American Idol 2023: Luke Bryan Hints that “Big Stars” will fill in for Lionel Richie and Katy Perry on May 7
Next Sunday, May 7 the American Idol Top 7 will sing in front of the judges. But WHICH judges? Luke Bryan will be there. But Lionel Richie and Katy Perry have a major conflict. Both are scheduled to perform for the concert for King Charles III’s coronation on the same day on the grounds of Windsor Castle in England. Other than judging via hologram at 1 am in the morning UK time, the two judges will have to skip the episode.
But now, Luke Bryan hints at who MIGHT take Lionel and Katy’s place on the panel.
Luke says “big time” stars will take Lionel and Katy’s place
ET’s Cassie DiLaura caught up with the country singer on Friday ahead of his headlining performance at Stagecoach in the California desert and teased that big time music artists who have sold tons of records will be filling in for the duo.
“It’s big time. It’s big time,” Luke shared with ET. “The people that we have filling in, contestants have used their songs many, many times. A lot more than mine!”
However he couldn’t share more details on account that “he did not want to get kicked off Idol. ” It’s top secret! Fans will just have to wait and see who will join Luke on the judge’s table while Katy and Lionel take part in a historic weekend.
Katy is grateful to perform for his Majesty
Earlier in the week, on the Idol red carpet, Katy shared with ET, “I’m grateful I get to go. I met His Majesty to be a few years ago and he named me as one of the ambassadors to his organization, The British Asian Trust, which is an organization that helps fight to end child trafficking,” Katy shared. “So I’m also an ambassador for UNICEF, and it really aligned with my values. That’s mostly why I’m going, to be an ambassador and to say, ‘Hey, this is me from the USA.’ No, but it’s so cool.”
Although they were already booked on American Idol for May 7, how could Lionel and Katy say no? Singing for a once in a lifetime British coronation is a big deal. It’s not so bad for the show. They can brag that their judges are coronation concert worthy, while engaging in some fun stunt casting.

Maybe host Ryan Seacrest will reveal the guest judges when American Idol airs coast to coast on Sunday April 30 (Rock n Roll Hall of Fame theme with mentor Adam Lambert) and the Judges Song Contest themed episode on Monday May 1. Both nights begin at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on ABC.
