American Idol season 6 winner Jordin Sparks be making her second trip to Broadway when she takes the starring role in Waitress: The Musical. She’s set to take over the titular role as pie-maker Jenna from September 15-October 27.
She’s the second American Idol alum to play the role. Season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee who played the role on Broadway last summer She also took on the role in London this past spring.
Previously Jordin made her stage and Broadway debut in 2010 playing Nina in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical In the Heights.
“I’ve missed the Broadway stage ever since I took my final bow in In the Heights in 2010,” Jordin said in a statement to People magazine. “I am so excited to be able to return to it and serve up some musical pie!”
The singer was previously set to star in the Freeform television series “Besties.” But unfortunately a network executive shakeup resulted in the series being taken off the schedule for a revamp. Good for Jordin finding another gig.
Jordin has released three full length albums and 4 EPs since winning American Idol in 2007 at 16 years of age. In May of 2018, she welcomed a son, DJ, with husband Dana Isaiah.
After opening at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in March 2016, Waitress earned critical acclaim and scored four Tony nominations. The show will close on Jan. 5, 2020.
