Monday Morning Mediabase Update – Jan 18-24

Daughtry’s latest song “Life After You” is also now their latest Top 10 song. In fact, Daughtry has two top 10 songs now with their current single Top 10 on HAC and their previous single Top 10 on AC (actually, returning to the Top 5). Also hitting milestones this week are Adam with his single becoming his first top 30 hit (on Pop) and Mandissa notching another Top 15 song on CAC.

Pop looks ready for some major moves. There are lots of songs ready to go recurrent and lots of songs dropping like stones. LLWD has managed to claw it’s way up to top 21 this week so it’s now in a position to start pushing songs recurrent itself. Should be another interesting week on that chart.

Here are your Monday Morning Mediabase Updates for airplay as of 2:47 pm of 01/24/10 after the jump (trying to be consistent with the peaks and Idol Chatter).

  2. Yay Adam for breaking into the Top 30 on Pop!
And for improving his itunes position so much from last week (even though it’s now less than it was a few days ago, where it peaked #17, I think? But I’m sure it’ll rise again…)

  3. I am sure others MMV, but I think that at this point we can call WWFM a hit (not a monster or huge hit (yet), but a hit nonetheless). Top 30 pop, top 40 hac, top 20 and 30 on itunes, 2 weeks on the AT40, frequently played on large market countdown shows….to me, that is a hit. Hopefully it will get some adds this week and continue growing.

  4. mmb- I will not call it a hit before I hear it on the radio in my country!!!

Just kidding!!! I think you’re right- from the dry stats- it seems to be modest hit- and I’m certain it’s still very much on the way up- so all’s well!

I’m really curious to see what happened with album sales this week… really trying to keep my hopes down, so’s not to be disappointed if the Oprah bump turns out to be minor…

  5. It looks like both Kris and Adam are doing well on the charts. Congratulations to both of them. LLWD is now a top 10, 20, 30, and 40 hit all at once. That is pretty cool.

    Kris Allen:
    “Live Like We Are Dying”: ^10 HAC (10), ^21 Pop (24), ^35 AC (37), ^46 CAC (53)

  6. Heh, I am more conservative. I’ll call WWFM a hit when and if it enters top20, just because top30 is not enough to solidify his career. (Adam probably needs a top10 hit even.)

  7. mmb- I will not call it a hit before I hear it on the radio in my country!!!

  9. How long does a song need to be out before it’s up for recurrent? Someone said LLWD had 8 or 9 weeks left. I know about the under 20 rule.

Yeah for Adam!!! Only half of the pop stations added him so he still has alot of stations he can pick up. Hopefully he can get the adds this week. His video comes out this week, he’s on Ellen tomorrow, CD is released
to Brazil, Canada promo, Grammys Sunday,
AOL sessions…..lots of Adam this week.

Does anyone know where they charted on At40?

  10. WWFM is still on #39 on AT40, don’t know about LLWD (maybe #26-27?).

mmb- I will not call it a hit before I hear it on the radio in my country!!!

come to nyc….wwfm and llwd are on the radio all the time

Thanks mmb! I was actually in NYC this past August- and had an AMAZING time: Hotdogs, museums, musical on Broadway every night- oh yeah- except for the night I went to Albany and saw BB (yeah, and the others) LIVE!!!
One of the best experiences EVAH!
Don’t know when I’ll ever be able to afford the flight there again, but NYC ROCKS, and I’d love to come visit again! :-)

  12. How long does a song need to be out before it’s up for recurrent? Someone said LLWD had 8 or 9 weeks left. I know about the under 20 rule.

For the pop chart, a song has to be in the Top 40 for 20 weeks before being eligible to go recurrent.

  13. WWFM is still on #39 on AT40, don’t know about LLWD (maybe #26-27?).

    27.

  14. Kirsten, how many more spins did Daughtry get this week that he was able to jump ahead of LLWD on HAC? LAY is signficantly lower ranked on itunes, but HAC and AC really like the song, so I’m curious.

  15. WWFM got 3 OHP spins this week… I guess all is well in radio-land.

I’ve never understood why people place so much importance on OHP spins. IMO, the main thing about them was that people get to hear the song, and that maybe it’s heard by people who are in a market where no station is playing the song on a regular basis.

The downside of these spins is that the loss of even one could result in a negative spin update the next week. WWFM is at a point that it shouldn’t have to rely on OHP spins to inflate its spin totals, stations actually spinning and adding the song should be the real focus.

  16. Kirsten, how many more spins did Daughtry get this week that he was able to jump ahead of LLWD on HAC?

From this morning’s HAC chart, LAY has a spincrease of 175 spins to LLWD’s spincrease of 119 (a difference of 56). LAY has 2,559 to LLWD’s 2,548 spins (a difference of 11). LAY is also being spun on slightly more stations (98 vs 96) while LLWD is getting slightly more spins per station 26.5 vs 25.8).

  17. Thanks Kirsten! Those two songs really are neck and neck! (that sounds wierd! LOL)

  18. LLWD should end up this coming week on HAC anywhere between #7 & #9 – will pass KOL for sure, and maybe Uncle Kracker, depending on how quickly that continues to fall. Hopefully will hold off John Mayer another week, and who knows what will happen with Daughtry – they’ve been going back & forth the past few days.

Pop should be really fun – LLWD has had some great updates for several days in a row and has good momentum. Should end up at least #19 this week, and maybe even #18 – Britney is dropping like a rock, so she could fall below LLWD by the weekend. LLWD has had about 9 lives on Pop so far, and seems to be very healthy right now.

It’s fun to see LLWD charting on four formats! Kris has a lot of crossover appeal.

WWFM is looking good to move up on Pop this week, too – lots of songs dropping right now and Kris will help out & push at least one song recurrent. Not sure what WWFM is doing on HAC now, will have to wait & see.

    Thanks for the numbers, Kirsten!

  19. It should be interesting to see what happens on CHR this week. Kris should definitely pass Cascade but definitely be passed by Jason DeRulo. Which means that making top 20 is going to depend on what’s going on with Beyonce, Kelly, and Britney. My guess is that he passes one of those, but we’ll have to see—sometimes, the spincreases change a lot in the middle of the week, and a song that you think is going to drop out of the top twenty hangs on for another week.

  20. Is today HAC adds day? I hope WWFM picks up some stations as it appears this is where Adam has been focusing his radio interviews lately.

I just listened in on the Canadian interview this morning, more questions about Queen and old stuff. At least Adam was gracious and charming as usual.

  21. I find the whole duscussion about different radio stations in the USA to be intriguing! My country’s so small, and most stations play all types of music (except for a very few specific stations…) and there can be different programmes that are more “genre- oriented”- but not the whole radio station!
But the USA is (are?) so huge, I guess it has to be devided into different sorts of stations playing different sorts of music…

    Anyway- it’s really interesting :-)

  22. Does anyone have information on AL / KA album sales? I have not been able to find a good site to track this. Thanks :)

  23. Does anyone know why Mediabase only does a CAC chart, and not a Christian CHR chart? LLWD is getting 240-ish spins a week on the BDS Christian CHR chart, but only 50-ish on the CAC Mediabase chart, so the overall spin counts on CHR are much higher….. Just curious.

  24. Wow to that itunes jump (even if it backed off from the peak last week) for WWFM! That HUGE bump last week was mainly due to Oprah, but the fact that it is still holding strong on itunes has me happy :-)

I’ve never understood why people place so much importance on OHP spins. IMO, the main thing about them was that people get to hear the song, and that maybe it’s heard by people who are in a market where no station is playing the song on a regular basis.

IMO OHP was more important in the beginning – it’s where WWFM was first spun, and where it got it’s first radio love, and that held a lot of importance early on because it’s a widely syndicated show, so it was played throughout the country just by one show, but got a nice boost of airplay around the country (as opposed to, say, being individually added by all those stations).

But I agree, OHP is a nice bonus now, but where it all comes at this point is more day-to-day airplay throughout the country, with more cities adding the songs, etc.

  25. I’m in Alabama indefinitely and I hear LLWD on more than one station. I haven’t heard Adam yet.

Wish Lava Girl would get some love. :-(

  26. I also don’t understand the importance given to OHP. Case in point, WWFM is on OHP a lot, but I don’t think LLWD is like that on OHP from what I recall.

Also, I think LLWD will break top 20 on CHR – I think he will pass both Britney and Cascada so even if he is passed by Jason Derulo that would still put him at #20. There is even the possibility that Kelly might drop far enough for LLWD to pass her as well.

All this CHR movement should also position WWFM into the high end of the 20s once the recurrents are removed as well.

Now, if only there was as much info on the positive side for Allison.

  27. anovich: Now, if only there was as much info on the positive side for Allison.

Well, there’s some, at least. Brian Mansfield’s airplay total for FIBOU jumped from 179 the previous week to 263 last week. I don’t know how much of that is accounted for by her increased airplay on Radio Disney, but according to the Pulse board her CHR airplay has been increasing steadily over the last several days and is now at its highest level yet, 190. She also got 2 auto-adds in Michigan this morning — Grand Rapids and Saginaw.

  28. Danny song “My Best Days” has gotten 4 adds today so far from radio stations in Boise, ID Albuquerque, NM, Charleston, SC and Ft. Wayne, IN.

Also I saw that his single “I will not say Good-bye” got two spins last week on a country station in Mobile, Alabama and on an Adult Contemporary station in Lafayatte, LA.

  29. Other adds so far today.

    LLWD – 2 auto adds Top 40 & 1 add HAC
    WWFM – 2 auto adds Top 40
    FIBOY – 2 auto adds Top 40

  30. My itunes feed is showing LLWD at 21, and WWFM at 27.

WWFM also has 1 HAC add so far today (only 25% in) – come on, stations he spent all that time at recently (LA I’m looking at you!)

  31. WWFM also has 3 canadian adds today…they really seem to like him north of the border

  32. Masieta

You may be looking at the pop chart — LLWD is #21 on overall chart, #15 on pop chart

Nice updates for both Kris and Adam today. Looking good, guys! Glad to finally see some positive movement for Allison, too

  33. in addition to the adds for Adam, Kris and Allison posted above, Danny has gotten 4 adds so far today (3 automatic)

  34. Thanks, mmb – I thought about the Canadian adds too, but was too lazy to double check ;-)

And tonight the mv is up on itunes, right? (Er, I mean, on sale tomorrow, but in my case that usually means around midnight tonight)

And yes, itunes looking good for Adam and Kris (album update = FYE at 86 and 96, and KA at 101).

Still waiting for more adds, though, particularly in light of Adam doing all that new radio promo.

  35. I am not too pleased with how “Temporary Home” has performed so far. I love the song, I think it is beautiful, and I appreciate how much it means to Carrie, but to channel Simon for a second I think it was an indulgent choice. It doesn’t make a great single, and I fear it was a wasted spot off a great album.

  36. The HAC adds are disappointing for Adam today. (I hope I’m off a day?)

  37. One of LLWD’s (auto) adds is from WXRK in New York and it is listed as a #1 market rank. I thought Z100 had the #1 station in New York, so does this refer strictly to the “city market” and there are multiple stations who carry that rank? NYC is a huge metro area, so I’m thinking there are many top 40 stations, but just wanted to verify.

The HAC adds are disappointing for Adam today. (I hope I’m off a day?)

Nope – this is the day for HAC. Only 33% in, so it’s still early. And WWFM has always been a slower builder on HAC, for some reason (if you look at the daily spin counts, still way more positive growth on Top 40 vs HAC for him).

However, I’m really hoping with all the recent radio promo he’s been doing, plus the stronger sales of WWFM on itunes, the mv coming out and making the VH1 countdown, etc. that all of that might get more HAC stations to jump on the band wagon.

Maybe they just have some bizarre pre-disposition to think, Adam = Pop, therefore not HAC…idk.

Exactly – it’s the city rank – so LA is #2, Chicago #3, etc.

  42. That chart looks about right – I wasn’t really going overboard with my Adam prediction after Oprah – I knew he’d get a bump, but wasn’t expecting HUGE numbers. Where is Kesha? Though iirc she gets most of her sales in itunes, and that’s part of a later update.

I think i predicted 15-17K….looks like he might do a little better than that, but hard to tell
….doesn’t everyone on the planet already have subo’s cd? (well, i don’t but….)it is just astounding that she keeps selling at the numbers she is selling at, oprah or no oprah

  44. Bieber’s sales have also been amazing. I’m surprised that more publications haven’t been covering what he’s managed to accomplish.

  45. Maybe they just have some bizarre pre-disposition to think, Adam = Pop, therefore not HAC…idk.

Nah. HAC is basically supposed to be the pop chart with “hard stuff” (ie rap, extreme raunch, and hard rock) removed, and a bunch of commercial rock added in. WWFM is an adult-friendly pop song, so it should do well on that format. It’s just a slow moving chart most of the time.

I thought Adam would end up somewhere in the neighborhood of 18-22K. That might happen, we’ll see.

I hope Allison’s recent signs of life pan out. Fingers crossed!

Kris just keeps chugging along. Great for him!

Don’t get me wrong, I actually believe WWFM seems better suited to HAC (I’m using my own hometown’s HAC and POP station as comparison) – that’s why I don’t quite get the fact that it’s picked up more on POP than HAC. But, as you say, HAC is a little slower to change, so maybe it will just take more time there.

  47. Bieber’s sales have also been amazing. I’m surprised that more publications haven’t been covering what he’s managed to accomplish.

IDK – maybe we’re just looking in the wrong places, but he seems to be doing just fine in terms of getting press – it probably just tends to not be of the number crunching variety, since most of his fans could care less what numbers he’s selling (they just want to know if he’s got a girl friend or changed his hair, or whatever).

  48. Thanks mmb and Mary102 for the verification of the market ranking on the add board. I’m happy then that LLWD picked up another #1 market station! Go Kris! (A good week for Adam and WWFM, too!)

  49. And another Top 40 for WWFM. Come on HAC!

I thought the video would help as well.

  50. Heard FIBOU on the radio this morning. I almost rear ended the car in front of me.

  51. Lol, JR Labrador. Easy there ;-)

And another Top 40 for WWFM. Come on HAC!

I thought the video would help as well.

Yeah, idk – I tend to agree with the earlier comment that HAC is just slower with the changes, so may not be making room for as many new songs now. With Adam putting in the new effort with these stations, though, I was hoping for a little more reciprocity (though I know it’s not a given, of course). Still, with WWFM actually doing well on the charts, it’s not like it’s some brand new, unknown commodity that the stations are having to take a gamble on. I mean, if it’s good enough to be on Z100 and some of the other top stations, it should be good enough for DC (not that I’m calling anyone out ;-))

  52. Well, are there a lot of new releases by established HAC acts lately? That might slow things down a bit as well. My (completely uninformed) impression of HAC is that they LLLOOOVVVEEEE their staple acts, and are much more loyal to them than pop. So if a bunch of the recent kings of the format are dropping stuff, Adam may just have to wait a bit.

I could be totally wrong though. Some real radio peeps around here will set me straight if I am.

  53. tinawina, that’s very possible. IIRC there is less movement once you get high on HAC, so maybe those favs stay on a lot longer. Can’t believe KOL Sex on Fire is still getting adds – didn’t that peak an eternity ago? Or is it just me?

ETA: Yeah, WWFM now has 2 HAC, and 4 Top 40 adds for today – still looking much stronger on Top 40. And only 25% in for Top 40 (not counting Canada adds, too lazy to look up – lol).

  54. Whoa, what? Adam just said the album was gold in Canada and US? I’m listening to the Kiss925 interview right now..

I think I heard him right.

  55. Radio stations in Atlanta and Las Vegas have just added Danny’s song.

  56. Whoa, what? Adam just said the album was gold in Canada and US? I’m listening to the Kiss925 interview right now..

Gold in Canada is only 40K, so it’s not that hard to believe.

  57. Yeah, I think he is officially gold in Canada, but don’t think yet for the US (but I can’t hear the interview right now – have to catch it later tonight).

  58. And only 25% in for Top 40 (not counting Canada adds, too lazy to look up – lol).

Still 3 — 2 top 40 and 1 hac. the canada adds include stations in toronto and calgary…

  60. LLWD has five adds so far today.
    2 Hot AC
    3 Top 40

Only two are auto adds. Allision still only has 2 Top 40 adds.

  61. What is the difference between a regular add and an “auto add”?

  62. W

hat is the difference between a regular add and an “auto add”?

auto adds means that mediabase added the song to a station’s playlist, manual adds means the stations Program Director added the song to their playlist. Auto adds happen when a station played a song a certain number of times the week before.

  63. For Kris fans who have been angsting over the lack of Top 40 airplay from the Clear Channel stations – looks like the block is starting to fall. There have been manual adds already from WHYI in Miami and WLAN in Lancaster (both only gave LLWD token countdown spins last week) – also KHKS in Dallas has not added yet, but has given LLWD two daytime spins already today.

  64. The Clear Channel adds and spins of LLWD are such good news. They are going to help keep LLWD in the top 20, and hopefully the top 15 for a long time.

  65. Nine adds for Danny today; great.

Country moves slowly, but he’s going up every week.

  66. Glad to see Danny getting so many adds on Country – hope he does well.

  67. Guess we’ll be waiting another week or two before more HAC adds of WWFM, but thank you Pheonix and Reno!

  68. Nice to see that 2 of Kris’s non-automatic Top 40 adds are Clear Channel stations. I read on the Pulse board that a good % of the stations yet to add LLWD are owned by Clear Channel. So maybe more of them will add LLWD now.

  69. Good to see Danny getting a lot of adds. I’m not sure how quickly the country charts move, especially in relation to Top 40 and Hot AC — he seems to be moving up slowly but steadily. Hopefully he will see some growth in terms of sales as well

  70. Good to see all the Idols doing so well on the radio charts. Great that Clear Channel is finally opening up to Kris and ‘Live Like We’re Dying’.

I wish Allison was getting more radio play and exposure, but I guess it will come in time.

  71. doesn’t everyone on the planet already have subo’s cd? (well, i don’t but….)it is just astounding that she keeps selling at the numbers she is selling at, oprah or no oprah”

Hey if being on Oprah is good enough for Adam to get a “bump” in sales why not Susan Boyle? I would have thought Oprah’s audience would be more inclined to buy Subo’s album than Adam’s anyway!!

Thanks to everyone on here who deciphers these charts for those of us not from the US otherwise I would have no idea what a Clear Channel or HAC chart is!! So following on others lead it is good that Kris is now getting exposure on the Clear Channel!!

  72. Way to go Daughtry! It’s funny how close a race LLWD and Life After You are running, seems like they are always side-by-side. And with LLWD displacing Daughtry from #1 to #2 on the VH1 countdown, it’s interesting to see Daughtry switching positions in the opposite direction on this chart.

Also proud of Kris, though I like ‘Life After You’ much better, I have to admit, LLWD is definitely starting to grow on me (and I do hear it played quite a bit on the radio).

  73. So Kris and Adam both got 6 adds today (plus 3 additional Canadian adds for WWFM) and Allison got 2. Danny had a really nice day, getting 10 adds.

  74. Any guestimates on singles sales for LLWD and WWFM? Kris sold 69+K last week and Adam (for WWFM only) sold 37+K. Based solely on iTunes rankings on Sunday compared to where there were last week, I would think Kris’s sales will drop, although probably not by a lot, while Adam’s should jump a decent amount. I’m thinking LLWD will outsell WWFM, but it should be pretty close.

Has anyone seen any predictions on this stuff?

  75. Really happy to see Allison getting some adds, hopefully she will get more next week.

  76. Been wanting to ask this for a long time…What is HAC?

HAC = Hot Adult Contemporary. Think pop with less urban and more rock. It skews to an older fan base than pop, but a younger fan base than AC. Also, it tends to be a lot more current than AC.

  77. Hey if being on Oprah is good enough for Adam to get a “bump” in sales why not Susan Boyle? I would have thought Oprah’s audience would be more inclined to buy Subo’s album than Adam’s anyway!!

But then, I also would have assumed Oprah’s audience would be the kind to already OWN the SuBo cd ;-) Guess not all of them.

  78. Any guestimates on singles sales for LLWD and WWFM? Kris sold 69+K last week and Adam (for WWFM only) sold 37+K. .

Hard to say since llwd was rankes higher than wwfm for a few days and then the situation flip flopped and then flip flopped again…. i predict that llwd will outsell wwfm by a very slim margin but would not be at all surprised if the opposite happens…both songs will do well this week

  79. Congrats to Kris for cracking the Top 20 o the Mediabase Pop chart
