Carrie Underwood may have lost the Female Vocalist of the Year to Taylor Swift at the CMA 2009 Awards tonight, but when Carrie took the stage to sing “Cowboy Casanova” she showed young Taylor exactly how it’s done.

Plus Chris Daughtry and his band joined Vince Gill on the CMA stage to perform a lovely “Tennessee Line”. And, I’ve got Carrie and Brad Paisley’s opening monologue and the newly red-headed Kellie Pickler presenting the CMA award for Song of the Year to Jamey Johnson

  1. It’s okay Carrie. We all know that YOU are the true Female Vocalist of the Year.

  2. I’m frightened that I actually got the jokes in the monologue.

I’m really liking Cowboy Casanova, but Carries voice wasn’t strong in her lower register. She sounded, and kinda looked, a bit out of breath at the end too. I hope she’s not sick. She’s normally such a solid performer.

Vince Gill in glasses! He used to be so vain. lol.

    Can’t wait to see Kellie!

ETA: OMG! I love it! hee…and she couldn’t open the envelope. Love her!

  3. Thanks for the vids, MJ. The Brad/Carrie banter in the first one was painful. Not sure about Cowboy Cassanova performance, either. How many times is her stylist going to put her in the same outfit?

Kellie looks great with red hair! I’m glad she injected one phrase of personality into this event.

  4. Man- talk about incredible. Taylor Swift at 19 winning all those awards. She seems so nice and she is an excellent commercial songwriter but she cannot carry a tune. She would be doomed without autotune.

  5. I loved the “Tennessee Line” performance . I didn’t like
“Cowboy Casanova”. It works in the music video but in a live performance I don’t care for the Britney/Madonna type of show with all the dancers.

  6. Also, was Daughtry supposed to do a duet with Vince? That seemed uncomfy…

It was all about Daughtry. No respect. Gah.

  7. I thought Brad and Carrie were kind of cute together. The funniest part was when they were teasing the Brooks & Dunn guys about their “divorce”, and they put the camera on one of those guys who looked pissed and you could see him say “I didn’t like that”. Oops!

  8. So true MJ, Carrie did show her how its done. Taylors performance was all over the place

  9. At least Taylor doesn’t lip sync. She never tries to be or pretends to be anything more than she is. That’s why I just can’t hate on her.

  10. I really liked the “Tennessee Line” performance. I have a big ol’ soft spot for Vince Gill, right out of college I fell in love with a Tim McGraw song when my friend played it for me and started listening to country and Vince Gill’s CD was the first one I bought and still love it (I want to say it is When Love Finds You). Love his voice.

And Kellie is too cute… I am kinda liking the red hair! Carrie did seem a little breathy on her performance but I’d imagine between hosting and what was a lot of dancing for her :) she was probably a little tuckered out! She looks amazing… my husband came wandering by and watched the video and liked it, heh. What I wouldn’t do for legs like that… you go, girl!

  11. Love you Carrie! You’re still the FVOTY for me! Next year will be your year again.

Loved Daughtry’s performance! That song is so beautiful! Their voices blended so well. Vince can be a bit of a snob but tonight he looked like a lovable Teddy Bear.

  12. When Love Finds You

I like that album too. Also on it is “Which Bridge to Cross”, which is pretty old school country, but I like that sometimes (reminds me of being a kid, Mom and Dad loved it). That album also has “Go Up High On That Mountain”, which is heartbreakingly sad but very beautiful. I said on the other CMA thread that this show reminded me of how much I used to like Vince Gill, I ought to see what he has been up to lately besides the Daughtry thing. Which by the way I thought was very good – the LA Times blog gave it a D. Taylor got a bad grade for her first song but an A for the second.

  13. Daughtry and Vince Gill were great (which I figured they would be), as were Kenny and DM, love me some Dave Mathews!

I think Taylor is a wonderful person, but she could take some lessons from Reba, and Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland) about how to sing live. Miranda Lambert looked like she wanted to claw someones (Taylor’s?) eyes out.

  14. I love Chris Daughtry’s voice – lovely duet. And I love Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland – strong rich voice.

  15. TL is not really a duet. Vince sang more in the live performance than on the recording.

  16. Because I Adore this girl I cannot ,not, just say “”Hurrah”for Taylor. Still, I am pleased for for her despite the fact there are other technically better singers, but, she is a very good performer…so YaaaaY!!!
Nevertheless, I can not help but give the hapless Kanye some credit for
her overwhelming success tonight despite his pompus, and, overbearing ego. He sure did pick the wrong person to DISS!!!
Our Carrie looked so beautifultonight and she seems to be well on her wayto another hugely sucessful Album. As Simon predicted, this Idol
looks like she has the career of, and, for a lifetime.

I also admire Jennifer Nettles of “Sugarland. She sings incredible stories.
Did anyone else wonder what the marks were on the out side and inside of her right arm just above the elbow. Really looked like bruises.
I saw these while she was singing and when she accepted the award for best duo. All of a sudden the words of her song took on a slightly
altered feel. I hope I’m wrong. I hope I just had spots in front of my eyes!!! She looks like, and, sounds like such a Stong Woman!!!

  17. It didn’t look like Carrie was really singing in this clip. When they hold the mic that close to their mouths, it’s a good bet they don’t want us to see there’e nothing really coming out when they were mouthing the words.

  18. “Did anyone else wonder what the marks were on the out side and inside of her right arm just above the elbow. Really looked like bruises.”

re:Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland…. That is a birthmark on her right upper arm. They literally look like finger prints or thumbprints. In videos and most red carpets they cover it with makeup, but you can see it in live performances like this one. Jennifer is one of my favorite female voices in country music!! Performance of “Keep You” was STELLAR. U should all see them live! WOW.

And BlankSlate, I can ASSURE you Carrie was singing live. I would say she was about 98% spot on as far as technical spots. She seemed to lose the chorus toward the end for about 4 seconds. Breath control I guess, alas -they couldn’t possibly fit more words into that chorus. So she does a pretty damn good job with it. How many live perf. has she done in the past 8 days…..?!?!
And I loved the opening bit – my entire household enjoyed it as well, from Kanye’s joke, George Strait + 8, Brooks and Dunn….My fave was the shot at Tim McGraw for his cologne. Robin Roberts also got him on Tues. nights’ ABC special for winning 2 FeFe awards (for his commercial scent, of course.) Faith Hill’s guffaw was priceless. :)

  19. Thankyou mandabutter, I feel much better for that little fact.
I will be giving Sugarland to my partner who also loves her voice.
Country does have some very good performers. I haven’t seen them live but I did catch their concert on TV recently and fell head over heels for her beautiful vocals and their fabulous harmony!!!!!

  20. Congratulations to Taylor Swift, she deserves it, she had an incredible year, and Kanye had nothing to do with it. She might not have the best range but she made it work and it was her year. Taylor doesn’t hide behind lipsyncing or backup singers. Carrie doesn’t have to win everything every year, she’s great and will continue to be great, but congrats to Taylor too. Women power! :)

Kellie looks elegant with red hair, her natural color is brown and not blonde, she looked classy last night. And I loved the Daughtry/Gil duet.

  21. What I love about the CMAs are the performances, which are LIVE and most of the time the singers play instruments. I love Carrie but honestly do not care for CC and the dancers. IMHO Daughtry and Gill were one of the more “country” performances of the night. Thought their duet was much better than the Chesney/Matthews, which got a standing O(???) Very happy for Taylor Swift because she is a fantastic songwriter and such a naturally beautiful young girl, but she’s not a great singer. It was cute the way the teens were singing along with “Fifteen”. Really liked Carrie and Brad Paisley as hosts, too — they sounded great together. I almost started sobbing at the commercial for the movie Blindside (very good move at placing it in the middle of these awards, with Tim McGraw and all); it is uncanny how much the cast resembles the real people. Cannot wait to see it.

  22. Wow. Carrie was great! And overall it looked like a really fun awards show. Seeing these clips makes me sad all over again that KrisA didn’t go country. Daughtry was great with Vince Gill. Wish I’d tuned in. I’ll definitely have to watch next year. Thanks for the recap and the clips, MJ!

  23. Yay for Taylor…..she’s actually growing on me as a songwriter and a performer. Nope, she can’t sing worth a damn, but she’s definitely got something that even has this mom singing along and getting it. I feel more heart from her that I ever felt from Carrie. Don’t know if it’s because she sings her own stuff or whatever, she just feels genuine. I like that. Actually thinking of buying that damn cd!

Looking at the picture you used for Daughtry makes me remember why he was affectionately know as PWE!

I love Picker, need I say more?

  25. abbysee
Do you follow Taylor(Hicks that is) anymore or did you jump off the bandwagon?

  26. It’s surprising that Carrie lost to Taylor. But she has won so many awards she’s quickly moved to somewhat ‘Grande Dame’ status in Country Music – without the ‘age’ aspect, of course.

Pulling in the youth market is wise for country music.

I enjoyed the opening ‘dialogue’ :) I didn’t get the Brooks & Dunn joke, so I had to look it up. Must feel like the Simon & Garfunkle breakup to their fans.

‘Tennessee Line’ was lovely. Chris Daughtry has such a beautiful and full voice. Kellie looked great and I like the auburn hair on her. She looked very old Hollywood elegance.

I didn’t find Carrie breathy at all. But with fast costume changes and a very physical performance, she’s allowed if she was. As far as lip syncing, while watching her I had exactly the thought, ‘It’s amazing how this girl always sings live and always sounds great.’ She wasn’t lip syncing.

  27. Carrie definitely did show her how it is done. That’s the TRUE Female Vocalist of the Year right there. Once Taylor can hit half the notes that Carrie can, maybe then she’ll be the Female Vocalist of the year. It’s okay, Carrie should have won but she’ll come back harder next year to reclaim what is hers.

  28. Hicksaholic, I am still a fan of Taylor (Hicks that is). I still think he’s an incredibly talented guy, and cute too! LOL! If I like someone I don’t abandon them just because they don’t sell a bunch of records. I still think he is one of the best performers to come off of idol.

  29. Once Taylor can hit half the notes that Carrie can, maybe then she’ll be the Female Vocalist of the year. It’s okay, Carrie should have won but she’ll come back harder next year to reclaim what is hers.

Quite possible, but there just may be another it girl coming down the pike, I mean who knew Taylor would be such a force, and it’s Taylor’s honor now. Carrie was in the exact spot a couple of years ago, and not everyone thought she should win.

  30. I now get why people like kanye get pissed. they are not really using vocals to judge but instead they use sales. Taylor has nothing on Carrie in that dept. doubt she wld have made top 5 on idol with that singing. but she’s cleaning out here. so sales is everything.

personally i think best vocalist shld be the best for real. the other awards like best album, best song, record of the year etc can go to highest seller.

  31. That opening monologue is why Carrie and Brad need to record a duets album. Well it’s one of the many reasons. They sound amazing together and the little parodies were really funny! I’d love to get the Swine Flu one again too, Carrie killed on that one. She’s so great on the traditional country songs.

Carrie’s not a dancer and so I’d have liked Cowboy Casanova better if she hadn’t been stuck with choreography. But she sounded great and the performances last night by her, Reba, Martina, and Miranda really spoke for themselves in terms of showing how absurd it was for Taylor Swift to win a vocalist award. Miranda looked pretty pissed off when Taylor won.

Great job by Carrie hosting and performing. Daughtry did a really good job too though I wish there’d been more of Vince. I’m going to pick up Tennessee Line on i-Tunes.

Ann Powers did a good write up giving Carrie some love:

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2009/11/taylor-swift-young-fearless-and-in-control.html

Swift started things out with a version of “Forever and Always” that was glitzy and high-concept — and off-tune, a consistent characteristic of Swift’s live outings that gave the lie to her one undeserved triumph, for best female vocalist. The prize should have gone to Carrie Underwood, country’s most powerful young singer and the evening’s co-host with Brad Paisley.

Underwood apparently borrowed a cut-away gown and some dance moves from Katy Perry for a version of “Cowboy Casanova” that reminded us this quintessential country bombshell is a genre-buster too.

LOL @ the Katy Perry comment. I don’t get that outfit but it was pretty hot.

Agree, oceana! And if you’ve ever seen Taylor LIVE you would totally understand why she deserves these awards, especially Entertainer of the Year. Her show is amazing!

  33. This is the first time I’ve ever watched the CMAs, it was a good show! Taylor Swift is not a good live performer at all, she wouldn’t have made it past Hollywood week on AI haha. I just don’t get the hype on her at all.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED Tennesse Line!! Chris’ voice sounded awesome and it’s probably the only time the song will be performed live with Vince so that was very cool to see!!

  34. I’ve found it interesting how so many are fawning all over Carrie. I still feel her voice lacks dimension and warmth. I think people are drawn to her because she’s a pretty woman who likes to sing kick-ass songs and play dress-up. I listened to the CC video, and she was dropping the last part of many of her lines. Don’t know if it was a breath control issue or what.

  35. thanks for the video, MJ. I’d never have watched this show, but I really enjoy seeing the bits.

Daughtry and Vince Gill were great. I really loved Tennessee Line. whoever had the idea to match these two and sneak Daughtry into country’s backdoor is a genius.

I guess Kellie Pickler got tired of being mistaken for Carrie Underwood, eh? I don’t like her new hair very much. I wonder which color is closer to her natural color?

Cowboy Casanova dancers? With that lounge and those gals, where is that production number set? An 1880s brothel?

Taylor Swift is the smartest person on earth. She’s pop. She’s country. She’s a playful teenager. She’s a beautiful adult woman. Her songs and her performances have something for everyone.

  36. I’ve found it interesting how so many are fawning all over Carrie. I still feel her voice lacks dimension and warmth. I think people are drawn to her because she’s a pretty woman who likes to sing kick-ass songs and play dress-up.

I’m not a fan either, for all the reasons you say. But people like the glamour and glitz. Prediction: just like Celine Dion now, Carrie Underwood will have a Las Vegas show in 10 years.

  37. Carrie definitely did show her how it is done. That’s the TRUE Female Vocalist of the Year right there. Once Taylor can hit half the notes that Carrie can, maybe then she’ll be the Female Vocalist of the year. It’s okay, Carrie should have won but she’ll come back harder next year to reclaim what is hers

Actually Jennifer Nettles showed them ALL how it’s done. No fancy tricks or dancers.. just her, her amazing voice and a heartwrenching song. It’s a shame she can’t win FVOTY because she total deserves it IMO.

As for Taylor needing to sing better to win FVOTY, well those who voted disagreed and they also felt she deserved ETOY and unlike Carrie’s ETOY this was voted on by the industry not the fans so it wasn’t a popularity contest or a vote spam.

I see people saying the CMA are crap awards… were they crap awards when Carrie won? and will they stop being crap awards if she wins again? People need to suck it up and just accept that Taylor has MILLIONS of fans and is currently the hottest girl in country music.

  38. Carrie U showing Taylor S; how it is done-I agree with that point Taylor certianly can write a song… Carrie Underrwood sort of is country or Country/pop depending on the song.Deep down thier is a inner pop diva who knows ?
I did not watch the show CSI crossover was on..I did catch Reba and dissapointed I missed Sugarland. Were they good? I liked Daughtry and Kelly P hair.. I know Taylor S is hot like Carriu just I prefer old country style..like Reba and the above mentioned. I am not fond of voted on by fans only for an award, whom AI fans are great at, indusrty I prefer eventhough it has flaws too(politics, hear the song, connections, pop)

  39. Carrie’s ETOY this was voted on by the industry not the fans

FYI: Although there was a fan component to the voting, the ACM EOTY was industry-voted AND fan-voted, not exclusively fan-voted. That’s why last year @ the ACMs Rascal Flatts didn’t win it despite having a much larger online fanbase than the winner Kenny Chesney.

  40. Thanks for the video’s mj. Carrie had her turn and people said WTF! Now it’s Taylor’s turn to pull in the awards. Did not like Daughtry’s song — boring and no depth to it. Kellie – what did you do to your face? Looks like she’s had some work done.

  41. whoever had the idea to match these two and sneak Daughtry into country’s backdoor is a genius.

    Yep.

  42. Daughtry and Vince Gill were great. I really loved Tennessee Line. whoever had the idea to match these two and sneak Daughtry into country’s backdoor is a genius.

It was actually Richard Marx that hooked them up, the first time Chris and Vince met in person was a few days ago for soundcheck! Chris was writing a song with Richard and had him listen to Tennessee Line (which is written by Chris and guitarist Brian Craddock) and he was the one that said Vince would be amazing on the song and started the phone tag ball rolling!

  43. Taylor cant sing, cant sing, cant sing – I am not even a mad Carrie fan, not at all. Taylor Swift is just a country fied version of a Miley Cyrus and Ugh – all the ladies there can sing better than her!

    Loved DAughtry and Vince Gill

“”Reba, Martina, and Miranda really spoke for themselves in terms of showing how absurd it was for Taylor Swift to win a vocalist award. Miranda looked pretty pissed off when Taylor won.””

This ^^^ exactly – Milor or should I say Tayly should have never gotten that award over any of them – they blew her away, Taylor is so uncomfortable to watch, her movements are akward and her voice is worse but she does write some nice songs –

  44. Taylor Swift is the best vocalist, Barack Obama and Yaser Arafat are Nobel Peace Prize winners.

    SHOOT ME NOW.

If I ever have grandkids, I can now tell them I’ve seen everything.

  45. I am not surprised at all.

Taylor Swift sold 10 million albums and 20 million paid downloads in just 3 years. She can’t sing without auto-tuning but her videos are very entertaining and a delight to watch. This accomplishment deserves recognition.

    .

  46. Wow – first time for me that I realize how good a singer Chris Daughtry is !

Did VG duet with him on TL on his album? Doesn’t tell this info on iTunes that I can find anyway.

  47. Did VG duet with him on TL on his album? Doesn’t tell this info on iTunes that I can find anyway.

Yup! Vince provided harmonies and back up vocals at the studio/album version of Tennessee Line. It’s beautiful.

  48. I can understand Taylor getting the Album of the year and Entertainer of the year awards. The album has sold millions and people love her concerts and other performances. She is very talented in many areas but her singing is weak especially compared to most of the other female country singers. She deserved the other awards but not female vocalist.

  49. I think Taylor is miles better than Miley and i think she did well enough on the song. She may not be able to do all the vocal gymnastics Carrie does but I think they considered the immense achievements Taylor’s album did–not only has it sold so many copies but it has achieved cross-over popularity….and all this from a teenager who writes most of her songs. And I think her songs are quite good…it’s not pretentious, they give out that innocent and yearning quality(without being too bubblegum-y) very appropriate for the teenager.

And I’m not even a Taylor fan.

  50. Next thing you know Britney is winning a “best vocalist in live concerts” award.

This is not about Carrie, it’s about music. And it’s an insult to give the award of best female vocalist to Taylor when there are country female singers who can actually sing on pitch and have great voices. It’s absurd.

  51. And may I ask, what the hell has the beautiful Nicole Kidman done to her face?

And the opening monologue was awesome. Makes me look forward to Carrie’s Christmas special even more.

  52. Loved Tenneesee Line. Wow Daughtrey writing with Richard Marx. Love to hear Richard, Chris and Vince Gill on a record. All fabulous voices. Wait a minute wasn’t it just a couple years ago when Carrie one that the big flack was about Faith Hill saying something about she not deserving it. It’s Taylor’s debutant ball folks. How many country artist have crossed over and even did SNL? Yes not the best singers, but Britney is not a great singer but who can deny her performance skills. It’s not that deep folks.

  53. Thank you so much for posting these videos! LOVED Tennessee Line!

It’s one of my favorite tracks on Daughtry’s new album, but it’s such a delicate song and there is no place to hide vocally (and the harmonies have to be pitch perfect to make it work) so I was fantastically pleased at how beautifully Daughtry and Vince pulled it off live. Absolutely beautiful :)

I liked how Vince got to sing a verse (on the album Daughtry sings lead through the whole song and Vince is the harmony all the way through). Brilliant stuff, and I am so glad to see this song showcased in a public forum (it deserves to be a single and is sure to be a hit).

I had never seen Carrie perform Cowboy Cassanova before and I was a little surprised. Her voice sounded fantastic, the song was pretty good, but all the dancers? Seemed like there were too too many of them and the choreography was a little distracting. I know it was supposed to be a big production, and it was impressive for that too, don’t get me wrong. But it left me a little confused. It seemed more like something one of the pop divas would do (Britney or Beyonce or Paula Abdul from the 80’s), I didn’t think it jived well with the country scene. But then again I’m no avvid fan of country, it was just a confusing to see. Either way she sounded great, there’s a reason she won Idol; the girl can really really sing.

As for Taylor winning when she can’t really sing… er well who cares? No one gets too upset at when this happens in other genres. Her album is selling, and people like her. I don’t personally get it, but again, no biggie.

  54. Regardless what good qualities Taylor Swift has, being a good singer is not one of them. Like Wyonna Judd said, she much too young and new in the business. What does she now have to look foward to? It was FOOLISH for the CMA to even nominate her. She hasn’t become a good entertainer, yet.

Now, Carrie – that lady can sing!

  55. Taylor Swift is the worst live vocalist I have ever heard, in any genre of music. Even Miley Cyrus is better, and that ain’t saying much.

The CMAS should be ashamed of themselves for awarding her anything remotely to do with live vocals.

Swifty can have albumand video, but EOTY and Female Vocalist were a farce.

Kanye West did this. This whole Pooooooor Taylor thing is getting old.She is milking it for all it’s worth like a greedy opportunist. I feel sorry for Kanye actually. He told the truth and he is now the bad guy…but he was right. She didn’t deserve that VMA either.

  56. Carrie’s performance showed Taylor what a real vocalist and performer can do.

Great job hosting too, and Brad rocked!

I enjoyed Daughtry’s performance as well.

So sick of everything about Taylor Swift. She is the most over-rated, over-exposed, “artist” in the business. The only thing she is brilliant at is self-promotion. Unreal.

  57. Swifty can have albumand video, but EOTY and Female Vocalist were a farce.

Kanye West did this. This whole Pooooooor Taylor thing is getting old.She is milking it for all it’s worth like a greedy opportunist. I feel sorry for Kanye actually. He told the truth and he is now the bad guy’ ¦but he was right. She didn’t deserve that VMA either.

Entertainer of the Year is about who entertains people. Taylor entertains people as shown by her sky high record sales; therefore she deserves the award.

As for her being a “greedy opportunist,” I would like to ask how could she act in order for you to not think that? It seems to me like she’s accepting her awards and accolades with excitement and gratefulness. Should she refuse them and say, “No, I don’t think I deserve this, you can have it back, Kanye was right”?

And lol, the VMAs are not serious business. It’s not like Beyonce deserved it any more than Taylor. Her video was just her and two backup dancers, dancing.

  58. Tennessee Line is just as good on a 2nd listen. I didn’t know that Vince sang backup on the studio version. I’m going to have to listen for it.

Wasn’t Wynonna involved in some criticism about Carrie a few years ago? Something about her being like white bread or something. I happened to agree with her at the time but like Carrie more now. I don’t see where Carrie is so much more deserving than Taylor. Both are or have been it girls and very popular. I think it’s a matter of taste more than anything.

  59. I said this over on MJ’s other thread about the CMAs, but I’ll repeat it here:

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Taylor Swift’s singing ‘“ I think it’s all the different microphones she uses that are out of tune!!”
