American Idol 2025 Top 3 release new recordings ahead of the Grand Finale where the show crowns a winner
Ahead of Sunday night’s American Idol season 23 GRAND FINALE, the Top 3 have released new songs. Unlike previous ABC singles, the new recordings are mostly songs already performed on the show.
Only Breanna Nix dropped a song she’s never performed before (It’s also not a cover, from what I can tell). John Foster dropped his original song, “Tell That Angel I Love Her,” which he performed on the Top 20 three-hour Easter night “Songs of Faith” special. Jamal Roberts recorded the Tom Odell song, “Heal” that he memorably performed for the Top 12 Iconic American Idol Moments theme.

Breanna Nix – Higher
Breanna’s song has the potential to be a Christian single, but also has crossover appeal. According to Spotify, Hot Chelle Rae’s Nash Overstreet, songwriter Shane Stevens (Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Jordin Sparks, Cassadee Pope, Fifth Harmony, Little Mix) and singer-songwriter Toby Lightman penned the tune.
On Instagram, Breanna gushed that the song is her first record ever.
Jamal Roberts – Heal (Tom Odell cover)
For the Iconic American Idol Moments theme, Jamal took a left turn. Instead of nodding to R&B contestants such as Fantasia, Jordin Sparks or Ruben Studdard, the singer chose a song performed by singer-songwriter Leah Malene.
On paper, “Heal” by indie artist Tom Odell seemed like a mismatch. But on stage, Jamal turned the song into a gospel prayer. It’s one of the singer’s best performances of the entire competition. It’s no wonder he’s dropped it as his American Idol single.
“My version of HEAL is out now,” Jamal wrote on Instagram. “I hope it brings a little peace to anyone who may need it.”
John Foster – Tell That Angel I Love Her (Original song)
The only Idol single that is written by the contestant, “Tell That Angel I Love Her” paid homage to John Foster’s high school friends, Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill, who died in a car accident. Performed for the Easter Sunday “Songs of Faith” week, on Instagram, John calls it “the most instrumental song that I’ve ever sang in my entire life.”
He also reminds fans to vote for him and shuts down some fan’s belief that he’d be better off not winning the show. “It absolutely is not true y’all!” He asks fans to give it one last push. “If you appreciate my artistry and/or want to keep my sound of country alive, I need you to vote and share,” John implored.
John previously released a recorded version of “Tell That Angel I Love Her” last year. He calls the new recording an “updated version.”
American Idol contestants Mattie Pruitt, Gabby Samone, Slater Nalley, Thunderstorm Artis also release new recordings
The Top 3 aren’t the only season 23 contestants releasing songs this week. Top 7 singer Mattie Pruitt released a new song called “Strings” witten by Jenna Andrews and Stephen Kirk who also produced the track. Her fellow Top 7 singer Gabby Samone dropped a version of Nina Simone’s “Four Women” which she memorably covered for the Showstoppers round. Additionally, Top 5 contestant, Thunderstorm Artis released a new original song titled “I Just Want You to Know.” He wrote on Instagram, “This song is for those who hold our families together.” And Slater Nalley, also Top 5, dropped a recorded version of his viral original audition song, “Traces of You” which he wrote for his teacher’s late son.
American Idol season 23 3 hour finale airs on ABC at 8 pm EDT across all US time zones. Streams next day on HULU.
