In Britney Spears new memoir, The Woman in Me, the pop star shared her thoughts on the one season she spent as a judge on The X Factor USA in 2012.

According to Page Six, Britney wrote that she despised her turn as judge because it filled her with fear and anxiety.

“I think a lot of people are really professional on TV, like Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani. When the camera’s on them, they thrive. And that’s great,” Britney wrote, referring to two pop stars who have coached on The Voice.

But the singer admits that she lacked the same confidence after being placed under a conservatorship in 2008.

“I used to be able to do that when I was younger, but again, I feel like I age backwards when I’m afraid,” she shared. “And so I got to where I was very, very nervous if I knew I had to be on air, and I didn’t like being nervous all day long.”

Remember, that on one hand, her family deemed her too sick to make ANY decisions about her life, both financially and personally. Yet, they deemed her well enough to undertake a stressful job, judging on a network talent show.

“I’ve been forced into things I didn’t want to do and been humiliated”

Looking back, Britney says she has “accepted” that she is “not cut out” for certain jobs. “I can tell people who try to push me in that direction no,” she writes. But in 2008, while under the conservatorship run by her father and the lawyers he hired, she could not say no.

“I’ve been forced into things I didn’t want to do and been humiliated. It’s not my thing at this point.”

While Britney’s facial expressions as she reacted to contestant performances and remarks by her fellow judges, were endlessly GIF and memeable, Britney tended towards short, robotic like responses when it came her turn to speak.

I attended a filming in Providence, Rhode Island, and as she entered the auditorium, she got the biggest response from fans. Bigger than Simon Cowell and fellow pop star Demi Lovato. The crowd loved her, regardless of how uncomfortable she was on camera.

Britney was a judge on Season 2 of The X Factor alongside Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid. She didn’t return for the third and final season. However, she did make headlines as the highest paid judge on the panel, making a reported $15 million for one season.
