American Idol 2021 Polls: Solos, All Star Duets Pt 2

American Idol Top 24 Solos and All Star Duets Part 2 didn’t contain the obvious standout moments like night one did. But there were some very good performances. Again: The solos were TOO SHORT. And generally, the duets were the best performances. The celebrities tend to lift up the singers to bring out the best in them.

Tonight’s big surprise for me was Ava August who performed a solid solo and a lovely duet of Joni Mitchell’s classic “Both Sides Now” with the sublime Josh Groban. She could be a dark horse! Colin Jamieson the ex-boybander from New England, also surprised me. He didn’t have the best performance of the night, but I do think he is most improved. He delivered a solid Bruno Mars cover, and his duet with Tori Kelly had some great moments.

Casey Bishop’s Paramore cover ROCKED. But she held back on her duet with Brandon Boyd. Maybe she was a little intimidated? She’s not going anywhere, so hopefully she’s on an improvement arc. Hunter Metts had a good night. But now I’m thinking the judges are just confusing him with bad advice (NO HE DOES NOT NEED TO HAVE A VOCAL MOMENT STOP BUGGING HIM ABOUT IT).

Chace Beckham’s solo was a real snoozer, but he came alive singing with Brandon Boyd. When Chase connects to a song, he’s mesmerizing. Mary Jo Young had a good night. She broke out with the upbeat “Castle on a Hill” and held her own with duet partner Jewel. I didn’t like Beane’s solo at all. But I think his duet with Josh Groban saved him. I appreciate that Beane is willing to swing from the fences, but if he pushes TOO hard, he’s liable to fly off and get hurt.
