Randy Jackson On Season 9 – The Tonight Show with Jay Leno – VIDEO

Randy Jackson was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last last night. Notable comment–Randy says this season falls somewhere in the middle, and then namechecked a bunch of other Seasons -one, two, three and eight–as good years.

I would say, the “greatest season evah” meme is history…

But Randy defends the season–he says that the indie vibe is good for Idol this year, and is producing good talent like Lee Dewyze, Crystal Bowersox, Casey James and Siobhan Magnus.

  1. One, two, and three as good years? Seriously, S1 was the beginning of the show, but as a comparative season it was dreck. OK, when it was great it was great. But when it wasn’t, it was more amusing watching people dissect kittens. It produced four even watchable performers, one of whom (Christina) got an early boot, Justin not actually being that interesting, and then (thank god) Tamyra and Kelly. I don’t even care that much for S2 and S3, though I could mentally justify S3 as a compelling season.

Further, S8? It produced perhaps the best overall top tier the show has had, followed closely by S7. So it deservedly gets a lot of love for that. But as a season… oh, infuriating. Of course, Mr. Jackson played a big part in making that come true, so I’m sure he wouldn’t recognize the truth of that. But the production was an infuriating, idiotic mess, and it was often very unpleasant, even at the very end.

    And no love for S7 and/or S5?

Oh, wait, you’re telling me Randy only paid attention for the first three years anyway, at best? Might explain things…

  2. Whaaa!?!?! Way off in terms of the best years, imo, dawg! If I had to rank:

    Best (in no particular order):

    S1, S5, S7, S8

    Middle:

    S2, S4

    Worst:

    S3, S6, S9

  3. Then again, it would be extremely unwise for Randy to say that this year ranks among the worst of all time. So yeah, no real surprise that he’s upgrading it to “middle” instead.

  4. What is the dawg on? If we’re being objective, I would say in retrospect seasons 5 and 7 were technically probably the best, although how you define ‘best’ is arguable. Most successful winners? 1 and 4 probably. Most diverse overall crop? 4, 5 and 7, I’d say. Best black divas? 3 and 6. The list goes on. On a personal level, I most enjoyed watching seasons 6 and 7, but that’s my opinion. As much as I love Kradison, the producers last year were infuriating, and so many people slipped through the cracks who shouldn’t have in the semifinals.

  5. Best–5&7
Elliott Yamin had me enthralled with his brilliant vocals.
David Cook had me anticipating brilliant songs.
The other players in both those seasons were fun, diverse and mostly talented.

  6. Ahem. Oh yeah. We’re buying that. It is an exciting season.

    Lee

That is my story and I am sticking to it.

  7. I agree that it’s not likely Randy is going to admit this season sucking until after the fact. It wouldn’t make sense. As it is, I think it’s progress that he’s not touting this season as “the best ever”. LOL.

For me, I’d say 5 & 7 were the best and while I realize there’s no consensus, it’s pretty recognized that those were seen as strong seasons. I like 1 since it’s the first and it brought us Kelly, but in retrospect it was pretty crappy.

  8. Season 5 & 7 were the best, hands down, imo. I can’t believe he didn’t even mention them…

  9. How quickly he forgets S7. I think it was mere oversight. He’s promoted S7 in the past. Heck, Simon said S7 was “one of the great finales.” S1 (only because of Kelly and the novelty factor), S2 (only because of the drama and suspense at the finale), S3 (obviously because those beaches could saaaaang), and S7 (because nobody brought it like the 2 Davids…they reinvigorated the TV ratings and had America talking about a real horse race from start to finish)…merit my attention. S8 was pretty good, as well. Better than S4,S5 and S6. Ymmv.

  10. For many of us, S8 was the only time in AI history that this show became “must see” TV. I liked S1 and S7 but didn’t really care about the outcome or what happened to the singers after the show ended.

  11. I can go along with the season 3 love from Randy. That year takes a lot of abuse but when you compare Fantasia, Jennifer, Diana, and Latoya to the girls this season, I’d say S3 was the ultimate “girls year,” something they clearly wanted for season 9. You knew those four would always bring it, even if it wasn’t your cup of tea.

  12. I would say, the “greatest season evah” meme is history…

So is “this is the girls’ year” meme, which IIRC was started by Mr. Jackson. Did he happen to address that issue? I’m going to pass on watching the clips, two of my least favorite people talking on TV is not my idea of a good time.

Oh, and one more time, it’s Lee DeWyze!

  13. I think Season 3 was good only in that it showed the world a future Oscar Winner, Jennifer Hudson. Season 8 was the best season I ever watched of Idol. It containted some of my favorite performances.

  14. Season 3 was a strong Girls year but a very weak guys year.

Jennifer, Fantasia, Latoya, Diana were all strong with powerful voices. I will say that for Season 3. Season 3 though, Jennifer went too early. Imagine if the Final was between Jennifer and Fantasia ! OMG! That would have been memorable.

  15. Randy has to promote the show and praise the talent for the season to keep people watching. So I do not think he will really talk honestly about this season until Season 9 is over.

  16. I haven’t taken anything Randy said seriously for some time now. He hasn’t been making useful critiques for years, and talks mostly nonsense when I hear him talk about the show. It looks to me he just say what the producers want him to say, and I would suspect on the show he is the one doing the bidding of the producers, helping to put forward the contestants the producers wanted for the show (yup, I do think he is probably the one amongst all the judges most responsible for the indie girl theme this year, so it is not surprising he is defending them).

  17. I still dream about Season 7 and I really have never been able to let it go. Definitely the most special season for me, the only season up until that point I even cared about buying concert tickets and there I was, driving the 11 hour drive to Tulsa on the last day of the tour to see them all one last time…

I was so broken up S7 ended, I never really fully appreciated how incredible Season 8 was until this season. I find myself on youtube looking up Kradam videos a lot now to relive last year’s amazing season.

This year is crap. It’s really made me appreciate seasons past.

  18. Season 5 hands down the best season IMO. I think tv ratings and tour attendance were also best season 5’s year but correct me if I’m wrong(I know someone will)

  19. Season 5 was the best TV to me. I loved Kelly season 1, and the premise of the show, but I barely remember any of her competitors. I enjoyed most of the rest of the seasons. Seasons 7 & 8 are probably tied for my second favorite. I’ve never actually hated a season of Idol. I’ve always found some measure of entertainment value.

I enjoyed Season 6 a lot because that was my first full season here at MJ’s (I found this place during the Season 5 tour). So, I had tremendous fun snarking with the MJ folk.

  20. S5 best ever hands down! I do think as stated above it had the best tour numbers. They had to add dates at the last minute. There were so many fun personalities. The guys played in clubs together after tour shows… cool stuff. And then the strong first cd sales for Daughtry, Taylor, Kellie, Bucky and Elliott… wow.

  21. Gotta go with season 5 & 7 as the best so far. What is he smoking?
Season 3, 6 and 9 are the least best ;)

  22. Best seasons: 2, 5, 7
    Worst seasons: 3, 6, 9
    Everything else was ‘meh’.
I think season 9 is fighting to become the Worst season ever. Worst contestants, worst mentors, worst themes.
Was Paula the brains of this outfit and we didn’t realize it?

  23. I will say that for Season 3. Season 3 though, Jennifer went too early. Imagine if the Final was between Jennifer and Fantasia ! OMG! That would have been memorable.

Thing is, at the time Jennifer wasn’t all that. She was wildly inconsistent. The shock at the time wasn’t that she was voted off before the final 2, it was that she was coming off a good week and seemed to be improving. Plus it was the week where she and Fantasia were the bottom two. It’s easy after an Oscar, a Grammy, and several other awards to say “she should have been in the finale,” but at the time more people thought the finale was going to be LaToya-Fantasia, and Jennifer was struggling to find her footing.

    Bingo

  25. My ranking just on what I enjoyed the most would be S4, S1, S5, S3, S9, S7, S2, S6, with S8 being the worst.

  26. In my (very unpopular) opinion on which seasons were the most enjoyable.
    1. Season 8 was my favorite to watch, because I ALWAYS found it interesting. And I had many favorites. (Pretty crappy finale though)
    2. Season 6 got me hooked on Idol. I know almost everyone hates season 6, but I LOVED it. I loved Blake, Chris, and Phil, and I still think Melinda is the best vocalist to come off of idol.
    3. I usually claim season 7 to be my favorite but really, it’s just that my favorite contestant was in season 7. The middle of the season was REALLY boring for me. But I still loved it as a whole.
    4. I really liked Season 4, especially Bo and Carrie. It was one of my favorite finales. And it’s when the show really changed from searching for an “artist” rather than the best vocalist.
    5. Season 2 was pretty good, and the finale was exciting. I don’t really care about any of the contestants from season 2 now though.
    6. Season 5. Yeah I know everyone loves season 5. But I honestly didn’t really like it. I hated Taylor (I don’t anymore) and Katharine. I thought it was the most unpredictable season though.
    7. Season 1 was terrible. But Kelly and Tamyra were on it.
    8. I hated Season 3.

Oh, and not sure about Season 9. It’s not that great, but I’d agree with Randy in the fact that it’s in the middle.

  27. I think Randy “forgets” Season 7 because that was the year that he (and Simon) turned out to look like an ass (well, even more) by betting against the eventual winner, Cookie.

  28. Best: S7 followed by S5
    Good: S4, S8, and S2
    Okay: S1
    Weak: S3
    Blah: S6
    The Pits: Season 9

Was Paula the brains of this outfit and we didn’t realize it?

She was incoherent but it may be that on a viseral level she knew raw talent when she saw it.

  29. People underrate this season. My prediction : Lee and Crystal will sell more albums than Kradam. Siobhan will be the new Daughtry or Smithson.

  30. Best (in no particular order):

    S1, S5, S7, S8

    Middle:

    S2, S4

    Worst:

    S3, S6, S9

I would go with this, except that I would put S3 up in the “middle” category.

Randy does nothing but spout producer-written pr.

  31. I can go along with the season 3 love from Randy. You knew those four would always bring it, even if it wasn’t your cup of tea.

I liked Amy Adams Season 3 also. I thought she left too soon.

Was it after this year that they instituted the six-boys, six-girls format? Because they were worried that they’d get an all-girl-top-group thing going?

Seems ironic, now, doesn’t it? heh.

  32. Was it after this year that they instituted the six-boys, six-girls format? Because they were worried that they’d get an all-girl-top-group thing going?

Seems ironic, now, doesn’t it? heh.

Yep. Right after season 3 they went to six guys and six girls. Now they WANT a girls season and can’t get one to save their lives.

  33. IMO – Best seasons: 2, 4, 7 (best first)
    Middling: 5, 1,
    Worst: 6, 3, 8 (worst first)

This season for me started as next to the worst, after season 6, but this week redeems itself a bit- it could move up.

Of course Randy would like seasons 1, 2 and 3. They presented a lot of R&B, Soul, Motown weeks with types of singers he loves and we haven’t seen much lately. Season 8 – maybe because it wants viewers to think it’s still relevant.
