iHeartRadio personality Bobby Bones will be returning to American Idol this Sunday (May 29) to mentor the Top 3, Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe as they get ready to compete in the finale.
The syndicated country DJ mentored the Top 24 through their solo performances. His advice for the singers was mostly of the generic “BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!” variety, rather than concrete tips on how to improve, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have him back. He’ll promote the show to his vast radio audience, which is why ABC contracted him in the first place, I’m sure.

There is no word yet on the format of Sunday’s show. Will the Top 3 perform two or three songs each? Will the judges choose one of the songs? Simon Fuller used to “pick” a song for each of the Top 3, but since he’s been unceremoniously bounced from his ownership stake in Idol, that won’t be happening. Keep in mind, the Top 3 episode is serving as the finale as well, therefore one of the performances will be an original winners song.
The Top 5 all had winners songs written. Songwriter Ely Rise revealed on twitter that he had penned Top 5 contestant, Michael J Woodards song.
Damn. I wrote Michael's finale song :( oh well.
