American Idol season 11 winner Phillip Phillips has landed an acting gig. The singer will guest star on the CBS network police procedural Hawaii Five-0. The episode airs next Friday January 19 at 9:00 ET/PT, which happens to be the day Phillip drops his third studio album, Collateral.
Here’s the episode description for “N? keiki a Kalaihaohia” (Hawaiian for “The Children of Kalaihoahia”):
When the corpse of a diamond smuggler is stolen from a graveyard, Five-0 tracks down his partner, Voss (guest star “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips), who will stop at nothing to retrieve their latest batch of contraband. Also, Adam recruits a new confidential informant, Jessie Nomura (Christine Ko); Tani gets a devastating call; and McGarrett tasks Pua to find his and Danny’s stolen tools.
Hawaii Five-O stars Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin and is currently in the show’s eighth season.
This is not the first time Phillip turned up on series television. He previously made a guest appearance on another CBS show, the now cancelled Pure Genius. He played himself in that role. The Hawaii Five-O guest spot marks the first time the singer will play a fictional character. And a bad guy to boot! Sounds intriguing.
As far as the new album is concerned, Phillip said in a statement: “I’m excited to show people who the new Phillip is. These songs tell the stories about the past three years – all the good, all the bad, all the sad, all the happy. I promise this next release is worth the wait.”
Additionally, Phillip will be heading out on tour which kicks off in Cherokee, NC, on February 9. Click for ticket information.
Many artists kick off an album release with a talk show appearance or release party. Guest starring on television drama is a novel way of promoting new music. A hint to the “new Phillip” the singer is teasing?
