American Idol Reunion: Jennifer Hudson Show Nabs Simon Cowell

Jennifer Hudson Simon Cowell

The Jennifer Hudson Show premieres on most FOX stations Monday September 12, and guest who the titular host snagged as her first guest? It’s an obvious choice. Mr. Simon Cowell.

People reports that the reunion marks the first time that Jennifer will sit down with the former American Idol judge since she left season 3 in 7th place in 2004.

American Idol viewers may recall that Simon was NOT a big fan of Jennifer Hudson during her run on the show. He criticized everything from the way she dressed, to her personality. He basically called her unlikeable. Nineteen year old Fantasia was his favorite to win that season, and indeed, she eventually took the crown. Not that she was unworthy. Season 3 was marked by the “Three Divas” which included Jennifer, Fantasia and LaToya London.

Jennifer’s elimination in 7th place was considered Idol’s most shocking boot to date. She exited the show ahead of 16 year old crooner, John Stevens. and Hawaiian pop singer, Jasmine Trias. Jennifer didn’t become a superstar immediately, but after she blew audiences away in the role of Effie White in the film adaption of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, the star has continued to shine.

Later, Simon sheepishly apologized to Jennifer, admitting his initial negative assessment was oh so wrong. Here’s hoping he apologizes some more when he sits on her coach in a few weeks. Having said that, Simon wasn’t wrong about Fantasia. While she’s not as famous as Jennifer, she’s a highly respected singer in R&B circles. She just finished filming her role as Celie in the film adaption of the Broadway musical The Color Purple. Maybe when Fantasia is out promoting the movie, she and Jennifer can their own reunion.

The talk show’s premiere will coincide with Jennifer’s 41st birthday.  filled with celebratory moments and big surprises.

Jennifer previously revealed that Simon would be her dream guest, telling Dallas station KERA-TV that it would be “awesome” to reunite with him.

“I think it would be so interesting,” the EGOT winner told the outlet in August. “Idol was 18 years ago so why not? I think people will be interested who’ve followed my journey for 20 years. See us sit down and see us have a conversation. I think that would be awesome to do.”

“And then it’s like, uh-huh! Now Simon, you’re sitting on my couch!” she added. “So he’s on my wish list, among many others.”

Besides the reunion, Simon will be promoting the America’s Got Talent finale which airs on NBC Tuesday September 13 and Wednesday September 14. Simon, the creator of AGT also sits on the judges panel.
