American Idol 9 Top 11 Theme – Teen Idol Week

Formula 1 theme - drum cover
Formula 1 theme - drum cover

UPDATE: Check out the press release:

On Tuesday, March 23 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), the Top 11 finalists (Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban) return to the IDOL stage to perform in a Teen Idols-themed week.

iTunes will have a list of songs up soon that will give us a better idea of what the theme is about.

Somebody from AINow.org just tweeted that next week the Top 11 Idols will be singing songs from Teen Idols.

Don’t ask me what that means, because I have no idea.

When I get more information, I’ll post it here.

PS: If this is really the theme, it’s a really stupid idea.

  1. Bring on the Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber tunes…Crystal is thinking, what the hell did I get myself into?

On a positive note, Andrew can break out the Britney cover he’s been saving.

  2. It’s hard to know if it means that they have to sing songs from teen idols of this generation or any artist that had success when he/she was still a teenager.

As it’s often the case, contestants who are the closest to the theme like Katie, Aaron and Tim could have a hard time because of the comparisons.
I think it could be a fun week granted the contestants get creative.

  3. I’m thinking probably music from Justin bieber, Miley cyrus, Jonas brothers, Christina aguilara and Britney spears(late 90’s early 2000’s stuff) and other shit like that.

I have a horrible suspicion that Andrew garcia is gonna do a “daring” and “amazing” arrangement of “baby one more time” (AKA rip off another youtube version) and take credit for it and the judges will lose there shit and call him amazing. *barf*

on another note, this is the first week I’m actually nervous for Crystal and Siobhan.

  4. According to the authoritative source that is wikipedia, “A teen idol is a celebrity who is widely idolized by teenagers; he or she is often young but not necessarily teenaged.”

They include older heartthrobs like Frankie Avalon, Ricky Nelson, Shaun Cassidy, as well as the new age princesses like Britney, Christina, Miley, and the boy bands like NKOTB, Backstreet, and NSync. Even the Beatles and Stones are considered Teen Idols, so I guess the theme is wide open. I’m kind of excited about this now. Someone sing “I Want it That Way”.

Dream Mentors: Britney Spears or Bobby Brown for the trainwreck possibilities.

  5. Katie NEEDS to sing JoJo next week. It is like fate.

I hope my lifelong dream of Shake Your Love being sung on idol will finally be fulfilled. Paige? Casey?

  6. Great suggestion gangreen! Debbie was a little before my time, but I love that song.

I’ve completely changed my mind. This theme is gold. Much better than another Motown or Country rehash.

  7. Didn’t I just read that at least one of the brothers from Hanson is a big Siobhan fan? They have some cool songs (besides just mmmmmbop)…maybe she’ll do one of their songs?

Nobody can complain that there isn’t a large number of songs or performers to choose from…a lot of them crap, of course, but there are some really good songs to be found

  8. girlygirl: What about Weird by Hanson? That would definitely fit her personality. Hanson’s got some pretty good music.

  9. If Taylor swift is aloud then I can see a shit load of that being performed if they allow more then 1 song by the same artist. Not complaining though, I flove me some t-swizzle. I think that Katie would probably pull off “teardrops on my guitar” and Crystal could do a great version of “should’ve said no” or “change”

  10. I think Paige should sing White Horse by t-swift

I think Andrew should do The Right Stuff by NKOTB

I think Didi should do Candy by Mandy Moore

Aaron should do Come on Over Baby by Christina Aguilera

  11. Omg….what a weird theme. They really are desperate to find the next Taylor or Miley huh? Crap…does this mean Katie and Tim may ace through next week? Aaron and Andrew could do well with this. Poor crystal.. She must be questioning this whole scene.

  12. gangreen: good choice for Andrew, but there’s no way he could pull it off like this guy (Ernie Halter, one of my favorite youtube artists…much superior to Garcia)

Gotta get to that paper now. Good night everyone!

  13. I hope no one does a cover of “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. Covers of that song have been floating around utube FOR YEARS! Although, Marty Casey’s dark arrangement of the song was pretty awesome! (from Rockstar-INXS)
Otherwise, it is going to sound like something you would hear at a high school talent show because everyone covers that silly song.

I agree, it is like THE choice for people trying to be hip and ironic about singing a 90’s pop cover, but it has been done to death.

  15. I was first a little concerned about Crystal, but if she chooses wisely (which I have no idea what that would be) and changes it up well with her spin it might be pretty amazing. I hope she got to talk to DC after the show tonight.

  16. I agree, it is like THE choice for people trying to be hip and ironic about singing a 90’s pop cover, but it has been done to death.

I agree but Garcia is gonna do it for sure and try to pass it off as his own, which I hope will serve backlash and get his fat ass eliminated.

I honestly don’t know wtf Sobiah is gonna sing but I think she’s gonna be epic with whatever she does.

  17. Teen Idols? Hmmm……

Andrew – Say My Name by Destiny’s Child (Not saying that it’ll be a good choice >_>)

That’s all I could come up with that I can see.

Wow, this will be an incredibly odd week. I have a strange feeling that Crystal or Siobhan would be able to kill with a David Archuleta song. I can kinda see Crystal doing A Little Too Not Over You, a little bit in the style of her Natural Woman performance (which is the one that made me a huge fan). Granted, Crush and ALTNOY are the only ones I really remember…..

I don’t really predict anyone doing too well except for, of course, Crystal and Siobhan. Maybe Aaron now that he can young it up, I have a feeling about him. I don’t think Katie will be able to do that, I have a feeling she’ll be a trainwreck despite this supposedly being her strength. I also have a feeling they made this week specifically for her, too.

I think this week will be very interesting. And honestly, I’m seeing a bit of a disco week season 8 style theme to this. It’s bad on paper, but it really separated the good from the bad. I have a same feeling kinda like Mariah Carey week in Season 7, when the guys (IMO) trounced the women despite it not working too well in their favor.

I tend to look at the positive. I strongly believe that a really terrible (or incredibly constricting) theme will bring out the best of the best. I have a feeling we’re in for some great standout performances that we wouldn’t see if it were a “WGWG week”, which may easily be to the advantage of most of the contestants. I hope I’m not the only one who made that connection.

I’m trying to think of more teen idols (as in, both literally “teen idols” and those who were teenagers when they started their careers). The ones that came to mind first were Beyonce, Britney Spears, and the boy bands of the 90s. I also thought Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and Miranda Cosgrove (and of the three, I only like Miranda).

Tim’s prob not leaving until after top 10. I have a funny suspicion that idol might want to keep him around to draw in the tweeners.

On the other hand. This is really bad for Katie. since she can’t sing pop songs at all. Also in danger is Andrew Garcia because the judges will compare it to that paula song again and say he took a step backwards.

Wonder what Crystal is going to do…? Siobhan’s prob doing Hanson :P

that would be interesting. I really am looking forward to her tho. I just cant imagine what she’d sound like lol:D

  20. Oh look a theme week catered to fetus with hair. His album drops next week. Coincidence, I think not…

Oh look a theme week catered to fetus with hair. His album drops next week. Coincidence, I think not…

By fetus with hair are you referring to a 6 year old lesbian by the name of Justin bieber?

  22. By fetus with hair are you referring to a 6 year old lesbian by the name of Justin bieber?

    That would be correct.

  23. I would like one of them to do an updated Ricky Nelson song. The term, ” teen idol” was first applied to him back in the late 50s and early 60s. At least that is what many music historians are saying. He would perform his music on the show and his album sales by teens would go through the roof.

He also was very talented. Check out You Tube and it will amaze you how good he was. He was a little before my time but he could sing.

  24. All I want is for someone to sing I Think I Love You by David Cassidy. Such an awesomely bad song, yet it’s catchy as hell.

  25. Ow. Maybe Alison Iraheta would be okay. She’s an idol, right? Jordin Sparks? Just not Justin Bieber, right? Isn’t Bieber a dirty word?

  26. I just hope it is not just recent teen idols but that a few of them decide to do updated and modern versions of some of the classic teen idols. That would be so cool and innovative.

  27. Why am I so bummed out looking at that photo without Lacey? (Or Alex/Katelyn/Lily, for that matter…)

I need to get over this show. hah

  28. I just hope it is not just recent teen idols but that a few of them decide to do updated and modern versions of some of the classic teen idols. That would be so cool and innovative.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Sorry but I really would like to hear some current music on the show and the contestants never choose it when they have the chance(example: top 8 itunes season 8 ) and if a bunch of god damn 1950 songs I’m srsly going to never watch AI again. JMO though

  29. I want Siobhan to sing some Hanson! First she’s a fan, secondly it would make me really happy. I’d vote for a full 2 hours for her if she busted out some “Mmmbop”…but hopefully not. They have much more excellent songs. Yes, I’m a fan. Yes, I’m probably too old to be a fan. But they’re amazing.

  30. Hope iTunes has another song list like they had for the Stones last week. You know they are going to throw some sort of limit on a theme like this.

  31. Wow, this season is really going nowhere isn’t it. Will they have a mentor for this? Justin Bieber is dropping a new album next week. :) And it gives them a chance to have Jordin and Archie back (doing covers of course). I think Justin Bieber will 100% be on results night though. Idol needs those younger viewers to balance out the Lee voters. ;)

I don’t think theme nights will matter. Everyone will do exactly what they’ve been doing for awhile

  32. It’s a stupid theme.

This is all about the pea brained execs who going all the way back to Season Six have wanted in on the Miley/Jonas/now Taylor Swift/Bieber train and OMG he or she is 16!!!

The irony is the contest itself has turned up singers that young who are yards better vocalists — Archie, Alison –then the huge teen hits. But this years cute teens Katie and Aaron don’t have either the performance chops of the two A’s, or the weird mesmerizing teen crowd appeal of a Bieber or Taylor.

The funny thing is, it will probably backfire. The older singers will find clever ways to do a take on Britney or the Osmonds or Hanson, and Katie will sing Miley or Taylor and still sound like she’s standing at the podium in a local high school fundraiser.

  33. Wow, this season is really going nowhere isn’t it. Will they have a mentor for this? Justin Bieber is dropping a new album next week. :) And it gives them a chance to have Jordin and Archie back (doing covers of course). I think Justin Bieber will 100% be on results night though. Idol needs those younger viewers to balance out the Lee voters. ;)

Justin is doing The View and Letterman, early next week, and has a concert in Chicago on results night. So we are spared Justin live.

  34. Teen idols… What, Lee grunges up a Donny Osmond classic? Are they serious? Which teen idol with a new (or old) record are they trying to showcase this week? Oy.

I’m still trying to figure out who qualifies as a teen idol. Frank Sinatra was a teen idol in my Mom’s time and the Beatles in their time. How about Elvis?

All I want is for someone to sing I Think I Love You by David Cassidy. Such an awesomely bad song, yet it’s catchy as hell.

It’s also highly nostalgic for people of a certain age. Ahem. It will probably be Tim and then he will never leave.

  35. Omg….what a weird theme. They really are desperate to find the next Taylor or Miley huh? Crap…does this mean Katie and Tim may ace through next week?

Not really! Remember: It’s the theme that has changed, not the performers. lol

Seriously, this theme can work just as well as any other, I think. For the strong singers and performers, it’s just a matter of sorting through songs to find one that has some substance beyond bubble gum — and there are lots that do — and then again singing it well in your own way.

And for the weak performers and highly unformed singers, they still have to do the same thing — but they won’t be any better at it this week than they have been in the past. They’ll be competing with everybody’s memory of the recorded versions of the songs, not live and perhaps weak versions, so they’re still running a big risk of being inferior karaoke or putting together a new version that’s just messed up, a la Under My Thumb.

I actually think this can be a good opportunity for people like Crystal and Siobhan, if they can just get their minds around it. Look at what his early version switching did for Andrew. He’s still running on the fumes of that, pretty much! On Rockstar, when Marty Casey did his version of Hit Me Baby One More Time, he got completely lionized, because when you sing well something that’s so far out of your box, and reveal the song that’s lurking under the bubble gum, it’s all good for you.

  36. Teen Idol? What? I wonder what the song choices will be – from Ricky Nelson to Disney-HSM3 type? I vote for someone doing a Hanson song. No Disney please, unless they are in costumes. Heh.

Is it really Teen Idols or Teen Angel, then Taylor Hicks will make an appearance? Haha! :P

    Sigh…

  37. Since most of these contestants emasculated the Rolling Stones, I expect that next week will sound like the music of Fetus Idols.

  38. Didn’t Constantine do ‘I think I love you’ one week? What theme was that week?

I wouldn’t be disappointed in the least to hear some Rick Springfield, but I don’t think this cast is who I’d like to take it one. He had some great songs!

  39. They’ll be competing with everybody’s memory of the recorded versions of the songs, not live and perhaps weak versions, so they’re still running a big risk of being inferior karaoke or putting together a new version that’s just messed up, a la Under My Thumb.

Sigh lucy my friend, that is so true. Up till now, it has been 42 hours and over? and i still can’t get that ringing, droning sound of Under my thumb out of my head. And that’s not in a good way. I will actually sing it to myself, and then start laughing at how ridiculous it sounds! Tim Urban has ruined me!

So having said that – i hope these kids do an arrangement that brings justice to the song, a la Straight up, or ruin the memories of successful songs in my head and have me humming to myself a horrendous version just ‘cos it’s so hilarious, a la Under My Thumb.

  40. yep, more hanson for me too! and i wouldn’t mind if anyone covered archie’s songs.

i think crystal and shiobhan can pull it off and i’m more worried for casey. not that worried for lee cos his version of fireflies shows he can be versatile

  41. Ooh, I like this theme a lot. We could actually have some fun next week.

First, I want Mama Sox to turn the tables and show Taylor Swift how it’s done with one of her own songs. That would be awesome.

Second, if Katie decides, “Screw the judges, I’m doin’ what I know,” then all my money is on her choosing Shelley Fabares’ huge “Johnny Angel” from 1962. And I’d be behind her 100% (and she’s one of my bottom 3).

Finally, I can see Casey and his blue eyes doing some heinous (in a good way) southern-rock things to “Last Train to Clarksville.” That would be excellent.

  42. Here’s a list of someone’s top 25 of all time.

    http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/listoftheday/104315

Just to include some more current teen idols who really aren’t all that, he left out a lot of older ones who were such as Buddy Holly and Bobby Vee. With a little thinking, I could come up with several dozen who were far better than Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and some others he lists.

  43. Oh noooooooo. At first glance, this theme looks really stupid!! ick. I hope the songs get put up soon so we can get a better idea of what they are talking about.

  44. This week was made for Tim Urban. LOL

Does this mean they’ll have Archie perform?

  45. This week was made for Tim Urban. LOL

Does this mean they’ll have Archie perform?

    Turban’s abs get another week!

they probably wont have him back… lol But I’m being pessimistic. lol

  46. hi tinawina – it would be a nice surprise, but i’m not holding my breath, lol… you’re right, if urban doesn’t shine during teen idol week, then it’s past time for him to go :)

  47. if urban doesn’t shine during teen idol week, then it’s past time for him to go

I’m sayin’. They are handing him another week on a silver platter, practically giving him a tour slot. Tim, don’t screw it up. LOL

they probably wont have him back… lol But I’m being pessimistic. lol

Aw come on! Who is more teen idol-y of the past contestants than Archie! It needs to be either him or Jordin or they just look stupid. LOL

  48. I just want to see someone attempt to sing “Crush” next week. Hee.

  49. Yeah, at first glance, the theme is stupid, which means the performances from the good people will be bloody amazing (look at Disco Week S8 and maybe Mariah Carey week S7, although the latter wasn’t stupid, just strongly in favor of the girls).

Crystal should do some Allison Iraheta. I really like the songs Just Like You and Don’t Waste The Pretty. Siobhan should do Beat Me Up or Friday I’ll Be Over U.

Teen Idol is a pretty broad and current theme (though I do admit it’s pretty stupid). On paper, it should be stupid, but if you really think about it, it could end up fantastic for the people who are good. Possibly terrible for the people who have sucked lately, but this’ll be a real challenge for the likes of Crystal and Siobhan (maybe Michael), and they definitely have the chops to rise up to that challenge and do something amazing this week. So in that case, it’ll be a fairly easy challenge that will end up well.

Well, if I think about it, a theme that’s catered FOR them can also be quite difficult (which is why I think Katie and Tim might do terribly this week). They’re the first ones who come to mind with this theme (as well as Aaron, but I have faith in him :P), so they get a lot of pressure to be current and not suck. I think that can be harder than what Crystal and Siobhan have to do, because those two have more power and experience to make a song like this their own. So Katie and Tim might have more difficulty, especially since they have to stand out and show why they are so great in this theme.

If Andrew does Hit Me Baby One More Time, I might have to hit someone ten more times. It’s so overdone, and I liked when Kris did it. We’ll see. I’ll have to wait to see if his performance is actually good.

  50. The only reason Archie won’t be back is that he’s not managed by 19. I bet Jordin makes a return. Somehow S9 and amazing seem like words that don’t belong in the same sentence. :)

  51. By fetus with hair are you referring to a 6 year old lesbian by the name of Justin bieber?

    That would be correct.

This is why I keep coming back to MJ’s, snark du jour!

  52. The only reason Archie won’t be back is that he’s not managed by 19. I bet Jordin makes a return.

But Jordin isn’t managed by 19 either. And durn, that means no Justin Bieber as a mentor. Missed opportunity.

  53. Six year old lesbian? Isn’t that a tad homophobic. :)

Oops, you’re right about Jordin. I forget she’s not with them anymore. Mentors and/or guest arists don’t have to be with 19( just very successful.)

I think Bieber being on Idol is a 100% lock. Bet the house on that one.

  54. Ooh! How many archie fans are on here?? I’m a major DA fan <3 I would LOVE to see him perform but I have to agree with everyone else and say he probably won’t perform. :( Unless….we get his new single this way! That would be AH-MAZING!!
ANYWAYS! This theme could be fabulous because they could do more current an upbeat songs. Or this theme could crash and burn. We’ll just have to see I guess. :)

  55. This theme is pretty wide open if the singers dig deep into the Billboard catalogue. Siobhan could rock out to the Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday” or the Bay City Rollers’ “Money Honey.” Michael could get all silky on David Cassidy’s “I Think I Love You.” Crystal would sound great on a blues/rock version of Hanson’s “This Time Around.” I don’t know if Paula Abdul qualifies as a teen idol, but “Rush Rush” is perfect for Didi. We need some rules though: Absolutely no New Kids on the Block blubber. This season has been subpar enough already.

  56. Beiber as mentor would be awesome. That’s like one long Saturday Night Live sketch right there. Could you imagine him giving advice to the likes of Crystal? “More swagger, girl. You need more swagger. Wear this chain.” LMAO!

  57. Yeah I’d bet on fetus being on next week. What with all the comments Ryan keep making. He’s a shoe in.

^^Maybe he’ll bring his swagger coach with him to teach them a thing or two.

  58. By teen idols do they mean artists that teens idolize, or artists that are teens?

  59. Probably ones they idolize. lol

Can we get some Bye Bye Bye up in here? It could make a good sing out haha

  60. This theme could be pretty broad, but it also has the potential to be very narrow. iTunes already as a “Teen Idols Essentials” playlist that is strictly for the over 60 crowd (it has “Gidget” and “Venus” on it, for Gokey’s sake). Hopefully, they’ll get to cover Teen Idols from other decades.

  61. When I first read this last night, my reaction was: WTF!!!

What a terrible sounding theme! I’m sorry, but what good music is there really going to be to choose from? I’m guessing they’ll allow teen idols from today and yesterday, so we’re likely to have some Miley and Taylor (which ALWAYS sounds terrible on AI as a general rule), then maybe some older teen idol thrown in too (something like the Monkees would be my first guess).

IDK – this ranks with any of the “current hits” theme weeks of year’s past – which usually turn out to be one hot karaoke mess.

The problem for me is that, the source material itself has to be strong. When you have weaker performers, strong songs can actually make them shine better than they otherwise would. So, RS week, or Beatles, or standards — that’s just naturally strong material to choose from.

But if you’re having people choose between The Climb and One Less Lonely Girl – OMFG is all I’ve gotta say. Yikes.

    OMG – LMAO!

  63. Well this is a lame theme. I’m worried about Crystal, Siobhan, and Lee already. If I liked Michael I would be worried about him too.

  64. Maybe Bieber can teach them those awesome handshake moves like he did Adam at one of the Jingle Balls. I can see Siobahn either being really confused by them, or getting dorkily into them, or possibly both.

  65. Some people eventually go beyond teen idoldom, but Michael Jackson was a huge teen idol, so was Elvis. The Beatles. Sinatra.

ITA. I feel this theme was partially intended to help the likes of Katie and Aaron (and Tim – is he a teen?) who are all being more heavily pimped by TPTB (especially Katie) than their ability really seems to warrant. They really really want Katie to do well I think – but she has yet to step up in a significant way that proves she can compete with the older people on the show.

  67. Insert Siobhan’s “What does that mean?” clip here.

Sounds like another sing-whatever-you-want theme. Crap, this could range from Bobby Darin to Leif Garrett to…the Jonas Brothers (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!).

  68. I actually kind of like this. There is such a wide swath of music to choose from… some of it great (Jackson 5, etc) and lots of really catchy pop songs that were not sung all that well in the original version (Britney, etc) so it is hard to sound bad by comparison. Plus the low expectations for the older contestants make it easier for them to shine. And the teens can certainly find things to fit them. There’s also a ton of uptempos available.

If people make good songs choices, it could be a fun night.

  69. Yall are being too grouchy lol, I think this has the potential to be a seriously fun theme night. I like my idol extra cheesy though because I am not watching to have music to download, so I infinitely prefer a theme like this to Rolling Stones. I reserve the right to be annoyed if it is all old songs though, I want some Mandy Moore and 98°

  70. It’s a sensible choice, since most of this year’s crop couldn’t handle Rolling Stones.

  71. I actually think that the Teen Idol thing will benefit those that aren’t teen idol types, because it will be much easier to ‘make the song their own’ by taking something that’s kind of cheesy and making it less so. It’s actually harder, I would say, to do justice to great material like by the Stones or The Beatles and not come off as either karaoke, or not living up to the material.

I mean Tim’s decision to randomly make some song reggae would fit better to something by, say, Frankie Avalon, then a really mean Stones song.

And the lack of rock from this group, wouldn’t be as glaring, or as annoying when it’s not music by an iconic rock band. It would be easier to add some rock or grit to something that has none.

I actually think the teens are most at a disadvantage, because they might fall into the ‘too karaoke’ trap.

    Just my .02.

  72. Dont get me wrong, I like my fair share of cheese. lol But an opportunity to snark on helmet hair boy was too good to pass up. haha

  73. Oh come on Siobhan is going to pull off some Hanson. You know she floves Hanson. Someone will pull some N Sync, Backstreet Boys, New Edition, Jordan, Tiffany, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Archie, Brittany Spears, and even some JoBro. LOL it could be a fun night. :)

  74. Dont get me wrong, I like my fair share of cheese. lol But an opportunity to snark on helmet hair boy was too good to pass up. haha

LMAO! I kinda love Tim Urban. He’s so hilarious. Just the fact that hes there is funny as hell. He is honestly like if they did an episode of Zach and Cody where one of them goes on American Idol. Can’t you just see it? He always looks stunned, like he is waiting for someone to give him his script that tells him what to say and do.

I want him to make the tour, just so the screaming teenage girls can show up, and all the parents can be disgusted.

  75. OMG I SO want someone to sing “Cried Like a Baby” by Bobby Sherman!!!!! (LOL)

  76. For me, Archie is Idol brightest teen former alumn! They should have him on the results show, managed by 19 or not! He´s huge talented, has an awesome voice and Idol stage needs some beauty for a change… and Archie = cuteness overload!!!

  77. My first reaction to this theme was WTF???? Second was that they really want to pull in the younger demographic and what a really stupid way to do it.

I can’t wait to see the playlist on iTunes to see who they use as teen idols. Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson would qualify, but would they use their songs when Idol has had ‘Stevie Wonder’ and ‘MJ’ theme weeks? I also wonder what decades they’ll pull their ‘Teen Idols’ from and if they will be actual teens when they were popular or just bubble gum pop that appealed to teens?

I think we’re still too early for mentors, but I’d go absolutely crazy in a good LOL way if they had Justin Bieber as a mentor. Just the look on Crystal’s face taking advice from fetus with hair would be worth it. I’d also like to be a fly on the wall listening to them talking about that experience amongst themselves.

I wouldn’t be surprised if both Archie and Jordan were guests on results night. I don’t think being managed by 19 matters.

  78. Crystal should do some Allison Iraheta. I really like the songs Just Like You and Don’t Waste The Pretty.

Well … Allison is definitely a *teen.* … And I’d love it if she were a “teen idol,” but except for the as-in-Idol-the-tv-show, don’t think she makes the cut.

Anyway, Alli’s sensibility and Crystal’s seem pretty similar, to me, in a lot of ways. I want Crystal to take some singer we’d *never* expect her to cover and then cover the heck out of it. (that’s what I’m hoping from all of them, of course, but I only feel confident that Crystal and Siobhan can actually accomplish it; and I’m not even completely sure that they *will.*….I like both of them a lot, but I’m still not sure that they totally know how to play the Idol game to their best advantage over the long haul yet.)

  79. It’s actually harder, I would say, to do justice to great material like by the Stones or The Beatles and not come off as either karaoke, or not living up to the material.

While on the surface this seems to make perfect sense, I don’t know that I completely agree. IMO having naturally strong material, song-wise, just makes it SOO much easier to actually turn in a solid performance.

I just think back to many of the best performances in the past on AI, and most of them featured songs that were very very strong to begin with (Billie Jean, Mad World, well, Heartless is debateable, lol, Alone, Summertime, etc.)

  80. So Katie and Tim might have more difficulty, especially since they have to stand out and show why they are so great in this theme.

Plus, they can only do this if they truly are each secure in a contemporary style of their own so that they can just do a song with that vibe — *and* have it be different enough from the original to not call karaoke accusations.

I think Tim has more of a contemporary style already developed than Katie (though, heaven knows, Katie has many good notes in her actual *voice,* whereas Tim has just that handful, lol).

I still have doubts that Katie actually has developed any contemporary singing style for herself at all. She sings like a very talented pageant/contest/show choir kid. I’m not really sure how well that will go over with any “teen idol” type song, past her present. Seems like her style is more likely to come out sounding pretty ponderous if it’s paired with a relatively light and frothy song.

I wouldn’t bet on this being a great week for them, really. They’ll be expected to sound much more teen-idolish than the older people and those with clearly established non-teen-idolish styles (like Aaron and his country style), I expect. And actually that could be a bit of a hard go, for Katie especially, in my opinion. …. On the other hand, she has a high school voting for her, so I’m sure she’ll be safe for quite a while yet!

  81. There’s also a ton of uptempos available.

So of course this will make their choice of songs, easier, since they won’t be singing any of these. lol

Seriously. We just came off Rolling Stones week, where about 95 percent of the song choices were uptempo…. And they all sang them downtempo!

  82. I just think back to many of the best performances in the past on AI, and most of them featured songs that were very very strong to begin with (Billie Jean, Mad World, well, Heartless is debateable, lol, Alone, Summertime, etc.)

ITA. It’s really much harder to mess up a really solid song, I think. Good songs tend to allow you to mold and manipulate and mess with, and yet they still come out as good songs.

Plus, the iconic songs, performers, and groups usually exist in so many cover versions out there already, that I think the audience may often be *less* wedded to the original, so less likely to scream karaoke.

  83. Seriously. We just came off Rolling Stones week, where about 95 percent of the song choices were uptempo…. And they all sang them downtempo!

OMG – the ballady pace of the songs is just adding to the anemic performances throughout this season! No wonder so many of them are boring and forgettable!

I really hope Siobhan uses the theme week to select some lighter material. One of my biggest pet peeves with her (and I like her) is that she leans way too heavily into darker material – I think every song she has done so far has been in a minor key. She doesn’t need to go 180 degrees in the other direction, and make it completely light and bubble-gummy, but maybe something like Hanson wouldn’t be such a crazy choice, if it let her have a little more fun on stage.

  84. Rex Smith – Take My Break Away

OMG! Blast from the past! LOL (I had SUCH a crush)

  85. Crystal should sing mmmmBop, not Sibohan. Now that would be a trip.

  86. I’m glad I decided to keep watching this season. Constantine’s “I think I love You” seemed ridiculous at the time but he was taking it so seriously. If they are laughing at themselves next week it will be fun.

  87. Rex Smith – Take My Break Away

OMG! Blast from the past! LOL (I had SUCH a crush)

Sorry, without edit, that should have been ‘Take My Breath Away’ And you still knew the song!

Well, Tim has sort of the right hair. For Shawn Cassidy as well ;)

I actually think the teens are most at a disadvantage, because they might fall into the ‘too karaoke’ trap.

    Just my .02.

The first and last statements are EXACTLY what I thought, except mine was wordier. I don’t think fans of Crystal and Siobhan will need to worry at all. Some of the best performances came from themes that you wouldn’t think the singer would’ve fit well in (Kradison in Disco, David Cook in Mariah Carey) or from unexpected song choices turned into great performances by ballsy performers (Kris’s Heartless and Cook’s Billie Jean, the latter of which I admittedly was not a fan of at all). At the same time, people struggled with themes we would’ve expected to work well with them. Lil Rounds, for example, during Motown and Disco week. So I’m expecting that Crystal and Siobhan will do well and Tim, Katie, and Aaron will struggle (hopefully not Aaron, I like him and want him to make tour D:)

Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus are not the only teen idols, they’re just the current ones. Chill a bit. Hell, when I thought Teen Idol, my thoughts almost immediately immediately went to the 90s, where there were arguably much more capable teenage singers. Then again, it might be current teen idol blockage from my mind.

Whoever said Allison didn’t fit, I kinda didn’t understand your reasoning >_>. She’s a teenager.

Justin Bieber as a mentor would be so painful that it might be funny. Totally loved that “hypothetical Crystal mentoring” XD.

Sorry for erasing one of your statements Truthiness, but I just wanted to say that Tim might have benefited if he waited a week to do the the reggae version.

  89. I am actually really excited for this theme! The contestants have a lot of awesome songs to choose from :)

… Is it asking too much of these kids to expect them to pick decent songs?

  90. PS: If this is really the theme, it’s a really stupid idea.

THIS. All I can say to this is OH BOY and not in a good way!

  91. Sorry, without edit, that should have been ‘Take My Breath Away’ And you still knew the song!

Well, Tim has sort of the right hair. For Shawn Cassidy as well

Of course! But do you remember the movie, “Sooner or Later”? Now that’s a classic. ;)

Nothing can top Rex’s hair, I think Tim has more of a Donny Osmond in his heyday hairstyle.

  92. Would it be too bold for Andrew to take on Ritchie Valens? What about Ricky Nelson? Elvis would be a major challenge for the guys. I suppose anyone could do a Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber song and sound better, but different?

Siobhan doing Lesley Gore’s, “You Don’t Own Me” would be too obvious, but what a great song that is.

  93. If Andrew does Hit Me Baby One More Time, I might have to hit someone ten more times. It’s so overdone….

I’m betting on a stripped down, acoustic version of “Ooops I Did It Again.”

  94. O.M.A I FLOOOOOVE THIS IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Bestest.theme.everrrrrr

Sadly I think they’ll do old idols :(be CURRENT.if you sing bieber, I don’t care how bad you are, you’ll have his fanbase behing u and u garunteed to win!!!

    GREAT GREAT GRET GREAT THEME!!!!!!

I wanna hear some t swift.,.

  95. By teen idols do they mean artists that teens idolize, or artists that are teens?

great question! BEATLES were teen idols, esp in their mop-top phase.

  96. The first big teen idol I remember is Ricky Nelson. They should have his twin boys on the show. They are loads of fun. Actually they should do a Ricky Nelson night, instead of a generic teen idol night.

Ricky was very popular and his sales broke records. Also, he went from light rock to light country which would help the Idol contestants out a lot as they could pick their favorite genre, rock or country.

Last but not least, Ricky was the first singer to launch his singing career on television before becoming a hit on radio (just like the Idols)…

Maybe next year…it’s definitely overdue. Of course, most of the kids would have no idea who Ricky Nelson is, but they should have to learn about past greats and get out of their comfort zone. IMHO that is part of the competition.

  97. revcat, I got to see Ricky Nelson about 6 months before he died. He was still awesome. :)

And FWIW, my definition of a teen idol is “anyone who’s ever been on the cover of Tiger Beat.” But a playlist sure would help….

  98. I wonder if ABBA would qualify as teen idols. They certainly appealed to many teen fans. I could see Siobhan taking on Dancing Queen, with its two octave range, and coming out in some funky ABBA costume. But could she make it her own?

  99. Crystal should sing “Lost in Your Eyes” by Debbie Gibson. She would be perfect for it and could play electric guitar as well. It would bring the house down.

  100. Someone needs to sing Archie’s “Crush”, then, if this is true. And if it’s available.

  101. revcat, I got to see Ricky Nelson about 6 months before he died. He was still awesome.

I just felt Rick(y) defined the Teen Idol of the age and his music is mixed genre. I would assume when they say Teen Idols, Elvis comes to mind. Maybe David or Shaun Cassidy. There was a period of time that no single guy was popular but rather groups. I will admit I don’t know a lot about the current Teen Idols. So, I’ll depend on many of you to keep me informed. (Thank you.)

  102. I like life, so, I hope none of these contestants make me shoot myself by doing Swift, Cyrus, Bieber, Lovato, Gomez, or any Jonas Bro. Luckily, Crystal’s my favorite, & I can’t picture her going there.

  103. BEATLES were teen idols, esp in their mop-top phase.

Interesting idea… I think it would be fun if they included “Hard Days Night” or maybe even a Monkees song on the list. Pleasant Valley Sunday, anyone?

  104. I wonder if ABBA would qualify as teen idols. They certainly appealed to many teen fans. I could see Siobhan taking on Dancing Queen, with its two octave range, and coming out in some funky ABBA costume. But could she make it her own?

I don’t think ABBA is teen idols. Having said that, Siobhan can do The Winner Takes It All some justice.
Actually, I like to see ABBA as a theme week by itself.

  105. Actually, I like to see ABBA as a theme week by itself.

OMG. My head would explode from the awesomeness of that.

ex-lurker, I tried to guess what I was going to see when I clicked on your link, and found myself humming, “…gonna keep on, keep on, keep on, keep on dancing all through the night…”

    So CLOSE!

  106. Actually, I like to see ABBA as a theme week by itself

OMG. My head would explode from the awesomeness of that.

ABBA has been a theme of idol all over the world, why not US ?
Yes, Americans are not big fans of ABBA compared to other countries, but I think if it is a theme, it will be a surprise how much enjoyable it is. TPTB should do this. I don’t want same old same old themes. And those critics will see how hard ABBA songs really are to sing.

  107. found myself humming, “…gonna keep on, keep on, keep on, keep on dancing all through the night…”

    So CLOSE!

    LOL

  108. I’m sayin’. They are handing him another week on a silver platter, practically giving him a tour slot. Tim, don’t screw it up. LOL

Oh there is no way they won’t call him (kara)oke, UNLESS, he has more musical ability than anyone can ever think or dream (no I wouldn’t dream this, seriously, just no) and can change something up when we least expect it. Honestly, I don’t see this happening, but this show has actually had surprises in the past.

Okay, I love my daughter and would be supremely happy for her if he made top ten. (He probably will.)

  109. I hope this doesnt mean songs from current artist that are teens. YIKES. Maybe it means artists that started their careers as teens. My generation of teen idols would be Britney, Xtina, Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Jessica Simpson etc.

  110. This is so strange. Simon’s comments after Lee’s performance this week – on trying to have a moment, personality not shining, being a dark horse; I immediatelly commented (jokingly)that maybe Lee could create a moment on the piano. I was thinking of Kris who played guitar only up to that point and then brought up the piano to create a moment.

Well, I read TV Guide article on Idol’s Dozen.
I guess I did not know this before, but on Lee’s article – his secret weapon is the piano which he is saving it for rainy day.

Kris has so much better tone of voice IMO, but of course he did not have Simon in his corner this early in the game.

  111. For some reason I can only think of 60’s songs. Would Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons count? Saw a show recently where there was a medley of those great old songs: “Sherry”, “Walk Like A Man”, “Let’s Hand On To What We’ve Got”, “Workin’ My Way Back To You”.
Gosh, Casey could have a MOMENT if he did an early Elvis song. I vote for “Heartbreak Hotel”, but he’s got to move more onstage.
I liked the old Idols themes where they would wear clothes from different eras and sort of ham it up. Maybe that would add spark to this season.
ETA- Wow! Didn’t know Lee played piano, too. Can’t wait to see it.

  112. I admit, I also got kind of excited when I read that TV Guide tip about Lee’s piano skills.

I like him, and I want to see “a moment” from him more than I do anyone else right now. After much analysis (certainly much more than I should be expending on a reality show), I’ve decided it’s a combination of (1) the fact that I really like the tone of his voice, (2) he seems like a nice guy, (3) he was watching Cookie like they all should have been, and (4) the fact that his deer-in-the-headlights look reminds me of a certain recently-lost and much-lamented young man. So, go, Lee! Give us the Alex Lambert Memorial Moment!!
