American Idol Ratings Lead Sunday Night, But Suffer Steep Drop

AMERICAN IDOL - "101 (Auditions)" - The gold standard of all music competition series, “American Idol,” will make its highly anticipated return to television as superstar judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie set out on a journey across the nation to discover a new crop of inspiring talent with a touch of Disney magic, as it premieres its first season at its new home on America’s network, The ABC Television Network, SUNDAY, MARCH 11 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT). (ABC/Eric Liebowitz) KATY PERRY

American Idol ratings led the night in adults 18-49 at 1.8, but dropped a half point from its premiere last Sunday. It stayed even with Monday’s March 12 episode.

Although the show won the night for ABC, that full half point drop is worrisome. Granted, the NCAA Basketball tournament is now in full swing. But I doubt there’s much audience overlap. If the numbers settle in at around 1.8 or so, the Idol should be safe for another season. But that remains to be seen.
