Carrie Underwood & Adam Lambert Record Songs By Nashville Songwriter Tom Shapiro

According to a new video put together by EMI Music Publishing to celebrate Nashville songwriter Tom Shapiro’s success in 2011, he has a cut on Carrie Underwood‘s upcoming album and scored at least a demo cut by Adam Lambert!

Check out a 12 second audio clip of Adam somebody singing an Adam demo of a new song called “Underneath” after the jump!

Tom Shapiro is a very prolific country songwriter whose credits include cowriting “You Won’t Find This” from Carrie’s Carnival Ride album, “Songs Like This” from Carrie’s Play On album, and “I’m Not One Of Them” from Lauren Alaina’s Wildflower album. He has also cowritten hits like Keith Urban’s “You Look Good In My Shirt” and Brooks & Dunn “Ain’t Nothing About You”. Recently, he’s expanded his resume beyond country by cowriting “Honestly” from Kelly Clarkson‘s Stronger album and “The Broken Ones” from Dia Frampton‘s Red album.

Depending on which database you look at, it’s the same team of Tom Shapiro/Catt Gravitt/Robert Marvin who cowrote Kelly’s “Honestly” and Adam’s “Underneath”, though BMI says “Underneath” is cowritten by Shapiro/Gravitt/Josh Kear (who’s known for cowriting Carrie’s “Before He Cheats” and Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now”. Songfile credits all 4 writers on “Underneath”: Shapiro/Gravitt/Marvin/Kear. Both “Honestly” and “Underneath” have that same emotional, dark, pop/rock vibe to them and in fact there’s a demo of “Honestly” out there that made it sound like a great fit for Adam too.

Shapiro’s known to have cowritten “Take Me To The City” with Carrie and fellow Nashville songwriter/hitmaker Luke Laird. It’s not confirmed that this is the song that Carrie’s cut, nor is it confirmed that “Underneath” will make Adam’s upcoming album. The “Underneath” clip is from 1:05 to 1:17 in the video and the Carrie mention is at 1:34.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t listen with earphones at first but this isn’t Adam singing the demo. Still, if the publishing company chose to feature a demo with his name attached then odds are Adam cut the song. Tom Shapiro’s had huge country hits and scoring a Kelly cut and Dia’s lead single would be enough “outside of genre” cred for him, he wouldn’t need to grasp at a possible Adam credit. But, it definitely doesn’t mean the song made Adam’s upcoming album.
