America’s Got Talent celebrates 20 seasons with the return of American Idol 11 finalist Jessica Sanchez

America’s Got Talent returns to NBC on Tuesday May 27 for its landmark 20th season. Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara return to the judges panel. Plus, veteran judge Mel B. joins them, taking the place of the departing Heidi Klum.

As the premiere fast approaches, the network dropped its first official trailer, which contains nostalgia and a few surprises. The biggest twist is the return of Jessica Sanchez, who competed on the first season of the competition in 2006 as an 11 year old vocalist. She left the Top 40 as a wildcard chosen by guest judge Brandy. She chose Jessica after NBC did not air her audition. However, young Jessica was eliminated before the Semi-finals.

A more successful singing show run came when she finished in second place on season 11 of American Idol in 2012 behind winner Phillip Phillips. After an early elimination, the judges panel, including Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, used their judges save on her, and she continued all the way to the finale. Since then, the Filipino-Mexican singer has been releasing music and touring all over the world, particularly in the Philippines. “After 10 years,” said Sofia after Jessica performed, “This was a special moment.” How far will she go on America’s Talent? Fans will have to tune in to find out.

America’s Got Talent season 20 promises “One Epic Summer”

The promo also features fan favorite acts such as Kodi Lee, Terry Fator, Grace Vanderwaal, Brandon Leake, Piff the Magic Dragon, Darci Lynne, and Richard Goodall. We also catch glimpses of the acts to come and the judges reacting with surprise, horror and excitement to each one. There are dance acts, contortionists, acrobats, singers and more.

“We want bigger, better than we’ve ever seen before. declared Howie. “I haven’t said it so far,” said Mel B. to a contestant, “But I’m going to say it to you, THAT WAS OFF THE CHARTS!” As a contestant weeped, Simon said, “You have just set the bar for season 20.”

One Epic Summer is the tagline emblazoned across the screen as the judges and host Terry Crews hit their Golden Buzzers for the season (Of course the Golden Buzzer is back! How many more can the show incorporate? Last summer featured NINE).

America’s Got Talent Season 20 premieres on NBC on Tuesday May 27 at 8 pm ET/PT, streaming on Peacock next day.
