  1. so…does this mean they’re going to release a single each week until the release? I think they did that with Taylor Swift, and there is a 1 on the pic…hmmm I like it.

  2. Yep that’s exactly what Taylor Swift did – hope they’re not trying to mimic her marketing strategies coz that would just be too obvious. But I guess, since it worked marvelously for Taylor, you gotta do what you gotta do.

  3. This is a lovely song that Carrie sounds fantastic on does this girl do anything but hits. She has great songs that she either sings tender and soft and then is able to full on belt and play the sweet angel and hell raiser and is becoming bigger and bigger.

  4. i am drooling for this album… i need it in my life right now!!!

  5. Quite a number of other country artists have done the iTunes Countdown such as Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, and most recently, Toby Keith. There were a number of indications that Carrie would do one– the early taping of CMT Invitation Only with an audience where she performed “Cowboy Casanova” plus three other album tracks; Walmart Soundcheck going live on October 15 where people will also hear new album songs; and the Billboard preview. Not to mention the taping of the holiday special on October 22 and 23. If people can hear the songs early, might as well be smart and let the people get them legally. The promo strategy so far is unlike the situation before the release of Carnival Ride, where “So Small” was the only song people had heard from her. Much better this time around.

“Temporary Home” (Oct 20) and “Undo It” (Oct 27) will be released next. Those who subsequently use the “Complete My Album” option will get the bonus track “O Holy Night.”

  6. I’ve really been hoping Carrie’s label would do this because Carrie usually does pretty well on i-Tunes and I had hope after Brad did it for his album. Yay for a new song!! Carrie sounds beautiful and the lyrics are decent for the whole song although cheesy. I’m just really happy for Carrie because you can hear that she’s happy in the way she sings this one.

She really likes the whole circle of life concept doesn’t she LOL. It was there in All American Girl and now again in Mama’s Song.

Gah I can’t stop listening to this for her voice alone. So pretty!!

  7. This song is so endearing and I was crying while hearing it for the first time. The song is a beautiful homage to her dear mom.

  8. Same for me, bmms. Although in an effort not to destroy my cred, I’ll just say I got teary-eyed :) It doesn’t help that I’m close to my mom too and likewise call her ‘Mama.’

“Mama, there’s no way you’ll ever lose me
And giving me away is not goodbye
As you watch me walk down to my future
I hope tears of joy are in your eyes”

  9. LOL fearbear, I know right? Carrie’s so blatant! She’s copying Taylor in every single way, blonde hair, writing songs for her album, and now this countdown thing!

  10. ^^Unless she can actually write decent songs, I don’t think I can say that she has successfully copied Taylor in that aspect ;)

  11. Good one, amiroamor! LOL.

This one’s all about the delicacy of Carrie’s voice IMO. I can’t get over how beautiful she sounds! I’d been worried about Mark Bright overproducing the whole album but he did right by Mama’s Song. I know this is one of the songs Carrie sang at CMT Invitation Only and maybe it’s one of the ones she did for Walmart Soundcheck too. It’ll be great seeing her sing this.

  12. windmills, I agree about Mark Bright. As a side note, whenever I see Gokey fans rejoicing in having Mark Bright as a producer, I always have the inclination to say “Be careful what you wish for.” But anyway, back on topic…

I also agree about how beautiful Carrie’s vocals are in this song. One of the little peeves I have about Carnival Ride is that it was treated like a showcase: Look how wide Carrie’s vocal range is! She can hold the high notes forever! We crammed as many instruments as we could in as many songs as we could!

I personally prefer hearing Carrie maximize her natural gift for phrasing and nuances, which were shown more in Some Hearts, i.e. “The Night Before Life Goes On.” And I love when she uses her pretty voice. Beautiful!

  13. Also, “Mama’s Song” is now #5 on country songs and #44 on all genres. Woohoo!

  14. leilamaurizia: Can I be your friend? LOL. I couldn’t agree with you more.

Here’s a little interview where Carrie talks about Mama’s Song. She explains her reasons for keeping things general with “he is good” – seems she wanted to keep a dual interpretation possible.

  15. LOL windmills, glad you found the sarcasm ;)

Nah, Taylor Swift’s writing skills are way over-rated. “She wears high heels, I wear sneakers”? Sounds like Avril’s “Sk8er Boi” to me.

Back to the topic, thanks for the link windmills, now that she said “this doesn’t have to be a man, but God is good, he can take care of you” I can relate to song even more (I’m a guy and thousands of mile away from home lol)

  16. Nah, Taylor Swift’s writing skills are way over-rated. ‘She wears high heels, I wear sneakers’ ? Sounds like Avril’s ‘Sk8er Boi’ to me.

Oh, you mean pretty much the same way that Carrie’s yodeling is overrated as singing? I guess so.

And yes, because “You Belong With Me” is the only song Taylor Swift has ever written ;)

  17. Boy people really are forgetting what country music really is they don’t get yodeling. All the country greats did it/can do it and I’d love to hear Carrie yodel more! That’s one of the things I love about Carrie’s voice, that you can hear the influence of the legends like Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette on the way she sings. I’m hoping we hear more of that, maybe on that track Look At Me on the new album which sounds pretty traditional country. I get that traditional stuff can be polarizing though. I just love it though!

Mama’s Song is up to #19 on i-Tunes and it’s #3 country! At some point it’ll start dropping off but I’m happy it’s doing well so far.

  19. Boy people really are forgetting what country music really is they don’t get yodeling

Um okay? My post wasn’t about country music in general, it was just about Carrie. I don’t like the tone and quality of her voice, it grates on me. Does that mean I don’t get country music? I love the voices of Martina McBride, Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert. I also like the folksy country touches of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch and Mary Chapin Carpenter. I even enjoy myself a little Dolly Parton once in a while. But that doesn’t mean squat, I guess I still don’t get country music just coz I don’t like queen Carrie, my bad.

  20. Wow! Carrie has the #1 and #2 spots on iTunes country with “Cowboy Casanova” and “Mama’s Song,” respectively. #14 and #16 on all genres. Pretty cool!

  21. I guess I still don’t get country music just coz I don’t like queen Carrie, my bad.

    Yeah, your bad.

  22. ^^Okay, if Carrie Underwood is the measure of great country music, then I’d be happy to admit that I don’t know great country music. Coz I’d much rather listen to the “mediocre” Martina McBride and Reba McEntire any day.

  23. LOL fearbear, chill ! We like who we like and we don’t like who we don’t! Those we like aren’t necessarily great singers or vice versa, it’s just a matter of preference, isn’t it? :)
