American Idol 14 Top 6 Theme is Arena Anthems

TVLine is reporting that next week, the American Idol 14 theme will be “Arena Anthems.”  In other words, the Top 6 will perform “songs that can entertain a massive crowd and are performed by mega superstars.”

Whatever that means!

The theme appears to be cross-genre, as if it could encompass anyone from Carrie Underwood, to Katy Perry or Usher.

ETA: I am probably interpreting the blurb from TV line broader than some of you! I think possible songs for this theme would include any sing-along song from a music superstar. Journey, Queen and AD/DC certainly fit. But I think there are country and R&B songs that could work, too. Maybe a better example for the R&B category would be something like Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long.” Also…edited the title! The theme is “ARENA ANTHEMS” not “Arena Rock.”

In addition to the theme, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team stars Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan will be on hand during the episode to help make “a very special announcement.”

Abby Wambach holds the world record for international goals – men or women – with 178 in her career, while Alex Morgan has scored 51 times in her first 84 games for the USA, reports TV Line. Both will play important roles for Team USA in this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015, which will be broadcast on Fox and its related networks.

Maybe the special announcement as to do with the upcoming American Idol Live Tour. Click to check out the schedule. The Top 6 episode is an important one, as it will determine which 5 finalists will head out on the road this summer. Tickets go on sale Friday.  Unlike previous seasons, which featured 10-11 contestants, only the Top 5 will take part in the lineup. Venues have been downsized even further to theaters. But the band it back. So there’s that.

It looks like there are no mentors or performers set for next week.

American Idol airs Wednesday April 22 at 8/7c PM on FOX
