American Idol 2022 Polls: Rate the Premiere, Best Performance

(ABC/Eric McCandless) NOAH THOMPSON

American Idol kicked off season 20 with a night full of solid performances. The best of the night: Nicolina, Danielle Finn, and HunterGirl. Tyler Allen gets major props for not oversinging a Whitney Houston song. Noah Thompson has raw talent. But I hope he’s not in over his head. He’s like a deer in the headlights, at this point. The hayseeds haven’t fared so well. They either crash and burn or head home and commit crimes. (Caleb Kennedy, Cecil Ray, Garbage Man dude).

Also, I don’t think having Aretha Franklin’s 15 year old daughter on the show, only to pale in comparison to her famous grandmother. She’s only 15, and could improve a lot in a few years. But I was not feeling even a tiny bit of star quality from her. I hope her family is being honest with her.

And lastly, American Idol could dial back the Queen for a Day sob stories. I’ve said it before, but it’s worth saying again. Backstories help viewers get to know the contestants. Sad backstories are fine. But framing them too melodramatically, not so much.

Nevertheless, the new season is off to a good start. What do you think?
