America’s Got Talent – Semi-Final Round One

The semi-final round of America’s Got Talent finally began this week. The first 12 acts performed tonight. For the most part, the acts were underwhelming.

With the exception of Michael Grimm, who sang a self-assured version of  Joe Cocker’s “You Can Leave Your Hat On” despite dehydration and strep throat, the rest of the singers were embarrassingly bad.

Singer/songwriter type, Taylor Mathews was even more amateurish and off-key than usual. The two young girls, Christina & Ali, with Cystic Fibrosis were as awful as ever. And Kristina Young’s misguided and horrifying take on Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” should have never seen the light of day, but I still felt bad when the judges ripped into her.

Videos after the JUMP…

And Prince Poppycock? Well, there are no words, really. The arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was weird and choppy and changing the last lyric to “Nothing really matters, but me.” What the eff?

The other acts: I still don’t get the Kite Kid, Connor Doran.  Didn’t get the rock and roll electricity act, ArcAttack either.  Kid acts? UGH. Future Funk (cute, but terrible), Anna & Patryk (Good, but I don’t care) go home and play. AscenDance–rock climbing? Zzz. Magician Antonio Restivo…Cheesy! Hilariously bad:  Goth magician, Dan Speery and his lame ass fake arm and his even lamer ass defense of his crappy act.

The 5 acts going through to the Top 10 tomorrow: Michael Grimm, Prince Poppycock, Anna & Patryk for sure.  Maybe Taylor Mathews, Christina & Ali or ArcAttack.

Anna & Patryck

Christina & Alli

Antonio Restivo

Future Funk

Taylor Mathews

Connor Doran

Dan Sperry

Kristina Young

ArcAttack

AscenDance

Michael Grimm

Prince Poppycock

  1. I love Michael Grimm… that’s all I have. I flipped back and forth from “River Monsters” to try to catch Michael, which is about all the more invested I’m willing to get. Luckily he didn’t come on when River Monsters man was reeling in the giant sturgeon or… would’ve had to catch him here.

Michael’s voice reminds me a bit of Otis Redding. This is good. I love me some Otis.

  2. this show is mostly unwatchable. i haven’t been watching all season but decided to tune in for the semi-final rounds. it’s on as background noise in my house and occasionally i glance up at the tv to see who’s setting whom on fire. but, tierbee, if you love michael grimm, i better watch out for him. i have to say you do have impeccable taste in at least one particular reality tv singer… :)

Hee, thanks :) Michael Grimm is the real deal, I think – another guy who has paid his dues, has been out grinding trying to get a chance, I really like him. Gritty voice, very soulful. Though the *backup dancers* – sheesh, make them go away. They are incredibly distracting. The show is just horrid, it really is. You might be better to just catch Michael here at MJs, haha.

  4. That nearly dead girl with the electricity act was totally creeping me out. She stayed in character a little too long for me. And the magician with the fake arm was very creepy, too.

I really like him, too, but I didn’t like his song choice so much tonight. And because of the lyrics, I kept thinking those backup dancers were going to strip. Very distracting. And not in a good way. This show IS horrid. The only reason it is still around is because it airs in the summer and nothing else is on. I just can’t wrap my ahead around the fact that the winner wins $1 million dollars.

  5. I really like him, too, but I didn’t like his song choice so much tonight.

It had its moments where I liked it a lot, and then some of it seemed a little rushed/flat – I did think you could tell that he wasn’t feeling well, he looked like he was struggling a bit and it’s usually effortless for him. Would’ve been better without the appallingly ungainly stripper/dancers; and the cameras kept panning to them – why?! When he hits his higher notes, that’s when he really reminds me of Otis. Did I mention I love Otis? I’m not going to put Michael in the same class as Otis because… it’s *OTIS*. But I really like his sound and his vibe.

  6. Yes, an underwhelming show overall. Prince Poppycock was very overrated. I mean, he wasn’t boring like most of the acts tonight, but a standing O? Really? His vocals were mediocre at best, and how can he be the male Lady Gaga if he’s not even a pop act? The type of music they sing is completely different. I don’t get it. He reminds me of Adam Lambert, but with even more make-up on and not as good a vocalist, lol.

Michael Grimm was excellent tonight. His charisma is starting to shine through more, and his vocals are spot-on. He’s one of my favorites for sure. I do agree, though, that the background dancers were distracting. Why can’t they add a band to perform with him instead? That would be cool.

I just can’t wrap my ahead around the fact that the winner wins $1 million dollars.

It isn’t actually a million dollars. Notice the disclaimer they sneak in during the end credits: “The prize, which totals $1,000,000, is payable in a financial annuity over forty years, or the contestant may choose to receive the present cash value of such annuity.”

After incomes taxes and a fixed 5 percent interest rate that comes out to about $375,000. Sneaky, huh?

  7. Prince Poppycock was very overrated.

I didn’t like his performance tonight, at all. The song was all wrong and it was very choppy and… indulgent? I liked him at first but I think I’m tired of his schtick.

  8. I’m wondering how many will actually go thru tonight — if it’s to the top 10 and there are what 5 groups total only 2 will go thru from tonight. They had the top 48, then the wild cards and you tubes. Or maybe my brain isn’t functioning at this hour of the night…

  9. I don’t have much to spend on music right now but I did pick up a Michael Grimm song, “The Reason,” very soulful and Otis-ish. My daddy would call it “belly rubbin’ music” – like it a lot.

  10. MJ – I thught the song that Grimm sang was “You Can Leave Your Hat On”…sung and made “famous” by Joe Cocker??

  11. ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’ by Joe Cocker is the Grimm song. It was used in the movie 9 1/2 Weeks when Kim B. danced a strip to it. And it was stripped to in the wonderful movie The Full Monty, when the guys all stripped to it. So yeah, it actually is used very effectively as a strip song which is why this stupid show had the background dancers and it makes me wonder if this song was chosen by Grimm. Not a good choice for Grimm, IMO, since it is meant to be sung very seductively.

  12. What else to say but the whole show is crap and I wasted 2 hours of my life watching.. WHY? The only reason I tuned in was to see the little opera singer because she’s from Pgh and husband knows her mother. She wasn’t even on. Michael Grimm? Blah. I hate to say it, but the contestants on AI 9 were more entertaining!

  13. Micheal Grimm preety good, made enjoy him. There just seems to be something fake about him tho. Hes on there to help his family? Isnt that getting old. And showing him in the hospital, well shades of Crystal, and even Fantasia. I feel bad that he was sick, but after his song he even said he didnt feel that bad, just hard to hit some notes. Well Prince P. is my guilty pleasure. Sure his vocals werent up to par, but he fansinates me, He is really pretty good looking, and then he seems to get into this character that he hids behind, that is pretty funny. And his makeup and he designs all his own costumes, just makes me what to see more of him.

  14. I luckily did not have to watch the entire AGT to see Michael Grimm — just had to watch the last few acts. What an awful show!

But thankfully got to see Michael — who was great.

Prince Poppycock — What does he have to do with Lady Gaga? Reminds me more of Timmy Tim with nice costumes. And what is all the hype about? The judges giving him a Standing O just seemed kind of desperate to me. He ever had to check a large section of the song because he does have the range to sing it. Love or hate Gaga but she is much more than a novelty act.

  15. I don’t watch that show but just watched Michael Grimm and the bad Lady Gaga song. Holy crap what an awful show – the forced, melodramatic back stories and the hideous staging make me wonder how anyone sits through it week after week.

That said, Michael Grimm is really talented and pretty cute. I’ll just keep an eye on him via this blog though because I think I would lose the will to live if I had to sit through that crapfest on TV.

  16. Michael Grimm will go nowhere just like two other past finalists with equally good voices- Cas Haley and Eli Mattson.

Prince Poppycock is intriguing but don’t see the male Lady Gaga or as someone else posted- Adam Lambert.

  17. That said, Michael Grimm is really talented and pretty cute. I’ll just keep an eye on him via this blog though because I think I would lose the will to live if I had to sit through that crapfest on TV.

I feel the same way. I caught his audition (the first show they had WAY back in June) and he’s been the one I’ve been keeping tabs on through this blog. I have no interest in the show. Michael should win this thing, hands down. No one else comes close to him.

  18. I was a bit surprised that Prince Poppycock received such dull reviews here. He is my guilty pleasure as well as Piers, mainly because he is so campy. It’s Liberace, Freddie Mercury and Adam Lambert, all rolled into one. The perfect Vegas act. He makes a handsome guy and a beautiful woman. I just love him and was glad to see him get the pimp spot, thought his voice was right on (it is hard to get a seven minute song into 90 seconds, but he did it just right, IMO.)

I really am enjoying this show for what it is. Non threatening, pure fun and not mean spirited. Having said that, the rest of the singing was below par. Michael Grimm was always one of my two favorites, but oh that song choice left me cold. I do like him and think he can sing and will definitely go through along with Prince Poppycock.

  19. So much better than last year! Prince Poppycock is the whole package! 10 year olds should never be in Vegas!

  20. I loved Price Poppycock…at least he performed. I can see him in Vegas…any of the rest not so much. Michael Grimm is totally over rated. His voice is average at best. There are a million others already in the business that sound like him

  21. I think OTT works best on this show, so my favs were Prince P, the Fire Guy, Nerdy Lightning Peeps, and Geek Show Act. I also liked the Two Little Breakdancers just cuz they were so freaking cute. All the singers were mediocre at best. I seriously can’t stand Grimm. Gives off a sleazy, phony vibe to me. Also kinda reminds me of Taylor Hicks. DNW.

  22. Season 9 of American idol totally spoiled ANY fanship i would have with ANY LAME-O guitar strumming acoustic guitar player AND anyone with a sob story that tries to get points for mentioning that.

and also that Connor with epilepsy, he is acting like its sucha bad thing. I had epilepsy and there is nothign to feel sorry for. the person with epilepsy had a fainting episode where you pass out for a time, but its no biggie. well, unless you are driving but your not supposed to drive.. so i dont feel sorry for the kite guy.

PRINCE POPPYCOCK FOR THE WIN.. I hope that weird LOG kid who sings weird does not get a win over other deserving people. I would hate that. she is too weird.. im still trying to figure out what she does with her mouth to make those sounds. her lips do not quite match the sounds coming out.. she is the 2nd coming of Linda blair as The Excorcist child.

  23. Yay, will we get Poppycock vs. Grimm fanwars? This show has already generated more passion than Idol did last season. Heh. I think I’m just going to watch videos here, I don’t know if I can sit through the show, it just is not my thing. Maybe once they winnow out more of the unwatchables.

  24. If it’s Poppycock vs. Grimm then I’m team Grimm all the way. Poppycock is overrated. Male Lady Gaga? Yeah right…

  25. Haha, they should just get rid of the rest and have a Poppycock/Grimm showdown. *Waves GO GRIMM flag*

  26. I’ve only watched a little bit of the show here and there, but after catching Taylor Mathews last night and having seen him like once earlier in the season, he’s my pick to win it all. Not cause I think he’s the best, but he’s the type. Just wait and see. He’s the shy, kinda unsure WGWG (or piano) and he’ll have girls falling all over themselves to vote for him.

Kinda shocked that all 3 ended up buzzing Kristina – not that Piers did though of course. She deserved it but wow…they almost didn’t need to say anything at all after that. Getting shut down before even finishing your performance in the semifinals says it all.

  27. With all these acts Vegas or not, why is it always coming down to a singer. Opera, or the Mattson, Grimm type. Poppycock is the perfect Vegas act. Or one of the other OTT acts. They just need to up there game.

  28. I haven’t watched this but I did check out Michael Grimm’s video. He’s good, has a neon-soul vibe.

  29. Just out of curiosity, I checked the ratings for last night. The show had 10.5 million viewers! It had twice as many viewers as everything else on, with several shows only drawing in 3 million viewers. I wonder what the percentage is of people who actually like the show versus someone like me who can’t take her eyes off of a trainwreck.

I had NO idea. What a joke! I like Sharon Osbourne. Her critiques are always spot on. Oh how I wish she was an Idol judge instead.

  30. Really glad to see some Prince Poppycock fans come out and have their say. He is so intriguing and talented. He just puts a smile on my face. Vegas, here he comes, one way or the other.

I do believe he is one of the few performers that the package prior to his performance just adds to his mystique. That handsome soft spoken genteel man and then BOOM, the make-up and the wig goes on and Prince Poppycock emerges and his campy charm is in complete contrast. Who is the real person? It doesn’t matter. He is pure entertainment. I just feel that he is laughing with the audience. A consummate unique performer. I am finding myself wondering what he will wear, what he will do next time. That doesn’t happen too often with the bland singers, and the same type of entertainers over and over. He is an original, IMO.

  31. Grimm or Poppycock… poppycock or grimm??? Those two are the only performers I’ve liked in my youtube meanderings so far (I haven’t seen the actual show), so I wouldn’t know who to choose in a final showdown between them.

I feel like Prince P. going back and forth between his two mirrors, lol. Just please, not the overly precocious little girl who sings opera.

  32. I know that not everybody likes him, but I really like Piers Morgan.
He always the first one or the only one that buzzes when he does not like someone.
He has his own opinion and he doesn’t really care.
