Cassadee Pope To Release New Single To Country Radio – Preview with Lyrics & Video!

This week, Voice Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope is set to hit #1 on the country airplay charts for the first time via her Chris Young duet, “Think of You.” It’s a nice and fortuitous recovery (that has Big Machine Label Group head Scott Borchetta crowing) after Cassadee followed her debut post-Voice single “Wasting All These Tears”‘ platinum success and t10 airplay peak with two solo singles peaked at #35 and #52 respectively on the Billboard Country Airplay charts. So like any sensible label, Republic Nashville is making plans to harness “Think of You”‘s success into a push for a new Cassadee solo single at country radio, which continues to be a challenging environment for female artists despite breakthroughs in the past year by Kelsea Ballerini, Cam and Maren Morris. Recently, Republic Nashville tested four songs as potential singles, and we have the full lyrics of those songs for you here!

Of the four songs, “Alien” is the lone carryover from a new music test that Republic Nashville conducted last year. It’s a song that Cassadee cowrote with hitmakers Ross Copperman and Jon Nite, and it’s one of the two songs in the batch that Cassadee has been performing live during her opening sets on Chris Young’s current “I’m Comin’ Over” tour. All four songs are as poppy as you’d be expect from Cassadee and in an era where Sam Hunt is marketed to country radio. Speaking of Sam Hunt, it’s arguably his incorporation of light hip-hop textures that shows up in the “Sublime in the boombox (wooh!)” line of the “Summer” chorus, though the line also scans as a musical shoutout to Sublime to go along with the namecheck.

Check out lyrics and, where available, live video of Cassadee’s new songs. Which would you select as her next single?

“Alien” (Ross Copperman / Jon Nite / Cassadee Pope)

Lyrics
You can have a lot of friends and still feel alone
But there’s a lot of hands
Tryin’ to mold you
Cause they think they can
You’re a band geek, you’re popular
a broken heart or a heartbreaker
What do you do when you’re in between
How do you label a freak like me?

(chorus)
I’m a blackbird flyin in a white fence town
Got a church pew heart and a rock & roll mouth
I’m a straight-A kid with a fake ID
Little somewhere in between
I’m a dark horse running where you can’t run wild
Got a good girl soul with a fast lane smile
I’m a homecoming queen with a tattoo sleeve
A 501 blue dream
What’s the point of fittin’ in
‘Cause I know at some point I know we’ve all been
Alien

I’m an open book full of mysteries
With a runaway heart on a settle-down street
I’m an outsider just looking in
Not a 1 or a 2 or a perfect 10
I’m a wildflower growing through the concrete
Always somewhere I shouldn’t be

(chorus)

Do you ever feel like you were born
In the wrong place, in the wrong time
But there ain’t nothin wrong with living your life?

(chorus)

“Kisses in Airports” (a ballad with a soaring chorus but not a great deal of melodic variation within the verses and within the choruses)

Lyrics
You don’t know if it’s hello or goodbye
What kind of tears they are when they get cried
All you know is somebody is coming or leavin’
It don’t really matter whatever the reason
Something ’bout ’em gets me every time

(chorus)
Kisses in airports
Wide-open car doors
So slow to let go
Wrapped up with eyes closed
Some mean “I missed you”
Some mean “I’m going to”
But somehow they mean more
Kisses in airports

There was a Crayon cardboard “Welcome home, Daddy” sign
When he got the push deployed*, she was just two pink lines
And now it’s sunburned lips on 10 little fingers
And one for her mama, yeah that one lingers
I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one at baggage claim to cry

Kisses in airports
Thankin’ the good Lord
You didn’t die out there
Without seeing that curly red hair
And that’s why you hang on
And that’s how you make it home
Got something to live for
Kisses in airports

When you dropped me off
I was running late
I just grabbed my bags and ran to the gate
But what if I had never landed
How many times do we take for granted?

Like kisses in airports
Wide open car doors
No I don’t want to let go
I just want to make sure you know
This one means I miss you
This one means I’m going to
Make every one I give you mean a little more
Like kisses in airports
Like kisses in airports.

“Piano” (midtempo with an escalating sense of tension from the verses to the choruses)

Lyrics
I was fragile, I was nervous.
I was flawed and you were perfect
I was timid, you were fearless
I was in it, you could feel it

You were music, I was listening,
Not a beat that you were missing.
I got so caught up in the way you sound

You played me like a piano
You made it sound pretty stringing me along
I fell for every note
Guess I didn’t know it was a heartbreak song
I’m not a stupid girl
I should have known
I let you play me like a
Piano
Oh, you played me like a piano.

It would feel good for a minute
Just to scream but you won’t hear it
The truth is, this is my fault
All the big things started out small
All the sudden I had two hearts
One was so blind, one was too smart
And the weakest part of me wouldn’t let go
Oh

(chorus)

Thank you and I guess I’ll thank myself
Smart girls don’t let this kind of thing happen twice
I’ll never let anyone in.

(chorus)

“Summer”

Lyrics
Rolled in as wild and free as a Panama City at 17 memory
Eyes blue as a July sky
Sent shivers down my spine every time that he’d smile at me
The way he took off that white t-shirt
The way he looked walking out of that water
And it just got hotter and hotter

(chorus)
The tanline’s fading on my sun-kissed skin
It’s like a wave when I think about it
Sublime in the boombox (wooh!)
Our bare feet in the sand
Making out on the boardwalk
My heart on fire in his hands, yeah.
He drove away the first of September
But I remember
Yeah I remember
He talked like
And he walked like
And he looked like
And he burned like
Summer, summer
Ooh ooh
And he burned like
Summer, summer.
Ooh ooh.

His kiss was a sweet salt breeze
Had a hold on me like the moon pulls a tide
Took me up on the ferris wheel
And I swear it feels
Like I never came down from the high
I know he never said forever
But something about it felt like it would never
End

The tanline’s fading on my sun-kissed skin
It’s like a wave when I think about it
Sublime in the boombox (wooh!)
Our bare feet in the sand
Making out on the boardwalk
My heart on fire in his hands, yeah.
He drove away the first of September
But I remember
Yeah I remember
He talked like
And he walked like
And he looked like
And he burned like
Summer, summer
Bottle rocket sparks in the Florida sky
Summer, summer
Something that bright’s gotta burn out sometime.

(chorus)
Yeah
He burned like summer, summer
