Carly Rae Jepsen To Make Broadway Debut in Cinderella

95-106 Capital FM Summertime Ball 2012

Canadian Idol alum, Carly Rae Jepsen, is Broadway bound! The producers of the stage musical, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella announced on Sunday that the “Call Me Maybe” singer will step into the lead role early next year.

Carly will take over the role beginning February 12 for a 12-week run. TV star, Fran Drescher, will also be joining the cast as the evil step mother. Both will be making their Broadway debut.

Laura Osne will complete her year long run as Cinderella in January.

The press release reveals that Carly grew up with a fantasy of performing on Broadway. She appeared in high school productions of Annie, Grease, and The Wiz. She attended the Canadian College of Performing Arts after high school.

In an email to the New York Times, Carly said about her theater training:

“It was essentially musical theater training with studies in singing, dancing and acting. My favorite part of the school year was our trip to New York, where we met Broadway performers and toured the theaters.” She cited her love of Cinderella’s story as a reason for choosing this particular production as her Broadway debut. “It’s so hopeful and inspiring,” she said. “I’ve always been one to believe in the impossible, so I relate to her character completely.”

Carly is totally a stage newbie. She’s got her work cut out for her in order to prepare for such a high profile role. Good luck, Carly!

Meanwhile, the singer is working on a new album which she plans to release next year.
