American Idol 2023 Auditions 2 Jon Wayne Hatfield
(ABC/Eric McCandless) JON WAYNE HATFIELD

American Idol season 21 continued on Sunday (Feb 26) with more new singers. OK. One wasn’t new. She appeared on the show as an infant. But we’ll get to that.

As far as emotional stories were concerned, week 2 was even more gut wrenching than the premiere. Country singer Trey Louis talked about watching his friends die at the hands of a school shooter. It happened in 2018 in Santa Fe, Texas. Deeply tragic backstory aside, Trey had the good, with Luke Bryan comparing him to Chris Stapleton.

Additionally, 15 year old Kaylin Hedges nabbed a Platinum Ticket, which allows her to skip the first Hollywood Round, and had an emotional reunion with her dad who has been deployed overseas by the military. She’s young, but has potential.

Also moving tonight–Jon Wayne Hatfield’s original song, “Tell Me Ray,” a song of love and acceptance written for his gay grandfather.

But my favorite audition, for personal reasons, had to be Makayla Stacey. I met Makayla when she was a little baby in her father’s arms back in 2007. She was a huge part of her father’s backstory And now she’s a teenager and auditioning for American Idol. I may lose my mind.

OK fans. It’s time to vote. Pick your favorite performance, and grade the episode!
