Caleb Johnson complained to reporters after last night’s American Idol Top 5 performance show that he HATED Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” and didn’t know why America chose the song.

“I hate that song,” Johnson told PEOPLE frankly Wednesday after his performance of “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” “I don’t know why [America chose it]. I guess it was because it was a rock ballad.”

“I kind of thought, ‘I’ll just do the best I can and get through it as best as possible and try and make it as believable as possible,’ ” he told reporters. “It was dramatic and had all the candles behind me, so I really like that aspect. But other than that, I hated that song.”

“Thank God I had the other song,” he said of getting to perform Whitesnake’s “Still of the Night” later in the evening. “If not, I would be going home.”

I’m a little confused. I thought the finalists were handed a list of fan tweeted songs from which they could choose two?  Caleb is behaving as if he had no choice. This is definitely a question I’ll be asking the Idols later on! Were you all handed a list or not?

Caleb’s version of the classic tune was arguably lackluster. How is it going to be if he wins and is handed a terrible coronation song to perform over and over again on tour and beyond?
