Country superstar and Season 4 American Idol champ Carrie Underwood took to Twitter last night to announce her new single, “Little Toy Guns.”
So excited to announce my new single, “Little Toy Guns”. Hope you love this song as much as I do! http://t.co/lyRYWpugHS

Cowritten by Chris De Stefano, Hillary Lindsey and Carrie, “Little Toy Guns” is an emotional midtempo rocker chronicling the state of mind of a young girl who has to endure some knock-down, drag-out arguments between her parents. It continues to position Carrie as an artist of substance who sees life beyond the tailgates, trucks and parties that have overloaded country radio for the past few years, and an artist with heart who wants to tell the stories of people whose voices might not get heard.
Check out a stream of the song here:
That’s super-talented co writer Hillary Lindsey on background & response vocals, by the way.
“Little Toy Guns” is the 2nd original song from Carrie’s Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album, which became Carrie’s 5th album to open at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart (#4 on the all-genre chart), selling 94k copies, the highest 1st week total for a greatest hits set in over 6 1/2 years, and the highest 1st week total for a greatest hits set from a female solo act since 2005. “Little Toy Guns” follows “Something In The Water,” a Grammy-nominated 7 week #1 on the hybrid Billboard Hot Country Songs chart (which combines airplay, sales, and streaming) that stopped short at #2 Mediabase/#3 Billboard Country Airplay due to a shenanigans-hampered chart run. “Something In The Water” has sold over 800k copies in 17 weeks of release. Since Carrie’s tweet last night, “Little Toy Guns” has shot up to #17 country, #100 all genre at Itunes.

Here are the lyrics for “Little Toy Guns.” What do you think of the song, and how do you think it’ll fare at country radio and in sales?
She held onto that heart-shaped locket
Starin’ at a family, flawless
But it ain’t a pretty picture tonight.
Mom and Daddy just won’t stop it
Fightin’ at the drop of a faucet
Cuts through the walls, catastrophic
She’s caught in the crossfire.
Puts her hands over her ears
Starts talking through the tears
She’s saying, she’s praying,
“I wish words were like little toy guns
No sting, no hurtin’ no one
Just a bang, bang rolling off your tongue
(Wish words were like little toy guns)
Yeah, no smoke, no bullets
No kick from the trigger when you pull it
No pain, no damage done
(Wish words were like little toy guns)
And just a bang, bang rolling off your tongue
(Wish words were like little toy guns)
Wish there was a white flag waving
Or that they were both just faking
And it was just a game they were playin’
Like shoot-’em-up cowboys.
Leave the plastic pistols in the front yard
Throw away the scorecard
And just turn off all the noise.
I wish words were like little toy guns
No sting, no hurtin’ no one
Just a bang, bang rolling off your tongue
(Wish words were like little toy guns)
Yeah, no smoke, no bullets
No kick from the trigger when you pull it
No pain, no damage done
(Wish words like were little toy guns)
And just a bang, bang rolling off your tongue
(Wish words were like little toy guns)
Toy guns
Oh, I wish they didn’t cut like a knife
I wish they didn’t break you inside
I wish they didn’t bang, bang, make you wanna run…
Yeah, like little toy guns
No sting, no hurtin’ no one
Just a bang, bang rolling off your tongue
(Wish words were like little toy guns)
Yeah, no smoke, no bullets
No shot from the trigger when you pull it
No pain, no damage done
(Wish words like were little toy guns)
And just a bang, bang rolling off your tongue
(Wish words were like little toy guns)
Oh, like little toy guns.”
