American Idol Renewed for Season 24 (Nine on ABC)

It’s official. ABC/Disney announced on Friday (May 9) that it has renewed American Idol for season 24, the ninth season on the network.

Last week, Ryan Seacrest announced during the Sunday and Monday broadcasts that auditions were open for the new season. Hopeful singers can upload their audition clips at abc.com/shows/american-idol/auditions.

Hopefuls must be born on or between June 2, 1996 and February 15, 2011.

The network has also picked up a new season of America’s Funniest Home Videos, Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Shark Tank for next season. They join the previously renewed Dancing With the Stars and The Golden Bachelor for the 2025-26 season.

ABC has yet to renew The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. ABC is skipping the usual summer run of The Bachelorette. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter no decisions have been made on renewals for The Bachelor or The Bachelorette yet.

Ratings for American Idol have been steady all season. The last two episodes, Ladies Night on Sunday May 4 and Judges Song Contest, Monday May 5 garnered some of the best numbers of the season. The Sunday edition notched a 0.6 in the key 18-49 ratings demo and 5.17M viewers. The Monday edition DESTROYED The Voice Playoffs Part 2 episode. Idol garnered 0.4 in the key demo and 4.28M viewers. The Voice only nabbed a 0.2 in the demo and 2.57M Viewers. It’s worth noting that American Idol is airing LIVE shows alongside viewer voting. The Voice lives with voting don’t begin until May 12, when comparing the two shows will truly be apples to apples.

Although broadcast ratings have fallen drastically over the years, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, and other competition reality shows have performed consistently weill for the network. Back in 2018, when ABC rebooted Idol, their ratings goal for the premiere was a 1.8 in the key demo, which the show achieved. Streaming TV is decimating network and cable television quickly. Probably, the traditional network will phase out for streaming. Dancing with the Stars, which airs 100% live over 10 weeks, simulcasts on Disney+. I wonder if American Idol will eventually simulcast their live shows on the Disney streamer?

Meanwhile, American Idol has only three episodes left this season. Sunday May 11 and Sunday May 12 are Disney themed episodes. Then, the Top 3 competes on the three-hour finale on Sunday May 18 when the show crowns a new winner.
