was in the band for lead guitar and backing vocals.

I think it was Greg who commented after Danny’s travel schedule grew too much for him that Danny was “very generous with his stage” by giving the band members some real time for solo spots showcasing their own vocals.

  27. I love the black & white photo of Danny smiling down at his adoring fans! Got to see Danny headlining at a small venue a while back, before his CD came out. I was singing and dancing all night long. Felt like a kid again! (Except my voice was hoarse the next morning. *blushes*) Also saw Danny at a Sugarland concert. Judging by recent videos, Danny keeps getting better and better, as far as his ease and command of the stage goes. He’s always been able to sing well and connect with fans, IMO. Now he’s getting the moves down as well.

I am really looking forward to seeing Danny in Canada, which I’m pretty sure is part of his fall tour. As far as openers, I’d love to see Mallary Hope or Jennette McCurdy open for him. (I was impressed with Jennette’s poise on the orange carpet.) But NO to STEALING Angels. Just no. (Sorry. That’s just me.) I’d be okay with the JaneDear Girls or even the Trailer Choir. There are a lot of new female country artists, but I’m not sure any of them have fanbases that will be helpful to Danny at this point: Ashley Gearing, Joanna Smith, Sarah Darling, Rachel Proctor, Megan Mullins, or Elizabeth Shea? I think because Danny is so new himself, it will be hard to find an act that has enough of a fanbase to complement his own. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if Love And Theft opened for Danny. Or Margaret Durante, who I also like.

Another idea: Maybe it would be better, instead of having the same opener for all the dates, to have different openers depending on the locale. For example, Chris Janson in Tennessee, Margaret Durante in the D.C./Maryland area, maybe even Michael Sarver in Texas. That way the local openers can contribute their fanbases and provide more exposure for Danny. (And vice versa.)

Anyway, thanks for a great thread!

  28. There is a calendar with listings and details for Danny’s events here, it is the most complete and up-to-date I know of. You can find the Jacksonsville event on the November entries.

Thanks for the link! I’m checking into that Jacksonville show.

  29. Our NC State Fair is in October. Hopefully his tour will not have started by then!

  30. Not sure if you are pro or anti-Danny at your state fair from your post MrDuffin but yes, Danny will open your state fair Oct 14.

Concert ticket prices are minimal but are separate from fair admission.

He is in good company with other country stars like Easton Corbin, Chris Young, Justin Moore, Darius Rucker on other nights. Nice line up; maybe I need a little warm weather trip in October ;)

  31. Another great post Steph!

I was at the Cleveland event yesterday and Danny was very well received. The friend I was with thaought he was the only act to get the crowd really going up to that point. The Band Perry were in the slot previous to him but he did a lot more songs, Gloriana was up next for reasons that will never be clear, so he had a pretty hhigh ranking. There were about 3000 or more there( hard to tell as people are moving about all the time) yesterday and although it did rain it didn’t slow Danny down at all.

When he sang I Will Not Say Goodbye and dedicated it to the 911 victims the flags came out and the crowd sang along. I really believe he will tour with an even bigger act next year as he is just to good on stage.

  32. Steph, the pictures you post of Danny just keep getting better and better or maybe it is Danny himself who just keeps looking hotter and hotter.

Certain, thank you for sharing your experience seeing Danny in Cleveland. How special is that – he sang I Will Not Say Goodbye honoring the victims of 9/11 along with flags and the crowd singing -wish I could have seen that.

Looking forward to news of his 36 city tour – I will be seeing him at the Frederick, MD fair in a couple of weeks – can’t wait.

  33. I like Tiny Life and IWNSG about equally well for the ballads on Danny’s current album.

My favorite ballad on Danny’s album is “Tiny Life”. But I think that IWNSGB has one of the best studio versions of his songs on his album.

I think it could be interezting and fun if Danny did end up having different openers for his concerts.

  34. Steph, the pictures you post of Danny just keep getting better and better or maybe it is Danny himself who just keeps looking hotter and hotter.

Lucy1234, it is a sacrifice I have to make to examine lots of pics of Danny in choosing ones to post here ;)

And thanks again to mj’s poster BigNLiddle for her pics.

  35. Wow, Danny in 36 cities for his fall tour! Can’t wait to work out my calendar once we have the dates! He is a fantastic live entertainer, and his voice is even better live than on his CD.

It seems that Danny is a bit of an anomaly as far as a new act in country music. It is so early in his career, yet he already has a full hour and half set that, according to most reviews, is comparable to artists that have been around a lot longer. Add to that the fact that he has one album out for about 6 months with only two singles released so far, and no prior experience on stage, it is amazing that he has grown so quickly into the stage performer we see now.

  36. It seems that Danny is a bit of an anomaly as far as a new act in country music

I agree with your observation. I want to point out that, whether we see Danny as the 3rd place finisher in S8 or as a new Country artist whose debut album came out just 6 months ago, the fact that a) he has been doing over 150 shows since last November & will have a Fall Tour, b)consistently drawing the largest crowd in shows consisting of various acts, c)filling out venues that sits over 1000 in solo concerts and d) putting out a 1.5 hour set fronting a 6 member band, is truly remarkable.

  37. I can’t wait to see the fall tour schedule for Danny. As for opening acts, no to Michael Sarver. Danny (and Michael as well) need to step out of the AI shadow/bubble. So, touring together wouldn’t be a good idea. Stealing Angels would be good. Not sure if they’d want to tour with Danny, though. One of them is the granddaughter of Loretta Lynn and another one the granddaughter of John Wayne. They have connections. LOL!! But, they could help each other get the extra exposure. Jeannette McCurdy would be OK. She would bring in the younger crowd. How about Laura Bell Bundy?? Radio isn’t giving her much attention, but CMT loves her. And, she’s so energetic.

  38. Stealing Angels would be good. Not sure if they’d want to tour with Danny, though. One of them is the granddaughter of Loretta Lynn and another one the granddaughter of John Wayne. They have connections.

Unfortunately connections won’t get you people to buy tickets and their single isn’t doing that well.

Still think it will be one of the new acts that Sony signed this year.

  39. LBB; interesting Chearts77! She doesn’t have the biggest emphasis on vocals, IMO, but she is energetic and would put on an energetic show.
After viewing her video, I would say she could draw male fans ;) which every former AI artist could use (we all know they are heavy on the female fan side).

    Certain1:

Do you know all the new acts they did sign? The only I know of would be Casey James, Chris Jansen, Is Jeanette with Sony?

You are probably right. Danny is so new, like Kokko and Asics pointed out- album out 6 months, on second single, and not to mention no music presence before AI- no CD, public performances, band etc. So it would seem intuitive it would have to be a real newbie to open for him.

  40. For all I know, maybe by this point they aren’t thinking anymore to have a regular opening act. But in the one interview where I did hear Danny say something about that, it sounded to me as if it was someone we would have heard of.

Am I allowed to say anything about that? [after looking at Mike] – Not at this point. But we have a Fall tour. It’s gonna be me and another artist that’s coming up. I’ll be the one headlining at our own show. But those details are yet to be… there’s a lot of stuff we’re still working on right now.

In that quote, I took the “another artist that’s coming up” as a description similar to how Danny would describe himself (“artist that’s coming up”). So two up and coming acts, but of the two he would be headlining.

But could be he meant someone who’s just trying to make any impression now, which might be someone like a Chris Janson who seemed very grateful to Danny the two times I saw Chris opening for him. In any event, that interview comment was ~6 weeks back though, so may well have changed plans by now. I don’t think it has to be a lesser-known/totally new artist to open for Danny. From what I can see, as far as touring Danny and co. are approaching things not much like a brand-new artist would, but more as one who’s been around a little longer. And so far, it’s working pretty well for him.

ETA: Also the way Danny spoke in that interview had me thinking the opener they had in mind, would be a solo artist.

  41. LBB; interesting Chearts77! She doesn’t have the biggest emphasis on vocals, IMO, but she is energetic and would put on an energetic show.
After viewing her video, I would say she could draw male fans which every former AI artist could use (we all know they are heavy on the female fan side

I think that LBB could work as an opener for Danny. She is fun and she’s got some attention for her video/song “Giddy on Up”. And I think that she could draw some new fans for Danny including male fans.

  42. Indigo and Jx, yes, LBB has some success on CMT with her Giddy on Up video. I wish that song did better on radio. She’s very energetic and will bring in the male fans. She is in Miranda’s new video for Only Prettier. So, she has plenty of exposure there. Enough to get people to want to come see the show if they aren’t too familiar with Danny yet. It would be a very energetic show for sure between the two of them. :)

  43. I don’t understand why Danny is only singing 3 songs from his album and 5 covers? You would think he would rather get his music out there? Just wondering out loud (or I mean by text) :)

  44. Sagi,

For a full show where Danny is the headliner he sings every song on his album and then adds around 4 covers to fill out his hour and half long set.

As an opener he will have a couple of covers in addition to all or almost all of the songs on his album, depending on how long he gets in his set.

I really look forward to when he has his second album out so we can hear more of his own music, but right now he only has ten songs to work with.

  45. sagi, I’m not sure what you mean…just from the videos I posted?

I posted the ones that videos were available for. Four of the songs are from Danny’s album. Crazy Not To, I Still Believe, It’s Only, and My Best Days. The others that hit YT as of this morning happened to be covers but I’m quite sure Danny also sang I Will Not Say Goodbye in Vermont, and probably Tiny Life, Be Somebody, Life on Ya, Get Away, etc.

In his full concerts, Danny will sing all ten songs from his album. He does that on a routine basis, plus adds in some covers, up to 16-17 songs total. The covers lately are What Hurts the Most, Back at One, Raining on Sunday, Hard to Handle, T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Life is a Highway, Livin’ on a Prayer.

When he has to fit into shorter time windows, he does anywhere from 4 of his own songs in a 5-song set, on up depending on how much time he has. Last time I saw him, when he opened for Lady A on Sep 2nd, he had about an hour and did all but one of his album songs, plus several covers.

  46. I wish Danny had an hour and a half worth of his own songs to sing :) Some day.

But I enjoy his covers as well. Fan recordings vary widely in quality, so Steph cherry picks the best ones.

When I’ve seen him at his own headliners he sings all of his album and about 5 or 6 covers. When I saw him with Sugarland he had 5 songs and sang 4 of his own and one cover (What Hurts the Most).

I think some covers are a good idea. When you are new like any new act it is fun to sing songs people know all the words to so they can sing along and are very familiar. A lot of people know all the words to some of Danny’s songs -much to my annoyance; I hate it when I am trying to hear Danny and they are all singing around me :( , but more casual or new fans don’t so it’s fun to have some covers.

  47. Man, do I have to find time to listen to all these, lol. I have to wait till later today. It’s my bedtime. Thanks so much for all the info, steph.:-)

  48. Wow Steph,
I guess I never counted how many songs Danny sings in his full show! I knew he always did all ten songs from his album, but up to seven additonal songs is a lot! No wonder so many who attend his concerts come away saying it is one of the best they have been to. It is still hard to believe he sings that many songs though because that hour and half goes by way too fast in my opinion…lol!

  49. Danny’s performed every song off his album, except the Bonus Track on Itunes, “The Coach”. I wouldn’t mind hearing Danny perform “The Coach” in public some day, because I have grown to like that song. The more I listen to it, the more I like it.

But I don’t think there are any immediate plans for him to perform that song in public. I think that Danny does a good job mixing up his own songs, plus covers that he does well with at his concerts.

  50. For me, Danny’s a better live performer than in recording, even on youtube you can see how good he is. My friend was at the Vermont fair and she told me that there were very few who watched his performance, I guess it’s understandable for a new artist. I have to give him props because he is so dedicated with his career, if you will compare him with Adam and Kris, he is very keen on promoting his stuff on twitter (buying his new merch/single/album, calling/voting for radio, and even promoting SHF) while the two I mentioned does not utilize their twitter very well. Some might think of it as shameless promotion but that is the kind of spirit that will make him last in the recording scene.

  51. Hi Bianca, thanks for commenting about Danny.

The Vermont fair seems to have been a small affair; not sure if weather affected attendance or it is just small.
Fair personnel said that Danny actually had two to three times the amount of people Wynona Judd had (sad) and even more than that for Rick Springfield so for the size of the fair he did ok.

I agree with you; he is a “give it 110%” kind of person and performer as far as his career/foundation. Sometimes I wonder if losing his wife and being alone makes him just throw everything he has into it.

I think his recorded voice is beautiful. But his pitch and power are so good live (which not everyone can do) as well as his energy that he does impress live.

  52. My understanding from a friend who attended is that the Vermont fair wasn’t a very large event, but there were ~300 people there and nearly all of them stayed for his signing after the show.

That’s less than Danny usually gets, but for that event seems to me it was ok. He apparently got 3-4 times the number of people who attended Wynonna’s show at the same event, and I gather the cooler weather didn’t help the fair organizers. (That was ouch to hear for Wynonna though, I was told she got less than a hundred at her show in Vermont.)

One thing I love with Danny, you can’t tell from watching the videos if he’s performing to 300 people or 3000, which is how many he had at another headlining show I attended a couple of weeks ago further south. Danny throws everything he has into it either way.

Seems to me a good thing for new artists to weather different types of events and audiences, and learn to make the best of each one as they build their touring experience. I’m told at the Cleveland Country Jam, the crowd was several thousand. So Danny got both ends of the spectrum this weekend, it seems.

  53. Thanks for the added info Indigo and Steph, I did not know that Danny was able to headline for 3000 people already, that’s good for him. I’m really happy that he settled with the country route, fans there seems to be more accepting and warm. I like Danny but I cannot openly declare it because my friends, relatives, and co-workers who followed AI8 doesn’t like him, it’s like you are not a cool kid if you like him :( I hope the so called bad reputation he had at AI will eventually not matter to the general audience.

  54. Thanks Steph again!
Danny needs a female singer to complement him – Taylor Swift type but not Taylor Swift.
He’s doin great! But, I hope his record label doesn’t burn him out. Wouldn’t that be two tours back to back?

  55. I like Danny but I cannot openly declare it because my friends, relatives, and co-workers who followed AI8 doesn’t like him, it’s like you are not a cool kid if you like him

Awww, Bianca! You are definitely not alone. In the real world there are many who love Danny. After all, he did come in third on American Idol- and was even the favorite to win up until about top 5. Real life people by far know nothing about all the manufactured stories on the net about Danny’s personality, motives. And there have been so many apologies and retractions from people who have met him and realized they were mistaken about him- he is a warm, humble, down to earth and accepting fun person.

You are right; sometimes I think some people do not think it is “cool” to like him because he is a “good” boy, lol. I personally find that quite appealing in many ways ;) but some don’t.

His fans know it is an uphill battle for him (really, it is for many Idols) picking a genre (although he had to pick something if he didn’t want to continue to sing Gospel) he loves but that may not accept or play him on radio. And he lost fans who aren’t Country fans.

But although many people are surprised he has done as well as he has, I think it is a tip off that many do like him, even if they may not be very vocal.

  56. I think his recorded voice is beautiful. But his pitch and power are so good live (which not everyone can do) as well as his energy that he does impress live.

I think so too. In his recorded voice you can hear that beautiful tone, and the extraordinary range and flexibility that he has. And you can hear the same thing when he performs live and add to it the great energy that he brings to it.

I also agree that the “bad reputation” is wholly a manufactured “AI Bubble” phenomenon. I remember last year I didn’t understand how that all works as well as I do now…sitting there listening to the first cellcast of the AI tour, and Danny was given a huge roar of approval from the crowd for his appearance. I listened to many of them and it was always the same thing, he was always at least Top 3 in the reaction from the crowd. Danny is a kind and good person, and he has consistently demonstrated this while basically living under a microscope for quite awhile now. Most people have no idea of the made up nonsense in the Bubble and even if they are, it has no chance to prevail against what has been consistently demonstrated to be true.

The “cool kids” thing doesn’t really resonate with me because it’s just not my nature to let anyone else think they are entitled to make a ruling as to what is “cool” or not as far as informing what I personally think and do. They can decide that for themselves and I will do the same. Don’t let them rattle you Bianca, this is not just about Danny but I promise you that stating your own preferences with confidence is the ultimate in cool. I’m glad you enjoy watching Danny’s performances, hope you get to see him live one of these days! :)

  57. Vermont has a number of fairs that happen at the end of the summer. The most popular one is the Champlain Valley Fair – the one that Kris performed at a few weeks ago with Keith. They are the ones that get the bigger acts (Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, etc). I told Danny when I met him this past Friday that he should have came to that fair instead — for this reason lol. Rutland is NOT the “cleanest” city in VT…which is why I felt bad Danny was there :P Doesn’t represent us at all lol

  58. Danny needs a female singer to complement him – Taylor Swift type but not Taylor Swift.
He’s doin great! But, I hope his record label doesn’t burn him out. Wouldn’t that be two tours back to back?

I agree, a female singer would be nice. It’s great to see him with Jamelle, I will miss her.

He has toured non stop; starting with radio tours in December I think?
It would seem like a bit much, but he loves to perform live and entertain and the man seems to have boundless energy. Good, clean living I guess, lol. Hope the band keeps up with him ;)

  59. Good, clean living I guess, lol.

Awhile back I saw some guy on twitter thanking Danny for running 5 miles with him that day. I had figured that he must be doing a pretty intense aerobics program to be able to run all over the stage and still sing the way he does. And of course one can tell just by looking at him that he pays pretty close attention to that stuff, he is so fit and his skin is perfect. I saw that recently Carrie was made some kind of spokesperson or something for Oil of Olay. If a company ever needs a male version of something like that, Danny would certainly be a good advertisement for whatever they were peddling!

  60. I have a soft spot for Danny, but his look and the dancing is a bit too much George Michael for my tastes. I’m also getting a bit tired of the “do good deeds, love thy neighbor and eat all your vegetables” message being pounded on my skull in nearly every song.

  61. No worries negativo, we all have our different tastes. I see Danny as a good guy who wants to do good things, but I also think he is funny and sexy and just kind of an explosion of joy when he performs. I don’t really agree that nearly every song with him is about a “message”. Some are, but there are lots of fun ones too. And he seems to be getting more comfortable with the swoony romantic ones, which is a good thing because he just kills on those.

  62. Hi I personally love Danny Gokey….he was amazing on Idol and has been amazing since….I had made plans to see him at the Vermont State Fair unfortunately my car frame broke and I couldnt make it the night before…I had planned and saved for 2 months to go see him since i live just an hour away…but things changed i had to buy another car which left my finances short to go to fair….i love the videos on here and am so upset he was fab and i couldnt be there so hoping he comes back this way soon so i can get a chance to see him then…Love ya Danny…always a fan…Cindy

  63. Hello again…just wanted to let Danny know my grandkids listen to him too and my 8 year old granddaughter is singing his song My best days…in her talent show this year at school….she sings it all the time around the house ….we love you Danny always keep it real …Cindy

  64. Cindy, I am so sorry that things didn’t work out for you to see Danny this time and I do hope his fall tour includes a location where you can go see him! I am going to see him for the first time myself next month, in Vancouver, so I understand how much you’re looking forward to it!

  65. Cindy, he will also be in Springfield MA for the “big E” event later this month, not sure if you could make that? He is well worth seeing, especially when doing his own shows.

And thankfully, I haven’t heard him sing about vegetables yet ;)

BignLiddle, that’s interesting about the different VT fairs, if the “State Fair” isn’t the one as many people go to. I’m not sure though if Danny could have made an earlier date, his schedule was pretty crammed in August with events in other areas of the country. September may have looked attractive to do an event in New England as it seems to be a month where he has relatively fewer appearances–possibly a breather before the 36-city tour kicks off?

  66. steph6449 thank u i was just checking out his next concerts and see he is coming to Springfield so I gonna try to make it there ….heres hoping…..

  67. Steph, do you have the complete list of the 36-city tour? And are all of these headlining tours?

  68. And thankfully, I haven’t heard him sing about vegetables yet ;)

Nope, just cold drinks and birthday cake so far as food items go I think, lol!

  69. And thankfully, I haven’t heard him sing about vegetables yet ;)

Nope, just cold drinks and birthday cake so far as food items go I think, lol!

Well, counting jingles and little snippets he’s sung to himself in interviews, I’ve also heard about coffee (Folgers) and chicken fries (ZBB excerpt). :)
    .

Bianca, the most complete calendar I know of for Danny’s events is here. That site has a twitter/Facebook that post updates when new events come to light for him. Dannygokey.com also has an Events list which has been getting more complete, but not as exhaustive or updated as often as the fansite calendar.

The 36-city tour hasn’t been announced in specifics yet. I’m thinking there may be a press release? But one of those two sites should have information as soon as it becomes known.

From Danny’s description, all of the dates on the 36-city tour would be his own shows, possibly with an opening act as we were discussing here yesterday.

  70. Bianca, I understand your feelings and that’s courageous of you to admit your reluctance to say you like Danny because your friends and family might think it’s not cool.

But I don’t allow others to dictate to me what’s cool and what’s not. I’ve loved Danny from his audition because I always saw the potential there. He wasn’t perfect back then. Having so little experience he made many mistakes that cost him the win–but to make it all the way to third place over thousands of others was pretty darned impressive. The raw talent was always there and it’s been a joy watching his growth as a performer over the past year and a half. He’s now polished, professional, and oozing with confidence (without ever being arrogant). He’s also a risk taker and doesn’t let setbacks stop him.

I think I know what it is that annoys people about Danny. I don’t think it’s his “goodness”–Kris is a “good boy” too but never got as much hate as Danny. I think Danny’s intensity and high energy level may be offputting to some people. He’s not easy going in the way Kris is. He’s intense and driven, very Type A, and has himself admitted he’s a perfectionist and very hard on himself. He may be a hard person to live with and also hard to keep up with. He talks fast, he’s constantly moving, he’s a whirlwind of energy. But it’s these qualities that might look like arrogance or be annoying to some that also make him the fantastic live performer he is, got him to the Top 3 with practically no experience, and are making him a success now, and will make him even more successful over time. I believe in Danny, and as he’s proven time and again, when he wants something he will find a way to make it happen. Mark my words—in a few years I think he will be a huge star. Danny’s a riveting, kinetic performer, and more than anyone else I’ve ever seen live, engages the audience so they feel like they’re not just watching a show but become a part of it. I was watching the video of Danny performing LOAP in Auburn, NY, and even on that Youtube video, I wanted to get up and dance and sing along.

It makes perfect sense to me that Danny does not perform with an instrument. I don’t think it’s so much that he can’t, but I think an instrument would limit him physically and turn him inward too much. Danny’s a performer who needs to be constantly moving, running, jumping, turning every performance into an aerobic workout–and it certainly shows!

  71. i agree with negativo’s comment, i really want to like danny but he’s too preachy for me. i also don’t believe that he was the douche guy they portrayed him in AI, but he seems ignorant or sheltered, and so full of himself, im sorry for the terms but those are the closest words i can think of in describing him. i’m sorry to compare but inspite of him having his own foundation he does not radiates the same aura of goodness and kindness that kris have.

  72. i’m sorry to compare but inspite of him having his own foundation he does not radiates the same aura of goodness and kindness that kris have.

I would guess you have paid a lot of attention to Kris and care about him and so you value the qualities that are special to you and when you look at him you think of those. The exact same thing is true of fans who care about Danny. I wish Kris well but he doesn’t “radiate” anything to me – but I have no doubt he does to you and that’s great. When I look at Danny I see goodness and kindness because he has a long established track record of behaving that way, which I have seen for myself because I pay close attention to him. If you followed him closely I am very confident you would see that he is not ignorant, sheltered or full of himself. You’d see a guy who likes to joke around and is affectionate and warm toward people. It’s ok that you don’t care enough about him to follow him closely, my point is that if you did I believe you would see things differently, just as if I followed Kris closely he might “radiate” for me too. ;)

That’s the way I see it too. I have no doubt Kris is a good guy. I don’t follow him closely, but I don’t get any special vibes of “goodness” from him nor do I think Danny is less “good” than Kris. I too don’t get much of anything from Kris. I find him quite bland and uninteresting, but of course your mileage may vary on that. I have met Danny several times, and he makes you feel like you’re the only person in the world when he’s focused on you. Many others who have met him say the same thing.

Arwen, I don’t think Danny is at all “full of himself.” He is extroverted, intense and emotional, but is very giving of himself and is probably the friendliest idol I’ve ever met. He never gripes about having to pose in photo after photo, or sign hundreds of autographs when he probably wants nothing more than to go back inside his bus and take a nap. Yet he always accommodates his fans and does so with a smile, no matter how tired he is. As hard as Danny works, he has every right to be cranky sometimes, but he never is. He also never refuses to meet his fans and make them feel special. To me, Danny radiates goodness and joy whether he’s performing or not. He loves his life and he loves his fans, and wants nothing more than for everyone to share his joy with him. I don’t see him doing much “preaching” either.

  74. Wow! I didn’t realize there was so much interest in Danny! People still commenting even after the thread is off the page, lol.

I have met Danny many times and yes, he is just as you described :)

He has sat and autographed for 1000 fans with a smile (at two different concerts I was at). Everyone who meets him says how nice and how down to earth he is. Even Jamba Jim who snarks on everyone and loves to make fun of Danny has publicly stated on MJs blog how genuine and nice and non – arrogant Danny is. And if nothing else, Jim Cantiello pulls no punches.

Never heard Danny preach since his AI run; that’s all I can say about that!

I met Kris once at one of the AI tours I was at (he didn’t come out for the other) and he seemed nice. Didn’t get an aura of “goodness” off him, but I know he does a lot for charity like Danny does. Kudos to him.

I am proud to be a Danny fan and follow such a great guy; not embarrassed to proclaim that.
