American Idol Top 16 Schedule Change

This week, with the finalists whittled down to 16, Idol producers are cutting back the performance shows to 1 hour. Hooray. Less blah blah from the judges, more music from the contestants. (I’m setting extra time on my DVR just in case, however)

Check out the schedule–note that Wednesday’s Top 8 Guys performance episode begins at 9 pm.

  1. wouldnt it be top 8 girls and top 8 guys? not 12 and 12? since they are down to 16…

  2. Less blah blah from the judges, more music from the contestants.

    Are you sure?? LOL!

  3. Let’s see 8 contestants, 4 judges + Kara’s mouth. I’m thinking it’s a tough call whether they can do it in an hour.

  4. Unless they duct tape ellen’s and Kara’s mouth shut, there still is a great chance of running over.

  5. It’s funny they cut to one hour on top 8 girls/guys night.
Last year it was on the top 8 show that they went way overtime and didn’t have time to judge Mad World.

  6. I disagree about Kara’s mouth. She is the only one of the judges that seems to think through her critiques. They are usually well spoken and it’s good advice. She doesn’t plod through it either, it may be a bit lengthy from time to time, but it is constructive. As is Simon’s. All you get from Randy is the same cliched’ phrases and from Ellen, she is just trying not to repeat herself too much, it’s not exactly riveting from her either. But to be fair, it’s not her function, so she is cool.

I am glad for the hour though, less chat chat and more sing sing is good.

Are you serious? That was Top 8 where they ran over with Mad World?

Geez – aren’t the songs only 1.5 minutes long? If so, that’s a total of 12 minutes singing time.

Let’s say there are 15-20 minutes of commercials in an hour (just guessing – I have no idea). That leaves 29-33 minutes of Blah, Blah, Blah. That’s almost 4 minutes of commenting per contestant, or maybe 3 minutes if you give Ryan 8 minutes for intro, etc. Too much Blah, Blah, Blah (just like my radio LOL!).

  8. Boy, they really want to stack the deck for the girls, don’t they? Doesn’t the show typically do worse in the ratings war when it doesn’t get underway until 9:00 pm?

I realize the girls are competing against each other for the moment, as is true with the guys, but this is when you start to build a fan base, so I could see this hurting the guys a bit.

OTOH, it’s entirely possible that they already are receiving far more votes than the gals, so the producers are just trying to slow down that train.

  9. Are you serious? That was Top 8 where they ran over with Mad World?

Yes, it created an even bigger buzz because a lot of people DVR the show and didn’t get to see it so they went to search on the internet.
Rickey had a ton of traffic that week.

That’s just the way it is because of scheduling, the Wednesday show will always be one hour show from now on. I doubt there’s any knollish aspect to this. The impact on wheter a guy could win at this stage would be minimal.

That’s because the judges (and ptb, I guess) did a TERRIBLE job of budgeting time during that show. It was kind of hilarious to watch on the recent rerun – they would spend 5 minutes apiece on the first 6 contestants, then suddenly had to cut it down to 2 words each for the last few contestants.

Hopefully they’ll budget time better this year. Seriously, I wish Ryan would kind of take the job of being the official Oscar “wrap it up” guy.

Also, I’m happy the shows are shorter this week – it means I won’t miss Lost!!

  11. So far this season I have found Ellen’s critiques to be spot on, just because she tries to inject some humor doesn’t make what she is saying any less valid.

I also think Kara is giving out some good critiques; I just don’t like her too much.

Of course I am a huge Simon fan…the critiques he has given over the 8-1/2 seasons have been mostly spot on. When he kicked JHud off the show, he was right (yes she has done some good things since, but her stint on AI – is what Simon was critiquing), and I agree, at that time she had ZERO stage presence, she could “holler” out a song, but that was it for me.

My least favorite judge is Randy – I especially dislike his “two-toned” teeth, so when he opens his mouth to speak I get annoyed. It seems like his critique is just so he isn’t the odd man out.

I am glad the show has been trimmed down to one hour…

  12. Are you serious? That was Top 8 where they ran over with Mad World?

    That wasn’t funny-it was a DISASTER(oops I think I quoted the wrong comment lol)

i actually think the judges are too serious this season…it’s a tv show
    for godssake

  13. I guess we won’t get intro packages this week (which I don’t mind at all).

  14. That wasn’t funny-it was a DISASTER(oops I think I quoted the wrong comment lol)

As a serious IDOL fan, I would never say that was funny. I always set my DVR to go 30 minutes past the scheduled end time so I didn’t miss Mad World last year, but I’m very surprised they went over at Top 8 last year with 12 minutes of singing. That is quite shocking, actually.

I agree that Ryan needs to watch the time and move things along like Cat Deeley does on SYTYCD.

  15. I was actually noticing that the two hour show was allowing the contestants to sing longer than usual. I think now they’re songs will be cut down more (we all know the judges won’t be cut down!)… Kind of too bad.

  16. That wasn’t funny-it was a DISASTER(oops I think I quoted the wrong comment lol)

lol – I think you were meaning to quote my comment about it being kinda hilarious – sorry!!! Considering that the aftermath of MW/time-over-run-gate turned out so well, I guess I’m pretty ok with it ;-)

ETA: Oh, and I guess I found it hilarious because, well, IDK – it really was kind of when they literally did spend SOOO much time on the first contestants, and then very suddenly and obviously had to truncate comments for the last few. If “standing O” was all they needed to say to Adam, I guess I’m ok with that.

But, IA – judges just keeping things more succinct and Ryan moving things along would be much better and more fair to everyone.

  17. Ok, the 90 minute show makes more sense. I don’t want to get too optimistic though about the judges babbling any less than normal though. heh

A 2-hour show would have been better.

  18. Good! Two hours has been excruciating, thank goodness I fast forward through much of it. I hope they cut down on the judges time though and not the contestants. Four judges is really too many. And it’s true, they are being too serious. They’re taking the joy out of it. They’re such a downer, that’s why I forward through much of what they say, I just listen to enough to get the gist of what they think. I would hate to miss some funny or insightful comments, but to listen to four judges give deadly serious comments 10 or 12 times is just too much.

p.s. and thank god for Ellen’s sense of humor. Kara and Simon’s antics are childish and annoying. At least with Paula it was halfway real. But it’s obvious the producers told Kara to hang all over Simon. Actually Paula didn’t do that. Simon bothered her and she pushed him away, which was also annoying but this thing with Kara hanging on him is worse.

    I was quoting valentin432’s post :)

Although I think by funny they meant strange? Or maybe I misread it…:)

  20. Unless they duct tape ellen’s and Kara’s mouth shut, there still is a great chance of running over.

Ellen and Kara? Hello, how about Simon and Randy? Okay, granted, Simon’s usually pretty succinct, but so’s Ellen; her words are to the point. Randy rambles far more than Ellen, so there’s no reason why it’s only the women’s mouths who should be taped shut.

  21. I was kinda liking the two hour show. (But DVR makes a huge difference!) It seemed to me that the performances were longer. I like seeing how well (or how badly) the singers do with carrying through the song from beginning to end, how the energy they bring to the song plays out. It bugs me when the performances are so short. Definitely sometimes makes the song weird if it’s not “edited” well. Hoping that doesn’t happen this week.

  22. I think a 90 minute format would be best with the 4 judges. Except for Simon, they have difficulty editing themselves!
I’m so glad that Kara’s been given the big NO on the cougar thing,
it was only funny for the first 3-4 words, and got uncomfortable fast. Kara can give some good constructive and helpful critiques…
..and then she just blows it, leaving some of us going..WHAT!!!!
THE…??? Yeah..She really “doesn’t” get how she comes across!!!,which is sad because she has good knowledge to share.

  23. To be honest, I’m more excited about the glee rerun than about Idol. I’m just not really into any of the contestants this year. And I’m not just saying that because I’m an Adam fan and “omg, Adam totally spoiled the show for meeee!” (I’m actually NOT an Adam fan at all lol). I’m saying it because so far, the song choices have been dull as dishwater and there just really doesn’t seem to be anything amazing about any of the contestants. Some of them are decent, yes, but no one has made me feel the need to spend two hours voting after the show. In fact, I didn’t even vote at all last week and that has to be a first for me. This time last year, I was already a huge Allison fan and was starting to like Kris.

I’m hoping that changes soon, though. I miss being excited about the show.
