Adam Lambert Explains the Michelin Man Photo

Remember the crazy “Michelin Man” photo that leaked from the photo shoot for Adam Lambert’s album cover? Adam tells MTV news that the photo is one of the looks that will appear as part of the CD artwork.

“It’s funny, because when you take something like that out of context, it kind of looks silly, like the Michelin Man, ” Lambert told MTV News. “But in context, in the set that we had, which you didn’t see in the leaked photo … it works…[The look] was supposed to be kind of high-fashion, avant-garde ‘space, ‘ and I think it works really well, actually.”

It’s the look Adam dons when he takes a trip back home…to Planet Fierce! Heh.

  1. So, Adam knows the name given to his outfit “Michelin Man”, LOL.

I ´m eager to see all the artwork for his album.

Love the way he thanked the leaker of the pic :-)

  2. Adam sometimes you have to look in the mirror and say, maybe I shouldn’t wear this. Anything that makes you look like something they sale in a tire store is not a good thing.

  3. Wonder if he is going to have a matching dog, like the Michelin man does?

I am sorry, just couldn’t help myself-

I have sold fine art, sometimes avant garde is not pretty, it is just visually stirring and striking….

  4. well… i sure am eager to see what the “context” is so at least it got us thinking/commenting/curious. that’s what adam does best!

i love crazy high fashion projects. my favorite episodes of ProjRun are the avant garde ones… they are the most fun and require tons of creativity. cant wait to see all the crazy outfits adam will have in the years to come!

  5. Eeek, I keep following this particular news story around MJs blog. Sorry to spam so many threads, but I didn’t know this was getting it’s own posting.

Anyway…here is some info about David Bowie’s ‘Ashes to Ashes’ video and the costume he wore ‘“ back in MTV’s heyday. Looks like Adam may not be as far out on a limb as we think:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashes_to_Ashes_(David_Bowie_song)

I’m gonna trust him on this, he didn’t say it was the cover, just part of the artwork. It’s weird, sure. But I’m willing to see what the final product looks like.

  6. Thanks, Rowenaaine, for the perspective- do love Wiki!

We have to trust that Adam and his peeps are not going to make him appear ridiculous, but rather, cool, striking and cutting edge.

Still would like to see a matching dog, though (dunks)

Wonder if he is going to have a matching dog, like the Michelin man does

  8. I don’t care what the context is. It was a terrible idea for an outfit, and practically everyone agreed on that. But if that’s how he wants to look on his cd artwork, that’s his choice.

  9. It’s the look Adam dons when he takes a trip back home’ ¦to Planet Fierce!

I would love to visit that place.

  10. bridgette12,
The dog can wear a bedazzled collar, with matching bedazzled leash, with his matching Michelin man outfit….

Boy, I sure love Adam, but it is going to take a LOT of convincing that THAT look works on him……

  11. [Brought over from the headlines thread]

I know everyone is just having fun with the Michelin outfit comments, but I think you all should be excited about how it turns out not worried!!

Adam is a creative genius! He envisions things that most of us can’t envision; he sees things that other people don’t see. Sometimes he’s gonna hit the mark, and sometimes he’s gonna miss, but I’m pretty darn sure that he’s never going to stop creating. Those pictures, ideas, and images floating around in his head aren’t just going to stop some day.

I love almost everything Adam does even when I don’t “like it.”

That comment might not make sense when you first read it, but it’s the truth! I just love the buzz he gives my brain when he changes it up, tries something new, looks a little dorky, and then fabulously sexy!

Who knows about the Michelin photo? The final version may include only a sliver of the hair, or it will be from the side, or it will be a picture of him looking up into a camera, or lying down, or god knows what!! Maybe only the slightest hint of the suit will show up in the final version. Maybe there will be props. I’m looking forward to finding out.

And, if the picture just looks completely OTT, I’ll be the first to just laugh and say I probably love it anyway just because it’s something completely new.

I love novelty, and for people who love novelty, Adam just keeps offering up the hits. The newness and novelty is what makes it all fun for me, even when it’s OTT.

    Stay on the cloud Adam!!

  12. Does anyone know what to make of this?

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=13012939#About+the+Album

I hesitated to post, thinking maybe it’s from the ‘Want’ folks. The release date is 11/10 and title is ‘Take One.’

My guess: It is from the “Want” folks …. Wouldn’t that be the kind of title they’d have? Their songs would be “Take One” of Adam Lambert — i.e., his first shot at recording. And “Take One” also kind of suggests — they may not be perfect, they’re kind of warmup ….

Okay, I’ve talked myself into thinking that this is the “Want” album. Interesting. Maybe they did some kind of deal with Walmart!!

  13. It’s the look Adam dons when he takes a trip back home’ ¦to Planet Fierce!

I would love to visit that place.

One click on Rowe’s username and you can.

  14. You forgot the bedazzled pooper scooper!

You won’t need it. The dog poops glitter.

  15. Adam sometimes you have to look in the mirror and say, maybe I shouldn’t wear this. Anything that makes you look like something they sale in a tire store is not a good thing.

    So true!

Adam is a creative genius! He envisions things that most of us can’t envision; he sees things that other people don’t see.

How do we know this was his creation. These guys have publicists, managers etc. that direct them. I haven’t seen anything that says this is his creation. As to him being a “creative genius’ if this is his idea, the jury is still out on that.

  16. capricecrane Last night, the stars were out at the Fox Reality Channel Awards, if you define “stars” as “the opposite of stars.”

This was last night – hopefully Adam didn’t win in that nomination.

  17. twinkle

well’ ¦ i sure am eager to see what the ‘context’ is so at least it got us thinking/commenting/curious. that’s what adam does best!

‘Context’ is right. I have seen some pretty outrageous photos of Adam but they are always interesting. I am looking forward to album artwork and photos. I want content like we used to get with albums and I think Adam is going to surprise us in lots of interesting visual ways that will only add to our experience with his music; like an album and its artwork should.
Adam is definitely more than just ‘liner notes’ he is OTT and we love it.

  18. I don’t care what the context is. It was a terrible idea for an outfit, and practically everyone agreed on that. But if that’s how he wants to look on his cd artwork, that’s his choice.

Agreed on all parts. But maybe this is where photoshopping can use it’s powers for good, and not evil and he won’t look completely bad and ridic? Maybe. Hopefully. Possibly. Really hopefully. Eh, I got nothin’ That picture scares me with it’s awfulness. Well scares me and makes me giggle from the lulz.

  19. How do we know this was his creation. These guys have publicists, managers etc. that direct them. I haven’t seen anything that says this is his creation. As to him being a ‘creative genius’ if this is his idea, the jury is still out on that.

I’m not saying that this ideas was Adam’s, or that this idea in particular will result in one of those “creative genius” results, I was speaking generally about his creative abilities.

I stand by my conclusion that he is a creative genius. By definition, a creative genius is going to fail occasionally. People who play it safe and always have good “style” are not going to take the risks necessary to achieve brilliance. Most people are too scared of failing so they play it safe and produce mediocrity. Adam isn’t scared of failing. I don’t think he wants to fail, but he doesn’t let fear of failing stop him.

  20. “He envisions things that most of us can’t envision; he sees things that other people don’t see.”

I hate to say this, but those people are usually called “schizophrenic”

Okay, I’ve talked myself into thinking that this is the ‘Want’ album. Interesting. Maybe they did some kind of deal with Walmart!!

Oh, Lucy, I hope not! I thought RCA/19 would have had an injunction or something against them until his real album could drop.

  22. Idk if the picture shows Adam floating in space near Planet Fierce it will seem in context to me. I’m not going to judge anymore until I see the actual picture. Maybe the Jetson family will be included in the pic?

  23. I hate to say this, but those people are usually called ‘schizophrenic’

    …..or “geniuses”….There is a fine line. ;-)

  24. My imagination brain cells must not be working very well today because I can’t imagine a scenario in which that Michelin Man suit would look good ‘” sexy ‘” interesting ??? I just want it to go away!

The only thing I’m hanging on to is nobody wants him to look goofy on his album cover’ ¦ so he/they must know what they’re doing, right? *praying*

I can appreciate avant garde, so if in context it works… well then hooooraaayy! Although if I’m being honest, anything with a “space” vibe makes me nervous.

I challenge anyone to name a movie, etc. with attractive “space” fashion. :-)

  25. I don’t care what the context is. It was a terrible idea for an outfit, and practically everyone agreed on that. But if that’s how he wants to look on his cd artwork, that’s his choice

    .

Or Rob Cavallo’s description makes more sense “A glam rock, electro pop, glam robot.”

Also Adam said it would be part of the Album’s artwork not Album cover!

  26. (Brought over from the Headlines Thread)

To think that yesterday I was almost overcome from a surfeit of great Adam news, and now today I’m back to the bad nervous feelings. Adam is a roller coaster is in a scary part today.

Truthiness: Me too! I’m practically overcome with fear! What will RCA come up with next? First, they got Adam that silly gig on that awards show. Then, Adam’s TFM video has to be shown worldwide before some movie. Lastly, there’s that appearance on some lame talkshow. I just hope RCA doesn’t try to push him to be on some late night show like SNL. It’s really hard being an Adam fan. You never know what they are going to throw at you.

I don’t trust RCA to handle the big things, so I’m sure they will screw up the small things like a picture inside a cd booklet. Do they not realize one picture could bring Adam’s rise to stardom to a complete halt? Is it too late to give Jive a call?

  27. Whether it’s a hit or miss, one thing is for certain: no other Idol contestant would have gone there. We’re in new territory.

  28. I hate to say this, but those people are usually called ‘schizophrenic’

I have several clients who are schizophrenic, and they are nothing like Adam. They have no zest or energy for life whatsoever. Most of them hear voices that make them paranoid. When they medicate, their senses are dulled. In no way are any of them visualizing the kinds of presentations that Adam must evision.

    I’ll assume you are joking here . . .

  29. rockvixen, LOL

    ‘Here comes Elroy, daughter Judy…..’

Wow, I am so old, I remember the theme song…

  30. I found this article very exciting. The fact that so much thought has gone into the image and the art of the album in addition to what we now know, from yesterday’s interviews, is a carefully thought out amalgam of music styles going into his album, gives the impression of a very particular and strategized concept to this album. What’s even more exciting is that apparently it’s a concept that Adam wants.

The album will obviously have Art with a capital A. Not just a cover picture. We are going to have our Itunes LP format, I will bet money on it.

This is sounding less and less like the usual Idol album. Squeeee I’m so excited about it.

I hope it lives up to all my expectations, but at this point, I’m really not that worried. These past couple of days of Adam taking full responsibility for the music style, choice, and even imaging – just like any other regular, non-19Evil idol victim, artist – tells me this album will not likely fail me.

    Good luck HBIC.

    Black Swan.

  31. We do know that this is the same Adam of the “subtle” fiery headdress thingy. Somebody needs to tell this boy “NO!” and stick a big pitchfork in the spacesuit. There is no context where he wouldn’t look stupid.

  32. I challenge anyone to name a movie, etc. with attractive ‘space’ fashion

    Star Trek?

  33. I’ll assume you are joking here . . .

Of course I was joking, and I apologize to those with schizophrenia for the tasteless joke.

  34. One other thing to note–Adam is taking total responsibility for the creative vision of his visual and musical presentation.

Even though many other people are contributing, he is taking ownership.

No victimhood or whining here! He’s really putting himself on the line because it it fails, he’s already taken responsibility.

It’s ok we are not offended…..Yes we are!…no we are not…Excuse me while I talk with myself….

  36. There is no context where he wouldn’t look stupid.

With all due respect, just because you can’t envision a context where it wouldn’t look stupid doesn’t mean there isn’t such a context.

Frankly, I can’t envision a context that works either, and I think he looks ridiculous, but I realize that just because I can’t see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Once I see the final version, though, I certainly won’t hesitate to express my opinion on whether it works.

ETA: Even though I pushed back on the schizophrenia comment, I certainly wasn’t offended. No worries. With the work I do, sometimes I have to laugh regarding my clients because otherwise it’s just too sad.

  37. Context, huh? lol

I came in here expecting to hear Adam explain how this was some sort of joke spawned from boredom. But it’s actual clothing used for an actual photo?

Well at least it can look “contextually” stupid when we see the final product.

  38. I admit, what I’m most looking forward to re: MM art is Adam’s brother Neil’s take on it. The man can snark :D

I’ll probably love it, lol. After all, I thought he looked great in the Burning Man pics, the ones in which he’s wearing the “leafy panties” (complete with bunches of grapes hanging off them) and the swirly orange kewpie doll hairdo. To pull off something like that, you need the courage of your weird outfit convictions, which he has in spades.

  39. I think you all should be excited about how it turns out not worried!!

Adam is a creative genius! He envisions things that most of us can’t envision; he sees things that other people don’t see.

This! We need to see the whole, which is usually more than the sum of its parts. Think of a jigsaw puzzle. I would not make fun of it ( I did not, when it was first published).

‘He envisions things that most of us can’t envision; he sees things that other people don’t see.’

I hate to say this, but those people are usually called ‘schizophrenic’

LOLLOLOL what was it that Robert Kennedy said?

‘There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why… I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?’

The man must have been schizo!!!

  41. I’ve always thought that the picture was incomplete. And that a space helmet was to be worn with it.

Am hoping that this outfit features Adam landing on Earth in a spacesuit, with a helmet – after arriving from Planet Fierce and that the album title will be “The Glittery Alien From Planet Fierce”.

    Oh, well – I can dream, can’t I ?

  42. Maybe he rips off the Michelin Man outfit as he is exitting his spaceship to reveal the gorgeous alien in the Burning Man leaf costume underneath!!!

I will be the first one to offer mea culpa when the photos in this costume works(don’t think it is going to happen, but I will be the first to apologize for laughing at it!)

  43. We do know that this is the same Adam of the ‘subtle’ fiery headdress thingy. Somebody needs to tell this boy ‘NO!’ and stick a big pitchfork in the spacesuit. There is no context where he wouldn’t look stupid.

Ya’ know, I just don’t think that Adam is the kind of artist who plans to look “pretty” all of the time. He’s clearly stated that he’s fond of pushing the envelope and taking risks.

I view him in a way, the same way I feel about Madonna. Sometimes, I think she looks really lovely. Other times, I think she looks just plain weird. But it’s never dull!

I think if fashion choices are a big part of one’s criteria for liking a recording artist, Adam may not be the guy for them. He really does appear to enjoy the adventure in art, and he sure doesn’t seem to stay in the same artistic place too long.

It’s doubtful that he’ll stay true to some “ideal” that the viewers interpreted from a TV show. He’s creative, and he’s going to keep creating. I suspect that I’m not going to like it all. But I’m guessing there will be some good stuff. And I can just ignore the stuff where he’s being just plain weird :)

  44. Well, at least we know it’s not the cover! Hopefully it will be hidden amongst all the “artistic,” and conceptual album artwork. I am sure this will be quite a CD package, lol.

  45. thanks for the loll on this cold gray day here..

nevertheless maybe his set was an alien planet and he was wearing the new glam NASA suit.. ;)

  46. Sunn, you are so on target with your take on this photo and how to interpret the ‘vision’ Adam has for his complete contribution to the music industry.

He has said numerous times, he is visual and wants to create art with his music and the visual mediums avilable to him (paraphrasing), video, performance, etc.

I for one can’t wait to see things I’ve never seen before. It’s exciting!

Sounds suspiciously like my college “Philosophy” textbook. Mr. Arts… is that you?

Ahhhh, but I do agree with you. I’m having a really hard time imagining a good look for that MM outfit, but I agree — It could exist. I would actually love to see it!

  48. KLI, understand that sometimes you have to have a sense of humor to deal with the sadness.

I have a son with OCD and I find myself laughing at his ‘open door, close door’ obsession all the time…

Since Adam is working real hard let us know that he is ‘pushing the envelop’ in the Michelin Man outfit photos, doesn’t it make you wonder how ‘out there’ the other photos might be???

The Michelin Man ones may be the tame ones, remember his Halloween costumes!!!

BTW, loved the Blue Blood blue man costume myself!!!

  49. I’ve always been a fan of crazy art, concept albums. I’m so glad Adam and RCA are actually putting thought into the creatives behind the album cover and inserts. It’s so rare in the pop music world now, even more so for a new recording artist and coming from American Idol. Words can’t describe how EXCITED I am for him. Even if the music doesn’t turn out as well as I hope it to be, at least I know for sure now that it’s something he’s had creative input to, something that’s true to him as an artist. Can I flail now?

I am with you, terraj. Unfortunately, we are living in a world of facts, here and now where imagination and creativity has little place.

  54. As much as I have doubts about Adam’s vision in costume design, I have no doubt about his voice. He knows it better than anyone. Anywhere he wants to go with his vocals, I’m willing to follow.

  55. It’s the look Adam dons when he takes a trip back home’ ¦to Planet Fierce! Heh.

LOL!! I LOVE this comment and totally agree. :)

  56. I am so trying to keep an open mind about the MM picture. Excuse me why I go put tape over my mouth…

  57. Sounds suspiciously like my college ‘Philosophy’ textbook. Mr. Arts’ ¦ is that you?

Sorry–I’m a lawyer. I sound sickeningly logical most of the time. You should see the stuff I write for work. That’s how my mind works, which is why I love seeing the creative stuff people like Adam can come up with!! I know it’s not gonna be me.

I have NO ABILITY WHATSOEVER to create visual art.

Heck, I can’t even pick out paint color for the bedroom.

Notwithstanding the foregoing . . . (just kidding)

  58. um Adam bb I love u but that Michelin man thing?

    NO.JUST NO.

this is like his extra tatoos.no more ugly outfits(well only 1 but still).WE NEED TO DISTRACT HIM WITH GLITTER!!!

  59. It works in context, eh? I don’t know about that but I’d rather see him do some crazy, weird things than typical boring things.

  60. I for one am super happy that there is a guy out there willing to combine music and art in the truest sense. Back when Andy Warhol managed the Velvet Underground music art and performance all merged together to change the face of music. I don’t have to understand it, but if it pushes my thinking I love it…

Makes such a change for all the sensitive guy photos out there for every other male artist these days – all looking so earnest with their instruments. Bring back a bit of over the top joy I say – it’s long past time!

  61. I think it would be hilarious if this picture ended up being the cd cover.

No, I think Adam said it would end up within the cover but not as the cover.

terraj, I’m with you. Off you go to flail now :)

  62. NOOOOO on the cover. JUST NO.

Hola, back from RL, here to read and laugh. .) And yes, he said part of the cover (I think) art. Whatever that means. Who knows with Adam? Hee.

  63. I just curious, please no hate here. Did Archuleta boy come out of the closet now? or is he waiting for future. My friend is gay he has crush.

  64. Hold on people, what am I supposed to be afraid of today? I am tired as hell from yesterday’s flailing; I even dreamed about Adam. EEK!

  65. It’s the look Adam dons when he takes a trip back home’ ¦to Planet Fierce! Heh.

You’re funny MJ, lol! Or should I say, Heh? :)

  66. You forgot the bedazzled pooper scooper!

You won’t need it. The dog poops glitter.

LOL Just spewed iced tea all over my keyboard!!!

  67. hi suebrody:) dreaming about Adam? that’s silly.who would do that

    (I do it every night;))

  68. I’ve always thought that the picture was incomplete. And that a space helmet was to be worn with it.

No, no. He needs to wear a flaming headdress with it. He wants fire!!

While I can’t imagine the context for the attire, I do realize that it could fit in perfectly in the right context, and I look forward to seeing where their creative minds took that. This is getting very exciting! Nothing boring or bland so far, at least. :)

  69. Whether it’s a hit or miss, one thing is for certain: no other Idol contestant would have gone there. We’re in new territory.

I beg to differ. Sanjaya would totally have gone there and his hair would have been even more fierce. And he would have eaten a bug while doing it. That child is fearless.

I am with you, terraj. Unfortunately, we are living in a world of facts, here and now where imagination and creativity has little place.

And everybody has an opinion. Sometimes, the Emperor’s clothes are just silly. Imagination and creativity isn’t a carte blanche to escape laughter.

  70. Hi, luv. I try not to, but after yesterday’s firestorm, I couldn’t help it. ;)

I read the article with Cantiello, our new Adam fanboy (I mean, he can’t let Lyndsey and Laura Saltman have all the fun, now can he? And he is looking SO hot these days, it is not funny). Lurrve the article. Planet Fierce, indeed. So I should worry…why now?

ETA: Sanjaya can go wherever the hell he wants and he has 1/100th of Adam’s talent, if that. Hence ending up on I’m a whatever the hell they were, get me out of here!

  71. Following Adam’s music has been exhilarating . I am open to surprises. Adam does not disappoint. Initially you get taken aback, eventually you are won over.
I would expect the Album cover to be atypical of what those who follow American Idol has seen over these years from the Am Idol alumnae .

Adam does not fit any pre existing mold. He is making his own, so there will always be surprises (and probably groans from some quarters).
Whatever that will be, it will surely make those who are casually browsing for music , check out the album, because of its different cover artwork .
And once they click on the sample music ‘“ I guess the experience will be what they call getting sonic lobotomy. You get fixated to his sound.
If you don’t become a convert- there is always the other guy or gal’s album to buy.

  72. I even dreamed about Adam

I actually did last night, too. Strangely enough, he was doing commercials for American Express. I’m not sure that I see him doing those commercials, (do they accept American Express on Planet Fierce?), but I do think that he’ll have product endorsements, and his own line of something, (make-up? jewelry? clothing? Michelin tires?), in the future.

  73. Love, love, love the sanjaya/lambert comparison. That should ruffle a few feathers.

And, you’re right — Sanjaya would wear that. So would Normund Gentle.

  74. And everybody has an opinion. Sometimes, the Emperor’s clothes are just silly. Imagination and creativity isn’t a carte blanche to escape laughter.

    lol yinyang

buuut wait adam’s an emperor right now? what about world domination?

  75. EWMichaelSlezak Tonight I promise you some scoop/ I will not make you jump through hoops/ So check back at around 11/ If you want to go to Idol heaven

Do you think that Slezak has some scoop about Adam?

  76. Well, I was totally wrong about the gray suit for the AMA awards but I will try again. Way back when I first saw the Mxxxx suit, I noticed that the glittery skin tight undershirt was separate from the balloon suit and the balloon suit neck was large enough to slip down over his body so my scenario went like this…

Space ship drops on stage –
Alien in balloon suit with helmet exits –

  77. Did Rob Cavallo say in the Yahoo interview that the album has something about ‘glam robot invasion’ ? I wonder if the outfit is for the ‘context’ of that song’ ¦

  78. I beg to differ. Sanjaya would totally have gone there and his hair would have been even more fierce. And he would have eaten a bug while doing it. That child is fearless.

LOL Well there is a reason he never got the chance, he can’t sing for shit! And as far as his fearless artistic vision goes, well there are good visions and Sanjaya visions, and never the twain shall meet. Bug eating notwithstanding ofcourse because I think that was pretty cool of him.

  79. Makes such a change for all the sensitive guy photos out there for every other male artist these days ‘“ all looking so earnest with their instruments. Bring back a bit of over the top joy I say ‘“ it’s long past time!

I agree with you. Did we think that Adam’s album are woulde be him sitting in an empty auditorium daydreaming about what could be. j/k.

    Huh?

ETA: Oh, he’s just announcing Neil’s Twitter account?

  82. Well, I was totally wrong about the gray suit for the AMA awards but I will try again. Way back when I first saw the Mxxxx suit, I noticed that the glittery skin tight undershirt was separate from the balloon suit and the balloon suit neck was large enough to slip down over his body so my scenario went like this’ ¦

Space ship drops on stage –
Alien in balloon suit with helmet exits –
    Humans recoil in fear –
Alien dancers remove helmet and pull down suit to reveal –
Beautiful glittery alien from Planet Fierce in sequined skin tight shirt and gold leather pants –
Dancing, rocking sound, and partying ensues

I remember you saying all this, and I was thinking about it when this thread came up! I’m keeping this in mind for the AMA’s :)

  83. I’m having a hard time visualizing where that outfit would look good also, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Adam!

  85. When I said that there was no context in which the spacesuit wouldn’t look stupid, I obviously didn’t consider the joy of watching it being taken off of him by troop of beautiful slinky dancers. It needs to be loose so they can do it quickly. I like that idea very much.

  86. I didn’t think Neil would join the twitter world – this could be fun!

  87. Hi all. Just wanted to add that when I heard people talking about a green snake I just shook my head and thought “oh no”. Just look what happened with the RS cover. OMG. I trust him and those working with him. It will be ok. :)

  88. October 14, 2009 at 6:18 pm
also 7 mins ago Adam tweeted ‘new work’ an a picture of drake’s artwork

Now he’s pimping Drake’s art? Just blech. Adam if he isn’t good enough to sell it on his own……well you get the idea.

Yesterday was a banner Adam today. Today, not so much.

  89. Adam shouldn’t try to push the artistic limits, cause people make fun of him.
He should give up and wear plaid.

  90. I beg to differ. Sanjaya would totally have gone there and his hair would have been even more fierce.

Please. Sanjaya “went there” on the show because he had resigned himself to being a buffoon since he couldn’t be much else. Smart kid. He made it all the way to 7th place with his schtick. But, talk about an emperor with no clothes. (Of course, that didn’t stop the VFTW crowd from oooohing and awwwwwwing about him. *shaking head in wonder*)

And everybody has an opinion. Sometimes, the Emperor’s clothes are just silly. Imagination and creativity isn’t a carte blanche to escape laughter.

Except we haven’t seen the album cover, yet. So, any opinions expressed now on the cover art are based on a pre-conceived bias. Does anyone really believe the cover is just going to be Adam in that suit? Or that Adam is the one designing the cover? Or that RCA just invested a shitload of bucks on the album only to shrug their shoulders and say, “You know what. This cover doesn’t market well. But, screw it. Let’s go for it, anyway.” I know that the woman involved in the cover design tweeted in Japanese that she was battling with TPTB to make sure it was interesting and unique. Otherwise, I’ll just wait for it.

  91. Now he’s pimping Drake’s art? Just blech. Adam if he isn’t good enough to sell it on his own’ ¦’ ¦well you get the idea.

Supporting his boyfriend how dare he! I hope Adam pimps his brothers writing too I bet Neil would write a freaking hysterical book

  92. Neil is inviting people to tweet him with questions about Adam now. Where’s suebrody?

  93. Now he’s pimping Drake’s art? Just blech. Adam if he isn’t good enough to sell it on his own’ ¦’ ¦well you get the idea.

Yesterday was a banner Adam today. Today, not so much.

I have to disagree with this because one of the things I love about Adam is his devotion to those he loves. It speaks so highly for his character. Whether we like what he’s promoting on behalf of his friends or not, I have to respect that he puts their well being ahead of what people might think of him for being their advocate.

  94. Neil is taking no prisoners, he is the opposite of Michael Sarver.

  95. Why is everyone worried about the album photos?

    1. Warwick Saint is a great photographer who has done some of the best celebrity and fashion photos of the past decade. His specialty is creative imagery and the use of computer graphic manipulation. The photos will be great.

    2. Sony/RCA has too much invested in Adam to let him do anything foolish. It is not going to happen.

    3. Trust Adam. Sometimes he does and says thing that just seem like they are going to smack him in the ass and he just come up smelling like roses.

I’m excited — we’re are going to get multiple Adam looks — so there should be something everyone likes.

    From the MTV News article:

Lambert confirmed that the much-blogged-about Michelin Man outfit is, in fact, one of the looks fans will see in Lambert’s CD artwork and said it definitely fits in with the bigger picture of what he’s going for. “[The look] was supposed to be kind of high-fashion, avant-garde ‘space,’ and I think it works really well, actually.”

Regarding Slezak — it seems like the Adam PR plan was to give the press a lot of exclusives with set release times. My expectation is that we will get a stream of Adam exclusives about 1 a day for the next few days. Some little things and a few big pieces of news. The Adam PR plan is a work of art!

  96. Now he’s pimping Drake’s art? Just blech. Adam if he isn’t good enough to sell it on his own’ ¦’ ¦well you get the idea.

So I’m guessing he shouldn’t have pimped Kris and Allison’s singles (not once, but twice) right???

Adam tweets to support his friends. Doesn’t mean he’s pimping them or that they NEED his help. He does it to show his admiration for what they’ve created. I really love that about him. Why shouldn’t Drake be included in that? He obviously cares for him alot.

  97. My expectation is that we will get a stream of Adam exclusives about 1 a day for the next few days. Some little things and a few big pieces of news. The Adam PR plan is a work of art!

As a PR major a million years ago, I have to agree. I was really worried at first because I heard that Jive was best for beginning artists and, therefore, did more initial PR, while RCA catered to the established talents and didn’t necessarily do so much in terms of promotion. All I can say about Adam’s roll-out is WOW! It’s fun and exciting, and I’d think it will be very effective. They’ve certainly thought this one through, for sure!

  98. We do know that this is the same Adam of the ‘subtle’ fiery headdress thingy. Somebody needs to tell this boy ‘NO!’ and stick a big pitchfork in the spacesuit. There is no context where he wouldn’t look stupid.

    Why?

Why should someone tell him no if it’s not endangering himself or others?

People are talking about it, right? People are thinking about it. Even if people are laughing about it, who cares? Adam doesn’t seem to mind. He has the confidence in his own creativity and that of those he’s working with to trust them and they him. Perhaps that’s why all of his collaborators rave about him. And the more he has the balls to go to places that might make him look “weird,” the more brilliant, A-list talent is going to want to work with him.

He doesn’t jump to conclusions and stifle other artists’ creativity because he doesn’t “get” it. I agree with KLI, good or bad, Adam is already owning all of it, so therefore its success or failure will ultimately ride on his shoulders.

He’s not making excuses. He’s not playing the victim. He’s not even saying, “The photographer made me do it.” He said, “You can’t yet see the big picture, be patient.” Fine with me.

Exactly why I’m a fan of Adam, Susan. He takes full responsibility for whatever is going to be on this album, cover and all. I have a lot of respect for him for that. He knows he could crash and burn, he’s said it himself. In Rolling Stone, he has this to say:

I’m hopeful. I have a great opportunity right now. There are a lot of people who want to work with me that I really respect. And hopefully it works. I’m not cocky because I’ve seen a lot of guys come off this show and bomb, so I recognize that I could crash and burn. But if I play it safe, it’s not going to work, so I might as well go for it with the same intention that I had on the show.

He always went for it on the show, and I was NEVER disappointed. Did I like some performances better than others?? Of course. Was I ever BORED??? NEVER. I’m glad that he’s going for it now. At least if he crashes and burns, it will be because of his input, because of his choices.

Before I get the lecture on how ALL the idols are subject to the same system, and ALL the idols have to put out dreck, and NONE of the idols have any creative input or power, let me just say: I’ve already heard it and whether I choose to believe Adam is like every other American Idol contestant or not is up to me. I choose not to believe.

I choose not to believe.

Agree with you. I keep hearing that an idols first album is usu dreck and don’t expect much. Adam keeps saying he has had a lot of creative input and this was confirmed by Cavallo. I think the success of an idols first album has more to do with how ready they are with their vision of themselves as an artist and the type of music they want make. From I have read Carrie Underwood had a vision of doing country music and was almost steered away from it.

  124. I still think it’s Neil – or this person channeled him very well…

….and I find it a negative one……at least the part of it where he uses a public forum to do it. Word of mouth to acquaintances and friends, fine…….but to be a public figure using a public forum to do it……not so fine in my books.

Well Adam isn’t even following him now, so that’s all I need to know.

  130. Adam keeps saying he has had a lot of creative input

As mj put up in a recent article, Blake said the same thing at the time and he, what do you know, later said that wasn’t actually the case.

. From I have read Carrie Underwood had a vision of doing country music and was almost steered away from it.

Indeed, and yet part of Carrie’s album was still pop stuff because the label didn’t just trust her and let her get her way, though they acceded to a degree. Which is what I think a wise thing would be expect, which would be acceeding to a degree.

  131. hmm I was woderung why “neil” was saying hi to random ontd_ai ppplz and knew aboutihop and the first person he followed was perez Hilton ….;)

No, Santa doesn’t have a contract with AT&T.

Wow, Where can I turn in my Adam Lambert Fanclub card? First he kisses his boyfriend. (I thought they just held hands-didn’t know icky kisses were going to be involved.) Then Adam actually has the audacity to show support for Drake’s work…what a jerk. Then to top it all off Adam answers a question about a picture that has been on the internet FOR MONTHS. (I should have dropped him back then.)
Are you kidding me? Is this the best people can come up with?

I don’t like the boob one but the others are pretty good.

  136. Susan, Natasha, Tiger – I love you guys. It can never be wrong to encourage and support artistic growth especially of those you care about.

  137. i dont think today is a “bad day for adam” AT ALL. three things happened that confirmed reasons i love him:

    1. the kiss – confirms that adam is going to live his life like HE wants to and with every freedom that he deserves gay, straight or polkadotted.

    2. the picture – confirms that adam is going to continue to follow his personal creative vision. it might not be something we all think is good but he will do what he loves and what excites him.

    3. tweet drake’s art – good or not good, it doesnt matter – it is his boyfriend’s art and he is proud of him, just like he has been of allison, kris, alison porter, cheeks, etc. which confirms the tight bonds of friendship and loyalty that he develops.

he is confident in who he is, stays true to his creative vision, and is loyal to his boyfriend and friends. in some ways i think that is better than 4 threads worth of a PR blitz because it speaks more to who he is as a person.

There’s no card, and you don’t need to turn it in. Unless maybe you have one of those fanboard numbers you have to give up or something :) You can stop being a fan of anyone at any time. I do it a lot. It’s quite easy actually.

I don’t much care what they do in their off time. If I like the music, I buy it. If I don’t, then I won’t. People are going to be who they are and do what they do. They’re not going to become the people that someone imagines them to be in their head.

Blake’s first album was with Arista, not RCA. Totally different team of people involved in that mess.

Sony has put Adam into their top two entertainment investments of the year — 2012 and MJ’s TII — that means someone very high up in Sony is involved with Adam. It takes more than RCA to do what they are doing.

  154. Have you SEEN the cover for Blake’s first CD? No, seriously, take a look and your confidence in RCA when it comes to Idol cover art may be shaken. And that’s not even taking into consideration what a 10-year-old-girl-Trapper-Keeper the inside of the booklet looks like. Even Blake came to diss it.

I’m not surprised. RCA didn’t invest in Blake. He was, to quote Simon, “A popular performer on a popular television show.” Nothing more. They basically followed the creed “He was popular enough to get to #2 on Idol, so we’ll get a gold album out of him without a lot of muss and fuss on our part.” They never marketed the guy.

I’ll still hold judgment on Adam’s cover until it actually materializes.

Blake’s first album was with Arista, not RCA. Totally different team of people involved in that mess.

You’re right. It says the label is Arista at that link. By the way it says there’s only one left in stock so you better hurry if you want it.

I can’t explain what the folks at Arista were thinking there but it seems like these labels tend to err on the side of caution with their covers. Most of them are pretty dull.

  156. It doesn’t bother me if Adam uses Twitter to promote Drake’s art .. I see it just the same as him promoting the other idol’s CD’s and his friends work .. like the jewellery he promoted a while back .. it’s our choice as to whether we take any notice of what he’s promoting and rush out to buy it … personally I have a mind of my own and won’t do something just because “Adam says” I do things if I want to and buy stuff if I like it .. I suppose there will be those who do ride on every word Adam says so may go out and buy whatever he tweets about but I guess that’s their look out.

Personally, Drake’s art isn’t my thing.

… and this whole Neil/Adam/Twitter thing has me totally confused … lol

  157. Have you SEEN the cover for Blake’s first CD?

Just did, wish I hadn’t… HOV isn’t that great either.

  158. Q3 delurking for bit to say thank you for all your input. It certainly has made the last 24 hours’ news and comments less confuzzling for me.

Lots of LULZ w/the MM

However, I must say I had always believed the leaked pic was waaaay out of context to be judged properly. Just standing still while getting a touch up was not going to showcase that ‘outfit’ – and it definitely needed to be showcased to be palatable. We’ll see the intended outcome when Adam is not inanimate but is fiercely channeling whatever far out, avant garde, artistic angle they decided to portray in the right setting.

That said, it’s fun to read some of the snark it generated. ;-)

  159. It’s a person from ontd_ai. She saw an opportunity and pounced. And did fairly well. Although the Michael Sarver tweet was pure in-joke.

Why would you do that? That sucks!

But it was hilarious! I loved every second of watching it unfold.

  160. Adam just gets stranger & stranger to me. Good Lord, I just don’t get the fascination with him at all. Adam looks hideous to me & he sounds like a girl.

  161. anyone see this?

MichelleHunter8 OMG OMG OMG Oprah Show just called me to talk to me about questions to use for @adamlambert interview on friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6 minutes ago from web

    ADam on Oprah on FRIDAY!!

  162. So is Adam on Oprah for real on Friday! Several peeps have said they got an email back about it.

  163. he sounds like a girl.

Ah. I never thought of it that way, but maybe that’s why I love his voice. I never used to like to listen to most male voices in music, especially when they were rough, gruff or too low. So Adam’s pure, higher voice probably appeals to me because it is more similar to the female singers I like.

Adam just gets stranger & stranger to me. Good Lord, I just don’t get the fascination with him at all.

I think you answered your own question! The strangeness IS the fascination. Think Lady Gaga. Some people will never get her, but she has a loyal fanbase that loves the crazy.

  164. there was someone from IDF quoted on ONTD talking about being called for interview questions too, and that he would be skyping in. oprah has been doing live shows on fridays so i think it is within the realm of possibility. i wonder what topic he is skyping in for is… (if it’s true)

  165. So is Adam on Oprah for real on Friday! Several peeps have said they got an email back about it.

    Don’t believe it until I see/hear it.

  166. I have heard that it is a phone in on Friday for Oprah but no guarantee it will be aired Friday. I will just record every day until it is aired. Also, I recorded ET (yech, now I remember why I don’t watch) but did not see Adam anywhere even though the guide listed the video.

Maybe he’s delivering a project for Donorschoose.org and they’re going to be along for the ride and then interview him? Who knows, Friday is their live show, so set your dvrs just in case!

  168. there was someone from IDF quoted on ONTD talking about being called for interview questions too, and that he would be skyping in.

Oh, I’m so bummed that it will only be a Skype interview IF in fact, it’s true.

He won’t be able to sing that way. Booo!!!

Well, Oprah is still Oprah and that’s HUGE!!

  169. i know that Oprah had a form on her web site about asking Adam questions so it is planned for some time.

Blake’s first album was with Arista, not RCA. Totally different team of people involved in that mess.

Sony has put Adam into their top two entertainment investments of the year ‘” 2012 and MJ’s TII ‘” that means someone very high up in Sony is involved with Adam. It takes more than RCA to do what they are doing.

Plus we actually know the person designing Adam’s album cover. It’s the same japanese designer who designed the gorgeous MJ “This is it” Album cover, as well as Beyonce’s last 2 albums and all the Singles coming out of them.

This is going to be a work of art.

  171. From http://www.oprah.com/tows if you click on Friday 10/16, it says:

Oprah Fridays Live: Mike Tyson & Evander Holyfield Face-to-Face
More than 10 years after their controversial fight, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield reunite on our stage. Plus, get a first look at the new Michael Jackson documentary.

  172. In regards to Adam tweeting Drake’s art, Adam is going to continue to support, not just his BF’s, but other’s, artistic endeavors that he likes and cares about. It is reflective of his personal artistic passion,

As a person who sold fine art for many years, I can say that Art is even more subjective, sometimes, than music and dance is, as it can be difficult to understand.

I believe Adam’s unselfish support of others, is a testament to a kind, nurturing and caring character. Even if some of the art or music he supports is not to my taste, I respect his need to do so. He is a fine young man.

Maby someone at Sony has a Adam crush.

I’m sure many people at Sony are crushing on Adam. :)

I’m also sure that has nothing to do with their assessment of him as marketing gold.

  174. If you look closely at this twitter account- this does look like it could be Neil

    @positiveneil

  175. I’m also sure that has nothing to do with their assessment of him as marketing gold.

To each his own crush.. :-)

  176. Even Blake came to diss it.

He did? I thought he designed it. LOL.

Are peeps really handwringing over Adam tweeting Drake’s work? OMG. Life is boring, I guess. Next thing you know they’ll be kissing in the car. Oh, wait.

  177. This thread is killing me! You people are hilarious! I really trust Adam to deliver something fresh, new, different and exciting, and even though when I first saw the MM photo, I thought it was dreadful, I am wiling to trust Adam when he says that in context, it will make sense.

I also do not believe that Adam’s album will be dreck. He has never disappointed me. Ever. So I don’t think he will now. To quote Sunn, Black Swan. And it’s on the way.

And I love that he tweets about his friends music, art etc. Why the hell not? Twitter is an amazing way to reach lots of people fast and free advertising ain’t so bad. Builds good karma, you know?

I just got an email asking for questions too for oprah

    ANy other details?

  179. No other details except they wanted them today to get considered for the audience

  180. apparently your complaint was legitimate, Cassidy had to edit it before LOGO would air it

Well, I guess it depends on what you objected too. If I understand Cassidy’s explanation correctly, the 1 second crotch grab was cut, but the suggestive dropping to the knees and the sexay dancing remains in all its glory.

  181. Here’s the thing that makes all the ‘well, my Idol only got xx ‘“ have you seen/heard/tasted/touched that piece of dreck!!’ totally irrelevant in Adam’s case ‘“ he’s being treated like an exciting new recording artist with a built-in fan base and enormous money-making potential, NOT like a reality show winner who gets an obligatory album as a prize just for showing up and playing the game.

Yep. I’ve watched the show, followed the blogs, etc. just as long as anyone else here. I know it’s fun to be all smug and snicker at the OTT expectations of fans of an Idol other than your own. So, God forbid I should criticize anyone for doing that. On the other hand, anyone who hasn’t caught on that Sony/RCA has big plans for Adam Lambert is being deliberately obtuse. Which is fine. Enjoy.

    Gross.

  183. I want to hear about how RCA is treating Adam from someone who has been following blogs and watching the show for the while, isn’t an Adam fan but doesn’t hate him either.like mj or Kirsten(?) or anybody else…

and whether how RCA is treating Adam determines whether he gets dreck or not…

  184. oma DO NOT h8 on plaid!adam. have u seen the pics of him in blue plaid?(of course u have)

    wow

I so agree with this! It says something about what a genuinely nice man he is (and a decent human being) that he manages to take the time when all the attention is on him and he is about to achieve one of his biggest dreams to tweet support for others (who don’t always return the favour)….

I find some of the ‘me, me,me’ on twitter a bit boring and indulgent…

Well, they certainly getting him some very good names to work with. And 19M is working their a$$es off for him (best promo I’ve seen in a long time and Cook’s was pretty awesome). He seems happy.

I think we’ll know when the first singles and artwork actually come out though. The proof is in the pudding. Also, how long will RCA keep the album on sale. If it stays $9.99 for several weeks/months, you know they are really behind it. Do they have primo spots in the store and lots of swag splashed around? Do they advertise? Do they put up prominent ads on iTunes? Do they advertise on AllAccess.

BTW 19M is responsible for the tour, so I don’t think we can judge RCA based on it (they may provide some tour support though).

Luv, I’m assuming you’re smart enough to think for yourself and don’t need Kirsten or MJ to help you with this one. What do YOU think of the fact that Adam’s 2012 video is being premiered at a sold-out, world-wide event (“This Is It”)? Or that Adam will be performing his debut single on the AMA’s? Or that he will be appearing on Oprah? And, if you google, can you find any other former Idol who had such a trifecta of publicity? I’ll save you the google. No former Idol has gotten the kind of publicity that Adam has received. If you don’t believe me, and need to hear it from a “non-Adam fan who is not a hater,” that’s fine. But, I thought I’d save you the wait.

  198. Arista is a sub-label of RCA. [cue the music from Jaws]

Still irrelevant in terms of album covers. Why invest in an album cover of someone you’re just hoping to break even with?

  200. Kirsten

Blake’s first album was with Arista, not RCA. Totally different team of people involved in that mess.

Arista is a sub-label of RCA. [cue the music from Jaws]

Arista is part of the RCA Music Group not RCA Records — which includes three separate labels: RCA Records, Arista Records, and J Records,. RCA Music Group distributes the artists on those three labels.

Adam is signed as an RCA label artist; Blake was signed as an Arista label artist — different A&R, Marketing, Promo and PR. Only distribution is shared.

In the Sony Music Entertainment world — RCA Records means $$$ and Arista means $.

  201. that’s what I was looking 4 zsus and Kirsten :D different opinions .I know mine but I don’t know how this compares to idols in previous seasons which I why I asked.but if this IS unprecedented then that’s gr8.better 4 his album.40 DAYS FYI

  202. And, if you google, can you find any other former Idol who had such a trifecta of publicity?

The closest is Clay apparently. He had an Oprah appearance, an AMAs performance, and Rolling Stone cover. Didn’t he get some big name producer or songwriters too? No movie soundtrack promo stuff though.

  203. Why invest in an album cover of someone you’re just hoping to break even with?

I wouldn’t presume to know what the record label had in mind with Blake’s album. They didn’t exactly skimp on him either. He was no KLC. He did get to work with Ryan Tedder and some other notables.

BTW I heard One Republic on the radio today. They are in town opening for Rob Thomas. They have this thing on the local radio station where if you do an in-house interview, you have to sing an acoustic version of something outside of your style. They chose to do “Crazy” by Gnarles Barkley. Tedder was a little sharp in places, but whoever was on guitar was pretty hot. I didn’t hear the entire interview, so I don’t know if he mentioned working with Adam.

Link (LOL Tedder had to look up the words).

A record label only sets the retailer cost and the MSRP. The retailers set the sale price — on CD’s usually based on the number of units that they expect to sell. Top 10 one CD album on Amazon are all at $9.99 except The Beatles. It doesn’t matter to Sony/RCA just effect the retailers’ gross margin. And the retail cost drops (in almost all cases) as the retailer’s purchase volume increases — so when a presale on Amazon is set at $9.99 they expect it to be a hit record.

One of Amazon’s top sellers, “Embryonic” The Flaming Lips (so hot) is only $7.99. (WEA/Reprise)

Finally, from a financial standpoint, the label make a ton of incremental profit on unit sale #2 million — like about 80% profit. Most of the expenses are flat expenses, the variable costs are packaging, CD manufacturing, distro/shipping and minor admin expenses. A truly profitable label has only a few releases that sell a ton.

  205. what was clay signed to?

    RCA

No movie soundtrack promo stuff though.

I have a copy of Disney’s Alladin that has Clay singing some song on it. I think it was just for the DVD, though.

Arista is part of the RCA Music Group not RCA Records ‘” which includes three separate labels: RCA Records, Arista Records, and J Records,. RCA Music Group distributes the artists on those three labels.

But back in the day, Clive cast a long shadow over all those divisions. They all thank him and I seem to recall that Clive’s ouster was one of the reasons his album got lost in the shuffle.

  206. nvrmind clay was signed with RCA.I was looking at his wiki and the similaratoes between him and adam ,especially for fans are gross…

What massive hit did they have when Clay released his first album??

  214. Er. Topic. Michelin Man’ ¦Michelin makes good maps.

BEST LINE OF THE DAY (not counting the ones on Gleeee!). Man, I leave a Adam thread with 100 posts, come back a few hours, 265. When Adam’s record comes out, mj’s site is going DOWN (sort of like it did during the Seacrest/AMAs announcement but MUCH BIGGER, me thinks.

  215. What massive hit did they have when Clay released his first album??

Not Clay. Blake. Tedder produced Blake’s album.

They had that song from Timbaland’s album. Heh.

  216. Back then OneRepublic had a massive hit

“Apologize?” That wasn’t a hit until after Blake’s CD was done. And that was after it was put on Timbaland’s album. I’m not sure how it faired in Canada, but Apologize was nothing in the US until Timbaland released it.

Of course, none of this matters. As I said, anyone who is paying attention can see that Adam is getting A-list treatment from the label.

  217. O/T, but since it’s an Adam thread, if you go to the GLEE! Thread, there is an interview w/ Corey Monteith (he plays Finn, one of the two male leads) on Chelsea Lately. He describes being at an Obama Human Rights dinner (or event) and he and the Glee cast members hung out w/ her in her dressing room. He said she didn’t have on her “headdress” (lol)–just regular hair and a pretty black dress (and you’ll have to watch the clip to get the kind of dirty parts). And I was thinking that you could potentially substitute GaGa with ADAM next year (or maybe they would both be there). And then I flailed a bit.

Gotta go. Will be on tomorrow (less R/L). Carry on.

  218. I wouldn’t presume to know what the record label had in mind with Blake’s album. They didn’t exactly skimp on him either. He was no KLC. He did get to work with Ryan Tedder and some other notables

That album cover you linked to was a head shot with photoshop level art. If that’s not skimping I don’t know what is.

I have a copy of Disney’s Alladin that has Clay singing some song on it. I think it was just for the DVD, though.

Well that’s entirely different. Kelly and Carrie got soundtracks too. None of them got promo’d globally preceding the most anticipated movie about the most beloved recently deceased music Icon ever. There was an article yesterday talking about how unprecedented This Is It sales are globally. In Kuwait, we can’t even book in advance, it’s first come first serve.

It’s not about who got a soundtrack or who collaborated with whom. It’s about the collective effort being put into Adam. Sure he shares similarities with all the popular Idols of their day, but none of them have had everything he is getting. And he is getting everything they ever got only better and bigger.

I’ve been around music for a very long time, and I have never seen this amount of anticipation for a debut artist, Idol or otherwise.

  219. thanks PJ, that was awesome. she is the queen of Planet Fierce. i love her. i would love a duet with her and adam doing ACIGC next year (or really any song).

Re: reinharv ‘“ Lambert may have the high range (screechy female for some) of the castrati ‘“ but it’s pretty evident it came to him naturally.

    Yup, couldn’t be more self-evident.

  226. ahahahahaha tiger. i remember my mom reading that line in the RS article and nearly falling over. one of my favorite quotes.

i think the only thing that winning guarantees you is a record deal. beyond the competition they are subject to regular economic rules. supply will meet demand.

  227. Yikes! I’ve been going crazy. I couldn’t log into comments for a long time.

I just want to say that I LOVE Adam’s response to the Michelin Man question/comment.

He is so good in front of the camera.

  228. You can say all you want about him getting his share of promotion, but when all is said and done, he really hasn’t gotten the promotion he should have as winner.

Kris has gotten the winner’s promotion that every idol winner has gotten. What promotion has Adam gotten that Kris has not?

  229. And that’s a shame because winning should have guaranteed getting the best promotion etc. I feel sorry for Kris

Poor Kris! Maybe Susan Boyle can cry him a river.

  230. And that’s a shame because winning should have guaranteed getting the best promotion etc. I feel sorry for Kris (and he is getting the shaft IMO). You can say all you want about him getting his share of promotion, but when all is said and done, he really hasn’t gotten the promotion he should have as winner. I hope for his fans sake that Adam delivers. I’m not that into the OTT shows i.e. Brittany, Lady Gaga, etc. and apparently that is the way Adam wants to go. To each his own but ‘glamrock’ died once before. It will probably die again as these things tend to go in cycles. I want all the idols, past and present to do well, but winning should mean something and in Kris case it doesn’t. Sad.

I don’t think Adam is under the AI umbrella after the concert tour. It is Sony (I think) that is promoting him. Lot’s of musical styles go in cycles. Glam, grunge, rock, what have you.

I think Kris is doing very well. His single is getting a lot of air play. That’s a good thing.

  231. Poor Kris! Maybe Susan Boyle can cry him a river.

    Oh snap!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to Zsus and all for making this a Hilarious read. Fucking A, who knew Michelin man would bring it!

  232. Dont worry about kris or adam. Adam can sing anything, and he is a restless soul that will keep moving. I could never guess how whis next cd would be, but I am sure it will not be similar to this first one. And he is not singing glamrock directly from the past, he always asks people to not put him in a box. He is very current, a club kid that knows what is happening.

kris is having the standard winner promotion, the same jordin had. This is the way Jive works, he had concerts, radio interviews, big debut, etc. A debut in itunes on a Friday and a single without a pic are not significant mistakes to interfere definitely in the path of the single. Jive is doing its job.

The exposure Adam is having is not only because RCA decided to give him a certain profile, but because the media/industry is interested in him. Sorry, but 19 does not choose to have an idol at the AMA, the AMA choose who they want. Same with Oprah. And same with 2012. Adam is flashy and is being marketed and perceived accordingly.

Cant wait to see the album cover. Michelin man or not, I trust him and RCA to choose wisely.

  233. It does mean something. It means he gets a major label record deal.

And so did Adam and Allison. Kind of makes winning a moot point.

Yes, but Adam and Allison weren’t guaranteed a deal. If Kris had gotten, say, fourth, like Allison, he might never have been picked up by Jive. So winning does mean something.

  234. Poor Kris! Maybe Susan Boyle can cry him a river.

And then soak up the moisture with what remains of the Kris DustDevil.

  235. 2012 promotion, AMA, Oprah, RS, EW, shall I go on.

Those were all extras, all outside the AI scope for the winner. Those Adam earned by interest from those groups or lobbied for himself

The basic rollouts for a winner Kris has got, and will get a bit more when the album comes out, the usual stuff. Any extras from henceforth in the mainstream media will be based on his appeal etc to these outlets, as the artiste, not the winner of AI.We’ll soon be in Season 9, winner can only take you so far

  236. I think Kris will get to be in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Adam as second place probably won’t. But they should invite Adam because he is smokin hot!

  237. Sorry, but 19 does not choose to have an idol at the AMA, the AMA choose who they want. Same with Oprah. And same with 2012. Adam is flashy and is being marketed and perceived accordingly.

Sorry I don’t buy it. There are always “the scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” deals going on. I don’t for a minute think that 19 doesn’t have some pull with others in the industry. I’ve worked in corporate America long enough to know this is the way it works in all industries, not just in entertainment.

As I said that is my opinion and I feel sorry for Kris.

  238. Lot’s of musical styles go in cycles. Glam, grunge, rock, what have you.

Yup. And glam influence has been on the underground for a bit, but has had its influences make way to the mainstream slowly over the year. Never mind that so many pop acts seem to cite Queen as an influence (Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, Ke$ha). It’s kind of like how the start of the decade so many indie rock acts did the post-punk Joy Division/Gang of Four thing. Revival scenes happen fairly often with acts that are part of those movements bringing something fresh to them. Longevity is just bending with the trends and being one step ahead of them while being able to pull it off, but its way too early to even go there since the glam-electro-pop thing is just starting in the mainstream. It may be a flash in the pan, it may not. It looks like industry rumblings seem to lean not for now. Who knows?

Kris has gotten the winner’s promotion that every idol winner has gotten. What promotion has Adam gotten that Kris has not?

2012 promotion, AMA, Oprah, RS, EW, shall I go on.

Those have nothing to do with an American Idol winner’s title. 2012: Roland Emmerich was personally interested in Adam for the song, TfM. It is a very challenging song to sing, and there is no way Kris could have handled it. Oprah: Again, not a standard AI promotion. AMA: Adam has the buzz in the industry. Kris is relatively unknown. Again, Adam was approached by the AMA because of the buzz, his great speaking abilities, and charisma. The two magazine covers: Again, Adam had the buzz around the country, and RS loves Adam. Had nothing to do with winner’s promotion.

  240. 2012 promotion, AMA, Oprah, RS, EW, shall I go on.

Adam was asked to do the soundtrack. AMA asked Adam. Oprah wanted Adam, not Kris. Rolling Stone wanted Adam. EW wanted Adam. If any of these people wanted Kris, they would have asked for him. Adam didn’t take this away from Kris, because Kris wasn’t in the running for any of this. Kris has two concerts coming up with the Fray and Script. Nobody has asked Adam to do a concert. Kris has done talkshows Adam haven’t done. If anyone has complaints about how Kris is being promoted, go and complain to JIVE Records. Please don’t complain to Adam’s fans about how Kris is being treated. We are not responsible, neither is Adam.

  241. I changed computers (went downstairs) so the computer lethargy must have been on my end. This computer is working just fine.

Anyway, I think this thread is about Adam and his silly Michelin man costume.

As I said that is my opinion and I feel sorry for Kris.

  242. Clay’s ‘Proud of Your Boy’ was only on the Special Edition 2-Disc DVD with the deleted scene songs and some deleted dialog. It was cut from the film when the changed the storyline.

Well Aladdin was originally released in 1992, so “Proud of Your Boy” was recorded only for this “special edition” DVD re-release of the movie. There’s really no comparison to be drawn w/TFM.

  243. Sorry I don’t buy it. There are always ‘the scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’ deals going on. I don’t for a minute think that 19 doesn’t have some pull with others in the industry. I’ve worked in corporate America long enough to know this is the way it works in all industries, not just in entertainment.

And in the entertainment business that is illegal. Just ask 19 about that one as they have already been there and done that with Clay and Ruben and lost.

  244. If anyone has complaints about how Kris is being promoted, go and complain to JIVE Records. Please don’t complain to Adam’s fans about how Kris is being treated. We are not responsible, neither is Adam.

This is an AI blog, not an Adam Lambert blog. Presumably not everyone here is an Adam fan.

Anyway, I think this discussion was about the Michelin Man costume.

My feeling about that is that, out of context, it probably looks ridiculous, but all we have seen is a “making of” photo. Obviously Adam thinks it will look good within the framework of the album art and the theme of the album, and there’s no reason to doubt that he knows what he’s talking about.

  245. Please don’t complain to Adam’s fans about how Kris is being treated. We are not responsible, neither is Adam.

I would just add that Adam is super supportive of Kris. One of the reasons I love Adam. (I also like Kris. I love his new single.)

  246. They just played Adam’s “Mad World” on the radio here in Israel (In the country’s most popular radio station- galgalatz)!
    SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  247. I would just add that Adam is super supportive of Kris. One of the reasons I love Adam. (I also like Kris. I love his new single.)

And vice-versa. I didn’t get the earlier comment about Adam being supportive and some people not returning the favor. (It seemed to refer to Kris and Allison). Hey, if you can possibly get more supportive than saying, after you just won American Idol, that the other guy deserves it, please let me know.

For weeks Kris praised Adam in every interview he gave. He still does.
And Adam is the same way. Both great guys.

  248. Will, I’m tired but yes, it was the special edition re-release but cut when they changed the plot. Put on the SD 2-disc CD.

  249. I wasn’t saying you were mistaken about the song being cut Q3, just that some peeps were drawing a parallel between Adam’s and Clay’s soundtrack songs, and there really is no parallel IMO.

  250. Why was Adam at that Star magazine party? Where apparently the other biggest celebrities in attendance were Ice-T and Joe “Girls Gone Wild” Francis? The magazine is trash and this party sounds awful.

Absolutely right. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise.

As I said that is my opinion and I feel sorry for Kris.

Adam is getting promotion because Adam is brilliiant, and EVERYONE wants a piece of him. Yeah, Kris won a reality show, but that doesn’t mean he has “it”. I honestly think he just won because of the judges over hyping Adam and annoying AI viewers who decided to vote then for the underdog. But in reality, Adam’s the star. Kris is nice and cute.

Sorry if I got OT but I was responding to Sunn’s post at 11:17

I didn’t mention Kris in my post, I was talking past Idols not current ones and for good reason, I don’t know what promos they might still have in mind for the current idols. Which is why I didn’t respond to yours.

  254. Who’d you put your money on to be the breakout guy?

    I pick the Michelin Man!

(Apparently so did just about everybody else.)

  255. Adam probably will never be able to guest in Jay Leno’s show when it is at 11pm ;D but Kris did.

Kris guested at Elle while Adam could only phone in D:

Kris was booked for Conan’s show but unfortunately he was sick, and Allison (not Adam since he is NOT handled by Jiva) got the spot.

Kris has a single (or two), two single covers and a album cover (all beautiful pics), Adam just has Michelin Man

  256. 2012 promotion, AMA, Oprah, RS, EW, as well as the unrelented pimping on AI, shall I go on.

um. those were all extras. ie) 2012 = the movie director wanted Adam to sing the song- nothing to do with idol or 19
    AMA= same thing
    RS=same thing
    etc

The industry is loving Adam right now. Hes getting tons of buzz. It doesnt take alot to put 2 to 2 together. Someone the industry sees major potential in + the guy is a buzz generating machine. They see a potential star, everyone just wants a piece of him.
Not to mention, about Kris not getting his winners share? The winner gets a contract. Kris might not even have gotten signed if he didnt win. And he has also been promoted in similar ways to other idols- such as Jordin (who i routed for back then- and shes doing fairly well- so just relax and lets not play the blame and complain game KK??)

  257. will: I wasn’t saying you were mistaken about the song being cut Q3, just that some peeps were drawing a parallel between Adam’s and Clay’s soundtrack songs, and there really is no parallel IMO.

Oh I understood, I just wasn’t very clear in what I wrote. ITA it isn’t close to the same.

  258. Lol btw im really interested to see how this picture turns out :P

hahahaha spacey. maybe he’ll do like an astronaut/ space alien thing. cant wait ^^

  259. Why was Adam at that Star magazine party? Where apparently the other biggest celebrities in attendance were Ice-T and Joe ‘Girls Gone Wild’ Francis? The magazine is trash and this party sounds awful.

Puck (glee) was there too, so watch out ;)

Yes, he tweeted about his single twice!

I think Kris has had a lot of opportunities that were just his, as befits the winner (also Disney World, the Walmart appearance ), so I’m not sure where he has not gotten his due, however, you can’t force the public to buy or pay attention if they don’t want to.

  262. Not to mention, about Kris not getting his winners share? The winner gets a contract. Kris might not even have gotten signed if he didnt win.

True, given how long it took them to pick up Danny and the fact that Matt hasn’t been picked up, there is a real possibility that he might not have gotten a contract, or a much smaller one. Why not celebrate all the positive that has happened for Kris ? (and continues to happen ?)

  263. Absolutely right. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise.

You didn’t, iluvai. I loved what you wrote. I was referring to an earlier post, Maria22‘s I believe.

  264. ‘Apologize?’ That wasn’t a hit until after Blake’s CD was done. And that was after it was put on Timbaland’s album. I’m not sure how it faired in Canada, but Apologize was nothing in the US until Timbaland released it.

You have a pretty strict definition of hit, in my book. Timbaland put “Apologize” on his album in April of that year. Long before that season of Idol was even over. By the later part of October 2007, “Apologize” had already moved a million units and was flirting with the number one spot on both the download and Hot 100 charts. Sounds like a hit to me.

I remember people being really excited about Blake working with Tedder. I mean, for heaven’s sake, they put him in charge of writing and producing Leona Lewis’s debut song (released in October of 2007) and if ever there was a Clive/Cowell pet project, that was it. Tedder was hardly lunch meat in the fall of 2007.

Topic: Who here has eaten at a 3*Michelin restaurant? Worthy of the hype? I bet they don’t serve lunch meat.

Thanks Ross, I wasn’t sure what you were referring to. You are absolutely right that it’s very mutual, and 50/50 between Adam and Kris, I was strictly referring to twitter, in that Sarver was the only one who made any sort of comment on Adam’s TFM brouhaha…

  266. Was going to watch the promo again before trying to pass out, but, since it’s imprinted on my eyelids, probably don’t have to.

    ‘night, Michelin Man.

  267. We need a chibi drawing of Michelin Man…and don’t forget the Big Boy hair.

  268. New Adam`s photos (EW)
    Hoooottt!!!
    Exclusive photos from the studio
    Awesome photos !!!

Wow those were some hot photos. I love when he looks like he just rolled out of bed.

    Speaking of bed…

  269. http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20311923,00.html

The singer crafted a mission statement for his album, due out next month. ”I told the producers, ‘Look, I wanna do music that’s very rooted in classic rock as far as the melodies, the guitars, and the vocal energy,’ ” Lambert says. ”But then I really wanna overlay a lot of dance-y, synth-y, futuristic stuff on top of it.”

The CD is slated to include contributions from such pro tunesmiths as Linda Perry and Max Martin. ”There’s also a handful of songs I helped write that are really close to me,” he says. ”They’re not quite as obviously commercial; they’re a little bit more esoteric.”

I am sure I will love the “esoteric” ones ;-)

  270. i love that he had a “mission statement” and that he uses words like “esoteric” to describe the album. driven and smart!

and those pictures are GORGEOUS. he looks so comfortable rocking out in that studio.

  271. My feeling about that is that, out of context, it probably looks ridiculous,

there’s no probably about it, it looked ridiculous and even Adam knew that and ~thanked the make-up person for leaking that Tweetpic. But Adam and I disagree at this point that there is any context where that outfit and that hair will ever make sense. Unless massive amounts of photoshop are involved. hmmm. But I’d love to be proven wrong.

  272. You have a pretty strict definition of hit, in my book. Timbaland put ‘Apologize’ on his album in April of that year. Long before that season of Idol was even over. Tedder was hardly lunch meat in the fall of 2007.

Well, I followed Blake closely that year, and I remember in July, when a video popped up on YouTube of Blake in the studio with Ryan Tedder, no one knew who the hell he was and all of his fans were panicking and wondering if Blake was signed to some indie label. Trust me, I helped run Team Plaid…I know. ;) Blake started recording with Tedder in June of that year, well before “Apologize” and “Bleeding Love” became huge hits. I would say that Ryan’s status as a songwriter and producer has risen since June of ’07. (Okay, maybe he a took a little knock from the “Halo”/”Already Gone” thing. :P )

  273. I feel sorry for Adam at this point. His fans, like the Claymates before his, have already pointed his career at a downfall, a spiral which he will never recover from.

He will never be taken seriously, ever. It’s over before it began. :(

  274. Ever so slightly late to the party on this one but I had two thoughts on this latest MM saga. (Apologies in advance if this gets a bit long-winded.)

Firstly, I am beginning to wonder if it is not some fantastically clever, if not somewhat tongue-in-cheek, marketing ploy to encourage even more people to buy the album. I wonder if the RCA people saw all the hype surrounding the leaked picture and thought that by saying it would be in the album art, the haters might just buy it to see if it would vindicate them and give them a chance to ridicule the man (bah, humbug, not loving the haters! :-p). Well, maybe not but you never know. Of course the fans would be buying it anyway but will now be intrigued to see just how the picture would work in context!

My second thought is actually what I thought when it first leaked. I remember reading the name of the desiger of the clothes that were used during the shoot…possibly Saint although I am not sure if others were involved too…and googling some of their work – as you do! I can’t see the same pics up now but a whole bunch of them were of this futurisitc and space-age vibe. OK, now hear me out people, but some of the outfits were kind of like inflatable (*ducks*! No? You’re just about stifling the giggles?! OK I’ll carry on). Well, they had parts of them, shoulder pads etc., that appeared inflated and it all seemed to work, in a way. I did wonder at the time if the outfit he was in wasn’t ‘finished’. Perhaps it needed puffing up, and hinching in, and hopefully zipping up at the back so as to show of his snake hips! :-) OK, did I go too far!?

Anyway, I am reserving judgment until I see the finished product. Will I like it? Possibly not. But I’ll still love Adam, and he always seems to find a way to push my boundaries of thinking and make me re-evaluate my points of reference. Adam is my teacher right now!

I do not even know what you are talking about. Which fans? Where? Some naysayers here on this blog? Some people who like comparing Adam to Clay? You are certainly entitled to you opinion, but I completely disagree.

  279. Well, I followed Blake closely that year, and I remember in July, when a video popped up on YouTube of Blake in the studio with Ryan Tedder, no one knew who the hell he was and all of his fans were panicking and wondering if Blake was signed to some indie label. I would say that Ryan’s status as a songwriter and producer has risen since June of ’07.

Tedder was a Timbaland protege. Just because Idol fans didn’t know who he was didn’t mean Arista was stiffing him with crappy producers. Anybody following the Leona Lewis story at the time knew she was getting nothing but the best for her debut, so if she was working with Tedder, the music industry felt that he was the best.

I didn’t follow TeamPlaid, so I went to the archive. IMO, in the July article I found it was more angsting about whether Blake was being signed at all (announcements were not made until August that year) and Tedder’s involvement was taken as an indication that Blake wasn’t going Indie. By September, it was major SQUEE that he was involved.

Granted, Tedder is even bigger now as a producer. If Adam’s CD flops (unlikely), I suspect Tedder will be considered a “has been” back in October of 2009.

  280. Starryeyed-Adam’s fans will probably love anything he does. However, the goal is to expand album sales beyond his base of fans. He needs to balance cutting-edge and taste. He likes to say that he has no filter, but he uses one when necessary. He likes to push the envelope, but his performances are always appropriate to the venue. This does not mean he isn’t being true to himself as an artist. Just because he is brilliant, doesn’t mean he can’t have a stupid idea on occasion. And I still want to stick a pitchfork in the spacesuit!

  281. I wonder if the RCA people saw all the hype surrounding the leaked picture and thought that by saying it would be in the album art, the haters might just buy it to see if it would vindicate them and give them a chance to ridicule the man

The scans of the entire booklet will be available the weekend before the CD drops. Some store will put it out early and somebody won’t be able resist buying it.

I did not laugh at the MM pic, but this post have me ROFLMAO! Sorry Mysterioso, but I cannot take this seriously.

  286. I think Clay’s problem was shitty music. The quality of Adam’s music will make or break him, too.

It will, but Clay has the added problem of not really ever singing in a hot-selling genre. He just isn’t contemporary pop or any other genre that sells well today.

I think his only shot at sustaining a top-selling career would have been to somehow tap into a sort of Josh-Goban-style bringing-the-pretty lush easy-listening classic thingie. And in a way that’s a bit out of Clay’s realm too because his singing tends to be more big, bombastic, and theatrical. … Honestly, I’ve never been sure *what* category Clay’s style falls into — maybe some of the more staid pop-singing stars of the 50s and 60s, when men could stand up there on the stage and just blast the pop song out with a good voice or something. Anyway, I think that having a style that doesn’t really fit a salable category is a big problem.

Adam, on the other hand, has been so tuned into current pop culture in his real life that I think he’s much more likely to be able and willing to turn his voice to stuff that sells today.

  287. I feel sorry for Adam at this point. His fans, like the Claymates before his, have already pointed his career at a downfall, a spiral which he will never recover from.

Click on his/her name. I think you are correct.

Hi Mysterioso! I think you’re funny. Welcome aboard.

He’s a VFTW scum. He’s in bed with greenmelinda. Don’t feed the trolls!

I feel sorry for Adam at this point. His fans, like the Claymates before his, have already pointed his career at a downfall, a spiral which he will never recover from.

He will never be taken seriously, ever. It’s over before it began.

I did not laugh at the MM pic, but this post have me ROFLMAO! Sorry Mysterioso, but I cannot take this seriously.

I have no problem with peeps saying negative things about Adam and Adam’s career as long it isn’t homophobic. I don’t agree with Mysterioso, I think Adam’s career will be fine, but isnt’ it great we can all agree to disagree. :)

Adam’s career is over before it began?

Have you contacted RCA or SONY to tell them?

  291. Mysterioso stole the “over before it began” line from Gene Simmons. At least come up with some fresh material Mysterioso!

    Maybe he IS Gene?

  293. …a spiral which he will never recover from.

Obviously, you don’t know a thing. One should NEVER end a sentence with a preposition.

  294. The strangeness IS the fascination. Think Lady Gaga. Some people will never get her, but she has a loyal fanbase that loves the crazy.

One thing that sets Adam apart from some other idols is that he has a real creative vision about the kind of music he wants to make. He knows who he is and knows his own talent. He has said that he loves to shock audiences by pushing the edge without pushing them over it; he is confident enough to really go for whatever idea he envisions without holding back.

He is willing to take risks because he fully believes that what he is doing is awesome and believes he can help his audiences feel that too. (I want to give them what they dont even know they want)

When some don’t get him (ROF,) he listens and takes it in and considers criticism (Simon rubbish comment) but doesn’t let their disapproval threaten his own sense of what he thinks is good. When he hits, it’s genius; even when it doesn’t, it gets people thinking and talking. All of that creates buzz.

And his voice is really, really good- out of this world good. Add his good looks and flashy style into the mix, and people keep on talking.

If that isn’t enough, his personality is so likeable and charming that he has the potential to sell it all on his terms- so yes, while he is “strange,” his personality and open nature make him accessible at the same time. It is quite a combination, and one that has the potential to really explode. I can’t wait to see the fireworks ahead.
