Hans is in the Top 10? He’s amusing, but basically a joke act.

A couple of notes: Remember season 5 winner, singer/songwriter Michael Grimm? The singer resurfaced to compete on AGT: Champions. This year’s acts, Ryan Niemiller, V. Unbeatable, Tyler Butler-Figueroa, and Luke Islam also returned to compete. However, the most recent winner Kodi Lee did not compete. Remember, 2018 winner Shin Lim won both the summer show and Champions.

There are four weeks of auditions. Each week, the studio audience chose two acts, the judges saved one act, and a golden buzzer determined another spot. Twelve acts competed in the semi-finals.

Last season, results were determined by a vague group of  voters that represented all 50 states. Voters were NOT part of the studio audience, but off stage somewhere voting for acts. For season 2, the audience votes determine who stays and who goes. But the show is holding on to the “all 50 states” conceit.

Recently, the show called out for folks to apply to be an AGT “Superfan”.  During the application process, potential fans indicated the state where they lived in addition to the state they most identified with. I pointed out that the process left a ton of leeway for producers to dub anyone a representative of a particular state.  Conceivably, Californians could make up the entire studio audience, as long as they came from somewhere else (most of them do!).

The blog Reality Blurred posted an interesting tidbit about last season. According to their sources, the show was competing with the new CBS talent show World’s Best, with some AGT acts ending up there.  Lucky for NBC the show was a ratings dud and is likely never coming back.
