It’s UK Hits week, and this week’s mentor is the legendary Tom Jones! The kids pick some fabulous songs. A really enjoyable show tonight. Tomorrow night, Sir Tom Jones performs.
- Mark Day – “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis – I can’t believe Mark picked this song. Singing a current hit song means comparisons are inevitable, and they may not be pretty. But actually, he’s not half bad. The judges liked his vocals, but didn’t find the performance passionate enough.
- Mitch MacDonald – Sorry, still can’t get past Mitch’s goat-vibrato whine. He wobbles around the notes like he’s looking for something but doesn’t quite find it. Not feeling his version of this classic Lennon tune. The judges weren’t crazy about it either.“Jealous Guy” By John Lennon
- Drew Wright – “Creep” by Radiohead – “Creep” Great song choice, but Drew gives it his typical bland, faceless delivery. The band and back-up singers drown him out. The judges, however, compliment him on his vocals and found his performance impassioned. He hit the big money notes, sure. But other than that. Eh. The hair cut and shave = many new fans. Smart move, Drew.
- Theo Tams – “You Had Me” by Joss Stone – Theo asks Tom Jones advice on performance, because this week, he comes out from behind his instrument to work the stage. He seems a tad uncomfortable, and the movement affects his vocals in spots, but its still a good performance. Theo brings great phrasing and passion to whatever he sings, tonight is no exception. The judges love it.
- Mookie Morris – “Lola” by the Kinks – Great song choice! Mookie is cooler than cool, and he does the Kinks justice. Mookie has charisma to spare. The judges think he’s a star.
- Amberly Thiessen – “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae – Her lovely, lyrical vocals and exquisite phrasing are a perfect match for this song. She performs the tune with ease–very nice! Compliments all around from the judges.
- Earl Stevenson – “Change The World” by Eric Clapton – Performance of the night. Earl turns every song he sings into an Earl Stevenson Production. His interpretation of this song is fantastic, even with the crazy wonky notes. I love this guy, and so do the judges.
