Casey James Collaborates with Songwriter Jaren Johnston

Songwriter Jaren Johnston revealed via twitter today that he recently co-wrote with Season 9 Idol Casey James. Casey’s debut album is set to be released on Sony Nashville later this year.

BurnThisMedia has a video of Jaren’s Nashville rock band American Bang, which makes hard rock, Southern-style. Jaren is also the former drummer of the pop-punk band the Kicks.

Lately Jaren has been writing with country-pop group Gloriana and also with “Before He Cheats” cowriter Chris Tompkins (who also cowrote “Keep On Drivin'” with Katharine Mcphee and “Rocks Instead Of Rice” with Kellie Pickler, plus Chris Young’s current Top 5 hit “Voices”).

Some of the other artists Jaren has listed as recent collaborators are Rodney Clawson (who’s written hits for Jason Aldean, George Strait, Faith Hill, and Big & Rich), Bonnie Baker (who’s also writing with country acts like Katie Armiger and Brantley Gilbert), and Jennifer Hanson (who’s cowrote Bucky Covington’s debut single “A Different World”, the Wreckers’ biggest hit “Leave The Pieces, ” and Billy Currington’s current single (“Let Me Down Easy”).

Songwriter Aimee Mayo, who recently co-wrote with Casey tweeted, ” he’s a true artist–I’m obsessed with his guitar licks.”

  1. Very happy to see things are moving along for Casey. I think he stands a pretty good chance of making a success out of his Idol stint. Here’s hoping, anyway!

  2. oh mj. that pic of Casey is so dreamy. what i love about him is that he’s such a simple happy-go-lucky guy and this picture captures his essence. i am so excited to see how it all unfolds for him.

  3. This is one of the most exciting news I heard for months! When I listened to American Bang’s songs, I knew Casey is in a good place. Dayuuum can’t wait for CJB alb to drop.

  4. Casey seems to be getting in a lot of writing time with some experienced people. Just makes me more impatient for the single/CD to come out!

  5. COOL! I love Casey’s guitar licks too!

I did read today on another blog that BC is back in Ft. Worth and did not make the CJ Band. I so hope this is not true.

  6. Listened to Wild and Young by American Bang and am very pleased. If this is the way Casey goes, yippee!! I was slightly worried that he would start singing twangy songs about drinking and trucks. Not that I have anything against drinking and trucks, but…um… well, not my kind of music.

So this makes me SUPER excited. A bit of blues, a bit of rock, a bit of bluegrass… man oh man. I cannot WAIT for this CD.

  7. Okay. Just went and looked at the headlines and saw Crystal. I wonder if she’s thinking…damn…shoulda gone out at three.. would have had more time to co-write, would have had more time to figure out that country alt was where I should land… crap.

Those cowboy boats scream at me.

But then, I am currently drinking a glass of very good chardonnay. Lots of things scream at me when I do that.

  8. Yay – he’s done everything right so far; after seeing the AI9 concert, IMO he is definitely the most talented “newcomer” poised for success –

  9. This was posted at TWOP by Shari Geller who writes a blog called burnthismedia:

As you all know, Debra’s dad, Casey and Billy’s Papaw, is seriously ill with cancer. With Casey and Billy in Nashville, Debra had been shouldering the responsibility on her own while starting a new job. Around the holidays, Billy came back to Fort Worth and decided to stay to help his mom with his Papaw. Billy would love to be able to be in Nashville right now, but the timing isn’t right for him or for the family. He has not auditioned to be in the Casey James Band and is not focusing on that right now. When the time is right, he hopes to join his brother.

    Can I get a hallelujah??!

The moment Casey said he won’t do traditional country, I let out a big sigh of relief. We all know his roots – blues, country, rock. He just *cannot* limit himself to one. I was daydreaming earlier on, wishing Casey would put out something of “Kings of Leon” quality (not rip-off sound, mind you). I mean, KOL made it big first in Europe, AFAIK. If USA does not welcome CJB sound (sorry, this is a pessimistic *me* speaking), his band could at least hit it internationally. But I wish him very very well on US market, duh.

  11. OMGeeeeeee!!! This is very encouraging. I’d never heard of American Bang and I really like their sound. I’m very happy to read about the songwriters that Casey is collaborating with. I can’t wait to hear Casey’s music!

  12. Not familiar with American Bang, but iTunes includes them in their “Essential” compilation “Rising Stars: Rock.” They definitely have a “southern rock” vibe going, although they also sound very commercial to me.

I’m really hoping there is some variety on Casey’s album (roots, blues, bluegrass), but I’ve been wondering what his first single will be like. Will it be more standard “commercial country” or more southern rock? Have there been any leaks about the single or his management?

  13. Billy came back to Fort Worth and decided to stay to help his mom with his Papaw.

Now I see where Casey gets his class. This family is impressive.

  14. It is good to hear that Casey is co-writing with other Southern rock artists. Casey could produce a very interesting album if he mixes up all of his genres and influences. At one stage I was a bit worried that they would make Casey, record an album full of pop country ditties, but now I can see he seems to be doing his own thing.

but I’ve been wondering what his first single will be like. Will it be more standard “commercial country” or more southern rock?

That is a very good question, for a first single I can very well see them taking the safer more commercial route. Which is not a bad thing per say, as Casey does commercial country pretty well, for example when you think back to Don’t. I could see Casey having one or two of that type of song. However for Casey to have a whole album with that type of songs would be a waste of his talents.

But who knows the commercial country landscape has slowly been changing in the last two years, if Casey produces a good Southern rock song with a good hook they might use that as the first single. They are already taking a bit of a chance to give Casey so much time to work on his album. So they might as well go all the way and have a first single that is more Southern blues rock, and more representative of the band.

  15. Interesting about Billy being back in Texas I thought Casey already said that he would be in the band. But it is properly not really that important to have him there right now, they are properly using session players for the recording.

  16. Would be awesome if the album has a southern rock sound!

I’m sure Billy would love to be the bass player in Casey’s band,
but the timing is not right with their Papaw so ill.

  17. Can’t wait for Casey!!! Love the picture above.
It would be interesting to hear a Casey/Bucky collaboration.
