Alex Lambert Practices “Butterflies” With His Band

Former American Idol contestant and If I Can Dream housemate, Alex Lambert now has a band. Watch them work up an acoustic arrangement of the song “Butterflies” in this 20 minute clip.

This is one of my favorites of the new songs Alex has debuted on the show. I could easily hear the tune’s cool vibe on adult alternative radio.

Check it out after the jump.

  1. The question is whether alternative radio would even play it? They scorn everything connected to Idol, so if Alex’s mgmt wants this to have any chance of getting spins, they would have to make sure to erase any trace of Alex being connected to AI

  2. Watching the live feed on IfICanDream.com, we learned that his former roommate from Hollywood Week, Samuel Larsen, was invited to play guitar with the band during the upcoming Sunset Strip Music Festival, and that they have also hired a keyboard player. The dark-haired guitarist is the step-brother of the twins, and he will be going back to England soon.

They have rented rehearsal space for five days next week.

  3. Funny how Simon Fuller had no problem seeing the appeal of yet another “boring white guy with guitar (WGWG)”! ;-)

I actually really like this. And what it proves, to me anyway, is that with the right support (in the form of time, money and connections), you can help even the most ill-prepared performer (who routinely looked like he was going to pee his pants on stage) produce a good pop song.

Folks on the Knoll think I’m barking mad, but I’ve often wondered if Alex wasn’t one of the “chosen ones” last season who got booted off before he got his “Idol makeover.” I guess we’ll never know, but I think it’s pretty clear that Alex had a lot of potential, and a huge online fanbase, that made him worth the risk. (His asshattery towards some fellow Idol contestants notwithstanding.)

  4. I really like this song and imo, it sounds very radio friendly…to me anyways. Does anyone know the names of the guys in his band? The one guy looks like a very young Sebastian Bach to me. They’re all cute kids.

  5. BootStar, I don’t think you’re barking mad. LOL I think you are right. Nobody could have predicted how nervous Alex would be on stage. I think it was that lack of stage presence that got him booted. I don’t think his mullet earned him any fans either. But it doesn’t bother me. I think he has a great voice and a very radio-friendly sound.

It looks like he’s on his way to putting together a good band. They’re cute, too.

  6. @Dlynne-Its interesting, because when you see Alex’s official video for- I Didn’t Know-,and demos,he must have developed a tremendous amount of confidence,in the several months that he’s been on IICD;he has a lot of inner fire now(he always had the talent),whereas on Idol,I guess that was lacking…

  7. jaybee, who knows what was going through Alex’s head when he was on the show! He could have been intimidated by some of the others who had more experience on the stage or the prospect of being judged turned out to be too much pressure for him. Or, it could have just simply been stage fright. If I’m not mistaken, he said that he hadn’t sung in front of many people before. Maybe he’ll talk about it at some point.

He exudes confidence in the I Didn’t Know video, though, I agree. Maybe the hands-on attention of Simon Fuller has given him the confidence he needed. He’s hella talented for sure.

Well sure. Simon Fuller’s been blowing butterflies and rainbows up his butt. I’m sure being told he’s a STAR! in the making is doing wonders for his confidence.

What I want to know is, when does Simon Fuller announce Alex’s record deal with UMG that’s bound to happen? As soon as Sony’s rights in the season 9 Idols expire or sometime later?

Seriously, Alex sounds like someone I heard on the radio the other day… same kind of voice (from what I could hear through the auto tune; not Alex – the other guy). At least Alex’s voice sounds good without mechanical enhancement when he’s not so nervous he’s going to vomit. Too bad about the personality though.

BootStar, you’re not crazy. Alex was the diamond in the rough who didn’t shine soon enough to catch on with the Idol audience probably due to unexpected and crippling stage fright, but I do believe the PTB wanted him to stick around a long time – and maybe even win.

  9. Alex Lambert’s voice doesn’t appeal to me but I agree with BootStars theory about the chosen one, it’s as good as any other theory anyway.

I didn’t think he came across bad at all on Idol. He didn’t appear especially nervous, though if I recall right, he and the judges talked about it. I was surprised he didn’t get enough votes to continue. I voted for him.

I think (maybe due to nervousness) he didn’t come across as a very interesting performer to enough people.
