On Sunday (March 15) it’s the last of the American Idol season 18 auditions! Watch Demi Rae perform Noah Cyrus’ “Mad at You,” in a new preview clip.
Twenty-six year old Demi Rae from San Jose, California. was introduced to music at a young age via her father, a dance instructor. He was in and out of jail for most of Demi’s childhood. But this story has a happy ending. When Demi was 15, Dad got clean and turned his life around. It took him awhile, but he’s sober, healthy and part of her life now.
Demi brings along a book she wrote when she was 9 years old “My Future,” it reads. “I would like to be a singer for my career in the future. When I get old enough, I will strive for my goal, and I will go on American Idol.” But sadly, insecurities have kept Demi from pursuing her dreams to the fullest. “I don’t look like the other girls,” she explains to judges, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.
Katy tells the young singer that she doesn’t look like the other girls, because she’s unique. By being herself, she can be a role model to other girls who struggle with self esteem (OK that’s major paraphrasing, but even Katy admits she got a little tongue-twisted!) Katy compliments her voice, “It’s not just typical.” Luke adds, “Right off the bat you started hitting these perfect…falsetto runs.” He adds, “Now all we have to do is…lift you up and get behind you and encourage you every step of the way.” Lionel says, “If this is how you sing, scared to death and with no confidence, I can’t imagine what you’re going to be when you realize…I’ve got this.”
Demi gets her Golden Ticket. Katy gives it to her in a sweet and unusual way.
American Idol airs on ABC Sunday March 16 at 8 pm ET/PT. Hollywood week begins Monday March 17!
