American Idol season 5 runner-up and Scorpion star Katharine McPhee is headed to Broadway. Check out a first look at her leading role in the musical Waitress, set for a limited run beginning April 10 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
Currently playing the part Katharine will be stepping into is Sara Bareilles, who composed the musical’s score. The role, of pregnant pie maker Jenna Hunterson, originated with Tony winning actress Jessie Mueller.
American Idol’s Katharine McPhee Makes Broadway Debut in Waitress
Waitress was first a 2007 Adrienne Shelly movie starring Keri Russell, about a waitress in a small town who enters a pie contest in hopes of using the prize money to escape her unhappy marriage.
Waitress is the first Broadway musical to employ an all-female creative team. In addition to Bareilles’ music and lyrics, the show features a book by Jessie Nelson, choreography by Lorin Latarro, and direction from Diane Paulus.
While this is Katharine’s first Broadway role, she starred in the NBC musical drama Smash, about an actress vying for a role in a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe.
