I conducted a little internet research on this week’s American Idol hopeful. I figured that the judges would treat yodeler Jared Lettow as a joke contestant. And I was correct!
The Iowa native, who now lives in Santa Barbara, California, has the ability yodel ENDLESSLY. Who knows what the producers instructed him to do behind the scenes. Maybe he sang one song without the yodel, before the judges asked him to break it out for fun? But in any case, in this performance, he’s not even trying to sing well!
At one point, the self-taught yodeler gives judge Katy Perry a lesson. She loses interest pretty quickly, however. A befuddled Lionel Richie doesn’t know what to make of Jared. And Luke Bryan, who has probably heard plenty of yodeling in his day, was not amused.
There were also jokes about the hopeful’s name. It’s pronounced like the actor Jared Leto, but spelled “Lettow.” Katy wondered if the confusion annoyed him, and suggested he uses his middle name instead. Jared goes on to make a really bad pun, which I will not spoil here.
“I think you definitely have one of the coolest party tricks I’ve ever heard,” Katy says by way of letting him down easy, “But I just don’t think it’s right for American Idol.” And then: “it’s a no-dle.” Welp.
Jared takes it all in stride. “I might have gotten a no, But I’m not going to stop yodelling!” he declares.
The American Idol 2020 auditions continue on ABC Sunday March 1 at 8 pm ET/PT.
