American Idol 2019 Top 8 Revealed: Polls and Photo Gallery

AMERICAN IDOL - "214 (Disney Night)" - (ABC/Eric McCandless) DIMITRIUS GRAHAM

On Sunday’s (April 21) American Idol, the show went LIVE coast to coast for the first time this season. And fans got a surprise. Remember the Judges Save? Well…it’s back! There was no judges save last year, and for a good reason. The live show round is so brief, what’s the point? And it’s still true! The judges have three weeks to use the save or lose it. And if they use it, 3 singers will leave the competition the following week.  Save a singer for one week, maybe two? It’s stupid.

American Idol 2019 Recap: Top 10 Performances/Top 8 Reveal

In any case, the judges–Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan decided NOT to save eliminated contestants, Uche or Dimitrius Graham. I said it in my recap–the judges saved them once as wildcard picks. It would be pointless to save them again, when viewers have plainly rejected them. The last contestant declared safe, Alyssa Raghu, was the panel’s third wildcard. Maybe the judges should allow viewers to pick whom they want. But on the other hand, the Top 10 might be a heck of a lot less diverse without judges picks. Speaking of which–the only two African Americans in the Top 10 were immediately eliminated, which is really disappointing.

It was an odd night of performances. Everyone’s vocals were generally good–not a clunker in the bunch. But several of the song choices were just BORING. A great performance begins with a great song, y’all. Alyssa’s corny “Colors of the Wind,” Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon’s snoozy “Candle in the Water” and Madison VanDenburg’s overdone “How Far I’ll Go” just didn’t cut it as song choices. However, all three singers did the best with what they had.

My favorite performances of the night: Alejandro Aranda’s achingly poignant “Remember Me,” and Walker Burrough’s sweet, simple and sincere rendition of “When She Loved Me.” Uche’s “Eye to Eye” was tons of fun. So mad he won’t be around for next week’s Queen night! And Dimitrius performed a beautifully controlled rendition of “You’ll Be in My Heart.” Yet–both were eliminated.

Welp! It’s onwards and upwards. Next Sunday (April 28) American Idol season 8 alum Adam Lambert mentors a night of Queen covers.
