Despacito continues to top the Hot 100 for a 7th week. Rihanna is featured on DJ Khaled’s new song which debuts in the top 5 breaking a 12-week period in which no woman has been in the top 5 of the Hot 100 (last woman in the Top 5 was Taylor Swift with her Zayn collaboration). There hasn’t been a gap this big in 35 years for a solo female and 45 years since they have been entirely absent (in that break in 1982, bands featuring female singers did chart in the top 5 – The Human League and Fleetwood Mac). The song that broke through in 1972? Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman”.
