Aaron Kelly – Long and Winding Road – Very bland.
Katie Stevens – Let it Be – Good live
Andrew Garcia – Can’t Buy Me Love – Wasn’t as good as last week–standing with the guitar, changed it up just a little bit.
Mike Lynche – Eleanor Rigby – Orchestra on the floor with him–soulful vibe
Crystal Bowersox – Come Together – Played guitar, A horn-player on stage with her
Tim Urban – All My Loving – Played guitar
Casey James – Jealous Guy – Played guitar – No band – with cello very acoustic…
Siobhan Magnus – Across the Universe – Sang it straight, no big note. Piano player on stage, sat on a stool. Wild outfit

  1. Aaron’s singing The Long and Winding Road??? As an Archie fan, I am speechless, just speechless…!!!!!

  2. okay

    aaron.. david archie!!
big mike didnt hear my prayers, eleanor rigby!! thanks…

oh well, we’ll see how it goes

  3. Mike, Crystal, Casey, Lee – at least interesting choices – the rest predictable or not looking good to me.

  4. Hey Jude…. with bagpipes? Oh boy.

    I don’t see any WTF choices… so that’s a plus.

  5. Out of all the songs they could have chosen, they chose the Season 7 playlist. OK, so there are three that are “new” to Idol, but you’d think that with all of the Lennon-McCartney songs, they’d avoid the Season 7 selections. Can’t wait to see the comparisons.

  6. lol at these contestants singing songs that other contestants “made their own”. They never learn do they? Also – bagpipes? Really??

  7. God, katie will butcher Let It Be. Tim singing “All my Loving” GAH. I already want to mute the TV.

These are some of the most iconic Beatles songs! These are all some of the most WELL KNOWN. I was kinda hoping someone would pick something a little more off beat and not ones that were the biggest hits. This will be a TRAINWRECK.

I dunno if I can handle watching them butcher them. I was worried in season 7 and we had some great moments, but that year had better talent. With this bunch….

    I’m worried.

  8. Oh no he didnt… Goatboy you have gone too far. Archunot! Be gone with you,

  9. I though Casey’s pick of “Jealous Guy” was off the beaten track. It was the only title I didn’t easily recognize, so I had to look it up on youtube. Not a common song! I’m glad to see he’s doing something with a little slower pace…

  10. Way to avoid the Archie comparisons Aaron! First Cook then Kris and now Archie. Dang. Who’s next?

  11. Yikes, yikes, yikes. Katie’s is the worst, maybe of the season (way to give “Against All Odds” a run for its money!). Let It Be invites comparisons to Brooke White AND Kris Allen, two of the most emotive performers in AI history, on a very emotive song. The pageant-bot criticisms are just going to take off from here…

Not particularly an Archie fan, so I’ll admit that TLWR isn’t that troublesome. (If he’d picked something that strongly defined like Imagine, I’d absolutely agree, but not as an article that otherwise sits as part of Archie’s canon). Slightly more troublesome is “Come Together”, also known as the song Carly Smithson killed, but Crystal could do more than well enough to make that a non-issue. Eleanor Rigby shouldn’t invite comparisons to Cook, as Cook had that on a distinct arrangement, though I still don’t like the idea of Big Mike singing it (I don’t know. Intuitive thing).

  12. Katie… LET IT BE? oh man. I don’t see that ending well.

    Aaron… oh Aaron.

Intrigued by Casey and interested in Crystal’s take. I really want to hear Siobhan. Lee… WTF? But he’s closing so watch it be amazing.

Tim… bring the lulz! Pretty please?

Big Mike… um okay, if you say so.

Someone needs to have a moment tonight. We desperately need a moment.

  13. Katie shouldn’t have picked Let it Be after Kris Allen did such a moving performance earlier this season.

Excited for Lee, Siobhan and especially Crystal singing my favourite Beatles song. Shame about the predictable choices though.

  14. I though Casey’s pick of “Jealous Guy” was off the beaten track. It was the only title I didn’t easily recognize, so I had to look it up on youtube. Not a common song! I’m glad to see he’s doing something with a little slower pace…

I know of “Jealous Guy”. Great song. Not a Beatles song, exactly. Just a Lennon song off his “Imagine” album. I do agree it was slightly off the beaten track and I give him props for that because it isn’t exactly an iconic Beatles song. Right now Casey’s is the only one I’m looking forward to.

  15. Video packages featured the contestants talking about the contestant who went next. Lee and Andrew are good friends.

So Crystal talked about Tim? LOL

  16. Wow…really? Stupid song choices for many of them. Oh Aaron…why? David Archuleta already did a great job on that song only two seasons ago. Even though I wouldn’t say David’s version makes the song untouchable for Idol, I doubt Aaron can sing it better. I like Aaron, though, so I hope he does well.
Katie and Mike made even worse choices. Katie does not have the emotional power to sing “Let It Be,” and I really am not looking forward to hearing such a beautiful song sung in Katie’s cold, emotionless manner. And Mike…I still can’t forget David Cook’s version of “Eleanor Rigby,” and I don’t know if Mike will be able to bring anything new to it…

  17. seriously, apparently Aaron’s music education is very similar to Ramielle’s. It consists of knowing songs only if you’ve heard AI contestants sing them in previous seasons. Didn’t Ramielle get voted out in Top 9 too?

Also, wow on Lee getting the pimp spot. They are working hard to make the “dark horse” thing happen, aren’t they?

  18. Tim is getting all my lovin tonight haha.

And I loved Carly’s Come Together.

  19. Crystal disappoints with her song choice again. She’s better then this.

  20. @chearts77: This is Lee’s first time going last in the top 12. Actually they’ve been doing a pretty good job of spreading it around so far (Crystal, Siobhan, Aaron, and now Lee).

  21. Really? Kelly is going to sing a song that Archie performed brilliantly on Top 11? What an idiot. Heh. Archie’s back tomorrow. Hee.

MJ, is this the performance order?

  22. Arghhh .. how predictable most of those are .. especially Aaron and The Long & Winding Road

and Let It Be and Hey Jude are way over done

.. and then we get friggin bagpipes .. as someone who lives just an hour from the Scotish border and who spent many a holiday and school trip there having the sound of the bagpipes thown at you at all the touristy spots .. I get a headache just thinking about them .. lol

Wonder if Mike will turn Eleanor Rigby into a love song?

Come Together is quite predictable for Chrystal so she should do a good job of that and I’m interested to hear Casey sing Jealous Guy as that’s one of my favourite songs (both by Lennon and Bryan Ferry) .. but it’s not a Lennon & McCartney song .. it was written by Lennon alone

Can’t wait to see Tim shake his mop top hair like Paul McCartney to All My Loving .. lol

  23. seriously, apparently Aaron’s music education is very similar to Ramielle’s. It consists of knowing songs only if you’ve heard AI contestants sing them in previous seasons. Didn’t Ramielle get voted out in Top 9 too?

Heh, maybe. Though Ramiele’s slide felt faster to me, for some reason, even though I can’t actually say that her choices are worse. (I’d take comparisons to Nadia, LaToya, and Carrie before I’d attempt Cook, Kris, and Archie, at the very least because of the nature of the fanbases).

  24. Could some of these people BE MORE CLUELESS??? UGGGGG. (Seriously. Aaron. STOP. I’ll forgive Katie if she’s good, but there’s a 99.9% chance that she won’t. The difference between Mike Lynch’s version of Eleanor Rigby and DC’s will be astronomical.)
Very, very, VERY excited for Across the Universe, the fiona Apple cover is one of my favorites.
Casey, Lee, Crystal, and Andrew are kind of intriguing. Tim needs to stare. a lot. and all the girls will go crazy cause “he’s singing it to meeeeeee!”

  25. I was kinda hoping someone would pick something a little more off beat and not ones that were the biggest hits.

Yeah but if they go with more unknown songs, they’ll get eaten alive for not appealing to the audience by singing something recognizable. I do agree that reprising the Season 7 song list is a REALLY bad idea though!

  26. Lee Dewyze – Hey Jude – Guy with Bagpipes dressed in a kilt.

Wonder if Adam can play the bagpipes .. would be hilarious if it was him in his glamkilt and spikey sporran … (joking)

  27. Still Lee two last half hour performances in a row. All my tracking of polls and forums have shown he has lost just about all the buzz he got from last week. I think TPTB know this and are desperately trying to establish him as THE guy to be in the Top 3.

  28. I think people are going to complain about Crystal making predictable song choices no matter what she picks. Midnight Train to Georgia and Come Together have nothing similar as songs, yet they are both obvious crystal choices lol?

  29. Good choices by Crystal, Casey, Siobhan, and Lee. I wanted Crystal to do In My Life, but she needed to up the pace a bit and “Come Together” is perfect.

I don’t think it matters what Tim does because I’ve accepted he’s going into the final 3 and possibly final 2 by the hair on his chinny chin chin.

I think unless Katie and Mike are AMAZING, one of them is gone after tonight, strictly based on performance order.

Yep! I’ll never forget that picture when she was eliminated with her sobbing head in KLC’s arm pit.

  31. i kinda sense big mike will do a different version of eleanor rigby from david cook… it is possible to avoid comparisons. but that song was special to me, it like my first with david cook. like a special memory that somebody else will touch.

  32. BOO! What’s up with their songs choices? I was hoping for less common songs. MJ suggested some great picks that haven’t been sung on Idol before, yet it seems that they all gravitated towards some of the better known Beatles songs – with the exception of Casey, whose song choice, “Jealous Guy,” I admit I have never heard before.

In fact, Katie and Lee are throwing out two of the most overdone Beatles songs of all time. Yes, “Let It Be” and “Hey Jude” are amazing songs, but I’m tired of hearing them covered over and over – and I am a HUGE Beatles fan.

Exited for: Crystal, Siobhan, Casey. Lee’s, Mike’s, and Andrew’s should be okay. Tim’s will be mindblowingly horrible, I’m sure, and Aaron’s will put me to sleep. Reserving judgement on Katie, who might pull it off – despite the song being performed too many times by better singers – if she reels in the pitch problems.

  33. Not the songs I wanted to hear tonight but some could turn out quite interesting.

  34. I think people are going to complain about Crystal making predictable song choices no matter what she picks. Midnight Train to Georgia and Come Together have nothing similar as songs, yet they are both obvious crystal choices lol?

    ITA

I think unless Katie and Mike are AMAZING, one of them is gone after tonight, strictly based on performance order.

I’d bet on Katie. She seems to be in a far weaker position in the competition than Mike. You never know, though.

  35. kcostell, you’re right. I am aware of that. Lee had the “pimp” spot in the semi’s (2nd week, I believe). I’m just thinking of someone else who hasn’t had it at all this season yet. Just wondering when they will give it to him. :) (no, I’m not talking about Tim – LOL).

  36. Ugh, SERIOUSLY? I was hoping for lesser common songs, like “Don’t Let Me Down” or “You’re Gonna Lose that Girl” or “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” or “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” (and, of course, even those are pretty popular). Instead, Katie and Lee are throwing out two of the most overdone Beatles songs of all time. Yes, they’re amazing, but I’m tired of hearing them covered over and over (and I am a HUGE Beatles fan).

EXACTLY. I mean they are so freaking overdone. If someone was doing “Yesterday” I’d probably not even bother watching. As it is right now I’m already wanting to burn the spoilers from my eyesight.

I just can’t see anyone changing this up much(maybe some Bagpipes is a bit interesting?) But GAH. None of these contestants have any personal style with songs. They just sing them straight, and they’re nothing but a horrific karaoke version at best. If you’re going to do these classic of Beatles songs, it better at least be somewhat different.

  37. Only hardcore Archie or AI fans remember or CARE that he once did “The Long and Winding Road.” To the short attention span casual audience, it won’t matter one bit. Now if he butchers it, I don’t doubt the judges will remind the audience Archie did it better, but all this handwringing and marking territory (if possible I’d expect AI fans to pee a literal circle around certain songs done by their favorite) is kind of silly.

  38. The song list might not have been that big, though. Remeber Season 7, where there were only like 25 songs on the list? I bet they just recycled it.

  39. Oh dear Gawd Bowowowowser is going to mangle “Come Together.”

Where is Kris Allen when you need him???

  40. As is usual with American Idol and fans freaking out over song choices.

In this case, I agree, but it’s not that black and white for me. I’d at least suggest to a contestant they avoid material that defined a contestant well on the show, or were their breakout performances. But marking off all songs by prior popular contestants is a bit extreme.

  41. Crazy thought, maybe Lee was the best and they felt he deserved the pimp spot? Lord knows he isnt the first that got it so close to the previous shot at it..

  42. Is Katie really going to sing the same song Kris sang like three weeks ago? I get that they are all doing the songs that past idols have done (most of those have been sung before either last year or Season 7) but a few weeks ago?

  43. I sort of fear for Crystal. Not because she won’t be good but because they’ve got her in the middle of the pack, she’s expected to do well, and if she’s great but the judges don’t RAVE about her I could see her fans getting complacent.

Of course I also assume the judges would save her, too.

  44. Jealous Guy? Way to cheat the theme! That’s a Lennon only song!

But, I’ll admit it could be interesting, Collective Soul’s version of that song is really, really good and it could fit Casey perfectly.

I’m a bit underwhelmed by Crystal’s choice, for me Carly still owns it on the idol stage and other people will compare it to the overrated version of Kris. It’s better to have low expectations I guess.

I’m intrigued to hear Siobhan’s take on Across the Universe, I love that song, maybe I’ll get back on the Magnus train.

Overall, the song choices are really underwhelmed.

  45. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Jealous Guy. Kudos for picking a lesser known song cause the other ones have been done to death.

  46. I really don’t know about Katie doing Let It Be either. Jennifer Hudson when she did it on the Haiti special really messed me up for anyone on the show singing it. Katie better bring the emotion and soul

  47. I don’t care if they repeat songs that have been done by other good Idols. Never know when they might have a break through performance. The only songs I think should be off limits are those that have been sung by more than 3 contestants. Three strikes, you’re out!

  48. Oh awesome, just what I need, yet another version of “Come Together”. Blech to that song. Lee ought to be pretty good on Hey Jude. I am most looking forward to seeing what Siobhan does, I think. Not that I’m a big fan, but after the debacle last week it will be interesting to see if she can get her momentum back.

  49. Now if he butchers it, I don’t doubt the judges will remind the audience Archie did it better, but all this handwringing and marking territory (if possible I’d expect AI fans to pee a literal circle around certain songs done by their favorite) is kind of silly.

That is why I come here. The comments are brilliant and so entertaining. LMAO!!!!! I love your take on idol Niall. “if possible I’d expect AI fans to pee a literal circle around certain songs done by their favorite”. That is the best line evah!
