American Idol XIII Judges Have Fun in Detroit

Earlier this week, the American Idol judges were in Detroit, MI auditioning hopefuls. Judge, Harry Connick Jr. spoke with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, sharing his thoughts on his new gig.

“It couldn’t be more fun,” he says. “It’s fun when it needs to be, and it’s serious and it’s intense. All of the things that you would hope it would be.”

But they’re not laughing at some of the Idol hopefuls who aren’t talented, he insists. ”We’re laughing at the right stuff. We’re laughing at things that are funny, never laugh at the contestants … it’s a great environment!”

Look at them having fun! Forget about what happened in the past, it’s the year of the Fun! panel. Actually, in the 12 minute preview of the Boston Auditions I watched (Click to read my thoughts) there was some real chemistry going on between Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. Let’s hope it’s more than just the magic of editing.

Listen to Harry’s interview below.

In fact, in the name of FUN, at the Detroit press conference for members of the media, Keith, Harry and Ryan’s seats were lowered, while Jennifer’s was raised — a visual illustration of where the judges think they rank in terms of importance.

Harry was hopeful about the talent in Detroit. “A couple of people are straight-away top three,” he enthused.

“Lots of good talent here in Michigan,” Keith Urban added. “Detroit delivered.”

“I’ve got this system where I put a heart around someone who I really think can make the top 10,” Jennifer told the press. “Yesterday I think I had one, today I had six.”

The hopefuls were chosen from around 3,500 auditioners who turned up at July’s open call.
