Crystal has said in interviews that Jewell was a big influence on her early on, and she wasn’t kidding. Check out the video and you’ll see what I mean.

What’s cool about the young Crystal is that she is still very much a kid, but her calm demeanor belies a very old soul.  She seems centered and mature, even as a young teen.

Did you watch? What do you think?

  1. Beautiful. I love how she messes up and just shrugs it off with a smile. I would have crumpled into a pool of tears at that point lol. I think there is a greater sense of pain and sorrow in her back then, but on the show she seems to be at a much better place emotionally.

  2. Would never have guessed she was only 13. She must had seen a lot of hard stuff even at that age :(

  3. She’s very poised. An extremely mature 13 year old. He talent was evident back then as well. She is doing what she was born to do. She’s just amazing.

  4. Wow. To think she’s not even the favorite to win anymore :(.

She was so great at 13, and she’s still totally awesome.

  5. By that age, she’d been diagnosed diabetic 6 years earlier, and probably from her background had already been through way too much as far as her mom. I don’t know what else lies in her past, and I may not want to know – but she had plenty more hard times to go through between then and now too.

If you haven’t heard it, I’m still trying to figure out “Just Want To Love Ya Before I Leave.” I wonder when she wrote it…and I wonder just how literal it is. The lyrics actually downright scare me in a way. I’m hoping Crystal doesn’t know already that she’s not going to be around for long and part of the person we see now being in a better place emotionally is that she’s figured out how to cope.

  6. Aw, that was so sweet. A lovely child with a lovely voice. I’m voting for her in the finale. Her backstory is sad (to me), and I want to see her realize her dreams. And her voice and musicianship is as good, if not better, than any of the other top tier finalists. Crystal ftw.

  7. I’m copying a part of my comment I made a little earlier this evening (in the Coin Toss topic) about my hearing Crystal sing in this video tonight. (Thanks MJ)

“I’ve really starting to believe she’s someone really special and rare — a true artist. This is jmo, but Idol may not be the best vehicle (being an entertainment show) for someone as real as Crystal to be fully able to show her true talent, but I don’t care now even if she doesn’t win — she’s touched my heart, and I will now be able to hear more of her own original music in the future. For that, I am grateful for AI.

Of course, I’m STILL going to vote my butt off next week LOL!! Just in case she can somehow snatch the title from the voting teens and the TPTB. :) I wish I had posted about this video earlier in the evening, so more posters would see it. I’m on West Coast time, but I bet most are asleep now. . .”

  8. My thoughts…the song was mainly 5 notes. Not hard. And I liked her looks and dress and everything about her as a 13 year old much better. Could she go back about 10 years and undo some of the messy things she is doing today?

  9. Just in case she can somehow snatch the title from the voting teens and the TPTB.

This voting teen is going to be voting her butt off for Crystal on Tuesday.

She is so sweet in that vid. I love how she just smiles and shrugs when she forgets the words. Totally adorable. The song is pretty heartbreaking though. I just love her voice.

Megz, please accept my apologies — it is never a good thing to over generalize! Looks like Crystal appreciated ‘old soul” music as a teen, too. Glad you’re voting!

Oh! No need to apologize. I wasn’t insulted or anything like that. I was just saying that you have at least one voting teen trying to help Crystal win the title! I’ll be voting as much as I possibly can.

  12. I believe this is an original song. For me, it’s not about the “notes” as much as it’s about the words and the feelings she conveys when singing them.

Exactly. And even if it is 5 notes (which, lol without going back and counting, there’s definitely more than that), you don’t need to use many notes to make something powerful.

  14. It feels like somehow we were able to peek to her past. Powerful lyrics.

  15. Did she write this? If so, that’s extremely impressive. Plus her voice was already beautiful.

  16. I watched this earlier, out on twitter, I think, and while the melody isn’t all that(for me), combined with the lyrics, and her lovely clear voice, it was a very nice performance. She had a sweet innocent face then, despite all her trials, whatever they may be. Beautiful then, beautiful now. I know I’ll be voting next Tuesday for as long as I can stand to. Crystal FTW!

  17. Wow!!! What a video! She’s got the voice of an angel! I’m truly impressed! I don’t know nothing about her story. I feel compelled to check her out now! What a talent! Very impressive!

You know, I wish she would have come out more gentle on the show. Maybe it would have help her out more. I mean looking at this, you can’t but help think that she’s a very rare talent that is destined for greatness!

ETA: I discovered a fan website where there are 10 of her songs to listen to.

  18. I don’t really like Crystal’s voice or style on AI…she has this hardness and everything she sings sounds the same to me week after week, imo. But in this video, her voice is just beautiful for someone so young and I felt a connection that for me, is lacking in her AI performances.

  19. that was beautiful.

for the people saying that this song is only like 5 notes, that doesn’t matter because crystal has said in some interviews that she doesn’t have to sing songs to hit the glory notes because some songs don’t need them. sometimes songs are more about the lyrics and not so much about the notes…

  20. I wish she still had pretty hair, and no stud in her chin. Her talent is great. Those things just take away….

  21. Crystal was one to watch, even then. Her essence is pure and raw and genuine, whether 13 or 23. She is compelling to listen to– and watch. I love seeing videos like this. It shows us the music was always in her and she was born to sing. Good luck next week, Crystal.. but you’ve already made fans for a lifetime.

  22. I actually like the way her hair is now – I see nothing wrong with it. The stud in her chin does bug me visually, but when you listen to her, you don’t hear it at all. Just like you don’t hear her hair.

I’ve actually said before on here, I really think this is the side of Crystal that she really wants to show. The vast majority of her original songs are pretty much like this – some of them get more intense and may have a phrase or two of the sound she’s become known for on the show, but for the most part, that’s not the way she usually sings. She’s one of the rare sorts of artists that can put just as much intensity into quiet, subdued performances as all out ones – the problem is, quiet and subdued, even if done perfectly, does not play well on AI. I think she realized that very early on. And the reason she went to more subdued later in the competition – simple, as she’s said, she’s not going to compromise herself or the music for the sake of musical fireworks. As much as she says she admires Lee, I have to think a part of her was just sick at the overblown production of “Hallelujah.” Crystal probably 100% gets that song and knows it was totally out of line, what they did. And she’s probably also a confident enough (and stubborn enough) musician that, if given the chance to perform the same exact song this week in the final, she’d do it exactly how she feels it should be done. I guarantee there would not be a choir, orchestra, dramatic lighting, and everything else. And it’d probably lose her the competition too, but those who get her would totally be blown away by it. Those who don’t – well, it’s a shame. This girl has it, and has had it for a long time.

  23. Mozart,
Amen. I think she knows she’s now being considered an underdog b/c she has tried to stick with what she believes is good for the music or song. I wonder if she’ll try to adjust to the TV show for the finale or still continue to go her own way?

  24. To put it simply, if she does what I’d expect her to do – she’ll do whatever she feels is best for the music. She won’t sacrifice the meaning or style/interpretation of the song just to put herself in a better light. I’m actually very curious what song she’ll pick to reprise – Me and Bobby McGee? Or something like Give Me One Reason? Or…People Get Ready? I mean she could go so many different ways – and I really don’t know which way she’ll go. I’m anxious about the producer’s pick and what sort of dreck they’ll have for a coronation song too – although I’m hoping that when it comes to something brand new, she’s going to totally own it and make Lee sound like he’s reading a newspaper.

  25. Mozart,
I’m trying to detach a bit from the outcome. There can be so much producer manipulation (song choice, lighting, bells and whistles, excessive praise, etc.) re: who they do or don’t want to win — I don’t want to get myself too frustrated if they start to give Crystal an uneven playing field, esp. after they cast her as the defacto favorite until the past couple of weeks. I just want Crystal to feel like she’s done her best, and put something wonderful out, while knowing there are lots of factors outside her control.

  26. You know there is no shame in coming in second, it might even afford her more freedom than she would normally get as a winner. Success with out the 19Evil dog and pony show.

    Just a thought.

  27. You know idol – there may end up being choices in her performance they foist on her, to make a good TV show. I know she’ll try her hardest to do her & avoid that.

Personally, I want a recorded full version of As Long As I Can See The Light, so, I hope she reprises that number. Plus, I prefer they pick something from further back in the season.

Saw this vid right before bedtime last night – her age & that it’s an original song impressed me. It is too bad, idol always wants bombastic, rather than, beautiful.

  28. This made me cry. And I don’t cry easy. It doesn’t matter to me if Crystal or Lee wins, although I’d prefer a Crystal coronation. I know I’ve already won. I want to hear all of Crystal’s songs — the ones she has written in the past make me eager for the ones she’ll write in the future. Idol has been the vehicle to bring those to me. For that, I’m grateful to the show and will endure the cheese, the manipulation, the games, the idiotic remarks of the judges and all that goes with it. After all, it’s the music that is important. And I know she’ll do right by the music.

  29. I prefer As Long As I Can See the Light also. That’s one of her strong performances, plus the story of her singing that song after hospitalization is compelling.

  30. BTW, the fellow who originally shot this video and posted it on YouTube yesterday, just left a message/comment that he plans to post another video of Crystal this weekend. He said it was the second song she sang in this set. “Desperado.” Let’s look for that. :)

    More Young Crystal!

  31. absolutely beautiful.. i love her softer voice.. but i love her all out wailing one also :)

    13 wow!!

  32. to those who’ll vote for crystal next week, thank you in advance… i cannot vote, too bad… i’m not really a fan of hers, no emotional attachment at all, but i have this feeling that the crown should be defended for some reason, and give it to the rightful one… cause, i think all the past winners did deserve the crown and proved themselves, even taylor hicks.. didn’t not know season 5,watched it back on youtube.. but he was an entertainer even if he’s not a typical radio artist.

  33. I could listen to Crystal all day long and never tire of her voice. Lee is like watching paint dry (lol pun intended). I mean the paint could be a pretty color and paint on easily, but waiting on it to dry can sometimes take several hours. I just dont get his appeal and can not listen to his songs on my ipod in my ears.
Big Mike was put down for using the choir behind him on one of his songs (think it was him) and when Lee (please pimp me out yall) uses the choir it was amazing???
Casey was given a sleeper song from Kara and Randy then put down for it. As if he had a choice. ugh.
Its as if idol is ready to fold and is on purpose alienating the viewers.
I want Crystal to win. She has a good cause to work with (diabetes) and having lived with a father who suffered thru this disease until a diabetic coma took him from us…it is needed to treat and find something for every diabetic in the world.
She will give back more than she would ever take. As a winner she would benefit a great cause. Imagine seeing her live in concert too on her own (not with idol).
If every person who loves her .. votes a LOT for her…she will win

  34. I wish she still had pretty hair, and no stud in her chin. Her talent is great. Those things just take away….

It’s just not about the pretty for me. Imho, if Crystal had played this game to just win, she could have had this wrapped up weeks ago. She could have sung the familiar diva songs, she could have gotten rid of her dreds and done the Idol Barbie thing, but it’s not about that for her. Yes, she wants to win, she wants her music heard, but not at the expense of the music. In that respect I think she sorta reminds me of Adam, he could have sung the familiar songs, he could have butched it up, been more ‘normal’. But then he could never have been himself after the show was over. Same thing with Crystal, we are not going to be surprised by who she is after the show. Her outward appearance doesn’t hamper her talent for me. I think she is a beautiful women, stud, dreds and all.

As for this defeatist attitude. I am a bit worried. It’s as thought we are going to follow the script that the producers have written. Just because it seems that Lee’s coronation is a done deal, doesn’t make it so. I am gonna vote my ass off to make sure that she gets that shower of confetti. I haven’t picked the winner since season 5, but I am just as sure that she deserves it than anyone else this season.

The folks at VFTW suggest using this to vote:

International users can easily vote using a Magic Jack (if you buy one) or Globe7. For Globe7, simply go to their website and download the software. Globe7 is easy to use and has been confirmed to work on Idol last week and Dancing With the Stars this week. All you have to do is dial +1 (the US Country Code) and then the number 866-436-570x,

  36. Crystal has very somber eyes. If I had not been told who this singer was, I would have insisted she was Jewel.

  37. That was jaw-dropping amazing from a 13 year old girl. Unbelievable. Such a pure voice, and I agree, defintely an older soul beyond her young age.

She sounds just like Jewel, and she should have been discovered years ago!

  38. If this is who Crystal is…then that is the artist she should strive to be. If her enjoyment comes from sitting on a stool and strumming a guitar and being poignant that is who she is. It seems pretty one dimensional to me, as have the performances I have seen from her from season 9, but then I am more attracted to Artists who have an emotional range, can evoke a sense of humor, who express themselves with their eyes and smile and body language.

If Crystal isn’t, by nature, an extrovert when she sings then it isn’t something she can learn…it will only look fake and contrived. She is who she is and she will win or lose AI based on that and how that connects to the voters. The same if she gets the opportunity to record…either whe will connect or she won’t.

Personally, I think the IT factor is very important…but I love to be stimulated visually as well as by listening. And after seeing this vid…just don’t see that Crystal will ever command a visual stage even though she has a nice, laid back voice.

  39. Wow. Beautiful.

THIS IS the type of music she needs to do. I don’t know if the songs cleared/available to them on idol are just terrible…I started disliking Crystal’s voice on the show. I only liked a couple of her performances where her voice shined. The Anthem she sang during the 3 home visits last week sounded awful, so I’ve written her off. But THIS IS something I can really dig.

Crystal and Aaron sound better on their videos prior to AI than on the show, IMO. Maybe the themes take it away from who they really are?

  40. this is so beautiful!!! and she wrote that song at 13? ..Impressed!! I so want her to win next week

  41. Simply beautiful. What a wonderful soul. This would never play out on the finale. Remember Kris trying to do it with What’s Going On? only to get slammed by the judges, and the year before Cook’s tear jerking rendition of oooh, my brain’s not working this morning..anyway, that got slammed by Simon too.

  42. for the people saying that this song is only like 5 notes, that doesn’t matter because crystal has said in some interviews that she doesn’t have to sing songs to hit the glory notes because some songs don’t need them. sometimes songs are more about the lyrics and not so much about the notes…

Well, in fact, there are several notes in that song that are *higher* than the stuff many people so popularly hit as “glory notes” (for which I gather the main criteria are high pitch and loudness), she just sings them pretty rather than belting them out in glory-note fashion. … There are just as many notes in that song as in quite a few songs that have been sung on Idol as big glory-noters. When people act like something is a glory note, we tend to accept it as a glory note, even when it’s no more challenging a note than others are singing, I think….. I remember Bo seeming to figure this out somewhere in the course of the competition, and, suddenly, voila, he was singing glory notes without expanding his range in the slightest, getting thunderous, mid-song glory-note applause for them that he’d been missing out on before. It’s all in the way you play the game. heh.

I think Crystal would have been well served to play the game by mixing up this soft sweet singer side with her anthemic side more. Cook and Lambert style of game playing, I guess I might call it.

  43. Cook’s choice at Finale: The World I Know (one of my favorites from the show)

On Crystal’s current look: Love it – all. It is such a perfect expression of who she is, without shining it all up to fit in within socially acceptable norms.

On Crystal at 13: Beautiful. Her innate musical talent shows brightly here as does her understanding of the human experience. Wise soul, indeed.

On Crystal during AI: It’s a ride. She’s navigating new territory attempting to hold the female indie singer/songwriter identity without much interference. Very tricky dance there. And it shows just how talented and genuine a person she is that she’s gotten to the Finale holding her visions intact. Bravo, Crystal!

  44. Personally, I want a recorded full version of As Long As I Can See The Light, so, I hope she reprises that number

. Yes, I would love to see her reprise this one as well.

This video of her at thirteen is so sweet and beautiful and even a little heartwrenching to watch. As I watched, I didn’t even realize this was an original, wow!

I love this girl and want to see her succeed on her terms! I hope whichever record company she signs with realizes what they have in Crystal.

  45. She’s navigating new territory attempting to hold the female indie singer/songwriter identity without much interference. Very tricky dance there. And it shows just how talented and genuine a person she is that she’s gotten to the Finale holding her visions intact. Bravo, Crystal!

    Well said!

  46. Thanks for The World I Know.. Was on the tip of my tongue..I love re-watching that on you tube..

  47. This is heart-breakingly good. Crystal is decades old beyond her years, even as a young teen. I love this voice and we haven’t heard much of it on Idol. I hope she does a soft, tender song like this on finale night. She has more emotion in one verse the the Whiner has shown in all of his performances combined.

Wait! Am I just dreaming, or didn’t they both win in spite of the judges? LOL! Not saying this is the style she should go with, because idk, but anyway this just made me smile. :D

  49. eff what the judges think…….now I know why I fell for Crystal a few weeks back, she was speaking to me through her music just like my other favorites do!

In my book not everyone has that ability, hers comes naturally, not forced, oh my goodness thanks for posting MJ, It was absolutely beautiful and I just loved it!

  50. And after seeing this vid…just don’t see that Crystal will ever command a visual stage even though she has a nice, laid back voice.

This was ELEVEN years ago. How can you assume from seeing one video of Crystal sitting on a stage alone with her guitar, at THIRTEEN, that this is the only kind of performance she ever wants to do, and who she really is? She’s clearly grown a lot since then, and I think the bigger, People Get Ready type of performances are true to her as well. I like poignant, introspective Crystal, and think she sounds beautiful here, but from what she’s shown on Idol, that’s not the only thing she’s about. She has visually commanded the stage just fine, IMO.

  51. In the end, showing one’s real vision of who they are as an artist trumps everything. Even though David Cook was told by Simon that The World I Know was the wrong song for the evening, he was wrong. It was the perfect song for the evening and thankfully, Dave followed his gut on this and didn’t play the expected card. I can’t imagine a world without Dave’s beautiful version of this song in it. There are times of big tests like this – where you have to risk showing your uniqueness over giving people what they think they want to see. I think its the sign of a real artist or really any creative individual to take that leap – and I hope both Crystal and Lee really goes for it. Artistry FTW!

  52. Even though David Cook was told by Simon that The World I Know was the wrong song for the evening, he was wrong. It was the perfect song for the evening and thankfully, Dave followed his gut on this and didn’t play the expected card.

Kind of reminds me of some other memorable moments on the show over the years. For example, Elliott’s I Believe to My Soul performance in the final three. Everybody told him that was the “wrong song,” and, who knows? maybe it did deliver the knockout blow to his hopes, but when you look at the power of his performance on that one, it’s hard to say that he was wrong to pick a song that he really cared about and knew was in his wheelhouse.

I would bet that, looking back, there are considerably more genuine “moments” from the show that came from contestants picking songs and approaches that truly worked for them and meant something to them than there are great moments that somebody else tried to engineer for them….Whatever the voting outcome.

  53. This is beautiful. Crystal’s voice is absolutely lovely. This is the voice she uses in many of her original recordings.

Because the lyrics to this song are very much those of an old soul, it makes me wonder how old she was when she wrote “Just Want To Love You Before I Leave.” She might have been still in her teens and taken with thoughts of her own mortality due to her diabetes. I’m pretty sure MJ posted it before, but in case you haven’t heard it, check it out. It’s heartbreaking.

Just Want To Love You Before I Leave

  54. I would bet that, looking back, there are considerably more genuine “moments” from the show that came from contestants picking songs and approaches that truly worked for them and meant something to them than there are great moments that somebody else tried to engineer for them….

Agreed. For me, besides TWIK, Brooke’s Let It Be, Jason’s first Hallelujah (before they made that song into Idol’s new Against All Odds, ugh) were such un-manufactured moments… and to be fair, the judges are not ALWAYS blind to these genuine moments, since they did give those performances props.

  55. Okay, so I guess the judges initial reactions don’t matter as coolcricket points out, and I guess it’s better to go for the gut wrenching emotional stuff. Kris and David did win despite the negative reactions. One of the reasons the judges say this, I think is because the Nokia or wherever they have the finale is such a big venue. to see it live, the performer may seem to be swallowed up by the stage if they chose to sit and strum a guitar. But would come across much better on TV..

  56. “This was ELEVEN years ago. How can you assume from seeing one video of Crystal sitting on a stage alone with her guitar, at THIRTEEN, that this is the only kind of performance she ever wants to do, and who she really is?”

Agree. But, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with sitting on a stage alone with a guitar, either. I love huge performances and visual displays, but I also love James Taylor, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell. The difference between them and Crystal is that Crystal also rocks it out. She has this lovely voice, but she can belt it. Having seen her live, there’s no doubt in my mind she has the “it” factor.

But, I hardly expect everyone to love Crystal. Why should they? We all have different tastes in the kind of music we enjoy. What I think, though, is that Crystal will shine in her genre. Her recording voice is pretty incredible, and she sounds awesome on the radio.

  57. She’s really put on the miles in a decade. Crystal looks like an angel here. That song seems a bit generic but she sounds lovely. I still cannot believe that Idol has become a platform for this type of performer though.

I actually mentioned the same exact song last night sometime after hearing this. I was thinking the same thing – I really want to hope that she’s going to be around for a long long time to make a lot of music, and so that she can see her son grow up and everything.

  59. Just proves what I’ve thought all year – she is innately talented and a truely unique artist and individual. She deserves to win hands down over Lee. Last year almost broke my heart, but I will disown Idol this year if Crystal is not recognized.

  60. She has such a quiet confidence about her- even back then. What an old soul.

Just realized you pretty much said the same thing MJ, lol.

  61. I just flove this! Sounds so much like Jewel that it actually sounds like she’s imitating Jewel’s vocals. I guess that makes sense at age 13 – you haven’t yet developed your own style, so you copy that of someone who moves or interests you. Just part of the evolutionary process. And as children we are more attuned to sights and sounds and thus have an easier time mimicking what we hear. i.e. watch a kid vs an adult try to learn a foreign accent.

For a 13-year-old, that was fantastic. Thanks mj.

That was fantastic for any age…

  63. That was fantastic for any age…

exactly! We can see that she clearly has IT. what a beautiful voice!

  64. Views on the YouTube page of this video have gone from a couple hundred last night, to several thousand earlier this afternoon – to almost 50,000 as of now. Just amazing how something like this can spread – and the vast majority of the comments are very positive. I have to think this will only help her – and it’s great to see that because she deserves it. Another video to be posted this weekend??

  65. Mamasox has such beautiful vocal tones; I knew she can sing, but I am surprised to learn she has written over 100 songs. That is really a person who lives and breathes music.

  66. That was lovely, if a bit trite. I think she’s fabulous and I really, really hope she takes the prize this season. I can’t see how Lee could possibly deserve it over her.

It’s upwards of 114,000 now. I also think getting an embed from EWeekly and on the front page of the Yahoo Music Blog, helped. LOL!
Don, the fellow who posted Crystal’s first video, said he was going to put up another song Crystal sang that day: “Desperado.”:) He mentioned that he’s only plans to keep the “Sometimes” video up for short time. Looks like he only decided to post it now so as to help Crystal get votes. I don’t mind this at all — however, I will be very sad if that video does go away soon.

  68. Andrew Sullivan has also linked to the YouTube of this on his Daily Dish blog. He is a very popular blogger and seems to really like Crystal a lot. He also posted her “Baby I’m Amazed” performance the other day. (As a funny aside, Andrew is gay and has never once mentioned Adam on his blog. But, Andrew is a “bear”, which Adam definitely is not.

I will try to put the link to the Daily Dish post below: (let’s see if this works)
