Allison Iraheta – Disney Top 30 Countown – Interview

Thanks to @alliholics for this two part interview with Allison Iraheta on Radio Disney’s Top 30 countdown. Allison co-hosted the countdown this weekend.

Watch Cooper, Osnes & Munoz Sin...
Watch Cooper, Osnes & Munoz Sing Irving Berlin!

Allison tells a hilarious story about her pet bird, Burrito. You see, there’s no love lost between Allison and Burrito. In fact, he bit her nail off a few days ago. (Ouch!) Then, she bit him back (Not really). A pretty fun interview once you get past the obligatory discussion on how to pronounce Allison’s name (Iraheta, with a long I, peeps)

In part two, we’re treated to a live, acoustic version of “Don’t Waste the Pretty”.

Check out the interview, after the JUMP. It’s been too long since I put up an Allison post!

  1. Hopefully this will help spike some sales for Allison. I’ve been really surprised at the lack of promotion for her.

  2. Great to hear from Alli! Since she’s played this at several events, I wonder how DWTP would do as a next single? It is a good song.

  3. I hope that she’s been quiet because she’s busy finishing up her school work to get it out of the way so she can concentrate on promoting the album. In a few months, she will no longer be a minor and maybe that will make things a bit easier for her team.

She really is pretty funny in interviews. That Jake guy seemed to really like her.

  4. she always makes me lol! good interview and I’m glad they re-played the don’t waste the pretty performance! it was fab! :D

  5. I hope that she’s been quiet because she’s busy finishing up her school work to get it out of the way so she can concentrate on promoting the album. In a few months, she will no longer be a minor and maybe that will make things a bit easier for her team

IMO, 19E/Jive is waiting until she hits 18 in April. They decided to go with an album that wasn’t slanted toward G-rated teen pop, and once she hits 18 they can promote her as a young adult. Just about every teen Idol that 19E has signed has gone the Disney route for promotion until they hit 18. I’m just glad they only wasted one single, the most teen pop-ish, during this waiting period.

DWTP would make an excellent next single. It has the type of vibe which could crossover to Hot AC/AC. That could set-up future singles, like Trouble Is and Scars, which have more of an Hot AC/AC vibe.

  6. Dear God I love Alli and I LOVE DWTP! It should be her next single hands down! As much of Kris fanatic I am, I actually tend to think with the exception of FIBOU, her album is the strongest debut from Season 8 easily. But Kris’s is a very close second as I do think it’s very good too.

  7. Back when Radio Disney first aired this performance of Don’t Waste The Pretty on January 7, I screwed up and didn’t get it recorded. This time I was ready and got it.

So, if you want to download my copy, here it is — but keep in mind, it’s not an mp3 file — it’s an iPod file, which you can put into iTunes and then on an iPod:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?z2wujiqdndr

Because they talked over the guitar intro this time, I edited it so it starts right as she’s about to start singing.

Also, I’ve posted this before, but just to put both of her January 7 performances in one place, here’s my mp3 of the FIBOU/JLY medley she did on the 7th:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?z5o2tzkof2j

  8. yeah i too have been extremely worried about the promotion shes been getting. the album is excellent and filled with hits. i think they made a big mistake released FIBOU. *sigh* waiting until april seems like too long of a wait for her to really be out there. DWTP will be a perfect next single.

  9. Bit her NAIL off?… ouchouchouchouch. I would totally bite that bird back. But then, I’m sensitive about my nails and teeth :P

  10. Don’t Waste the Pretty or D is for Dangerous would be good single choices, I think.

Of course, my judgments of good single choices are based around 1 criteria: does it please Sherena… so maybe aren’t the most accurate out there. haha.

  11. She really does give a great interview! And this wasn’t even really a true interview, she was witty and insightful, as was said in idol, she’s seasoned and ready. That acoustic version was great and again to take a cue from idol, you hear one note and it’s unmistakably Alison! I wish she had some better promo outside of radio disney, nothing wrong with radio disney, but she is so much better than the teeniebopper music.

  12. Being under 18 is a tricky time. I believe her folks are somewhat
protective of her….a good thing. She is doing a lot of growing up
this last year, and I feel that this slower process is better for her.
I am hoping that they give her a big promotional push, and drop her second single on her birthday!! I personally love DWTP(She described it very PC, as in don’t waste your time on the unworthy).
So, ITA that DWTP is a geat choice. After that, I hope they will consider
the rocking “Holliday”, which is soooo good!!!!
Huh, it’s getting to the point that she is aceing her interviews now.
What were we worried about?…..ON HER WAY!!!!!

  13. Is it bad that I want her to stay as far away from Disney as possible?

I like DWTP, but I wish she’d release something a little harder, like No One Else or Still Breathing or Holiday. But what I love is that pretty much every song on this CD could be a hit if people took the time to listen to it!!!

  14. I’d be happy with pretty much anything as a second single. I think every song in this album is really strong and showcases something special about Allison. There are many different sides of her and no one song shows them all.

  15. Extraordinary personality, great singer, unique. Very strong and very, very smart girl. She has a great career ahead of her. I love all the songs, but maybe the most – DWTP and No One Else.
    Allison All The Way !!

  16. It was too long without news from her. Great interview. Love acoustic DWTP. She added a few notes that I haven’t heard on other versions.

I never thought of that. Makes sense: release early December to grab a piece of the holiday sales, release the poppy and out-of-character song with the release, and come back in spring with a second push to promote the deeper-rockier sounds of the album. If it works, it is brilliant.

  17. Fingers (and arms, and legs) crossed that chessguy99 is right

I think it makes perfect sense so I also hope it’s true.

  18. sbalk017
Is it bad that I want her to stay as far away from Disney as possible?

No. None of her fans I know wants her to be a pop princess marketed to tweens. But, Disney is an outlet. As long as Disney is treated as such, it should be ok. If it starts affecting her decisions regarding performances, single releases, and attitude, then I would be worried.

  19. I’m hoping that Idol Season 9 helps promote Allison a little. Certainly a mid-season appearance – singing anything but FIBOU, please. Also, since Idol used a snippet of Pieces in an audition segment, it just makes sense that they would use a snippet of Still Breathing in Hollywood when contestants survive elimination.

I’m going to repeat some things I said previously in a “dead thread” and got no comments. (So glad I took JohnM’s advice and saved my longer posts on a Word file)

Does anyone understand the political ramifications of the Simon Fuller vs. 19 situation? Assuming that all is well with 19/Jive, etc., I have said before and will say again that some of Allison’s songs would be dynamite on So You Think You Could Dance. And, of course, getting rights to the music should not be an issue.

I can imagine a Travis Wall contemporary duet to Trouble Is. With the right dancers and brilliant choreography it could be one of the most unforgettable duets of Season 7. The more mature audience would get and hopefully appreciate the emotional impact of the song along with the dancing. Only problem – just like Idol, the song would have to be cut down for time constraints. How do you cut anything out of Trouble Is?

I think D is for Dangerous would be a great opening group number. I can envision the choreography now. (Disclaimer – I am not a dancer or choreographer, and basically know nothing about dance other than what I learned when I took tap when I was 5 years old).

I can imagine a NappyTab (or whatever) theme number for Robot Love. Beat Me Up would also make a great duet, especially since most of the choreographers don’t seem to mind at all getting pretty edgy on themes.

30 second snippets of a number of the other songs would lend themselves nicely to the dancers’ solos. I think Scars would lend itself to a great contemporary solo.

For sure, they wouldn’t overuse Allison – they don’t even overuse established musicians. But – one breakthrough number (Trouble Is duet, please!) could help kick-start her career.

Comments from any Allison fans who also watch the dance shows?

One other thing: Maybe Allison is busy practicing her guitar skills right now. All she needs is to be able to play like Orianthi and she’s on her way. Shouldn’t be that difficult, right? :)

  20. Is that Jake guy hitting on her? What’s the deal?

It kind of seemed to me like he was, wasn’t he? He was so “happy to have you here right in front of me” and at one point I kind of heard him say that he would not be over her by Friday…did I hear right?

  21. PRM
Those are the two parts of the interview that gave me that impression. Sometimes she goes to interviews and interviewers may know about the show and the winners, but not much about her. But this guy knew.
Listing the times he had seen her in person was a nice touch.
He asked about the animals, which I don’t recall coming up on the show.
And, the picture above doesn’t help matters :-).
Of course, being the first time I hear the guy, it could just be that he does his homework.

  22. I dunno, I think you guys are hearing more than is there. I didn’t hear anything about him not being over her by Friday (I did hear him make a joke about the pronoun in “Just Like You”, but that’s all that struck me). I think he just does his homework (tm LDR) — probably including some stuff that he picked up from the staff when she was there earlier this month, and he’s a good, friendly host.

As for this “wait till she’s 18 and change strategies” theory, I don’t buy into that. While I can certainly believe that they might have backed off the promo for a bit to give her some time to finish schoolwork, I see no reason to start out targeting her to youngsters for several months and then change direction just because she turns 18. I think they simply decided that teen-and-younger girls are “her market” despite the fact that her album sounds more HAC than Top 40. I’ll be happy if I’m wrong and they were planning to shift to a broader strategy, because I think that’s what they should do.

  23. I think you guys are hearing more than is there.

    Most likely. It’s fun though.

I didn’t hear anything about him not being over her by Friday

I did. I believe he said “‘Friday I’ll be over you’, I mean, not literally, but that’s your song.” Somewhere close to the end of the interview (ETA: 4:55). Its hard to hear because she is talking over him for a bit.

As for this “wait till she’s 18 and change strategies” theory, I don’t buy into that.

At this point, I buy anything that would explain why Jive has not given her the proper attention. I am an optimist.

  24. Jordison:
I don’t want you to feel ignored. I just can’t comment because I don’t know much about SYTYCD. I think I said the same thing the first time you brought up the issue.
As a general proposition, I hope her music is heard as much as possible. So, yes, I think it would be great in SYTYCD.

I don’t feel ignored. I was just hoping that maybe some readers who don’t ordinarily hang out deep in the caves of deadthreadland might have some input.

Someone on Allison’s website suggested that it might be a good idea to link up Allison’s fans with Orianthi’s fans. I made a joke about Allison learning to play the guitar like Orianthi, but, seriously, if Allison could play like Orianthi, or Orianthi sing like Allison, it would be incredible.

Also, any comments about Still Breathing being a natural for an AI survival song?

  26. RT @TeamIraheta: @AllisonIraheta will be on 1027KIIS-FM tonight from 7-10 with @jojowright Tune In

Here’s a picture of Allison with JoJo Wright. He’s smiling with his arm around her. She’s pointing at him. What does this mean??? :)

    http://twitpic.com/zr7up

  27. Allison’s wow-n-point: that’s her trademark “look who I am hanging out with, sonzzzzzz”.
Still Breathing: I don’t think is a “natural” send-off song. I still think that, from all the past-season releases, Gokey’s “Best Days” is probably the more appropriate song. Obviously, they don’t have to, and generally don’t, go with an ex-idol’s song.

  28. RT @JoJoWright: Schedule Change: @ALLISONIRAHETA playback – tomorrow night!

    Rescheduled for Tuesday night.

  29. LoveDaRocker: Still Breathing: I don’t think is a “natural” send-off song.

jordison wasn’t talking about it being a send-off song — he was talking about it being a survival song when contestants make it through Hollywood Week.

  30. Oh, ok. To be honest, I didn’t know there was such a song category/type in Idol. So I assumed Jordison was referring to the send-off song. I don’t really get into Idol (i.e., sit down and watch the show on TV) until semifinals. So maybe that’s why it didn’t click.
So, yeah, it seems that SB would fit that scenario.
With the exception of the send-off/exit song, I don’t think a song has to be 100% on point (like when “Pieces” was used). If the melody and music sound good for the piece, and the chorus does not completely counter the situation, it would work.
Again, any use of any of Alli’s songs in (almost) any setting is welcome.

  31. Oops, I totally missed this post. I’m so used to hanging out in the underground caves – but I guess I’m back down there again anyway!

Very nice interview – with good stories. I especially liked the tour stories (what she said about hearing the crowd, even though she couldn’t see them) and Burrito’s name (“nooo, burrito”), funny!

jordison – I am a sporadic watcher of SYTYCD and I thought your ideas were genius, very creative. I should have said so earlier. Maybe next summer we’ll see some of your ideas come to fruition.

I think it would be nice if she could play the guitar well enough to accompany herself on an acoustic version of a song, but I don’t think she needs to be a virtuoso. I’m very happy just to watch her sing. (BTW – I think Orianthi is a terrible singer and a bit odd looking, imo.)

A pretty fun interview once you get past the obligatory discussion on how to pronounce Allison’s name (Iraheta, with a long I, peeps)

I think she should just nicely tell the interviewer the correct pronunciation and move on. No more back-and-forth discussions. I also think it sounds like she’s disrespecting herself a bit to say it doesn’t matter.

    That is correct.

Agreed. I think a snippet of Still Breathing, not the whole song, would work fine. And, it’s very catchy.

    alli lurker:

jordison – I am a sporadic watcher of SYTYCD and I thought your ideas were genius, very creative. I should have said so earlier. Maybe next summer we’ll see some of your ideas come to fruition.

Actually, I was hoping someone who knows dance, obviously outside of our underground caves, could either validate or refute this. I admit that I know very little about dance, or the mechanisms of 19E, etc. But, thank you for the compliment!

(BTW – I think Orianthi is a terrible singer and a bit odd looking, imo.)

I think she is a very ordinary singer, but an exceptional guitar player. That’s why I was saying (really joking, like saying “if only she could paint like Picasso”) that it would be great if Allison could upgrade her guitar playing to Orianthi’s level. Someone on Allison’s website had introduced the idea of trying to introduce Allison’s fan base to Orianthi’s, and I was wondering if anyone over here had an opinion about that.

I think she should just nicely tell the interviewer the correct pronunciation and move on. No more back-and-forth discussions. I also think it sounds like she’s disrespecting herself a bit to say it doesn’t matter.

I agree. Also, I think maybe she should cool it a little bit on the self-deprecating stuff, such as “I’m lazy, I was the sloppiest girl on the bus, etc.” Obviously she would not have accomplished everything she has musically if she were as lazy as it sounds. Although she should “stay true to herself,” she needs to do a little more self promotion in the limited time she has in her interviews.

As to Burrito – If we ever run out of things to talk about (e.g., hair in the eyes, flirting DJs, T-Rex hand, etc.) I would be happy to go into a discussion of parrot behavior, and why it is not unusual for Burrito and Allison to fight all the time. We own an African Grey, and she goes at it the same way with our son. Something about flock behavior and pecking order.

Final note on Burrito: Saw a twit pix of Burrito’s cage, and it’s too small for a parrot of that size. Allison, if, in your spare time, you visit us down in the caves, think about upgrading the bird cage.

  33. Guitar: I think that it would be a great investment for her to learn guitar. Not only will she look cool, but also, it should help her create her own music.
Burrito: I also saw that picture with Burrito by the cage, and it looks very small. No wonder Burrito is pissed :-).
Her name: I feel her pain. I have a Spanish name and, somehow, I don’t feel comfortable trying to correct people when they mispronounce it. I have never said “it doesn’t matter”, because it does, but I am pretty forgiving about it.

I hope she stops saying “I never thought I would make it that far (to 4th)” – because we all know she should have made it farther.

Sometimes I wonder if she’s got some self esteem issues (don’t all 17 year olds?) – when I see the hair in the face, and how she sometimes turns around at the end of the song, and even just some of her movements on stage. Hopefully she’ll outgrow it. She’s so much better than most singers I’ve seen.

Interesting note about the bird… I knew someone who gave up their cockatoo because he bit their young son.

  35. Interesting note about the bird… I knew someone who gave up their cockatoo because he bit their young son.

Just a fact: parrots bite – even the best of them. They can love you (or not) and still bite you – it’s just another way of them communicating. However, there are bites, and there are BITES.

I once saw a bumper sticker: Happiness is biting my parrot back.

  36. ALR
I hope she stops saying “I never thought I would make it that far (to 4th)” – because we all know she should have made it farther.

Hey fangirl, I don’t know if our opinion is objective enough :-).

Sometimes I wonder if she’s got some self esteem issues (don’t all 17 year olds?)

    I sure hope not.

  37. I also think it sounds like she’s disrespecting herself a bit to say it doesn’t matter.

I don’t think so. After a while, you just get used to people mangling your name. Nobody knew how to pronuounce my name or last name when I was studying in the US. As long as it sounded somewhat similar to my name, it was ok to me. No disrespect, just no arguing over that stuff. As for self esteem issues, I think she had them but I’m pretty sure she’s gotten over them, she seems pretty comfortable in her skin and with herself. The hair in her face isn’t her decision I doubt her performance style reflects anything other than her feeling the music. Turning her back to face her band is a sign of respect for them, not disrespect to herself. She calls herself “pretty awesome” in this short interview, so there you go:

    http://bit.ly/9lC8ku

There’s nothing wrong with admiting your shortcomings. I’ve accomplish a lot professionally, that doesn’t stop me from sometimes considering myself pretty lazy.

  38. I think the mellowness/jokes about her name and the self-deprecating comments are great. David Cook is the same way. It makes them more real. When you’ve got the goods, you’ve got the goods, and that’s what counts. I’ll take the self-deprecation any day over certain other performers who condescend to the audience by saying that if they don’t like the performance, they just don’t get it.

  39. Here’s my iTunes file (not mp3) of Allison’s FIBOU/JLY medley on KIIS-FM tonight:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?jytxkg5niuo

The sound quality is better than the Radio Disney performance (download my mp3 here), but unfortunately, they cut it before the second verse of JLY. Also, her voice was too far back in the mix on JLY, for the verse at least, and I thought the Radio Disney performance was better overall. Still, that verse of JLY sounded beautiful.

  40. I’ll take the self-deprecation any day over certain other performers who condescend to the audience by saying that if they don’t like the performance, they just don’t get it.

This. Creating an image is a tricky business. I could not stand Scott’s constant self-promoting during tour interviews. Not to mention, Tatiana Del Toro’s delusions of grandeur.
A milder situation occurred with Anoop, who some people saw as condescending. I didn’t.
So, overshooting towards the self-deprecating might be the way to go in this business.

  41. BTW, I checked out Orianthi. That girl is crazy talented! I don’t know if her guitar skills will transfer into solo record sales. But she has a great look, cute accent, unassuming personality, and big time supporters. I think she’ll be a player in the music industry for years to come, both playing with others, and by herself.
Allison does not need to learn guitar at that level.

  42. I wonder why mj hasn’t posted that radio stuff from last night yet. She may be busy.

In any case, hilarious as usual and gorgeous performance of Scars.

  43. I wasn’t really serious. That would be like saying Kris Allen needs to learn guitar like Eric Clapton.

I figured. It would be cool if she could. Kris did a guitar solo on tour on one of his songs and most people liked that a lot.

  44. Just to spark the flames in the “How you spell your last name”, that’s not the way “Iraheta” is spoken around here in El Salvador (where Allison’s parents come from), but anyway most foreign names (not only spanish) are anglicized, and it is easier going with the flow.

  45. Name: Yeah, roquemocan, we didn’t even go there. It’s a given that the “right” pronunciation here is the anglicized one. But, technically, it’s wrong too.
@ JoJo: Good gig, good interview, and good plug for the album.
JLY @ JoJo: She lowered the bridge. Not sure if I like it more. I have always said that the original bridge is a too high. Will need to listen a few times to give a final verdict. My guess is that, because she sang 4 songs (or 3 1/2 if you count FIBOU as 1/2), she lowered the bridge to save her voice.
FIBOU @ JoJo: This is the best acoustic version of that song so far.
Jakisson: There is a video of Disney DJ Jake and Allison on the Alliholics page. Very cute. He dropped one other “pick-up” lines on her: something about the bus smelling pretty.
