Seven acts advanced to the live shows on Tuesday’s America’s Got Talent 2019 Judge Cuts 1. Country singer Brad Paisley served as guest judge and chose young singer songwriter Sophie Pecora as his Golden Buzzer. It allowed the fifteen year old singer to advance immediately to the live shows. The choice made sense. She’s a singer/songwriter like he is, but also a young person with potential.
As a guest judge, Brad wasn’t very constructive, but he was quippy, which was mildly amusing at times. I don’t remember him being very constructive as a regular judge on the ABC one and done singing show Rising Star a few years back. He does seem like a very nice man with a decent sense of humor.
However, the rest of the judges–Howie Mandel, Gabrielle Union, Julianne Hough and Simon Cowell–mixed it up. Finally! In the Auditions, most acts advanced with 4 yeses, which was quite boring. Finally, there’s disagreement on the panel. Maybe it is by design. With results at the end of the show, it heightens the suspense to have the judges arguing.
But then, there’s very little suspense when every single montaged singer is cut. And acts scheduled in the last slots of the show move on. It was pretty easy to guess who would advance. There was one surprise for me. I thought for sure graceful hoop aerialist, Matthew Richardson would have advanced. Simon said he could headline a show. And then the ax fell. Oh well, there’s always the wildcard. I would have swapped out Emerald Belles for Matthew.
I was a tiny bit surprised that the Sentimentalists didn’t advance. But then again, acts like the Clairvoyants from a few seasons back set the bar high. That couple knew how to spin a suspenseful narrative.
I usually don’t enjoy the choirs, but NDLOVU Youth Choir were superb. The best choir to ever compete on AGT.
