American Idol Judge Katy Perry Set to Host 2017 MTV Video Music Awards

Katy Perry is set to host and perform at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, MTV announced today (June 27). Nominations for the yearly award ceremony were announced earlier this week.

The pop singer is one of the most nominated artists, with five noms including Best Pop, Best Direction and Best visual Effects awards for “Chained to the Rhythm,” plus Best Art Direction for “Bon Appetit” and Best Collaboration with Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams and Big Sean for “Feels.”

“I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids,” Katy said in a statement.

“We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs,” said Bruce Gillmer, head of music and music talent of Viacom’s global entertainment group. “She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history.”

As most of you know, Katy and her $25 million dollar salary are confirmed to sit on the American Idol judges panel when it return to TV via ABC this spring. Ryan Seacrest finally signed on the dotted line to host. Additionally, there are a slew of artists ABC is considering to join Katy on the panel, including Charlie Puth, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. It’s possible Keith Urban will make a return.

The MTV Music Video Awards air August 27 at 8 p.m., live from the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
