American Idol would normally be in the thick of competition right now. But with production halted across the county due to coronavirus concerns, producers are airing clip shows this week and next, until they decide out how to finish the season using remote technology.
The upcoming clip shows will feature footage like this Franklin Boone performance of John Meyer’s “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You)” for the Genre round of Hollywood Week. His acoustic treatment of the song impressed judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. Katy got up on her feet. “This is his world right here,” said Luke. “This theater, that guitar…” Eventually, Franklin advanced all the way to the Top 21.
The clip begins with Franklin receiving encouraging words from Alejandro Aranda, the 2019 runner-up. “I feel this unspoken pressure to want to change my personality a little,” says Franklin, who adds that Alejandro staying true to himself throughout the competition inspired him to do the same. “Never change,” advised Alejandro. “You’re you for a reason.”
