The America’s Got Talent 2020 Live Shows kicked off tonight with Kelly Clarkson sitting in for an ailing Simon Cowell. Most of the action took place in a properly socially distanced studio. Kelly and judges Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel sat far apart behind a wide table. Host Terry Crews made sure to stay distant from the contestants as he spoke with them.

There was no live audience, but the walls were covered with fans watching and clapping along at home (crowd noises were DEFINITELY sweetened, though).
Some acts performed outside on familiar movie lots, while one act performed on a massive stage in Taiwan. I would say that tonight’s show was the best stab at mounting a live talent show while following strict COVID-19 protocols yet. The networks are getting better and better at it.
I like the idea of having the judges and talent together in one place. The Voice and American Idol spring shows felt so…canned. Performances filmed ahead of time, in another place with iPhones lose the immediacy of live performances. The Voice is back in the studio. Hopefully, American Idol figures out how to film live while keeping people safe. ABC may have to completely reimagine the Hollywood Round.
But I digress!
It’s time to vote for your favorite performances, and predict which acts will make it to the next round. I think: Roberta Battaglia, Archie Williams, Feng E, Brett Loudermilk, and Double Dragon maybe?
