American Idol Audition: Named after 90s singer-songwriter, Alanis Morissette, Alanis Sophia Lives up to her name

Nineteen year-old Alanis Sophia originally from Puerto Rico, and now resides in Florida, starts off her American Idol audition which aired on Sunday (Feb 28) by telling the judges that her mom had her at the same age she is now. She goes on to say that mom was in a bit of a rough place at the time, but 90’s singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette saved her. And for that reason, mom named her daughter after her favorite singer.

Judge Katy Perry claims that Alanis was the reason why she got into music as well. In a sweet nod to old school Idol, Alanis sings with an American Idol toy microphone that her mom gave her as a child. The words “You’re going to Hollywood!” are displayed on it.

Did you think her name was the most interesting thing about this teen? You thought wrong. I covered Alanis in my season preview and she’s someone I got really interested in and not just because she’s got an amazing voice. Her story is very interesting.

Alanis shares her story

Alanis “Sophia” Gonzalez was the runner-up on Season 1 of La Voz Kids. Her incredibly powerful voice caught the coaches’ attention from her first note. She then went on to sign with Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Label as a Latin country artist. She worked with several producers and didn’t really have a clear direction. She wrote over 100 songs, none of which were released due to this lack of direction, and they parted ways.

La Voz Kids Audition – Alanis Sophia

If you listen closely, there is a cool nasally quality to Alanis’s tone when she belts Demi Lovato’s “Anyone” in her audition. So, I can see the slight country-ness that Big Machine must have seen in Alanis. The vocal isn’t perfect, but she shines on her belts. She missed a few of the low notes if I’m being honest, but Alanis has TONE for days. As I said in my season preview, I am a tone searcher. I love singers who have tones that stand out. Alanis is one of those singers.

After Alanis performs, her mom enters the audition room, at which point both mom and Katy are in tears. “She is the best we’ve seen today,” Katy gushes. Alanis is not only likable, but she is a threat in this competition.

I love making comparisons and I’m going to do it again. Her voice gives me shades of Avril Lavigne and Natalie Imbruglia. Here’s a pop rock original on Tik Tok from Alanis. And, listen to a cover of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away” which I suggest she does on the show as it’s a stunning cover.
