Hollywood Week is Underway! Check out a few deets from TMZ’s Too Fab:

The 200-plus “Idol” hopefuls, who arrived from across the country after auditioning in their home cities, attended an orientation session Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at a Pasadena hotel, TooFab has learned. The hopefuls will compete over the next several days to snag a spot in the group that heads to the next round.

Sources tell TooFab that contestants were given a list of songs that they can sing during the “Hollywood Week” competitions. The songs on the approved list include those by artists including The Black Eyed Peas and The Jackson 5. The hopefuls will sing in groups, as well as solo.

Sounds pretty much like business as usual so far.

MORE DETAILS FROM JoesPlace

Today and Tomorrow are acapella days. They will cut about half of the contestants in the next two days. Thursday is Group Day (My fave, drama filled day). Friday is the final Solo performances. By the end of Friday’s performances the field will have been cut to 40 contestants. (Our Top 40)

The remaining 40 contestants will then TRAVEL to Las Vegas and will sing a song with the cast of Love by Cirque du Soleil. The contestants will draw from a hat to determine which BEATLES song they will perform with the cast.

  1. I love the Beatles, but I don’t like them crammed down my throat on Idol. It really ruined the Top 11 of Season 7 by repeating a Beatles week.

  2. So, what happens with the top 40 group? Is that aired as like the final show in the Hollywood week, and then from there we have whatever will be the semi-final group (e.g. the equivalent of Top 24 or Top 36 from previous years)? Or is Top 40 the new Top 24? I’m confused. lol

  3. Emmuzka, I think they hat draw will be controlled in such a way that the chosen rocker will get “Come Together,” the chosen diva will get “Let It Be” and the chosen cannon-fodders will get “Revolution Number 9” or “You Know My Name, Look Up My Number.”

I don’t know yet. It confuses me too. BUT, I am hopeful that I will no more by the weekend….hopefully.

  5. Whuh? How this will fit to the idea that the singers should always present who they are in their song choices? They don’t have the time to re-arrange, so what happens when a guy/girl who is “Come Together”, or “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” -type gets “Obladi, Oblada” or “Help”??

Clearly, you do not know what “draw from a hat” means. ;-)

Within the Idol context, “draw from a hat” has the following definitions:
    – If you are somebody that Idol wishes to have on the show, you will pick from a hat filled with slips of paper all containing the name of the same song. A Song that the producers feel will perfectly fit your style. A song that is well known. A song that is loved. A song that will give you a moment.

    – If you are somebody that Idol wishes to not have on the show or who is intended to be fodder, you will pick from a hat filled with slips of paper all containing the name of the same song. A song that the producers feel is the very antethisis to your style. A song that is obscure, dreary, boring and/or generally loathed. A song that will, in short, make you look like a cross between an idiot and a talentless hack.

Nigel has fully admitted in the past that the “bowl/hat” does not contain the same songs for all contestants and that there are only about 3 choices per bowl (despite however many slips of paper there appears to be). Each bowl is tailored for each contestant.

I’m kind of surprised that there will be 40 Beatle songs to sing. Maybe to make people look more ridiculous, they will have to sing a duet with somebody completely inappropriate. Perhaps the punk rocker and the rapper will have to duet on “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”.

  6. The contestants will draw from a hat to determine which BEATLES song they will perform with the cast.

Here we go again. WHY?!?!?! Let them be!!!!!

  7. Heh Kirsten.
I could see this Las Vegas segment making for some good teevee. Total crap for the contestants (and their post AI careers), but then I’ve pretty much given up on the idea that AI is going to use it’s powers for good in the music business at this point anyway, so I say bring on the entertainment.

  8. I don’t think I like the part of them performing with Cirque de Soleil, and having pick supposidley random songs. I know they are trying to show performance skills, but they should be able to do this a different way. And I think the last round of Hollywood week, the contestants should really be allowed to do what they want to show what kind of artist they are. If they have to perform with Cirque de Solei, they will kind of have to conform to a certain style for their last performance before the semi finals.

Little snips of paper taped to the bottom of the hat. :)

I despise this kind of cross promo. *belch*

  10. Idol should just stay in Vegas because all it will be is total Star Search cabaret fodder. I couldn’t be less interested, it really is appalling. I know every year people say oh I’m so done with Idol blah blah and just keep watching but I really do not want to watch this at all. I’d much rather spend my time listening to music and performances I actually enjoy.

  11. They stick to The Beatles because they’re scared of progress or are completely dumb (Holy crap, this sounds vaguely political!)

Seriously, it’s time for American Idol to stop humping The Beatles. I don’t know if I like the Cirque du Soleil thing either.

Suddenly my hope in the season is kinda dwindling. STEVEN TYLER AND J. LO SAVE US!

And honestly, I’d rather they just fix the group day to eliminate the absolutely meaningless and idiotic drama. Something like “If you don’t get along, we will kill the drama-starter on sight. We have snipers stationed everywhere around this building and will give them the signal if we sense your drama.” Or instead of kill, eliminate them from the competition. I’d be all for a tamer “kill-on-sight” thing, maybe with a tranquilizer gun or a simple disqualification to send the message that self-entitled douches and drama-starters don’t succeed.

For example, Mary Powers, Tatiana del Toro, and the whole “Bad Romance” groups last year was just frigging stupid. Oh, remember Katrina Darrell and that one girl who b*tched at Kristen McNamara and ended up getting eliminated? I dunno. Some people are too nice to them.

Not that I won’t watch Hollywood Week, I just feel quite a bit annoyed by it.

  12. I mostly don’t like the group round, and I liked in Season 7 when they didn’t even have them.

  13. I don’t really care what the format is. Just get me some people that are able to entertain. The Cirque du Soleil stuff has me intrigued, at least there will some movement on the show. Unlike 75% of last season.

  14. Nigel has fully admitted in the past that the “bowl/hat” does not contain the same songs for all contestants and that there are only about 3 choices per bowl (despite however many slips of paper there appears to be). Each bowl is tailored for each contestant.

Love your explanation of drawing from a hat, Idol style, Kirsten. They may have 40 songs on a list somewhere, but there won’t be 40 songs to choose from, any more than any of the other ‘lists’ were ever actual. Idol always finds a way to twist it.

This whole thing is sounding convoluted and completely useless, except for the “Good TV” aspect. As in – Oh Joy, more drama rama.

I still haven’t seen a reason to check it out before Top 12 – one can always back track to the people who actually were put through by TPTB, if they are interesting enough. That’s the only thing I want to know – are the cast this year any good – and they’ll drag that out til the 12th of never, if they can.

Yeah, what is the logic behind the group rounds anyways? Do the judges really change their minds about a contestant based on a group performance?

  16. They stick to The Beatles because they’re scared of progress or are completely dumb (Holy crap, this sounds vaguely political!)

I wouldn’t be surprised if 19 struck a deal with iTunes in negotiations for banner ads and during season advertisements!

  17. I like the group performances well enough — the White Chocolate on in S8 with Matt and Kris was cool to see. But I can certainly do without all the behind the scenes “drama”, like with Nathaniel, Kristen and the other girl, or with Tatiana or with Bikini Girl.
